Helen Mae Goodwin
Helen Mae Goodwin, 78, of Casper died Thursday, July 13, 2006, in Central Wyoming Hospice Home. She was mother of Tom Goodwin of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Newcomer Family Funeral Home in Casper with the Rev. Buddy Hanson of Mountain View Baptist Church officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Douglas Park cemetery in Douglas. Viewing will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Goodwin was born June 30, 1928, in Erlanger, Ky., to Edward Smith and Lydia Margaret Yelton. She grew up in Erlanger and worked in Cincinnati as a teenager. She and her mother moved to Tucson, Ariz., because of problems she suffered with her health. She met her husband, Arthur, in Arizona. She lived in several states and, in 1964, moved to Taiwan. She returned to Wyoming in 1967. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Adrian and Robert Smith. Other survivors include three other sons, Art of Casper, Donnie of Fredericksburg, Va., and Tony of Arlington, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. W.V. `Vern' McNair
Memorial services for W.V. Vern McNair, 89, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Deacon Joe Kristufek officiating. Mr. McNair died Friday, July 7, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center. At his request, cremation has taken place. He was born May 14, 1917, in Sheridan to Clyde and Ethel (Richards) McNair. He left Sheridan for a few years at the start of World War II and was a machinist at Martin Aircraft in Nebraska. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 and was involved in the Third Fleet Operation and in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. He married
Melba Gunter. They divorced. He married
Darlene Beedle Abbott on Jan. 16, 1982, in Buffalo. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid reader, especially of mysteries and Westerns. He was a self-employed paint contractor from 1949 until age 71, when he retired. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Velda Cohn, Violet Thobe and Vera Talcott, and a brother, Verl McNair. Survivors include his wife; a son, Lawrence of Daggett, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Kathy Kate Taylor of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Laureen Dozier of Walnut Springs, Texas; a sister, Betty Raymond of Sheridan; two brothers, Bill of Escondido, Calif., and Gene of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jeannette Laird Keaten
Graveside services for Jeannette Laird Keaten, 74, of Sheridan are planned for September in Waverly, Iowa. Mrs. Keaten died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. life in Denver and Scottsdale, Ariz. Mrs. Keaten was a graduate of Northwestern University. She worked for a short time as a social worker for the Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting, playing bridge, investing, collecting dolls and artwork, and researching her genealogy. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Laird, and a son, Jeffrey Genster. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Stephanie Eppich of Sheridan; a brother, Edward Laird of Santa Ana, Calif.; and a granddaughter. Joseph Richard Moore
Former Sheridan resident Joseph Richard Moore, 17, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, in a car accident between Buffalo and Kaycee. Funeral services were Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Church of the Nazarene in Los Osos, Calif. Mr. Moore was born Oct. 10, 1988, in Buffalo to Gary and Debra Moore Sr. The family moved to Sheridan when he was a child, and he attended Sheridan schools until third grade. The family moved to Wisconsin. His parents died in 2004, and he moved to California to live with relatives. He enjoyed hiking and spending time with friends. He was a member of Church of the Nazarene in San Luis Obispo. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents Mary McCord, Althea Moore and Ben Moore. Survivors include a sister, Jennifer O'Neill of Buffalo; a brother, Gary Jr. of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; and his grandfather Leroy Moore and legal guardian Serena Johnson, both of San Luis Obispo. Timothy Lewallen
Funeral services for Timothy Lewallen, 52, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cornerstone Church with the Rev. Tony Forman officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Thursday in the church. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Lewallen died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Denver due to complications from leukemia, a bone-marrow transplant and graft-versus-host disease. He was born Dec. 26, 1953, in Bangor, Maine, to Charles Lew and Bertha (Rossignol) Lewallen. He worked in Wyoming oil fields until the early 1980s, then moved to Washington state, where he farmed and worked as a mechanic. He obtained his journeyman electrician card and worked as an electrician until December 2005. He moved back to Wyoming in summer 2003 to be closer to his family. He worked for Ultimate Electric for several years. He was a member of Grace Harvest Church in Moses Lake, Wash., and Cornerstone Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed gold-panning with his brother. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Sheridan; his wife, Julia; four daughters, LaCosta Dyer, Jami Lewallen and Monica MacMillan, all of Casper, and Audreanne Lewallen of Douglas; 11 brothers and sisters, including Andy, Venita and Denice Lewallen, all of Sheridan, and Shelly Svilar and Cheryle Brewer of Moses Lake; and nine grandchildren. Clarence E. Newton
A celebration of the life of Clarence E. Newton, 90, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. July 21 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Revs. David Duprey, Kevin Jones and Raymond Clark officiating. Services will be followed by private family inurnment in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Newton died Thursday, July 6, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Cody to Earle E. and Eliza (Bushnell) Newton. He graduated from Cody High School in 1933. He attended Arkansas Tech University-Fayetteville for two years. He returned to Cody in 1936 to start a seven-year career as a chemist. He worked for Husky Oil Refinery in Cody and Laurel, Mont., Ohio Oil Co. in Lovell, and Empire Oil Co. in Thermopolis. He married
Ruth Rose Moore of Powell in 1938. He served in the Army during World War II from 1944-45. After the service, he established a plumbing business in Cody. In 1950, the family moved to Sheridan, where he worked for his brother, Harold Newton, owner of Jersey Creamery. Mrs. Newton died Feb. 4, 1954. Mr. Newton married
Marion M. McNickle on June 1, 1957. The family purchased Dairy Service a raw milk pickup service for Jersey Creamery in 1959. They sold the business in 1970. Mr. Newton was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Kalif Shrine and Jesters, American Legion, Elks Lodge and St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed being with family and friends, gardening, fishing, hunting and camping. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Garold Newton and Mickey McNickle, both of Sheridan, Rick Newton of Buffalo and Wesley Newton of Longmont, Colo.; a daughter, Penny Hoffman of Sheridan; a sister, Genevieve Strow of Cody; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Joseph Frank Arnieri
Memorial services for Sheridan County native Joseph Frank Arnieri, 90, of Edgewater, Colo., will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Mr. Arnieri died Friday, June 30, 2006, in Denver. He was born Oct. 14, 1915, in Kleenburn to Luigi and Mary C. (Gavita) Arnieri. He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area and was a 1932 graduate of Sheridan High School. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad in Sheridan until 1968, when he transferred to Alliance, Neb. He was transferred to Denver, where he retired in January 1969. He married
Helen Armstrong on Oct. 14, 1937, in Sheridan. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Democratic Party. He was an avid Yankees fan. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry, and two sisters, Rose Green and Jean Springer. Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Moll of Seattle and Patty Johnson and Marcia Bates, both of Edgewater; two sisters, Mary Smith and Ann Arnieri, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Christina Lynn Raulerson
Christina Lynn Raulerson, 20, of Cheyenne, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, in Layton, Utah. She was daughter of Susan Drew and sister of Tim and Nick Raulerson, all of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel with the Rev. Mark Maas officiating. Cremation will follow at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens. Miss Raulerson was born Aug. 12, 1985, in Cheyenne and had lived there most of her life. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Other survivors include a brother, Greg Mehr of Webster, Fla.; and two sisters, Tiffany Raulerson of Cheyenne and Angel Crawford of Webster. Martha Louise Westika
Memorial services for Martha Louise Westika, 43, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Ms. Westika died Thursday, June 29, 2006, as the result of a car accident while she was vacationing in Raymond, Ill. She was born Nov. 26, 1962, in Sheridan to LeRoy and Susie Westika. She was an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne. She grew up in Sheridan, attended Holy Name School and was a 1982 graduate of Sheridan High School. She attended Sheridan College for one year. She worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital for a few years. In 1990, she received her X-ray technician degree from Great Falls, Mont. She moved to Casper and worked at Wyoming Medical Center. She returned to Sheridan in 1998 to be closer to her family. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and working on her yard and flowers. She attended school functions and sporting events that involved her children. Survivors include two children, Nysha Rae and Michael Wade, both of Sheridan; her parents; and two brothers, Anthony Wade of Ogden, Utah, and Paul Michael of Sheridan.
Scott George Shafer
Scott George Shafer, 21, of Casper died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in a rafting accident at the North Platte River water park in Casper. He was brother of Chris Wallace and Cindy Craft, both of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Worland and 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Park Community Church in Casper. The Rev. Mike Brush will officiate at both services. Bryant Funeral Home of Worland is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Shafer was born March 9, 1985, in Worland to Mary Ellen and Steve Shafer. He lived in Burley, Idaho, for a short time when he was a toddler, then his family returned to Worland, where he grew up and attended school. He was a 2003 graduate of Worland High School and a 2006 graduate of Casper College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in aviation. He wanted to work in aviation from childhood and worked for G&W Aviation in Thermopolis during his junior year in high school. As a senior, he worked for Sky Aviation as a flagger and loader in a spray-plane operation. While attending Casper College, he worked as a line technician for Trajen Flight Support and also for Skywest Airlines at the Casper airport. He had private, instrument and commercial pilot ratings and became a flight instructor for Wyoming Air Corp. during his last year at Casper College. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and also enjoyed hiking, boating, waterskiing, snowboarding, playing golf and riding his motorcycle. In addition to his brother and sister, survivors include his father of Casper; his mother, Mary Ellen Girard of Worland; two sisters, Stephanie Shafer and Melissa Law, both of Casper; and a stepbrother, Jay Girard, and a stepsister, Dina Trang, both of Dillon, Mont. The family has asked that memorials be made to the Scott Shafer Memorial Scholarship, through the Casper College Foundation, or the Scott Shafer Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund through First Interstate Bank in Casper. Evan Ivar Martinsen
Evan Ivar Martinsen, 92, of Butte, Mont., died Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at St. James Healthcare. He was brother of Richard Martinsen of Sheridan. Funeral services were Friday in First Presbyterian Church, Platinum and Excelsior, with the Rev. Wayne Fisher officiating. Burial with military and Masonic honors was in Mountain View cemetery. Mr. Martinsen was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Salt Lake City to Ivar and Mathea (Hage) Martinsen. He attended grade school and high school in Butte and was a graduate of Butte High School and Kinman Business College. He married
Virginia Dougherty on Nov. 4, 1939. They lived in Lewistown and Dillon, Mont., before settling in Butte, where Mr. Martinsen worked for Sullivan Valve and Engineering, Domestic Manganese and Development and the Montana Department of Transportation, from which he retired He served in the Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge 24 AF&AM, Baghdad Temple of the Shrine and American Legion Post 1 and was a lifetime member of BPO Elks 240, all in Butte. He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Christine Strom. In addition to his brother, survivors include three daughters, Sandy Kieckbusch of Whitehall, Mont., Susan Harrington of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Sally Bardsley of Butte; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Athareda `Rita' Zak Nordstrom
A celebration of life for former Sheridan resident Athareda Rita Zak Nordstrom, 73, of Casper will be 5 p.m. today at 402 Schiller St. in Sheridan. Mrs. Nordstrom died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Life Care Center in Casper. She was born May 12, 1933, in Minneapolis to Simon and Della (Hayes) Zak. She grew up and attended school in Minneapolis. She later owned and operating a beauty salon. She married
Charles A. Nordstrom Jr. on June 18, 1955. They moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. Mr. Nordstrom died in 1966. Mrs. Nordstrom moved to the Sheridan area. She owned a restaurant and cooked in many other restaurants over the years. She moved to Tucson, Ariz., for a few years before moving to Casper in 1999 to be near her daughter. Survivors include her daughter, Cindy, and five grandchildren.
Darrel Calvin Ewoldsen
Memorial services for Darrel Calvin Ewoldsen, 80, of Sheridan will be 1 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Richard Snider officiating. Mr. Edwoldsen died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at his residence. Cremation has taken place at his request. He was born March 17, 1926, at the home of his grandparents in Sheridan to Thomas and Grace (Zingg) Ewoldsen. He worked as a dairyman and farmer with his father, spending his life on the family ranch on Big Goose until he retired. He also drove school buses for Sheridan County School Districts 1 and 2 for many years. He married
Bethel Jean Middleton on May 23, 1980, in Story. He enjoyed the mountains, woodworking, visiting with friends, travel and hunting. In his younger years, he and his horse, Traveler, were in Sheridan-WYO Rodeo parades. He also enjoyed dances at Big Goose Community Clubhouse. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary. Survivors include his second wife, Bethel Jean; a daughter, Sandra Bradley; stepchildren Debi Christman, Cathy Konzal, Brenda Ennis and Bill Sterck; a sister, Alta June Pool; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Dorothy A. Mortenson
Memorial services for Dorothy A. Mortenson, 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Keller officiating. Mrs. Mortenson died Thursday, June 29, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Oct. 15, 1919, in Sheridan to A.S. Doc and Maude (Barnes) Russell. She grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from high school in Big Horn. She worked on Curley Wetzel's ranch for a time. She married
Carl Mortenson on Nov. 28. 1940, in Sheridan. They owned a dairy farm near Big Horn for 15 years, then ranched on Pass Creek for Dorothy Kerns. They moved to Ranchester in 1966. Mrs. Mortenson worked at haying with her husband, then cleaned homes for many years. She also worked for Bloedorn Lumber from 1997 until this spring. Her husband died in 1999, and she moved to Sheridan in 2004. She enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and painting. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Becky Bruce of Spearfish, S.D., and Margo Humes of Moorcroft; three grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Melba Irene Gilkey
Melba Irene Gilkey, 85, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Sheridan Manor. At her request, cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Gilkey was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Carrollton, Mo., to Marion and Mary (Prout) Fisher. She was a bookkeeper at the Bank of Commerce. She married
Franklin Gilkey on April 21, 1939, in Gillette. They resided in Story for 14 years. Mrs. Gilkey enjoyed gardening, quilting, needlework and collecting antiques. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, Joe. Survivors include a daughter, Sally Francis of Sheridan; siblings Charles Fisher of Sheridan, Alfred Bekebrede of Davis, Calif., and Mary Chesnut of Roseville, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Athareda `Rita' Zak Nordstrom
Former Sheridan resident Athareda Rita Zak Nordstrom, 73, of Casper died Thursday, June 29, 2006, in the Life Care Center in Casper. A celebration of life will be 5 p.m. Thursday at 402 Schiller St. in Sheridan. Cremation will occur, and she will be buried in Colorado Springs, Colo., beside her husband. Arrangements are with Bustard's Funeral Home of Casper. She was born May 12, 1933 in Minneapolis to Simon and Della (Hayes) Zak. She grew up and and went to school in Minneapolis and later owned and operated a beauty salon there. She married

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Tipton of Casper; a sister, Helen Laumann, and brother, Wayne Chmielewski, both of Sheridan; and five grandchildren.
