George Cherni
George Cherni, 87, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Richard Gaudet
Richard Gaudet, 64, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in the New Hampshire State Veterans cemetery in Concord. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Gaudet was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Bath, Maine, to Joseph and Mary (Gallant) Gaudet. The family moved to Nashua, N.H., in 1950. Mr. Gaudet graduated from high school there in 1959. He joined the Navy after graduation, serving on destroyers in the Atlantic Ocean from 1959 until 1965, when he was honorably discharged. He returned to New Hampshire and worked as a contract draftsman/engineer for military research and development until 1986, when he moved to Fort Collins, Colo. He moved to Wyoming in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. Survivors include a son, Richard of Merritt Island, Fla.; three daughters, Yvonne Gosselin of Cocoa, Fla., Pamela Sullivan of Hillsboro, N.H., and Liane Gaudet of Fruitland Park, Fla.; a sister, Jean of Phoenix; and six grandchildren.
Gary L. Lewis
Gary L. Lewis, 68, of Sheridan died Monday, May 16, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis was born June 15, 1936, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Edward and Vera (Carahoff) Lewis. He grew up in Idaho and served in the U.S. Army. He came to Sheridan in the mid-1990s. Survivors include a brother, Jack, of Las Vegas.
Marie Tibbets
Marie Tibbets, 95, of Sheridan died Saturday May 28, 2005, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be later this summer. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Tibbets was born April 16, 1910, in Smithwick, S.D., to Orin Gilbert and Johana Ida (Rahyfeldt) Anderson. Her parents separated when she was a child, and she lived with her grandparents until she was 6, when she went back to her mother. Mrs. Anderson homesteaded on Donkey Creek near Gillette and later worked as a housekeeper and ranch cook for the Bently Ranch. Her daughter was raised with the Bently family and later with the Levy Howes family. She married
Coyne C. Tibbets on the stage of the Lotus Theater (now the WYO Theater) on Nov. 26, 1926. They farmed on Dutch Creek and developed a coal mine, delivering coal to Sheridan for $1 a ton. In 1938, the Tibbetses went into the sheep business on the shares with Al Lonabaugh. Mrs. Tibbets often served as camp-tender, hauling groceries to the main camp and cooking for the sheep-shearing and haying crews. The Tibbetses bought range north of Clearmont near Passaic and farmed and ran sheep and cattle until they retired for reasons of health in 1980. Mrs. Tibbets supported the National Farmers Union and was counselor and youth leader in the Arvada-Clearmont area for 30 years. She managed the NFU summer camp near Ten Sleep for several years. She enjoyed the mountains, fishing, playing the piano and gardening. Her husband died in 1985. Survivors include a son, C.L. Tibbets of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Milo Dean Richards
Sheridan native Milo Dean Richards, 72, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died Friday, May 27, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Gillette's Mount Pisgah cemetery under direction of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home of Gillette. A funeral service also took place Memorial Day at Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista. Mr. Richards was born Oct. 25, 1932, in Sheridan to Elmer and Edna Richards. He played basketball in Sheridan before joining the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, where he married
his wife, Doris. After Mr. Richards' military service, the family moved to Montana, residing there 24 years. Mr. Richards worked at various occupations including gas station owner, bowling alley manager and part owner of McDonald's Restaurants. Mr. Richards later opened his own McDonald's Restaurant in Gillette. The couple lived in Gillette for 10 years before moving to Sierra Vista, where they bought two McDonald's Restaurants. Mr. Richards retired from McDonald's after 28 years with the company. He enjoyed golfing and woodworking. A sister, Erlys Bartles, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Patrick of Sierra Vista, David of Great Falls, Mont., and Paul of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter, Connie Lawson of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Dean Robert Whisler
Funeral services for Dean Robert Whisler, 81, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Monday at United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Robert Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Whisler died Thursday, July 28, 2005, at his residence. He was born April 11, 1924, in Rozet to David Riley and Vida Pearl (Duval) Whisler. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a ship's cook second class in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. He married
Helen Kottraba on Sept. 14, 1946, in Lincoln, Neb. They lived in Kaycee and Gillette before moving to Sheridan in 1998. Mr. Whisler was self-employed in several occupations, including operating a drilling rig. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dean Rusty of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Deana May Orona of Worland; a brother, Leonard of Upton; two sisters, Evelyn Donner of Gillette and Ellen Cummings of Basin; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Nellie Mae Stuka
Visitation for Nellie Mae Stuka, 87, of Sheridan will be 2-7 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Ms. Stuka died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Dietz to Joe and Anna (Wierzbicki) Stuka. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wyoming and was an English teacher for more than 25 years in Worland. She retired in 1979. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was a member of Sheridan Heritage Center, Sheridan County Historical Society, AARP, Sheridan Woman's Club, Retired Teachers and Kappa. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anne, and three brothers, Joe, Henry and Carl. Survivors include four sisters, Wanda Godawski of Chicago, Stella Gorzalka of Sheridan and Henrietta Sutphin and Mary Weber, both of Casper; and a brother, Walter of North Carolina. Margaret Carolyn Johnston
Margaret Carolyn (Weiers/VanLoan) Johnston, 67, of Spearfish, S.D., died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at her residence. She was sister of Janice Mates of Big Horn. Visitation will be 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D., and 9-10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis. A rosary and Christian prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Church with the Rev. Arnold Kari officiating. Burial will be in Bear Butte cemetery. Mrs. Johnston was born Nov. 21, 1937, in Sturgis to Robert and Angela Ann (Weiers) Hyde. She grew up in Sturgis and moved to Newell, S.D., as a young girl. She married
Arthur Johnston on Feb. 14, 1955, in Belle Fourche, S.D. The couple lived in Lead, S.D., before moving to Washington state. The family moved to various sites in the Western United States while Mr. Johnston worked in construction. In 1967, they moved to Idaho Springs, Colo., and Mrs. Johnston assisted her husband in operating a construction and trucking business. She moved to Spearfish in 1975. Survivors include a son, Michael of Spearfish; two daughters, Carol of Belle Fourche and Jane (Weiers) Lilly of Phoenix; a brother, Robert P. VanLoan of Gainesville, Texas; two other sisters, Donna Jerome of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Anita McDonald of Yuma, Ariz.; her stepfather, Morris Hafner of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; three adopted daughters, Sue Burneson, Julie Wagner and Twyla Reede; and two grandchildren.
Dorothy Driskill
A memorial service for Dorothy Driskill, 75, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. A reception at Knights of Columbus Hall, 301 E. Brundage St., will follow. Mrs. Driskill died Monday, July 25, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Vancil Memorial Funeral Chapel in Springfield, Ill., and a funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Vancil Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Rose Lawn cemetery in Springfield. Mrs. Driskill was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Decorah, Iowa, to Wellington and Leora (Gremm) Foltz. She grew up and attended schools in Decorah and Springfield. She married
John Driskill on June 12, 1993. She was a supervisor at Horace Mann Insurance. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards. She was preceded in death by two husbands and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Amundesen and Fay Foss; a sister, Delores Prosperini; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Byron Charles `Pogo' Chamberlain Jr.
Viewing for Byron Charles Pogo Chamberlain Jr., 52, of Sheridan will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. The family has requested that attendees wear bright colors. Mr. Chamberlain, an artist, athlete and educator, died Monday, July 25, 2005, after a battle with cancer. He was born June 17, 1953, in Billings to Dorothy (Halvorsen) and Byron Chamberlain Sr. He married
Jane Howe on June 19, 1982, in Miles City, Mont. He was competed in track, basketball and football and quarterbacked the Billings Senior High School Broncs during his junior and senior years. He graduated from Billings Senior in 1971 and continued his education and football career at Rocky Mountain College and Eastern Montana College. He was a 1976 graduate of EMC with degrees in business and art. He worked as a commercial artist for a year before returning to Eastern, where he earned a master's degree in special education and guidance counseling. He accepted a position with Sheridan County School District 2 in 1979. He served as a learning specialist, then as a school counselor at both Sheridan Junior and Senior high schools for 26 years. He coached basketball, football and track at Sheridan Junior High School. He was assistant football coach at SHS for 13 years, during which time the Broncs won the state championship three times. Mr. Chamberlain also coached his own children for many years in community sports. He enjoyed walking with his wife, snowboarding, spending time with his family and playing handball at the YMCA. He also enjoyed old movies particularly those from the 1970s and could play the piano or organ by ear. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Kelsey, and son, Beau, all of Sheridan; his parents of Billings; and two sisters, Mary Ann Connors of Billings and Lori Herbaugh of Littleton, Colo. Cathryn `Kelly' Cooley
Former Sheridan resident Cathryn Kelly Cooley, 93, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, in Loveland, Colo. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. A reception will follow at Holy Name Catholic Church.
Wilbur Neil `Pally' Pallesen
A graveside memorial service for Wilbur Neil Pally Pallesen, 67, of Sheridan will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hanna cemetery with the Rev. Judy Lawrence officiating. Mr. Pallesen died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. James A. Nisselius
James A. Nisselius, 60, of Gillette died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla. He was brother of Judy Tenney of Sheridan. Funeral services were July 19 at First Baptist Church in Gillette with the Rev. Mark Jervis officiating. Burial was in Mount Pisgah cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 42. Mr. Nisselius was born Feb. 7, 1945, in Springfield, Mo., to Jack K. and Christine (Rutherford) Nisselius. He attended Gillette elementary schools and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1964. He attended Casper College, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1965. He served four years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. His tours of duty included the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. He was honorably discharged from Norfolk, Va., in 1969. He entered the Army National Guard in 1989 and served until he was medically discharged in April. He was a member of the American Legion Drill Team for 20 years. He worked in oil fields in Campbell County, Oklahoma and Prudoe Bay, Alaska. He worked in Los Alamos, N.M., before returning to Gillette in 1978. He worked as a master welder at Jacobs Ranch Mine and later for Kennecott Corp. for 25 years. He married
Anne E. Nowers on Jan. 19, 1973, in Anchorage, Alaska. They were married
until March 1990. He married
Barbara Jane Beck on Dec. 7, 1991, in Gillette. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Gillette from the age of 12. Mr. Nisselius enjoyed collecting, especially military memorabilia. He was an expert marksman in the Army National Guard. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the USS Forrestal Association. In addition to his sister, survivors include his wife and parents, all of Gillette; sons, Matthew J. Nisselius of Tokyo, Nathan B. and Michael T. Nisselius, both of Denver, Clinton Ellyson of Commerce City, Texas, Curtis Ellyson of Sioux Falls, S. D., and James Beck of Gillette; and five grandchildren. Alvin J. `Whitey' Twite
Alvin J. Whitey Twite, 76, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 23, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Twite was born Sept. 25, 1928, in Carson, N.D., to Benhard and Nettie (Danielson) Twite. After graduating from high school, he worked for Lytle & Green Construction Co. as a tractor operator. He served with Company C, 83rd Engineer Contingent Battalion in the Korean War from 1951-52. He married
Margie Johnson in 1958 in Pierre, S.D. After military service, he was an engineer for various construction companies, working on projects in Montana and Wyoming. He was a skilled crane operator. He belonged to Operating Engineers Local 400 of Montana and OEL 800 of Wyoming. He enjoyed boating, fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Voight; a brother, Benny; and a grandson. Survivors include four children, Pat and Jackie Twite and Susan Oltmanns, all of Sheridan, and William of New Eagle, Pa.; six sisters, Melva England of Glyndon, Minn., Lily Buchmeier of Mandan, N.D., Lila Hayes of Mesa, Ariz., Rose Gerheart of Surprise, Ariz., Grace Scrantlin of Kansas City, Mo., and Sherry Erickson of Rapid City.
