Lelin E. Owings
Services for Lelin E. Owings, 78, of Sheridan, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sheridan Salvation Army Chapel with Capt. Jason Gill officiating. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Owings died March 22, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in Sheridan and attended schools here. In the eighth grade he went to work for the railroad in Sheridan and learned to weld. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and reportedly worked on the atomic bomb on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M. He was discharged in June 1947 and returned to Sheridan. He married
Patricia R. Doyle on Dec. 24, 1947, in Hardin, Mont. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad in Sheridan for 47 years, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeffrey and John Owings of Sheridan; three daughters, Aspen Dumas of Sheridan, Shelmer Pinyan of Englewood, Colo., and Shannon Chambers of Champion, Neb.; two brothers, John Carr of Price, Utah, and James Carr of Wahiwa, Hawaii; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Margaret Buckley
Cremation has taken place for Margaret Buckley, 86, of Sheridan. Mrs. Buckley died March 21, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born May 13, 1920, in Sheridan to William Hugh and Beulah F. Ausmus. After high school she went to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. in Sheridan. She married
Archie Wentz in 1941. They had two children. In 1949 she moved to Edgemont, S.D. In 1958 the couple divorced, and she went back to work for Mountain Bell in Casper. In 1964 she married
C.G. Buckley. They later moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where she worked for the telephone company and raised and showed Appaloosa horses. She retired from the phone company in 1975. In 1980 the couple divorced and she returned to Sheridan. She worked for Sheridan College for 10 years. Survivors include one brother, Bill Ausmus; one son, Roger Wentz of Sheridan; one daughter, Sheri Gravies of Sheridan; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
William Severance
Services for William Severance, 67, of Sheridan, will be later in April. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Severance died March 22, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. He was born May 25, 1939, in Wisconsin to Milton and Ethel (Niles) Severance. He moved to Sheridan, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Mr. Severance enlisted in the Army and then the Air Force, serving in Vietnam. After the service he returned to Sheridan, where he married
Anita Parrish on May 23, 1970. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until he retired in 2000. He played golf, read, watched movies, traveled and was a member of the United Transportation Union. Survivors include one son, Michael, of Sheridan; one daughter, Annette Long, of Buffalo; one brother, Robert Severance, of Arizona; one sister, Barbara Roadifer, of California; and two grandchildren.
Clarence R. Cates
A Christian wake service will take place 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home for Clarence R. Cates of Sheridan. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will follow in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Mr. Cates, 88, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, in Billings. He was born Dec. 13, 1918, on a small ranch 10 miles south of Arvada. He attended school through the third grade, then moved to Gillette. He graduated from high school in 1937 and went to work for his father, who had started the first truck line between Sheridan and Gillette. He later worked for Buckingham Transportation Co. before joining the U.S. Navy in April 1942. He served aboard the Destroyer Escort No. 136 Frederick C. Davis and was discharged in December 1945. He married
Helen J. Clark on Aug. 10, 1946. He and his brother started Lou's Transfer and Storage Co. He retired and sold the business in 2001. Mr. Cates was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Elks Lodge, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, six brothers and one sister. He is survived by two sons, Michael and Jaybe, and one grandson.
Shirley Holwell
Cremation has taken place for lifelong Sheridan resident Shirley Holwell. No services were announced. Mrs. Holwell, 68, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 12, 1938, to Cristoff and Amelia (Leis) Deutsch. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1957. She married
Clifford Holwell on May 17, 1957, and raised two sons. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and spent time with family and friends, in the mountains and in her garden. She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Curtis Holwell of Castle Rock, Colo., and David Holwell of Gillette; two brothers, Herb Deutsch of Livingston, Mont., and Chris Deutsch of Sheridan; a sister, Lillian Sadler of Sheridan; and six grandchildren. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Holwell's name in care of Kane Funeral Home.
Fred Miller
Funeral services for Fred Miller, 95, of Sheridan will be 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Sugarland Ridge Retirement and Assisted Living Center with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Miller died Friday, March 16, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. He was born March 31, 1911, in Park City, Mont., to Jacob and Katherine (Zier) Miller. He moved to Hysham, Mont., when he was 2, Ranchester in 1918, and Sheridan in 1923. Mr. Miller took over his parents' beet farm south of Sheridan and ranched in this area, retiring in 1980. In the 1930s he was a boxer, participating in the numerous smokers in the Sheridan area. He was a member of Lions Club and Immanuel Lutheran Church. He played cards, cribbage and traveled. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Clurus, and eight brothers and sisters. Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Medlock of Westminster, Colo.; one sister, Lydia Miller of Casper; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cody Ellis Sullens
Funeral services for former Dayton resident Cody Ellis Sullens, 17, of Buffalo will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Big Horn Baptist Church with the Rev. Gail Bell, the Rev. Ed Spurlock and the Right Rev. Vernon Strickland officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. until noon Monday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Sullens died Wednesday morning, March 14, 2007, in a one-car accident five miles north of Kaycee. He was born March 7, 1990, in Pontiac, Ill., to Richard and Teri Sullens. The family moved to Dayton when he was 4. He attended Tongue River Elementary School in Ranchester. He moved to the Purdy Ranch with his mother and attended Billy Creek Country School until the fourth grade. He attended Clear Creek Middle School in Buffalo from the fifth through the eighth grade. He was a sophomore in Buffalo High School. He participated in athletics, playing football, basketball and baseball, and enjoyed skiing. He started riding calves at a young age, and rode bulls in rodeos for the past year. He was an avid archery and rifle hunter and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Teri and Jim Purdy of Buffalo; one brother, Jeremy Gard of Buffalo; a sister, Jessica Sullens of Buffalo; and his maternal grandparents, the Rev. Daniel G. Balkenbush
Funeral services for Daniel G. Balkenbush, 53, of Story will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Story with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Kearney cemetery followed by a reception at Story Woman's Club. A vigil will be 7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Balkenbush died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at his residence of natural causes. He was born June 26, 1953, in Buffalo to Lois (Peters) and Jim Balkenbush. He grew up in Buffalo and Story and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1972. After high school he attended the University of Wyoming. He married
Michelle Sabell in Golden, Colo., on June 5, 1981. They lived in Story while Mr. Balkenbush worked as a foreman at Decker Coal until 1983. They moved to Gillette, where he worked at the Caballo Coal Mine. In 1997 they moved to Big Fork, Mont., where he went into business for himself refinishing log buildings. In 2002, Mr. Balkenbush returned to Story. Mr. Balkenbush coached youth wrestling, baseball, football, track and soccer. He was a volunteer for CHAPS in Sheridan. He was an outdoorsman and horseman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, training horses and packing in the mountains. Survivors include his parents; one son, John Michael of Frederick, Colo.; a daughter, Carly Jo of Key West, Fla.; four brothers, John, Pete and Bob, all of Sheridan, and Ken of Story; two sisters, Jalene Sorenson of Gillette and Judy Balkenbush of Sheridan. Icelene E. Simpson
Funeral services for Icelene E. Simpson, 93, of Story will be 10 a.m. Monday in Halley Olsen Murphy Memorial Chapel in Lancaster, Calif. Burial will be in Joshua Memorial Park in Lancaster. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Simpson was born Nov. 13, 1913, in Montezuma, Iowa, to Byron and Eva (Steele) Playle. She grew up and attended schools in Montezuma and Newton, Iowa. She worked for Spiegel's Catalog and, later, Merle Norman Cosmetics. She moved to California in 1969 and worked for the Los Angeles County sheriff's office until 1975, when she retired. She married
Dale Simpson in 1979. He died in 2003, and she moved to Sheridan to be near family. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and enjoyed shopping, holiday baking, and being with family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth, and a sister, Inez Vestal. Survivors include a sister, Iris Cahhal of Story. Lena M. Guster
Former Sheridan resident Lena M. Guster, 90, of College Station, Texas, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at her residence. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. May 26 with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. They will be followed by a reception for family and friends at the Holiday Inn. Arrangements are with Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan, Texas. Mrs. Guster was born in Dunlap, Iowa, to Janie (TenEyck) and Otto Smithers. She grew up in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1934. She received a cosmetology license from Samuels Beauty School in Omaha, Neb. She and her twin sister operated a beauty shop in Dunlap until 1940. She married
Norman J. Guster on June 9, 1940, in Dunlap. They moved to Sheridan in 1948, then to North Dakota before returning to Sheridan in 1955. Mrs. Guster was active in the Newcomers Club, Junior Women's Club, Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends at the Senior Citizens Center and helped her husband at Bob's Western Wear, which he owned and managed. She moved to Texas in 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Guster of College Station and Nancy Isaacs of Denver; her twin sister, Rowena Coleman of Napa, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the local hospice or Shrine Crippled Children Travel Fund through Karen Green at First Interstate Bank of Commerce.
Arlene N. Griffin
Arlene N. Griffin, 79, of Sheridan died Friday, March 9, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Griffin was born Aug. 14, 1927, in Denver to Leonard M. and Madeline (Wiley) Hebrew. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 3 years old. She grew up and attended schools here and graduated from Sheridan High School. She graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Montana-Missoula. She worked in Billings. She married
Robert Pooley in Thermopolis. They lived in Worland, Casper and Billings. Mr. Pooley died in 1957. Mrs. Griffin moved to Sheridan in 1959 and was a secretary for the YMCA and J.M. McDonald's Clothing store. She married
Richard Griffin in Sheridan in 1968. He died in 1970. Mrs. Griffin moved to California in 1971. She restored historic buildings in the San Francisco and Santa Rosa areas. She returned to Sheridan in 1998. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Professional Women's Association. She enjoyed historic restoration and spending time with her family. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter. Survivors include a son, Robert Pooley of Sheridan; a brother, Merrill Hebrew of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Jayne of Kona, Hawaii; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Juanita J. Haynes
Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Juanita J. Haynes, 90, will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Assembly of God Church in Miles City, Mont. Burial will be in the family lot in Custer County cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Mrs. Haynes died Saturday, March 10, 2007, in Miles City. Mrs. Haynes was born June 6, 1916, in Tulsa, Okla., to the Rev. William and Grace (Loyd) Boyles. She played the piano and organ for her church. She graduated from Custer County High School in 1936 and attended a business college in St. Paul, Minn. She married
Orville Gilmore Haynes in 1939. She was a member of Lighthouse Assembly of God in Miles City for 65 years, serving many years as church treasurer. She enjoyed entertaining in her home, baking and sewing. She was a member of the Trainman's Auxiliary. She supported her children and grandchildren in rodeo, football, track, volleyball, cheerleading and basketball and was a fan of the Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Gordon; and a granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, Gary and Bob, both of Miles City; a daughter, Debbi of Sheridan; a brother, William of Florida; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Olga Osborne
Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Olga Osborne, 84, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Gillette Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with Kelly Van Engen officiating. Burial will follow in Gillette's Mount Pisgah cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. before the service. Mrs. Osborne died Saturday, March 10, 2007, of natural causes. She was born Aug. 8, 1922, to Chris and Flora (Price) Olsen on their homestead southeast of Gillette. She attended Campbell County rural schools. The family moved to Timber Creek, where Mrs. Osborne worked on the family ranch until 1942. She then moved to Igloo, S.D., and later to Casper to take sheet metal training. She returned home for a short time before moving to California to paint ships. She returned to Gillette in 1944. She married
Ronald J. Osborne on March 13, 1946. They resided in and around the Gillette area until they bought a small farm east of Wyodak. After the death of her husband in 1968, she moved into Gillette, later to Milton-Freewater, Ore., then to Sheridan and Riverton before returning to Gillette in 1985. Mrs. Osborne enjoyed gardening, her dogs, cats and parrots, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include two daughters, Bertha Baumann and Bonnie Sharp of Gillette; one sister, Elsie Bates; two granddaughters; two grandsons; four great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and two nephews. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Edwin Vance `Ted' Newcomer
Funeral services for Sheridan native Edwin Vance Ted Newcomer, 93, of Benton City, Wash., will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center in Worland with Bishop Jack Stott officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens cemetery in Worland. Visitation will be from noon until service time in the Relief Society Room at the church. Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Worland. Mr. Newcomer died Friday, March 9, 2007, in Benton City. He was born Nov. 15, 1913, on Prairie Dog Creek outside Sheridan to Ed and Eva Newcomer. He attended Linden Elementary and the one-room schoolhouse at Red Butte before attending Sheridan High School. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with degrees in animal husbandry and agronomy and earned a teaching certificate as well. He married
Wilma Adele Donaldson in Sheridan on Aug. 15, 1938. He taught vocational agriculture classes in Burns, Lander and Buffalo. He was a post-World War II agriculture trainer for returning veterans in the Buffalo area. In 1953 he began managing the Northern Wyoming Federal Land Bank until his retirement in 1978. A job transfer led to Worland, where he lived for 34 years. Mrs. Newcomer died in 1998. Mr. Newcomer was a member of the Community Concert board, tree board, garden clubs, museum board, was a Boy Scout and Boy Scouts leader and adviser, and participated in church activities. He participated in theater and choirs. In Buffalo he was branch president for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served an 18-month couples mission in Hawaii for the church. He played sax and clarinet. In Buffalo, he played with Beulah and Her Boys, and in Worland he played with Knights of Note. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth and Esther, and two brothers, Earl and Fred. Survivors include two sons, Ted of Fort Collins, Colo., and Fred of Evanston; three daughters, Corlet of Benton City, Anna Beth of Hillsboro, Ore., and Christine of Phoenix; a brother, Ralph of Sheridan; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Mary Lou Hudson
BUFFALO - Funeral services for Mary Lou Hudson, 76, of Buffalo will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Mrs. Hudson died Friday, March 9, 2007, at the Johnson County Health Care Center. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services to follow.
