MSgt (Ret) Willmer Levon “Bama” Carden
June 26, 1935 – July 8, 2010
MSgt(Ret) Willmer Levon “Bama” Carden, 75, was born June 26, 1935 in Sylacauga, Alabama to George and Rilla Carden. He passed away July 8, 2010 in Coeur d Alene, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Georgia “Dode” Carden; two sons, Darryl Reid Carden and Anthony Alan Carden; one daughter, Susan LeeAnne Carden; one brother, George Gary Carden, and numerous cousins and in-laws. He was married
to his wife – the former Sheridan resident Georgia Kukuchka in Oct 5, 1961. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and after completion of Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas, served honorably in Mississippi, Germany, South Carolina, Nevada, California, Okinawa, Oregon, Colorado and Turkey. He retired in April 1974. Eight years of his 20-year USAF career was served in Colorado Springs, Colorado and he lived in the Springs for 38 years before moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in June 2004. After retiring from the Air Force, he was employed as a sporting goods salesman/store manager, service station manager and for the most part, an employee of Defense Contractors, Ford Aerospace and Communications Corporation, Loral Command and Control Systems and retired from Lockheed Martin in April 1993. Bama was an accomplished athlete and participated in most sports involving a ball during his lifetime. He was a renowned fastpitch softball pitcher during his Airforce career where he set, and holds many records unlikely to be broken. He also distinguished himself as a pitcher throughout the USA and several foreign countries and in 1988 was the second man inducted into the Colorado ASA Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame. Following retirement, he took up and became addicted to the game of golf and took great pride in the number of rounds and number of different courses he played each year. His request for cremation has been granted. There will be no services.
Miles A. Floretta

Miles A. Floretta, 95, from Sheridan passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 in Brewster, WA. Miles was born on June 11, 1915, to John Peter and Emma Marie (Wegher) Floretta, in Cambria, Wyoming. He married
Ruth Frances Humes in Sheridan, Wyoming in December, 1941. They had four children. Miles worked at Ed Hammer Inc., for forty-five years and retired as Service Manager. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Miles was a life-long resident of Sheridan and a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church. He enjoyed his farm, especially all his animals: rabbits, pigs, poultry, cows, sheep, horses, dogs, (anything he could sneak onto the farm with the exception of goats and guineas which his wife would not allow). Miles also enjoyed fishing in his favorite secret fishing holes and hunting, particularly late in life on the Zezas Ranch in Buffalo, WY. He loved his family and friends. Miles was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son, Paul Dean Floretta. He is survived by his children, Karen Cecelia Foutch, (Ron) of Carlton, WA, Mark Allen Floretta, (Joanne) of St. Louis, MO, and David Lee Floretta, (Betty) of Port Susan, WA, nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Visitation for Miles will be at Kane Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 6:00 pm with Christian Wake Services at 7:00 pm. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan with Father Ron Stolcis officiating. A reception will follow service in the Parish Hall. Inurnment will be held at Sheridan Municipal cemetery Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 9:00 am with full Military Honors. Regina Ehnis, 43, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, July 8, 2010, in Billings Clinic, Billings, MT after a short battle with lung cancer. Regina was born January 6, 1967, in Howell, MI to George & Wanda (Casto) Arnett. Regina grew up and graduated from high school in Pinckney, MI. Regina married
Chris Ehnis on September 20, 1986, in Pinckney. In 1995, they moved to East Jordan, MI where she worked for automotive related companies. They moved to Sheridan in 2007. She worked as a nutrition aide at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Regina enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and bird watching. Regina was preceded in death by her father George. Regina is survived by her husband Chris; son Andrew and daughter Amanda of Sheridan; mother Wanda Arnett of Ellsworth, MI; brothers George Arnett of Ellsworth, MI, Marion Arnett of Alma, MI and Brian Arnett of Brighton, MI; sisters Rebecca Garrett of London, OH, Lenora Arnett of Weberville, MI, Martha Whitaker of Weberville, MI and Nancy Vieira of Ann Arbor, MI and numerous nieces and nephews. James LeRoy Sams
July 9, 1951 – July 8, 2010
Funeral service for James LeRoy Sams, 58, of Biddle, Montana will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Sheridan, Wyoming with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery with military honors by the Wyoming National Guard and the American Legion Post #7. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Sams passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010 in Gillette, Wyoming of cancer surrounded by loved ones. He was born July 9, 1951, to Lee Roy and Virginia (Bates) Sams in Sheridan, Wyoming. He attended elementary schools in the Moorehead and Bayhorse areas, while finishing his high school education in Bozeman, Montana, and Hulett, Wyoming. Jim spent years working with his family on the ranch before being drafted into the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam Conflict from 1971—1972 where he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He married
in 1970 and they had two daughters. He spent many years being a truck driver and hauling loads all across the United States and Canada. He truly loved being behind the wheel and getting to see the country. He returned to his first love, the ranch after his father’s illness and remained the genuine cowboy he was known to be. He was a true cowboy who loved working cows, riding horses, watching the PBR, spending time with family and friends and guiding hunters. He will be remembered as a hard working, fun loving friend, father, and grandfather. Jim was preceded in death by his father and brothers Bobby and Harry. He is survived by his daughters, Tammy Christiansen and Janine Ehrler, of Gillette, Wyoming with their husbands, Doug Christiansen and Dan Ehrler, his brother, Bill Buckendahl, of California, and grandsons Brandon Ehrler, and Colton Christiansen.
Fern Margaret Pierce Ebertz
August 12, 1914 – May 24, 2010
Fern Pierce was born on August 12, 1914, at home on the farm north of Scranton, North Dakota, the first child of Alma Nichols Pierce and Charles Pierce. She was married
on June 5, 1940 to William (Bill) Alvin Ebertz, a Congregational minister serving churches in the western Dakotas. Over a period of 34 years, she and her husband served churches in Mott ND, Jamestown ND, Hillsboro OR, Sloan IA, Wichita KS, and Sheridan WY. She spent the last 25 years of her life at Pilgrim Place, a retirement community for church workers in Claremont CA. On Monday, May 24, 2010, at the age of 95, Fern died at the Pilgrim Place Health Services Center. Fern was a teacher throughout her life. Following high school, she earned a rural teaching certificate, and taught for several years in one-room schools near her home, often riding a horse to school. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Jamestown College in 1938 and then taught for two more years before her marriage. Her talents were well used as she wholeheartedly assumed the responsibilities of a pastor’s wife. After the children became more independent, she was drawn back into formal teaching, particularly to the education of special needs young people. To better equip herself for this field, she devoted nights and Saturdays to earn a master’s degree in special education, continuing to teach special needs students in Wichita and Sheridan until her retirement in 1980. Her vocation then led her to volunteer to teach English at Dansalan College in the Philippines for a year. Upon return to the United States she became involved in Church World Service projects and, throughout the 1980’s, served on the United Church Board for World Ministries. This led to educational mission trips all over the world and the sharing of that information with congregations back in the States. Another organization which was close to her heart and to which she devoted many hours was the International Christian Scholarship Foundation, which awards scholarships to needy students throughout the world. Fern is survived by four of her children: Mary (Ken) Freese of Fort Collins CO, David Ebertz of Gillette WY, Lois (Allan) Stuchlik of Englewood CO, and Roger (Susan) Ebertz of Dubuque IA. She is also survived by one sister, Florence (Cliff) Rider of Everett WA, and one sister-in-law, Alice Pierce of Pierce ND, and by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Ebertz, her first son, Louis William, two sisters, Clara Olson Overbo and Eunice Jorstad, her brother, Floyd Pierce, and one grandchild. A service in celebration of Fern’s life was held in Claremont on June 25, 2010. Another service will be held at Pierce Congregational Church in Pierce ND on July 12 at 2:00 PM, after which she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Bill, and their son, Louis, in the Pierce Congregational cemetery, in the community where she grew up. Lois R. Namtvedt
September 4, 1928 – July 6, 2010
Lois R. Namtvedt, 81, of Sheridan, WY, died July 6th, 2010, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Namtvedt was born September 4, 1928 in Sheridan to Wade H. and Florence (Madden) Ratcliff. Lois was raised in Dayton and Dietz, WY. She graduated from Sheridan High School with the Class of 1946 then went on to The University of Wyoming. In 1948 she married
Milo Namtvedt. Lois worked in The University of Wyoming Athletic Department for head football coach Bowden Wyatt and head basketball coach Ev Shelton from 1949 to 1951. While there, she also tutored student athletes. Mr. Namtvedt went to work for Peter Kiewit and Sons in 1952. Milo and Lois settled in Sheridan in 1966 where they continued to raise their children, Conrad and Karyn, and Milo continued his work with Peter Kiewit. After Milo passed in 1995, she moved to Cheyenne to be near her son, daughter and 3 grandchildren. Mrs. Namtvedt enjoyed her family, Wyoming Cowboys athletics, was a member of The First Presbyterian Church, The Big Horn Mountain Eagles, American Legion 7th Cavalry Drum and Bugle Auxiliary, and The Cowboy Joe Club at the Coaches Club Level. Lois was recognized as the University of Wyoming Alumni Association Football Foundation 2008 College Football Fan of the Year. She traveled around the country with the team for many years; rarely missing a game. Lois was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Namtvedt is survived by one son, Conrad Namtvedt of Sheridan; one daughter, Karyn Namtvedt, her husband Kevin Fuller of Franklin, TN; and three grandchildren, Melissa Fuller Czech, Lindsey Fuller, and Brock Fuller. Viewing will be held on Friday, July 9th, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. James R. Maurer

James R. Maurer, 59, of Sheridan, WY died Friday, July 2, 2010, in his Sheridan home. James was born July 18, 1950, in Minot, N. Dakota to Harold & Ora (Howie) Maurer. Jim moved to Sheridan with his family in 1953 and attended Sheridan High School. In his younger years, Jim worked on oil rigs, as a security guard, janitor for the American Legion and as a painter for Roy Schwartz for over 20 years. Jim enjoyed hunting, dartball, artifact hunting, reading, music and playing trivia (which he won frequently) on the local radio stations. He loved spending time with family and friends. Jim was a member of the Big Horn Mtn. Eagles #4169, Son’s of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Janet Richards and Hazel Rotolo and brother John Maurer. Jim is survived by his daughters Jamie Maurer (Bill) of El Mirage, AZ, Wendy (Brien) House of Gillette, WY and Pam (Gary) Klier of Ranchester, WY; sisters Connie (Bill) Mairs of Wasilla, AK and Helen (Paul) Deutsch of Ranchester, WY: and two grandsons Donavan and Carl Klier. Jeffrey Owings, 49, of Sheridan passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings, MT. Jeffrey was born on June 6, 1961 in Sheridan to Patricia Rae (Doyle) and Lelin Eugene Owings. Jeffrey graduated from Sheridan High School and attended Trade school. He married
Colleen Mallinger in Sheridan on May 22, 1991. Jeffrey enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, 4 wheeling and other outdoor activities. Most of all he enjoyed his family and friends. Jeffrey was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and brother-in-laws. He is survived by his wife and daughters, Aspen Nicole Owings of Fayetteville, NC.; Barbara Joanne Owings, Katherine Ann Owings and Jennifer Susan Owings, his mother and brother John Owings, all of Sheridan, a sister Shelly Pinyan of Denver, CO; and Shannon Chambers of Champion, NE. James A. Kurtz
1923 – July 1, 2010
James A Kurtz of Auburn, WA, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2010. Jim was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1923, son of the late Noah V. Kurtz and Martha E. Packard. He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Rodger, Sam, Joe, and Allen, and his sister, Gene. Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Regina; sons, James Jr. (Carolyn) of Kansas City, MO, Richard (Kathy) of Wolf Point, MT, and Michael of Auburn WA; daughter, Cynthia Goodrich (Bruce) of Auburn, WA; sister, Mary Jane Culver of Laguna Woods, CA; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jim met his wife, Regina Jablonowski, in Washington, DC, while he was working as a Senate page and attending George Washington University and she was working in the Pentagon. They were married
on November 11, 1943. Jim served in World War II as a B29 co-pilot, often flying low-altitude missions to drop supplies to POW camps in northern Japan. After the war, Jim obtained a BS in Engineering from the University of Wyoming and entered a career in government service, first with the Bureau of Reclamation in Colorado and Nevada, and then with the Federal Aviation Administration in Nevada, Utah, and Washington state, where he retired at the end of 1980. In addition to being a supportive father and devoted husband, Jim was a church leader, Scoutmaster, youth baseball coach, and baseball and football referee. After his retirement Jim and Gina enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends all over the country (often staying in their tent trailer). He was also active with the local Democratic Party and served as Clerk of Session for the First Presbyterian Church of Renton. He was also a proud supporter of the Seattle Museum of Flight. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 10, at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church of Renton, 2640 Benson Rd., Renton, WA 98055. Interment will be in the Tahoma National cemetery in Kent, WA, in late August. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Renton, the Museum of Flight, 9404 E. Marginal Way S, Seattle WA 98018, or to your favorite charity.

Richard K. Kiester
September 12, 1936 – July 3, 2010
Richard K. Kiester died July 3, 2010 in McKinney, TX. Richard was born September 12, 1936 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Thomas and Melissa (Owsley) Kiester. Dick graduated from Sheridan High School in 1955 and enlisted in the US Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1959. He married
Darlene Forster June 24, 1960 in Sheridan. They later divorced but remained close. He was a baker at the VA Hospital from 1960 to 1975, when he suffered a stroke. He was a former member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a Scout Leader, Little League coach and enjoyed all sports his children participated in. Richard enjoyed their family trips to North Dakota visiting Darlene’s family every summer. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and teaching them card games, many of which they still play today. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, trips to the mountains, all sports and loved animals, especially the family basset hound “Chico”. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jim and Dean, half brother Don Apperson and son-in-law Kenny Allred. Richard is survived by his former wife Darlene of Sheridan, daughters Dawn Allred of Gunnison, UT., Deena (Tom) Huth of Princeton, TX., Debby Husske (Jared Gamble) of Sheridan and son Darin (Jill) Kiester of Casper. Sisters Doris (Robert) Watt, Judy (Dwaine) Bobbitt, and brother David (Linda) Kiester all of Sheridan. Grandchildren Shaunna (Travis) Vincent, Kayla Huth, Todd Huth, Christi (Dan) McGrath, Michael Husske, Mitchell and Jacob Kiester. Great Grandchildren Malli McGrath, Bridger and Kanyon Vincent. Cremation and a Memorial Mass at Holy Name Catholic Church has taken place. The family suggests that memorials be made in Richard’s name to the Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 E Ridge Road. Stephen (Peter) Valentine III
January 1, 1926 – July 1, 2010
Stephen Valentine III (Peter), 84, long time resident of Birney, MT. died July 1st, 2010 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, WY. from pneumonia. He was a former resident of Wilton and New Canaan, CT. He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Christine S. J. Valentine. He was the proud father of five children; Stephen Valentine IV (Alice), Cary Randolph Valentine, John Dee Valentine (deceased) (Trudy), Samuel Titus Valentine (Annie), and Sarah Hull Valentine Jackowitz (Jerome), and his sister Louise Pattison. He had 8 grand-children and 5 step-grandchildren. Peter was born January 1, 1926 in Brooklyn New York and attended Brooklyn Friends School. He graduated from Princeton School of Engineering with degrees in both Chemical and Mechanical engineering. He worked for Socony Mobil for 20 years where his Master’s Thesis was adapted for use in the catalytic cracking process of crude oil. He also worked for H.J Baker Co. He traveled all over the world with both companies. After he married
Christine in 1974, they moved to Birney where he owned and operated The Ranch Store Inc., until 1981. In 1981 he was gifted another 29 years of life after a heart operation led by Dr. Hewes Agnew and the Cardiac Unit at Deaconess Hospital. He later taught mathematics and science at Chief Dull Knife College in Lame Deer until he retired. His greatest achievement in life was to be a wonderful parent to his children; his Quaker background supported his beliefs in the importance of family life. In retirement he produced four scale models of St. Labre Indian School for their 100th anniversary. He enjoyed model trains and had a special interest in models of Victorian-Age British soldiers. He scanned old family photos and transcribed the letters of his ancestors for his family. An easterner at heart Peter grew to love the wide open spaces of Montana, especially the Birney area. His happiest years were spent in Birney in the quiet solitude of the Big Sky along with his devoted and lovely wife, Christine. He was an active member of the Northern Plains Resource Council and opposed to the building of the Tongue River Railroad which he felt would desecrate the beautiful and productive Tongue River Valley.
Peter’s family wishes to thank the following agencies for their loving care during his last month: Sheridan Memorial Hospital Staff and ER personnel; Billings Clinic Med-Flight; Billings Clinic ICU and ATU staff.
