PAUL FLORETTA

Paul Floretta, 60, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, October 20, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Paul was born December 12, 1948, in Sheridan to Miles and Ruth (Humes) Floretta. He attended Woodland Park School and graduated from Sheridan High School. He was inducted into the Army where he was trained as a mechanic. Paul worked as welder at Craftco Metals for twenty one years; prior to that he worked at Decker Coal. He married
Susie (Carpenter) Lee on August 16, 2003. His passion was snowmobiling. Paul mostly enjoyed time with family and friends, whether it be with Bud Light, cards, visiting, etc. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and gardening. He was highly respected for his mountain knowledge and was referred to as "the trail boss." He was instrumental in getting the Red Grade Warming Hut in place and keeping it up. He was a member of the Big Horn Mountain Snomads and the Sheridan Elk's Club. Paul was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Floretta. He is survived by his wife, Susie, and his father, Miles, both of Sheridan, his sister Karen (Ron) Foutch, Carlton, WA, and brothers Mark ( Joanne) Floretta, Florissant, MO, and David (Betty) Floretta, Port Susan, WA. He is also survived by his daughter, Julie (Leon) Phelps, Gillette, and stepsons, Bob Lee, Indianapolis, IN, and Marc (Cidgem) Lee of Ranchester, and three grandchildren, Mason and Madison Phelps and Alden Coffey. Visitation will be Sunday, October 25, 6 to 9 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 26, 10:00 a.m., at Kane Funeral Home with Reverend John Meyers officiating. interment will follow at Sheridan Municipal cemetery. A gathering for friends and family will be at the Elk's Lodge following the services. A memorial snowmobile ride and gathering will be held at Arrowhead Lodge on December 12. Milea Faye McKee
Milea Faye McKee, 89, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, in Danbury, Conn., while staying with family. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Stamford, Conn. Burial of cremains will follow in St. John cemetery in Darien. Born Feb. 9, 1920, in Salem, Ind., to Augustus and Maude Markland, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. McKee; a son, Robert; and a daughter, Patricia. Survivors include five sons, C. Michael of Wyoming, John of Georgia, James and Thomas of Connecticut, and Joseph of Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Bruce M. Baker
Bruce M. Baker, 63, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, in his home. Private family scattering of cremains will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Sept. 30, 1946, in Sheridan to Joseph and Merle (Jenkins) Baker, he grew up and attended school in Sheridan. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked many years in the oil fields of Alaska, returning to Sheridan in 1997. Survivors include a sister, Kim Wilson of Sheridan; a brother, Larry Baker of Cody; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marjorie Mauck
Marjorie Mauck, 86, of Buffalo died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Graveside funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. MARGUERITE (MIGGS) C. GARBER
JULY 23, 1918 - OCTOBER 12, 2009
Marguerite (Miggs) C. Garber died Monday, October 12 at her residence in Big Horn after a short illness. She was born Marguerite Claire Story in Sheridan, Wyoming on July 23, 1918. She married
Orr W. Garber on December 17, 1938. She raised five children and spent her life dedicated to working on the ranch and supporting Orr in his local and national soil conservation efforts. She drove trucks, chased parts, cooked for ranch hands, withstood the rigors of hunting for lost livestock in the mountains and putting up the hay before it rained. She also subscribed to fine arts magazines and loved to dress in her hats and gloves for outings in to town. Her children and her grandchildren always came first. She enjoyed taking long walks on the ranch and hunting local artifacts, reading, bird watching, writing poetry and gardening. With a keen sense of humor, Miggs laughed easily and enjoyed making others laugh. She was tested throughout her life as she was preceded in death by her parents Blanche Beucler Story and Charles Henry Story of Sheridan, her brother Charles (Chuck) Story of Belgrade, Montana; her husband Orr Willits Garber, sons James Willits Garber and Orr Willits (Chip) Garber, Jr. She is survived by children Richard Story Garber and his wife Elaine Henry, Susan Garber Malyurek and her husband Thomas Malyurek, Thomas Victor Garber and Chip_s widow Reba Garber Johnson; ten grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and her sister, Adeline Story Elliott of Austin, Texas. She was greatly loved and is sorely missed. Private services were held at the Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn. Donations may be made in her name to Hospice of the Big Horns.
Margaret A. Reed
Former Sheridan resident Dr. Margaret A. Reed, 84, of Tulsa, Okla., died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, in Tulsa. Cremation has taken place, and services are planned in the spring. Arrangements are with Stanley’s Funeral Services in Tulsa. Born June 29, 1925, in Newcastle, she spent her childhood in Upton and graduated from Upton High School. She graduated from the University of Wyoming and Creighton University Medical School. She performed her residency in San Francisco, then private practice in Anaconda, Mont., and in Temple City, Calif., as a member of the Temple City Medical Group. After moving to Sheridan with her family, she joined the medical staff at Sheridan VA Medical Center, where she worked in the geriatrics ward. After retiring from the VA in 1995, she did volunteer counseling with Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center for five years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, and a son, Don II. Survivors include a son, Bill, and three grandchildren.
Dorothy Nichols
Dorothy Nichols, 70, of Sheridan died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain Fellowship Baptist Church, 544 W. Eighth St. in Sheridan, with Pastor Jim Coonis officiating. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mussley Funeral Home in Clovis, N.M., is in charge of burial of cremains there. Born in Searcy, Ark., to Elmira (Hobbs) and Eugene Bradford Cooper, she was a licensed practical nurse for most of her working life. She enjoyed volunteering at the Sheridan Senior Center and Relay for Life. She was involved with family and her church and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed arts and crafts and painting. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Caden Reese Holloway. Survivors include two sons, Charles Holloway of Searcy and Richard “Hank” Nichols of Clovis; four brothers, Allen Cooper of Arkansas, Howard Cooper of Texas, George Cooper of Mississippi and Clarence Cooper of Nebraska; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
SHIRLEY KAUFMAN CARTER-DAILEY
Shirley, 72, Indianapolis, IN, and long time Signal Mountain, TN resident, passed Oct. 11th, 2009, after a lengthy, courageous battle against Breast Cancer. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Her determination to live and beat her second round of breast cancer will serve as an inspiration to every life she touched. Survivors include sons, Brandon W. Carter, Chattanooga, TN and Daren W. Carter and wife Sarah of Indianapolis, IN: sisters Carol, Nancy, Peggy and their families. Memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at 11 A.M. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6050 N. Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN 46208. Donations can be made in her name to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation.
DELORES “DEE” BLACK
MARCH 19, 1928 – OCTOBER 14, 2009
Sheridan resident Delores “Dee” Black, 81, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan. Born March 19th, 1928 in Ortonville, Minnesota to Harold and Mabel Heinzen, Delores attended grade school there and in Bellingham, Minnesota where she was confirmed on May 17, 1942 at St. Peters Lutheran Church. She graduated high school in 1946 in Howard Lake, MN. In 1956 she wed Wally Black with whom she had two children. They later divorced. She moved to Buffalo, MN in 1969 where she eventually worked for Wright County Human Services for over 15 years, finally retiring in 1984. During this time she worked with mentally challenged youth and the Big Sisters organization. She was a member of the Lions Club and was voted “Lioness of the Year, 1981-1982” in Buffalo, MN. Delores also enjoyed bowling, crocheting and playing softball and bingo. After her retirement she moved to Sheridan and became active in the Red Hats and the Missionary Guild at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a founding member of the Kitchen Klatters Band. Dee is survived by daughter Cathy Black of Sheridan and son David Black of Cheyenne, WY. She is also survived by 3 brothers Ken Heinzen of Minnetonka, MN, Jerry Heinzen of Wayzata, MN, and Ray Heinzen of New Hope, MN and sister Barb Heinzen of Richfield, MN. She also leaves behind 2 grandchildren, Eric Dvorak and Jamie Smith and great-granddaughter Avery Smith. A celebration of life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Martin Luther Grammar School, 1300 West 5th Street, Sheridan WY 82801.

Martin E. Kaplan
Martin E. Kaplan, 56, of Sheridan died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Sheridan VA Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Ed Diller officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Dec. 31, 1952, in Miami to Milton and Margaret (McGee) Kaplan, he grew up and attended schools in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Nov. 6, 1973, and was honorably discharged March 26, 1975. He married
Jessica Ellis on Sept. 23, 2009, in Sheridan. Mr. Kaplan dedicated his life to helping and connecting veterans in Denver, Detroit, and Sheridan. He enjoyed horses, exotic gems, travel, and especially spending time with his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Dylan Rickman and Cyrus Johnson; one stepdaughter, Isobel Snow; and three stepbrothers, Roger, Joel, and Brian Hubbard. Marjorie Porter
Former Sheridan resident Marjorie Porter, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, in Thermopolis Rehabilitation Center. No services are planned. Private committal of cremains was in the family plot in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements were with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Aug. 22, 1915, in Sheridan to George and Mary (Stevie) Herron, she grew up here and was employed as a retail clerk for a time. She was disabled most of her life. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and a cousin.
Virgie ‘Leona’ Peters
Virgie “Leona” Peters, 88, sister of Wayne Roadifer of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, at Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center in Lewistown, Mont., of natural causes. A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Lewistown with a reception to follow in the downstairs fellowship hall. Cremation has taken place, and burial will be later at Choteau (Mont.) cemetery. Creel Funeral Home in Lewistown is in charge of arrangements. Born Oct. 1, 1921, to Raymond and Marjorie Roadifer at home 18 miles from Sundance, she was the oldest of 12 children. She spent many years owning or working on ranches and enjoyed cooking. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, a grandson, a stepson, five brothers, and a sister. In addition to her brother, she is survived by seven children and stepchildren; other siblings; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Ariel Kowalski Toth, 55, of Sheridan died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, at her home. Memorial mass is 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Born July 3, 1954, in Pittsburgh to Mary Virginia Russell and Emile Edward Kowalski, she enjoyed golf and spending time with her family. She was the ex-wife of Ignatius “Jay” Toth and the longtime companion of Jaybe Cates. Survivors include a daughter, Jayme Toth Dennis of Sheridan; three sons, Miles of Minneapolis and Grant and Max of Sheridan; four grandchildren; six siblings, Darras McCreight, Erin McKee, Mary Jean Rodgers, Blase Kowalski, Michael Kowalski and Dan Kowalski; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ida May “Tiny” Bartlett, 96, of Buffalo died Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at North Shore Hospice in Loveland, Colo. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Elsie M. Hein
Elsie M. Hein, 98, of Sheridan, passed away at her home October 9, 2009. Born in Loma, Colorado, to David F. and Linnie (Collins) Fields, the family moved to Sheridan where Elsie attended grade schools in the home ranch area and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1930. After graduating from high school, she lived with her parents at the Big Corrals Ranch in Clearmont, WY, where she assisted her family with the ranching duties and raised horses. She married
Dr. Clifford J. Hein on May 28, 1938 in Buffalo, WY and the couple moved to Sheridan where Dr. Hein established his optometric practice. Elsie was a housewife and continued to be involved in her parents’ ranching operations. After her husband’s death in 1956, Elsie returned to ranching as her full-time occupation, purchasing a ranch next to her parents on Prairie Dog Creek. She continued to work on ranches in that area until moving to town in 1985. She then worked as a ranch cook for Becton Stock Farm for several years. Her love of horses remained with her throughout her life. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Raymond Fields, sister Retha Cox and granddaughter Dershie Hein. Survivors include son William (Bill) Hein and his wife, Charlotte, son Clifford (Ed) Hein, and daughter Linda L. Ernst, all of Sheridan. Also surviving Elsie are grandchildren Deanna Parks, David Hein, Audrey Hein, Troy Hein, Ann Ernst, and Lisa Knox, as well as nine great grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and nieces Carmen Ouimet and Charlotte Hubing. Graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 13, 10:00 a.m. at the Masonic Circle #8, Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. John Kekich
John William Kekich, 73 of Sheridan Wyoming passed away on October 8, 2009 in Billings, MT following a long illness. John was born on March 6, 1936 in Sheridan, WY. He married
Sarah Brace in 1957 and had five children during there 23 years of marriage. He enjoyed caring for his beloved horses, fishing, hunting, leather crafting and spending time with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack in 2007. Survivors include four sons John, Thomas, William, Kameron a daughter, Patricia, eight grand children, one great grand child and long time companion Nancy Stroup. John is also survived by two sisters, Betty Turk, Eileen Holland and one brother, R.G. Kekich. A celebration of his life will be held at the private residence of Tom Kekich on Sunday October 11 located on 636 Sumner Street in Sheridan at noon.
Amanda JoLynn (Traub) Castaneda
Amanda JoLynn (Traub) Castaneda, 34, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of cancer, according to family. Visitation was Thursday at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus, Mont. Funeral services were this morning at the funeral home with burial in the family lot at Valley View cemetery in Broadus. Born April 18, 1975, in Miles City, Mont., to Lee and Bobby Traub, she lived in Belle Creek, Mont., through sixth grade, then Bay Horse and later Biddle, Mont. She graduated from Powder River County High School in 1993 and put herself through college, earning a degree in accounting. She married
Alfredo Castaneda in January 1998. They divorced. She enjoyed spending time with family, particularly holidays. Survivors include her parents of Sheridan; three children, Mariah Dael Traub, Adrian Javier Castaneda, and Isaiah Mathew Castaneda; a grandmother, Georgia Traub of Broadus; two brothers, Brendon Traub of Broadus and Dallas Traub of Watford City, N.D.; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
