Herman Lawrence Sanders
June 5, 1915 – October 11, 2010
Herman Lawrence Sanders passed away on Monday, October 11, 2010 at the age of 95, surrounded by family. In his own words regarding his birth "While my memories do not go back quite that far, I have it on good authority and records that I was born June 5, 1915 in a farm house about one mile east of Glenville, Nebraska. This was the same house where my father was born." His parents were Henry Sanders and Anna Gross Sanders.
The Great Depression left an indelible mark on Herman’s life, as he learned to stretch a dollar and never forgot that lesson. Due to his parents’ and younger brother Raymond’s health problems, at the age of 14, he and 16 year old brother Melvin supported the family with odd jobs and work at a dairy, where Herman earned his board and room plus $1.50 each week. He worked in agriculture the rest of his life until he retired in 1984. Herman met his life-long wife and companion, Elaine Peters, in 1938. They were married
on October 15, 1940. Their favorite recreation was dancing, which always drew chuckles from onlookers, as Herman was 6’4" and Elaine was 4’9". They were married
over 68 years when Elaine died on February 5, 2009. Both Herman and Elaine wanted a large family, which was good as they were both devoted Catholics. Again, in Herman’s words "The stork seemed to keep a constant eye on us." Their first son Henry died at birth on August 11, 1941. In the next 14 years, eight more children were born to them, six in Nebraska and two more in Wyoming, after they purchased a farm/ranch at Clearmont, WY in 1952. While in Wyoming, they also took in foster-children. Three (Louie Sickler and Mike and Clifford Haley) remain close to the family. Along with running his place and raising kids, Herman was on the Board or active in the Agriculture and Soil Conservation Service, Clearmont School System, Farmer’s Union, Farmer’s Home Administration, the Pratt & Ferris Ditch Company, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Tragedy struck Herman’s family in 1976 with the death of a three year old grand-child, Stephanie. This tragedy was compounded in 1982 by the drowning of son Mike and six year old grandchild Ryan, Stephanie’s Dad and brother. Herman and Elaine retired to Sheridan in 1985 and became active with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Sheridan Senior Citizen’s Center where they sang with the Sheridanaires. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, and was active with the Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where his family was twice selected as the "Knights of Columbus Family of the Year." He also participated in several sports in the Senior Olympics at the State and National Levels, winning many medals. He participated as a biker in several Clearmont Days Dash and Splash triathlon races. In his retirement years, some of his pastimes were camping and fishing, bowling, playing cards, visiting with friends and reading. Herman will be greatly missed by his surviving children and their spouses: Nancy and Herb Hower; Leland (Bud) Sanders and Jay Meng; Doris Sanders and Jack Wilke; Jim and Judy Sanders, Patrice Sanders, Alan Sanders; and Roger Sanders and Stacy Page. He was an inspiration and friend to his ten surviving grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Herman is preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his parents, three brothers (Joe, Melvin and Raymond), two children (Henry and Michael), and two grandchildren (Stephanie and Ryan.)
A Christian wake for Herman will be held Friday, October 15, 2010 at 6:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home.
