NILA HERMONA GAY MAPEL EISELE
JULY 26, 1913 - OCTOBER 5, 2009

Nila Hermona Gay Mapel Eisele was born July 26, 1913 in Haviland Kansas and passed away October 5, 2009 in Billings, Montana at Saint Vincent Hospital with family by her side. Nila was the daughter of Rollo Vance Mapel and Ella Watkins. They had six children and Nila was the youngest. She was the last survivor of her siblings. Nila’s father was a wheat farmer in Kansas. In 1919 they moved to Wyoming to the Wildcat community in Campbell County north of Gillette. There the family took a homestead and lived in a sod house with dirt floors. There was not a school in their area so her father built a one room school house and her oldest brother taught them school. Nila’s chosen occupation was a teacher. She taught school for three years on the Powder River near Gillette. In her last year of teaching she married Elmo E. Eisele in Rapid City, South Dakota March 30, 1935. Elmo and his family were neighbors to the Mapels. Nila and Elmo had two sons Barten G. {Shirley Matheson}and Robert D. Eisele. Their lives were filled with lots of changes throughout the years. During World War II they moved to Vancouver Washington so Elmo could work as crane operator in a shipping yard and Nila taught nursery. Three years later they moved to Sheridan, Wyoming and the boys graduated from Sheridan High School. Elmo leased and operated the Coffeen Service Station, and in 1959 to 1975 they owned and operated the Green Acres Trailer court located at 5th Ave East in Sheridan. When Nila was a child she loved horse back riding and ranching. Teaching was her primary interest in her younger years and traveling in her later years was her passion. Nila belonged to several clubs one of her favorite was the garden club. She enjoyed being with people, she was always on the go. Her and Elmo traveled as often as they could with the _Good Sam_ motor home organization. Her array of pictures told the story of her life. Nila loved to take pictures and then share the experience with everyone. Nila’s main focus of her life was her six grandchildren. She loved them and spent as much time with them as possible. She had a large walk-in closet that was filled with toys, and you knew when the grand kids were around because every toy would be out of the closet and on the floor. She didn’t mind the messes, she loved the children. She has left behind two sons, six grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. After Elmo passed away in 2004 Nila spent the remainder of her years at Sugarland Assisted Living. She was lonely for her sweetheart of Sixty-Nine years. She spent her days playing dominoes and bingo with friends, exercising, and enjoying family visits. At ninety-six she still had the energy and enthusiasm for life. Her favorite saying was “I get up in the morning and come what may; I just have to roll with the punches.” We love you Grandma, and may your reunion with your sweetheart and your parents be joyful, and may you no longer feel lonely. Memorial service will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Friday, October 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Mark Eisele officiating.
