He was scoutmaster, baseball coach, fisherman, irrigator and tractor driver. Don and Shirley kept the boys on the move and were models of community service and love for Sheridan County. Shirley died in 1979. In June 1980 Don married Elaine Eisenman. Elaine’s three children soon appreciated Don’s outgoing, welcoming nature. Don loved Sheridan County and the opportunities it offered. He enjoyed serving on the Sheridan College Board of Trustees for six years, the B.F. Perkins Foundation Board, the Wyoming Real Estate Commission for 5 years and numerous Boy Scout positions. He was Wyoming Realtor of the Year in 1966. Don was a lifelong Democrat. Virginia Lee Powell
November 28, 1928 - January 18, 2010

Our beloved wife and mother, Virginia Lee, peacefully, and with the grace, beauty and good humor that defined her, passed into the hands of our Lord on January 18th, 2010. She was at home with her children and husband at her side. Virginia Lee was born to Lee and Dorothy Raisch, in Kenosha, Wisconsin on November 8, 1928. Her parents were always her biggest supporters truly believing they had the perfect child. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois while Virginia was small. She attended Ripon College, in Ripon, Wisconsin where she met her "world's best husband, " Peter. She entered the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration graduating with a Master's degree in 1952. Upon graduation she was immediately hired by The State of Illinois, Department of Children and Family Services where she worked as a Child Welfare Worker. In 1953 she and her beloved Peter (by then Father Peter) were married in Chicago. Their children, Katherine, Christina, John and Pasha (Stephen) were born in quick succession, filling her life with noise, chaos, and laughter. In 1961, Virginia lovingly and proudly worked side by side with her husband as he became the first priest to serve Chicago's Native American community (a service he still performs) and founded Saint Augustine's Center for American Indians to provide spiritual and social services to Chicago's Native American population. Virginia, with her MSW degree, and at the urging of the staff at St. Augustine's, worked as the Supervisor of Casework Services until 1986. Throughout those years Virginia used her exemplary skills in counseling and organization to carry a case load, and co-coordinate and train the casework staff with her friend and the first female director of a Native American social service agency, Amy Skenandore. By 1972 St. Augustine's was the largest Native American casework agency in the nation. Virginia was always a champion of what was fair and just. From the civil rights marches of the 60s where she marched in tenuous situations, without fear, holding her children close, to helping her husband turn St. Augustine's into an agency predominately staffed and directed by Native Americans, Virginia did what she thought was right without concern. At the same time and with the same patience, she modeled the ability to work and still be a full time mother. She and her husband brought the children with them wherever they went for work from Uptown Chicago to Lame Deer, Montana. A woman more dedicated to her parenting does not exist. When her children reached the teenage years, the stack of books on 'understanding your teenager' became her nightly reading instead of Agatha Christie. Despite her extraordinary work contributions she would always respond to the question of "what, as a child, had she wanted to be when she grew up" with the simple answer: "a mother". Her childhood desire became her greatest vocation. She was the delight of not only her children but also their spouses who claimed Virginia as their own. Treasured by her grandchildren, family night dinner will never be the same without Grandma's cooking and interest. Virginia shared her husband's profound love of Native American people and culture, and was blessed by love in return both by her friends and coworkers at Saint Augustine's and by her adopted relatives of the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Nations. She was the adopted daughter of John Stands In Timber and his wife Josephine One Bear Stands in Timber of the Northern Cheyenne People and Thomas and Susie Yellowtail of the Absalokees or Crow People. Both sets of adopted parents provided her with a loving extended family. Virginia, the best of mothers, was also the best of daughters. In 1987, Virginia remodeled her Chicago home to accommodate caring for her mother and father - whom she loved as much as they loved her. Her family was never a burden and she never hesitated in her desire to care for her parents in their final years which allowed them to pass on, the last one in 1999, in the comfort of the home she had created for them. Virginia loved to travel, her most constant companions being her mother and daughters. Together they visited England, the Continent, Israel and the Far East. However, since 1964, her most loved home was the family cabin in Big Horn, Wyoming, on the old Floyd Bard homestead on the Red Grade in the Big Horn Mountains. She loved the mountain above all places and there was never a back road that did not call her name or a sheep trail unworthy of traversing. But it was her friends here, old and young, that she treasured and delighted in most. Each year, she eagerly looked forward to getting back to the cabin and spending time with her friends. In the eighties, when the demands of teenage children and aging parents restricted her time at Saint Augustine's, Virginia taught herself the stock market and with her usual determination and inquisitive mind developed an impressive mastery which she used to benefit the ongoing work of Saint Augustine's. A beautiful red head of vibrant personality and brilliant mind, Virginia was and is, in eternity, the ideal wife, mother, grandmother, friend and associate. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law and her favorite person, brother-in-law William (Bill) Powell. She is survived by her husband, Father Peter J. Powell, sister-in-law, Junko Powell-McGuiness (Thurman), and children Kathy (Michael), Christina (John), John (Genai) and Pasha and grandchildren, Rebecca, Sean, Meghan, Peter, Nathanial, Caitlin, Matthew and Ian, Masses of the Resurrection have been offered for Virginia in the Chapel of St. Augustine's Indian Center. Private interment will be near the family cabin in Big Horn, Wyoming, the place she loved most on earth. A Mass of the Resurrection is being offered in the family chapel on Red Grade.
