Oscar James ‘Jim’ Deering
Former Dayton resident and Tongue River High School principal Oscar James “Jim” Deering, 81, of Buckeye, Ariz., died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, in Buckeye. Services with military honors were Sept. 11 at Palo Verda cemetery in Palo Verde, Ariz. Survivors include daughter Jenean Deering and five grandchildren of Sheridan.
Gary Rue Barclay
June 13, 1948 – November 20, 2010
Gary Rue Barclay departed this life November 20, 2010 in Sheridan, Wyoming, at the age of 62 years. Gary was born June 13, 1948 in Lebanon, MO, to Robert Gibb Barclay and Anna Florene Brisch Barclay. Gary made his profession of faith to Christ by being baptized, at eight years of age. He served his Lord faithfully, until he was called to his eternal rest. Gary graduated high school from Newcastle, WY in 1966. He continued his education by graduating in 1970 from BHSU in Spearfish, SD with a BS in Business Administration. He was involved in numerous activities during his education. He played football, basketball, track, cross-country, and baseball. He sang with the Black Hills Singers at BHSU, and was also in a numerous musical and theater productions with his twin brother Larry. Which included the lead in the production "Oklahoma" at BHSU. Gary had spent his career working for companies that include Shell Oil Company (10 yrs), Federal Bentonite (10 yrs), and American Colloid Company (20 yrs). He retired in 2001 from ACC. He spent the last few years working at Shiptons, Warehouse Market, Cook's Painting, and helping his friend Dale Holder with his business. His life’s passions that he shared dearly with his twin brother Larry and nephew Brandon included numerous hunting and fishing trips. Gary was an avid golfer and played in many golf tournaments with Larry and Brandon. He also had a passion for reading and had read so many books. He was always there for his family. Attending high school graduations, weddings, the births of nieces & nephews and great nieces and nephews. His heart was as big as the sky. Gary is survived by his twin brother, Larry G.(Dianne)Barclay of Sheridan, Wyoming; a sister, Joan Holwell of Newcastle, Wyoming; a brother, David (Joyce) Barclay of Lake Charles, LA; and his stepmother, Charlene Barclay of Lebanon, MO. Special nieces and nephews Brandon Barclay of Brigham City, UT; Shannon (Josh) Baity of Belle Fourche, SD, Brianne (Ryan C) Harris of Rapid City, SD, Nelson Holwell, Teresa Clingan, Heather Boyer, Jennifer Barclay, Christopher Barclay, Aaron Barclay, and Lauren Barclay. Ten great nieces and nephews, several cousins, aunts, and an uncle all mourn the loss of their loved one. And a number of hunting, fishing and golfing buddies and just good friends throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his father Robert "Gibb" Barclay and Florene Barclay and an infant brother. Eugene L. Watkins, M.D.
January 1, 1918 – November 20, 2010
Eugene L. Watkins, M.D., who died at the age of 92, lived a long and productive life in the practice of medicine as a general surgeon. His skill and compassion were recognized by numerous awards and professional positions. His greatest goal in life was to relieve human suffering, which included U.S. Army Service caring for combat injuries during World War II. Throughout his career, each patient received his utmost dedication, skill, and compassion. After retirement, he settled in Wyoming on the family ranch. He found great reward in this endeavor, and loved the sagebrush prairie of the Triple W Ranch on Lower Crazy Woman Creek. He is survived by his daughter, Prascilla Watkins Welles, and two grandsons, Ian Watkins Welles and Henry Outerbridge Welles and wife, Sarah Benson Welles, who will forever be inspired by him, and will miss his spirit, determination, and great joy in life. The family has planned a private service to be held at the ranch.
Ethan Lisle Faurot
March 3, 1992 – November 19, 2010
Ethan Lisle Faurot, 18, of Ranchester, WY., passed away on Friday, November 19, 2010 in Ranchester, WY.
Ethan was born in Sheridan, Wyoming on March 3, 1992. He was raised in the Sheridan area, graduating from Tongue River High School in May of 2010.
Ethan loved his girlfriend, Ashley and the Big Horn Mountains. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow-mobiling, horses, and being at the cabin in the mountains.
He was a member of the National Elk Foundation, and St. Edmund’s Catholic Church in Ranchester.
He was preceded in death by his Grandfather John E. Swan and Uncle David Faurot.
He is survived by his mother, Judy (Robert) Palrud, of Ranchester, WY, father; Bob (Delece) Faurot, of Sheridan, WY., birth mother; Racine Metcalf, of Sheridan, WY., adopted parents; Melissa and Jimmy Velos, Dayton, WY., brothers; Jason Faurot, Ranchester, WY., Tory Music of Sheridan, WY., Taylor Velos of Dayton, WY., adopted sister; Heather Buchanan, of Riverton, WY., Noelle and Gabrielle Golinvaux of Sheridan, Monique Golinvaux of Spearfish, S.D., Alyssa (Zack) Hendricks of Sheridan, WY., Kristen Golinvaux of San Diego, CA., Jared (Vanessa) Golinvaux of Gillette, WY, grandparents; Jessie Swan, Poland, OH., Donald D. Rodney K. Pertile
April 26, 1929 - November 15, 2010
PERTILE - Rodney K. Pertile, age 81, formerly of Sheridan, WY and Ironwood, MI, died Monday, November 15, 2010 after one week in the hospital. Born in Ironwood, MI to Pete and Pearl Pertile, Rodney graduated from Luther Wright High School in 1947 and from Michigan Technological University in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering. He worked for several mining companies in iron ore, uranium, phosphate and coal, and retired from Shell Mining Co. in 1993. He married
Violet Holappa in Hancock, MI in 1952. Rodney is survived by his wife, Violet; daughter, Victoria and her husband Tom; son, Michael Pertile and family; brother, Peter Pertile and wife Alice; sister, Faye Pertile; and grandchildren, Mathew Mason, Sara Shafor and husband Justin, and Hannah Mason. They retired to Sheridan, WY where they resided for 17 years and recently moved to Rio Rancho, NM. He loved fishing, hunting, and football until three years ago when poor health stopped all activity except therapy. No public services will be held. Harold T. “Hal” Harrington
August 2, 1930 – November 12, 2010
Harold T. “Hal” Harrington, 80, passed away on November 12, 2010 at the Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place and at his request, there will be no services; a “Celebration of Life” will be held at the Kalif Shrine on Monday, November 22, 2010, starting at 3:00 pm. Hal was born in Erie County, PA. On August 2, 1930, to Miller Harrington and Thelma (Manville) Harrington. Hal moved to Wyoming in 1949, and began his 34 year career with Mountain Bell Telephone Co. Hal met and married
Joan Smith of Lusk, WY in February 1952. They were married
almost 59 years. Hal worked throughout Wyoming as a lineman. In 1954 he became a Combination man in Worland, WY. In 1963, he worked a year at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on various government projects; returning to Worland as a Central Office Repairman in 1964. Part of 1965 he worked at NATO Headquarters in France on government projects. From 1965 to 1969 Hal was a Communications Technician at the Pacific Missile Range in California. His final three assignments were as Central Office Technician in the following areas: Yellowstone National Park, 1969 – 1971; Casa Grande, Arizona 1971 – 1974; and in Sheridan, Wyoming from 1974 – 1983. After retiring, Hal started a small fencing business and built fence for ranchers around Sheridan County until 1994. Hal was a member of Masonic Lodge #43, Kalif Shrine, Shrine Oriental Band and a life member of the Worland Elks Lodge #1908. In his earlier years, he loved to ride his horses, go with family and friends hunting and fishing and take trips in his motor home. Hal is survived by his wife, Joan of Sheridan, his son Kenneth (Kathy) of Casa Grande, AZ., daughter Deborah Ranney (Robert) of Camp Verde, AZ. and daughter Cindy Roadifer (Marshall) of Mesa AZ. One brother, James Harrington (Virginia) of Springboro, PA. Five grandchildren and their spouses, six great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. Thomas L. McDowell, 93, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Mountain View Living Center at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Glenna Audrey Beaver
August 4, 1921 – Nov. 16, 2010
Glenna Audrey Beaver, age 89, died November 16, 2010, at Sheridan Manor, Sheridan, Wyoming. Glenna was born in Brainerd, Minnesota, August 4, 1921 to Lorenzo Carl and Muriel (House) Jones. In 1947 she moved to Sandpoint, Idaho. Glenna went on to live in Washington, Oregon, Kansas, and Nebraska before coming to Lusk, Wyoming in 1965 and later moving to Dayton, Ranchester, and Sheridan. In later years she traveled throughout the Western United States including Alaska and Hawaii, before returning to live in Sheridan. Glenna enjoyed playing the piano, singing, painting, and camping in the Big Horn Mountains. Her favorite campground was Dead Swede where she would brew her coffee over a campfire. Glenna is survived by three children, Sandy Eno (Joe) of Martinez, CA, Randy Sundquist (Florence) of Ranchester and Pamela Shandy (Rex) of Freeman, MO, twelve grandchildren Rusty, Vicki, Kathy, Karl, Jay, Michelle, Jennifer, Suzanne, Jacob, Cody, Cory, and Brian and fourteen great-grandchildren. Also a niece Janeal Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Beaver and sister Mabel Johnson. Private services will be held at a later date. Lavon Conner, 85, of Decker, passed away on November 14, 2010 at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan, WY. Lavon was born on November 7, 1925 in Lewellen, NE to John and Carrie (Yetter) Wiltrout. She married
Arlo W. Conner in Gillette in 1940. She spent 65 years of her life as a rancher in Decker, MT. Lavon enjoyed flower gardening, leathercraft, weaving and playing the piano. Lavon was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Dan Wiltrout, sisters; Alma Zalud, and Bertha Baird. She is survived by a sister Vivian Evans of Pocahontas, AK. Although she had no children she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of life for Lavon will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 3:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home with Darrel Wiltrout officiating. Edward Martin Holst
June 17, 1921 – November 8, 2010
Former Sheridan resident Edward Martin Holst, Jr. died peacefully of natural causes on November 8, 2010. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on June 17, 1921, to Edward M. Holst, Sr. and Rosemary Dorothy Holst. A memorial is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2010, at St. John's Church of Christ, 434 Cleveland Street, Woodland, California. Ed was a veteran of World War II, having served as an Ensign in the US Navy aboard the LST 1130. At war's end, he returned to Pueblo and married
his childhood sweetheart and lifelong friend Vivian Newell. In 1949, He graduated from Colorado State University, attended and graduated in 1951 from the University of Arkansas with a Master of Science in Agronomy. His career in the sugar beet industry included work for Holly Sugar Corporation in Swink, Colorado and Sheridan, Wyoming, the Red River Valley Cooperative in Hillsboro, North Dakota, and Spreckels Sugar in Woodland, California. He retired in 1986. Ed enjoyed the Rocky Mountains and was immensely fond of the Big Horns. He was an avid fly fisherman and a lifelong hunter of arrowheads. He is survived by Vivian and their three sons, Aaron (Donna) Sheridan, Alan (Carolyn) Woodland and Zeke (Cindy) Sacramento, granddaughters Christina Gerheart, Silver City, New Mexico, Jennifer, Pocatello, Idaho, and Katherine, Santa Cruz, California, and grandsons Bryan, San Diego, California, and Trevor Lish, Pocatello, Idaho. Helen C. Legerski
August 18, 1914 – November 9, 2010
Helen C. Legerski, formerly of Sheridan, passed away at the Point Frontier Life Care in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. She was born on August 18, 1914 in Carneyville, Wyoming to Andrew and Ava (Washut) Michalek. Helen attended Sheridan schools and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1933. She also received additional training which allowed her to teach elementary education in the Dutch Creek area for four years. Helen married
Joseph C. Legerski in June 27, 1937. She was a homemaker and mother of their seven children. Helen was a member of Holy Name Church and the Alter and Rosary Society which she greatly enjoyed. She especially enjoyed cooking with her family on the holidays, crocheting, knitting, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading, and being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph, daughter Michelle Schleyer and son Gregory. She was also preceded in death by one brother; Peter Michalek and three sisters; Anne Wantulock, Miltilda Walker and Mary Waisner. Helen is survived by five sons; Charles of Billings Montana, David, Eugene, and Donald of Cheyenne Wyoming and Richard of Prosser Washington. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation for Helen will be at Kane Funeral Home on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at 6:00 pm with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 pm. Father Ron Stolcis will be officiating. interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery with a reception to follow at the Holy Name Parish Hall. Nancy Cook Marmont
March 3, 1954 – November 1, 2010
Nancy passed away in Seattle, WA on November 1, 2010 after a courageous seven year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Nancy was born in Sheridan, Wyoming on March 3, 1954 to William and Julia Cook. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1972. Nancy lived in Everett, Washington before moving to Silverhill, Alabama in 1999. She had returned to Seattle in March 2010. Nancy’s most rewarding career was the 10 years that she spent working for the Boeing Company in Everett, Washington. Nancy also worked as a medical technician in Alabama, and a title clerk for Chris Myers Dodge in Daphne, Alabama before she became ill. Nancy will be remembered for her kindness and willingness to help out those in need, yet asking for nothing in return. She had a gentle spirit that will truly be missed. Nancy is survived by her daughters Stephanie Marmont and Jennifer Marmont of Alabama and her sister Judy Miller of Federal Way, Washington. Her Grandchildren include Carly Byers, Nicholas, Christian, Julia and Grayson, all living in Alabama. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Jacob Michael Byers of Alabama.
Thomas L. McDowell
December 21, 1916 – November 7, 2010
Thomas L. McDowell was born on December 21, 1916. The first day of winter in Centralia, Washington. He passed away peacefully on November 7, 2010 in Sheridan, Wyoming at the VA Mountain View Living Center. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Wolf Pack. He lived in many places including Alaska, Arizona, California, Iceland, Idaho, South Carolina and Washington. Tommy spent a lifetime clam digging, picking oysters, fishing and shrimping in the waters of Washington state. He easily identified every species of fish or clam and enjoyed the company of his boys on those frequent trips, training them. He picked thousands of pounds of blackberries and made jam for all his friends and family. He retired from Humana Hospital in Tacoma, Washington as a stationary engineer. Tommy held the highest engineer’s license available in Washington. He also worked for St. Regis and Buffelins Lumber companies in Tacoma as an engineer. He was never without work and was often referred to as a “workaholic”. He loved working in boiler rooms. Tommy, also known as “Bicycle Tom”, will be remembered for his story-telling, woodworking, blackberry jam, and his love for “prairie-dogging”. He had a passion for steam engines and learned how to operate one at the tender age of eight, by his father's side. He could identify every steam engine manufactured; tell you where it was built, the date it was built and what job it had to do. He could be seen riding his bicycle on the Parkman loop getting he “exercise”. He was an avid fisherman and loved to travel, always exploring new territory. The past few summers were spent traveling with his cousin Jan back to Washington for his yearly “peach run”. Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Loreen and son Carl. He is survived by two brothers and one sister. He is also survived by his son Dale (Sherrill) McDowell of Seaside, Oregon; daughters Terry (Larry) Troyer of Puyallup, Washington; Barbara (Ken) Talmadge of Sheridan; Donna (Dave) Harrington of Tacoma, Washington and Deloris (Tom) Blackwell of Gaffney, South Carolina. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren will continue to hear his stories and relive his adventures. He also leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. There will be a Military Honor Service at Conner Battlefield, in Ranchester, Wyoming at 1:30pm on Saturday, November 20, 2010.
