Dan George, beloved husband of Bessie and cherished father of Eleanor, Ted, Elaine and Deanna, died peacefully April 26, 2001. He lived a joyous life of 91 years.
Born December 17, 1909, in Rion, Greece, he immigrated to this country when he was 9 years old. The Tom George family first settled in Buffalo, then in 1919 came to Sheridan and began operating a shoe shine parlor and hat cleaning business, called The New Method Shoe Shop. Later, Dan took over the business at 1 South Main and it became Dan’s Ranchwear. He was in business there until 1975, when he semi-retired. He also owned Sav-Mor and Bessie’s Bargains. The mural Dan commissioned painted on the original false front of the landmark building depicts the store when it was originally built by J.H. Conrad in 1885. It still stands today as a reminder of Dan’s business and civic life. It was his gift to the city, and in the spirit of preserving his gift, The Dan and Bessie George Mural Fund has been established.
He fell in love with Bessie Lewis of Lafayette, Colorado, whom he met while attending the University of Denver. They were married October 6, 1935.
In 1944, Dan was drafted by the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific on Tinian Island. His wife Bessie and their dear friend Tommy Poulos kept the business going in Dan’s absence. After the war, the business was expanded to include army surplus, western wear, workwear, tack, as well as his “hobby” -- shoe repair. A working man, he loved the working people. He whistled walking to work each day.
Dan was very active in the Methodist Church for sixty years and was also a founder of the local Greek Orthodox Church. He helped establish Sheridan’s first ice hockey league and worked tirelessly to promote the sport. He was also active in Lion’s Club, Kiwanis, American Legion, Kalif Shrine, and was member of Masonic Big Horn Mountain Lodge #43. His love of Sheridan was evident in his full involvement in the 75th Diamond Jubilee of the founding of the city.
His passions were his family, his work and his true friend, Nature. A fine fisherman, he was at peace quietly fishing the streams of the Big Horn Mountains. His cabin he christened “Friend of Solitude”.
In addition to his wife and four children, Dan is survived by his sons-in-law Terrance Poland and Jean-Claude Bosio, grandsons Erik Freestone, Rodrigo George, Demetrios George and Andraya Stamenkovic, granddaughter Flavia Jung, one great grandchild, sister-in-law Calliope George, brother-in-law Jay Richards, and his sister Peggy Rulli, the remaining founding family member.
The family would like to thank Kathy S., the caretakers and friends Eriko and Judy who helped to make his last years quality ones. To Leslie, Judy, Garret, Chris, the staff at the hospital and Dr. Chris Brown: you are a credit to your profession. And finally, thank you to all the people who have traded and continue to do so at Dan’s store.
Dan cared so much for preserving the history of Sheridan. The place he loved and served so well. A memorial fund has been established to pay for restoration and preservation of the mural at 1 South Main Street which is in need of work. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to The Dan and Bessie George Mural Fund, in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
