MICHAEL J. GAZUR
AUGUST 9, 1912 - FEBRUARY 24, 2010
Michael J. Gazur of Ranchester, WY passed away February 24, 2010, at the V. A. Medical Center in Sheridan, WY after a brief illness. All who knew Michael will miss his proud, forceful, fiercely independent, yet generous, loving, and cheery approach to life. Michael was born on August 9, 1912 in Kooi, Wyoming to Anna (Kawulok) and Thomas Andy Gazur, recent immigrants from Eastern Europe. Michael's father was employed on ranches in the Sheridan area, so the family moved from place to place. Michael rode horseback to school, but ultimately he replaced the horses with his prized Model A Ford. He graduated from Ranchester High School in May, 1931, where he was a member of the Rustler football and basketball teams. As a young man, Michael worked in the meatpacking business, principally in the employ of George Legerski. World War II changed everything for him. He was inducted into the United States Army, and was deployed to the Pacific in the 35 th Infantry Medical Detachment. Michael was a combat medical corpsman and saw front line action throughout the Pacific. He received two Purple Hearts and a citation for his service on Guadalcanal. His body carried shrapnel from wounds (one was the consequence of shelling by Japanese tanks), and pieces of that metal would fester sores and be expelled from his body from time to time. His war experiences influenced the rest of his life. Following the War, Michael returned to the Ranchester area and resumed employment as a butcher. In July 28, 1949 he married
Anna Louise Cable. Before the marriage, they designed, and he built, their residence in Ranchester. Michael was skilled in many of the building trades, a value that he passed on to his two sons, Roger and Wayne. In 1958, Michael began working at the V. A. Medical Center in Sheridan. Prior to that time, he had served as the Fire Chief for the Tongue River Fire Protection District, so it was natural that he ultimately joined the V. A. Fire Department. He absolutely loved the work and served as a crew chief. Always striving to improve what he saw, he received several awards for his innovations at the V. A. Medical Center. Michael was also active in Town of Ranchester affairs, and served as a Town councilman for many years. After retiring from the V. A., Michael and his wife devoted their time to farming, fishing and hunting, and family. In his seventies, he tried golf with his son Wayne and grandson Joel. On his first outing, without any instruction, he routinely drove the ball 200+ yards. In his words, "This is simple - it is just like driving nails." His wife, Anna Louise, passed away in 1990. In spite of that great loss, Michael continued to carry on, and lived independently until the very last years of his life, when he moved in the fall of 2007 to the Mountain View Living Center at the V. A. Medical Center. His family deeply appreciates the loving care that he received there. In addition to his wife, Michael was preceded in death by his four siblings (George, Helen, Joe and Mary). He is survived by his two sons and their wives: Roger C. Gazur (Mary Kay) of Beulah, North Dakota, and Wayne M. Gazur (Maija) of Boulder, Colorado. He is also survived by four step-grandchildren, Joel and Lija Fisher, Kurt and Brian Frank, as well as three step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His two sons have never had any heroes other than their father. Viewing will be from 10:00am until 2:00pm on Sunday, Feb. 28 th at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family requests that any memorials be of the donor's choice, but with particular emphasis on support of veterans and their families.
