Geraldine B. Given

Graveside services for former Sheridan County resident Geraldine B. Given, 86, of Greeley, Colo., will be 11 a.m. Monday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Given died Monday, Oct. 30, 2006, in Centennial Health Care Center in Greeley. She was born Dec. 11, 1919, in Lamona, Iowa, to Willard and Amy (Downey) Beck. She attended elementary school in Acme and graduated from Sheridan High School. She received her teaching degree from the University of Wyoming. She married Willard Given on Dec. 29, 1943. He served during World War II, and Mrs. Given lived in Sheridan and taught school in Clearmont. After the war, the family lived in St. Louis for 40 years before moving to Cheyenne. Mrs. Given was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband; a son, James of Lakewood, Colo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jerrid Gardner

BUFFALO - Jerrid Gardner, 22, of Buffalo died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, in an oil field accident north of Glenrock. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Big Horn Baptist Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services following the funeral. Memorials may be made to Wyoming Game and Fish Outdoor Recreation Education Opportunities program in care of the funeral home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Barbara Jean Spence

Sheridan County native Barbara Jean Spence, 66, of Arvada, Colo., died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at her residence. Funeral liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Cheyenne with the Rev. Gary Ruzicka as celebrant. Burial will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. Mrs. Spence was born Sept. 6, 1940, in Monarch to John A. and Ethel M. Yorio. She was a 1958 graduate of Sheridan High School and attended Sheridan College. She married James A. Spence in June 1960. She went to work for Mountain Bell in Cheyenne in 1978 and at the time of her death was an executive administrative legal assistant with Qwest. She lived in Cheyenne for 20 years before moving to Arvada. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and St. Mary's Catholic Church and served on the board of the DePaul Hospital Guild. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ for weddings and other events. She was preceded in death by her husband Nov. 7, 1981. Survivors include a daughter, Jayme Rinn of Arvada; a son, Kevin Spence of Green River; a brother, Frank Yorio of Sheridan; and two grandchildren.

Kathleen `Kathy' Voogd

Memorial services for Kathleen Kathy Voogd, 62, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Revs. Terral Bearden and Kevin Jones officiating. Mrs. Voogd died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after 38 years of battling multiple sclerosis and cancer. Cremation has taken place. She was born Nov. 19, 1943, in Sheridan to Joe and Annie (Woodhead) Harrison. She married Homer Voogd on Aug. 20, 1961, in Sheridan. She worked at Hospital Pharmacy, for Bob Ernst and the Rent-It-Center, and Highland Park School. She enjoyed four-wheeling until she had to quit because of her health. She also enjoyed making afghans and tending flowers. She was preceded in death by an infant brother and a sister, Peggy Voogd. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Todd and Mike of Sheridan; a foster son, Danny Culp of Clearmont; two brothers, Tom Harrison of Gillette and Bill Harrison of Sheridan; a sister, Joan Gossett of Buffalo; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Fauntella (Dedman) Bumbaca

Fauntella (Dedman) Bumbaca, 91, of Clearmont died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial reception will be 1-4 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Elks Lodge in Sheridan. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Bumbaca was born May 2, 1915, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Dick and May Dedman. She moved to Forsyth, Mont., in 1918 and lived there until 1932 when she graduated from high school. She received a teacher's certificate from Billings Normal School and taught in several country schools in Montana. She married James Jimmy Bumbaca on Dec. 29, 1939, in Lewistown, Mont. She taught school in Montana for 40 years, including schools at Smith Creek, Pine Butte, Lodge Grass, Forsyth and Belfry. In the mid-1950s, while teaching at Lodge Grass, she was honored at an education meeting in Denver for developing a program for non-English speaking children entering first grade. She moved to Sheridan in the late 1970s after retiring. She worked at Wilson Veterinary Clinic and took in many geriatric dogs and cats unwanted by their previous owners. On many occasions, she kept turkeys, chickens, lambs, rabbits or calves in her spare bedroom. She moved back to Belfry in 1990, then moved to her son's ranch in Clearmont last spring. She enjoyed her schnauzer, Bridget, and Mustang cars. In 2000, she bought a blue Mustang, then bought a gray Mustang shortly before her 90th birthday. Survivors include one son, Richard of Clearmont; a daughter, Nancy Perey of Billings; a sister, Mary Ann Sherman of Forsyth; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to any animal protection organization or animal shelter.

Betty M. Ruff

A private family memorial service for Betty M. Ruff, 86, of Sheridan will be at a later date. Mrs. Ruff died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Ruff was born April 19, 1920, in Casper to Clifford M. and Marie MacCatherine. She graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Kenneth Ruff on Aug. 2, 1941, in Sheridan. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she played in the handbell choir for many years, and the Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed knitting, handwork, music and reading. She was preceded in death by four brothers, one sister and a grandson. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a daughter, Nancy R. Fowkes of Danville, Calif.; two sons, David of Sheridan and James B. of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church handbell choir in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Theodore `Ted' Kristy

Memorial services for Theodore Ted Kristy, 84, of Sheridan will be at a later date. Mr. Kristy died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Kristy was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Dietz to Peter and Regina Kristy. He worked for many years at Legerski's Meat Co. until he retired. He enjoyed playing the accordion, watching baseball and football games, spending time in the Big Horn Mountains and going to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center. He was a resident of the Downer Addition before moving to Sheridan Manor. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Reed, and three brothers, Joseph Pete, John and Stanley. Survivors include a sister, Theresa M. Rodgers of Martinez, Calif., and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to a recipient of the donor's choice in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Michael Shawn Ruiz

Michael Shawn Ruiz, 30, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident Tuesday between Buffalo and Gillette. Viewing will be 4-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home of Gillette. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Bill Morel, pastor of the Family Life Church, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah cemetery. Mr. Ruiz was born April 7, 1976, in Gillette to Manuel and Vickie Ruiz. He grew up and attended school in Gillette. He enjoyed fishing and watching the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed being with children, especially his own. He had recently moved to Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors include two children, Tallie and Keegan Mehlberg, both of Gillette; his father, of Sheridan; his mother, of Gillette; a brother, Shane Shipley of Gillette; a sister, Misti Ruiz of Sheridan; a stepsister, Sara Bieber of Sheridan; and a stepbrother, Jordan Bieber of Sheridan. David H. Carter

David H. Carter, 62, of Sheridan died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. No services are planned, but friends and acquaintances may visit Kane Funeral Home between 1 and 8 p.m. Friday to sign a guest book in memory of Mr. Carter. He was born Aug. 4, 1944, in Sheridan to Harland Slim and Kathryn Carter. He completed his high school education in Grand Junction, Colo., then enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam during the mid-1960s. He received a Purple Heart. He spent many years in Louisiana working on an offshore oil platform before moving back to Sheridan a few years ago. Survivors include his mother, Kathryn Carter Brown; two brothers, Richard and Ronald; and a sister, Christine.

Margaret Hillberry

Margaret Hillberry, 79, of Sheridan died Monday, Dec. 26, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Jan. 4 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Betty M. Ruff

Betty M. Ruff, 86, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service for the family will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church handbell choir.

Clark Wieland

Clark Wieland, 74, of Sheridan died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Jan. 5 with Chaplain Everett Wright officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the University of Nebraska Foundation, 8712 W. Dodge Road, No. 100, Omaha, Neb.

Sharon A. Summers

Funeral services for Sharon A. Summers, 65, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Elks cemetery. Mrs. Summers died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born April 21, 1941, in Detroit. She married Richard L. Dick Summers in 1961 in Las Cruces, N.M. She was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a son, Sam T. of Sheridan; a daughter, Suzanne Gillum of Gillette; a sister, Uldine Hendricks of Las Cruces; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Children's Center or the charity of the donor's choice in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Willie Ferne Cook

Graveside services for Willie Ferne Cook, 90, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday in the East Lawn cemetery in Denver under direction of Oligner-Hampden Mortuary of Denver. Mrs. Cook died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Cook was born Nov. 21, 1916, in Bronte, Coke County, Texas, to Drewery Fredrick and Josie Lee (Thompson) Pruitt. She grew up and attended schools in Rush Springs, Okla. She was a graduate of Rush Springs High School. She married Cecil L. Cook on Jan. 23, 1937, in Rush Springs. They lived in Houston until June 1952, when they moved to Casper. They moved to Denver in June 1965. Mrs. Cook moved to Sheridan in June 2000. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Denver and Casper. She enjoyed music, crafts and spending time with her family. She and her husband enjoyed traveling around the world. She was preceded in death by her husband and one son. Survivors include a daughter, L. Roxanne Mires of Sheridan; a brother, Garland Pruitt of Liberty, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Vice of Denver; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Kathryn Murdock

BUFFALO - Kathryn Murdock, 89, of Buffalo died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Jan. 3 in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Jan. 3 in the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Memorials may be made to the Wesleyan Church Building Fund in care of the Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Harold D. Mauck

Harold D. Mauck, 85, of Buffalo died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was father of Starr O'Dell of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Viewing will be 1-9 p.m. Wednesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Military graveside services in Willow Grove cemetery will follow the services. Mr. Mauck was born April 12, 1921, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Ira and Mildred Mauck. He married Marjorie E. Finley on July 7, 1942, in Buffalo. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe from 1942-45. He drove trucks for many years and owned and operated a motel and service station in Buffalo. He was a retired judge. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, reading and spending summers at his home in the mountains. He was preceded in death by a brother. Other survivors include his wife, of Buffalo; a son, Gary of Buffalo; another daughter, Dawn Leyden of Denver; four brothers, Eugene of Corydon, Ind., Darrell and Dennis, both of Buffalo, and Terry of Oregon; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Senior Center in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Judith Burgess Ward

Judith Burgess Ward, 67, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, after a battle with chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. At her request, no services are planned, but a gathering for friends and family will take place in June in northwestern Colorado. Those who wish to attend are asked to call her son, Doug, at (208) 762-7107 or e-mail dkplus2@verizon.net. Mrs. Ward was born Aug. 14, 1939, in Laramie to Gerry and Lucille Burgess. She was a graduate of Cody High School, where she was valedictorian, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in languages in 1961 from the University of Wyoming. After graduation, she moved to Denver, where she worked as a legal secretary. She married John Ward in 1963. She was a leading figure in the early conservation movement in Colorado in the 1970s, according to her family. She was a vice president of the Denver Audubon Society and a board member of the Colorado Open Space Council, a leader and newsletter editor for the Denver Field of Ornithologists, led field trips for the Denver Museum of Natural History (now the Denver Museum of Nature and Science), and organized and led Christmas and spring bird counts in Colorado and Wyoming. She contributed to state studies of bird distribution, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service breeding bird surveys, and the Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas. Survivors include her husband; her son of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; a daughter, Marcy of Colby, Kan.; a sister, Donna McMurry of Alcova; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Bighorns or the Nature Conservancy.

Craig O'Brien Sr.

Former Sheridan-area resident Craig C. O'Brien Sr., 83, Midwest, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at Cheyenne Regional Hospital. A celebration of his life will take place 3:30 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Born July 6, 1923, in Wall, S.D., he grew up in the Sisseton, S.D., area and served in the military from 1943 to 1947. He married Mary Marie Maynard on Nov. 11, 1957, in Redondo Beach, Calif., where he worked as a painter. She preceded him in death. Mr. O'Brien moved to this area and worked on several ranches. He married Dennise Willette. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching boxing, and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patsy Crouse and Susan O'Brien, both of Midwest; a son, Craig C. O'Brien Jr. of Sheridan; two stepsons, Chester C. Burton of Cody and Lawrence Willette of Deer Lodge, Mont.; 23 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. The funeral home is accepting contributions to defray expenses.
