Harold Vincent Dressen
December 14, 1912 - September 23, 2000

Harold Vincent Dressen, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at his home Saturday, September 23, 2000, from a pulmonary asbestosis.

Harold was born, the first son of Erich and Ethel (Dudey) Dressen, at his grandmother Dudey's home in Grand Island, Nebraska, December 14, 1912. His childhood years were spent in and around Grand Island. They moved to Custer County and into the Sand Hill area where he clearly remembered riding a horse five miles, rain or shine, to get to a one-room schoolhouse. They also lived in Anselmo; it was from here they moved in 1929 and settled in Payette, Idaho.

Harold was active in sports in Anselmo and at Payette High School. As a senior, he took first place trophies in high jump, pole vault, broad jump and javelin, and second place in high hurdles. He pole-vaulted 12 feet with a bamboo pole and scissor-jumped six feet. After graduation in 1932, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the Riggins area. This also brought him work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. These positions lead him to Salmon, Idaho, where he met his future wife.

Harold married Eleda Amanda Egan in Pocatello on January 14, 1939. They were sealed eternally in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on April 15, 1949. Harold was a devoted husband and father who worked hard to provide for his family. He left the Forest Service at Salmon in January 1941 and moved with his family to Los Angeles. At the Hemphill Diesel Engineering School, he learned the welding trade. He was hired to work for Consolidated Shipyard at Wilmington and was later transferred to the San Pedro shipyard. He taught welding and was a foreman all during the war. Harold was one of the first welders hired and the last laid off after the war. A few of the ships he helped build were the Hope, Comfort, and Mercy hospital ships, some that are still being used. At this time, he was also attending the Frank Wiffin Upholstery Training School.

In 1947, the family moved to Pocatello, where Harold opened Dressen's Custom Upholstery Shop. He also worked for Ralph Curtis Upholstery. He dearly loved working in this profession. About a year later, Roy Christensen at Idaho State College Vo-Tech asked him to teach the new upholstery program. He retired December 16, 1977, as Professor Emeritus after 29 years.

After his retirement, Eleda and Harold traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, the East coast, and Nebraska and California several times to visit family. Harold was converted and baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 5, 1946, and was a faithful member. He had been a counselor in three bishoprics in the Pocatello Fourth Ward. He also was a Sunday school superintendent for eight years, a high counselor for the Pocatello East Stake for eleven years, and scout master for six years. In scouting, he went on to receive his Wood Badger award and Scouters award as amember of Scout Troop No.1 from Gilwell, England.

Harold is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleda Amanda Dressen; one son, Gene Harold (Lorraine) Dressen, Idaho Falls; and three daughters, Karen Mae (Donald) Bork, San Diego, Calif., Judy Marie (Edward) Delonas, and Marla Lee Witt, Idaho Falls; a sister-in-law, Twila Dressen, Fruitland, Idaho; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elden; and great-granddaughter, Lilly Bork.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2000, at the Pocatello Fourth Ward, 7th and Center streets, with Bishop Robert Bradley officiating. The family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. 4th Avenue, Pocatello, and one hour prior to the services at the church.
