Fon Elizabeth Taylor
Graveside services for Fon Elizabeth Taylor, 87, of Sheridan will be later in Sheridan Municipal cemetery under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Taylor died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. She was born July 5, 1918, in Hysham, Mont., to Kurt Fred and Elizabeth (Becker) Cook. The family moved to the Sheridan/Big Horn area when she was a child. Her father worked for the Wallop Ranch. He died when she was 7. Her mother married
Adam Helzer, and the family moved to Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Taylor later moved to the Gillette area, where she graduated from high school. She received an elementary permit to teach school and taught at the Camblin Ranch, south of Gillette. She also was a substitute teacher in the Sheridan area. She married
Tyrus Raymond Taylor on March 22, 1941. She was a member of the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, Akcita Win and various Parent-Teacher Associations. She was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Central Wyoming Council of BSA for distinguished service to youth. In 1977, she was the first woman elected to the Central Wyoming Council. She enjoyed spending time at the family cabin in the Big Horn Mountains, sewing, gardening and collecting stamps. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980 and by a sister and a brother. Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Ketchum of Rio Ranch, N.M.; two sons, Kent and Mark, both of Sheridan; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Warren Gilbert
Former Story and Sheridan resident Warren Gilbert, 82, of Torrington died Thursday, March 2, 2006, in Torrington Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Harrison Bible Church in Harrison, Neb. with the Rev. Matt Parker officiating. Arrangements are with Colyer Funeral Home. Mr. Gilbert was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Redwing, Colo. to Paul and Minnie (Baehr) Gilbert. He grew up and was educated in Heurifano County. He was a 1945 graduate of Colorado A&M with a degree in civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific as a field artillery officer with the Seventh Infantry Division during World War II. He was released from active duty in 1946 after having served one year with the occupation troops in South Korea. He married
Kathleen Eberspecher Hilderbrand in 1968 in Rawlings. He worked for the Department of Agriculture & Soil Conservation Service for 34 years and was project engineer on Cloud Peak, Willow Park, Kearney Lake and the original Cross Creek and Dull Knife reservoirs. He retired in 1979 and moved to Story, where he worked part time at the State Fish Hatchery and was water commissioner for the Story area. He also spent five summers as reservoir tender for Cloud Peak and Willow park reservoirs in the Big Horn Mountains. The family moved to Sheridan in 1999. Mr. Gilbert continued his work as water commissioner in Story. The family moved to Torrington in 2002. He was a member of the Story Lions Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife, of Torrington; a daughter Karen Gilbert of Palmyra, Neb.; a son Mike of Kansas City, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Gerri DeCoteau-Bohm of Hermiston, Ore., and Jill Winter of Salt Lake City; a stepson, Todd Hilderbrand of Casper; a sister, Pat Freeman of Austin, Texas; a brother, Paul of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Special Touch program at Torrington Community Hospital or to the Torrington Meals on Wheels.
Leonard G. Staudinger
Funeral Mass for Leonard G. Staudinger, 72, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Dickinson, N.D., with the Rev. Basil Atwell as celebrant. Burial will in be St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel in Dickinson, with Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Staudinger died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center in Sheridan. He was born Nov. 6, 1933, to Dominic and Emma (Kubischta) Staudinger on the family farm in Dunn County, N.D. He grew up and attended schools in the Dickinson area. He was a milk-runner for Cloverdale Creameries. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and was honorably discharged in 1965. During his years of service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal and China Service Medal. After his discharge, he moved to Sheridan and worked at Sheridan College. He enjoyed hiking and fishing. He was preceded in death by a sister and two infant brothers. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Ann Pelzel of Sacramento, Eleanor Bachmeier of Billings and Angie Huschka of Ellenburg, Wash. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
Grace Jandreau
Grace Jandreau, 81, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Jandreau was born July 31, 1924, in Emerson, Iowa, to Walter and Geneva (Wood) Allison. She attended schools in Iowa and Missouri. She moved to Wyoming. She married
Don Jandreau in 1955. She enjoyed flowers, camping, bowling and cake decorating. She volunteered at the Sheridan VA Medical Center and the veterans home in Buffalo. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include two sons, Don of Washougal, Wash., and Jerry of Gillette; two daughters, Janice Wheeler and Shirley Roush, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Elaine Donahue of Maryville, Mo., and Sharon Weber of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Paulette Brimmer
Paulette Brimmer, 57, of Sheridan died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at her residence. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Brimmer was born April 30, 1948, to Paul and Bobbie Lee Shaver. She married
Michael Brimmer. She was a graduate of Sheridan College. She enjoyed being with her family, visits to the ocean, camping and cooking. She was a member of the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library board of trustees for many years. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Sterling. Survivors include her husband, of Sheridan; a son, Lyall of Sheridan; her mother, of The Dalles, Ore.; and a brother, Mark Shaver of The Dalles.
Amy M. Smee
Memorial services for Amy M. Smee, 86, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church UCC with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Smee died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Smee was born April 16, 1919, in Hershey, Neb., to Jacob Douglas Myers and Nettle May Lucinda Carbah Myers. When she was 10, the family moved by covered wagon from Guernsey to Buffalo. She married
Jess Smee in Buffalo in December 1937. The couple moved to Dayton and were the first residents there to have a telephone which was needed by Mr. Smee in his duties as chief of the Ground Observer Corps during World War II. Mrs. Smee helped start the school library and helped start a hot lunch program for the school in Dayton before the federal program began in 1948. She was a childcare provider in Sheridan for more than 16 years. She enjoyed spending time at the family's cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge for 60 years and served in all three branches of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, a brother and a granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Merilla Mae Aarstad of Libby, Mont., Frances Fran Smee Ford of Sheridan; a sister, Ruth M. Himebaugh of Taylor, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church UCC, 100 W. Averil Augusta DePue
Memorial services for Averil Augusta DePue, 95, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Sheridan Manor Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. A private family inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangments are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. DePue was born Sept. 1, 1910, in Alliance, Neb., to David and Lida (Cox) Lewis. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 5. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1930. She attended nursing school in the old Sheridan Memorial Hospital, graduating from nurse's training in 1933. She began a career in nursing at the hospital. She married
Roger DePue on Jan. 16, 1937, in Buffalo. She was a member of First Christian Church and the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed writing poetry, working crossword puzzles and collecting recipes. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Muller and Virginia Fiedor, both of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Myrtle Peterson
A celebration of the life of Myrtle Peterson, 94, of Sheridan will be 7:30 tonight at the Country Kitchen Restaurant. Burial of her cremains will be at a later date in Ackley, Iowa. Mrs. Peterson died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Westview Health Care Center. She was born in Burt, Iowa, to Julia (Yost) and Charles Ama. She graduated from high school, earned a teaching degree and spent 20 years teaching in rural schools. She married
Woodrow Peterson in Bethany, Mo. She helped him operate a local filling station and was a teller at Ackley (Iowa) State Bank for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband and adopted children.
James D. Lindsey
Funeral services with military honors for former Sheridan resident James D. Lindsey, 76, of Buffalo will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Buffalo with Mike Garneau officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Trails State Veterans cemetery in Evansville. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Lindsey died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Gillette to Benjamin and Laura (Kincaid) Lindsey. He enlisted in the Army in May 1951, fought in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in June 1953. He was a ranch hand for the PK Ranch for many years. He lived in Sheridan County for 20 years. He enjoyed reading, watching people, fishing and going on outings with friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Archie, Duane and Kenneth; and a sister, Betty. Survivors include five nieces and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Laila Eleanor Pixley
Funeral services for Laila Eleanor Pixley, 69, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, S.D. Burial will be in Whitewood cemetery. The family will be at Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan from 10 a.m. until noon Friday to greet friends for viewing and visitation. Additional viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Kincade Funeral Home in Sturgis, S.D. Mrs. Pixley died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born to Oscar and Selma Balo in rural South Dakota near St. Onge in a Finnish-speaking community. She learned English in elementary school. She grew up in rural South Dakota and attended Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D. She married
Hugh Pixley on Dec. 7, 1952. She owned and operated restaurants in South Dakota, Wyoming and Washington and owned and operated tourist resorts in South Dakota. The family also had a business transporting train crews for Burlington Northern, owned a potato chip factory in Belle Fourche, S.D., and owned a taxi cab business in Sheridan. Mrs. Pixley enjoyed fishing, painting and cooking. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Monte Evans. Survivors include five sons, Milo Evans of Penrose, Colo., Merle Evans of Warrenton, Va., Mike Pixley of Upton and Marty and Mark Pixley of Sheridan; a brother, Guy Balo of Whitewood; five sisters, Edna Baker of Belle Fourche, Hilma Saari of Basin, Etta Gaylord of Portland, Ore., Hazel Kessler of Sheridan, and Wilma Reynolds of Shreveport, La.; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Ken R. `K.R.' Warren
Former Dayton resident Ken R. K.R. Warren, 57, of Billings died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings. Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today in Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Rosary will be 6 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Turner, Mont. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas. Cremation will follow. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Turner cemetery. Mr. Warren was born Nov. 11, 1948, in Havre, Mont., to Thaine and Elinor (Fairbank) Warren. He graduated from high school in Turner and attended Eastern Montana College in Billings. He married
Shirley Carlat in 1977. They moved to Phoenix, where Mr. Warren was a land-law examiner for the Bureau of Land Management. He was one of 10 recipients of the Presidential Award as an outstanding federal employee in 1985. He retired from the BLM in 1990. The family moved to Dayton in 1996. He and Mrs. Warren were later divorced. Mr. Warren returned to Billings in 2000. He was a member of the Classic Car Club and an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include a son, Eric of Dayton; four brothers Tom and Scott of Turner, C.J. of Belgrade, Mont., and John of Kimball, S.D.; two sisters, Helen of Bozeman, Mont., and Arlene Lininger of Belgrade; and two granddaughters. Harry `David' Mathis
Memorial services for Harry David Mathis, 67, of Ranchester will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Attendees are asked to wear casual attire, according to the funeral home. Mr. Mathis died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. He was born March 3, 1939, to Harry M. and Ruth Mathis in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1965. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 24 years until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed reading, collecting rocks and hats and spending time in the Big Horn Mountains. Survivors include a brother, George, one niece, one nephew and one great-nephew, all of Sheridan. Helen Martha Clark
Mass of Christian Burial for Ranchester native Helen Martha Clark, 90, of Buffalo, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. George Von Kaenel as celebrant. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in the church. Visitation is until 5 p.m. today in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside committal services following the Mass. Mrs. Clark died Monday, April 24, 2006, in Buffalo. She was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Ranchester to Joseph and Kate Washut. She started school in Ranchester and later moved with her family to Buffalo, where she attended high school. After high school, she worked in Sheridan at Boyd's Super Market and for Safeway. She moved to Buffalo in 1948 and worked for Pioneer Lumber as a bookkeeper. She attended night school at Hyman Business College in Sheridan, receiving a two-year degree as a bookkeeper. She married
Ray Clark on Jan. 20, 1950, in Buffalo. She was a social worker with the Department of Family Services for 27 years until she retired in 1981. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She belonged to a bridge club and was an avid player. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband; a son, Ray Jr. of Buffalo; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Catherine Ann Brantz
Funeral services for Acme native Catherine Ann Brantz, 74, of Cheyenne will be 2 p.m. Friday in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Sheridan with the Rev. Richard Heine officiating. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be at the Fiedor Ranch in Ranchester following services. Mrs. Brantz died Saturday, April 22, 2006, in LifeCare Center in Cheyenne. She was born Aug. 15, 1931, in Acme to Agnes and Edward Fiedor. She was a 1949 graduate of Ranchester High School. She married
Edward Brant on July 30, 1950, in Hardin, Mont. She worked with her husband in several business ventures including Bondi Bros. Grocery and the OK Corral in Sheridan. She also worked as a nurse's aide at Sheridan VA Medical Center. She enjoyed her grandchildren, flowers, birds, wildlife and dancing. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Sheridan Women of the Moose. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, John and Karl Fiedor; and two grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters, Cheryl Broyer and Gloria Brantz, both of Cheyenne, Carol Henson of Mesa, Ariz., and Diane Ford of Gillette; three sons, Ed of Rapid City, Tom of Gillette and Don of Cheyenne; six brothers, Tom Fiedor of Casper, Joe, Robert and Pete Fiedor, all of Sheridan, Ed Fiedor of Laramie and Jack Fiedor of Ranchester; three sisters, Theresa Mock of Mesa, Joan Mlinar of O'Neal, Neb., and Marie Parkinson of Gillette; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Charles Stanley Pfister
A Christian Wake Service for Dr. Charles Stanley Pfister, 89, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Neal Pfister, son of the deceased, and the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Dr. Pfister died Saturday, April 22, 2006, at his residence. He was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Sheridan and grew up on a ranch in the Pumpkin Buttes area of Campbell County. He was a 1941 graduate of Creighton University College of Dentistry. He enlisted in the Army Dental Corps on Aug. 10, 1942, and served in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of captain Jan. 22, 1946. He practiced dentistry in Sheridan until August 1978, when he retired. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church for more than 64 years. He was preceded in death by a son, John Charles. Survivors include his wife, Cleo; three other sons, William, Michael and Kevin; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Kenneth Casteel
Funeral services for Kenneth Casteel, 96, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Forman officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Visitation is until 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Casteel died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born June 14, 1909, in Zwingle, Iowa, to Clyde and Hannah (Denlinger) Casteel. He married
Bernice Clemen on April 21, 1932, in Galena, Ill. He was a truck driver all his life. He began work at Armour Packing Co. in 1930 and later worked for County Trucking and Prucka. He retired from Interstate Systems in 1973 and moved to Sheridan with his family for the mountains and hunting. He enjoyed raising cows, which were his pets. He worked part time for the Garbers in Big Horn until the late 1980s, when he began caring for Mrs. Casteel full time. She preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Duane of Sheridan; a sister, Marie Carranza of Huntington Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
