Elsie Thayer

Elsie Thayer, 89, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. A memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Born Jan. 26, 1920, in Rock Springs to Anton and Mary Ann (Marcina) Romish, she attended school in Rock Springs and graduated in 1938. She spent two years at the University of Wyoming before teaching at the Ohlman School from 1940-1941. She wed Marshall Thayer on May 10, 1941, in Hardin, Mont. She also worked for the Rock Trim Hotel, School District 2, and the Senior Community Service Employment Program until her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three sons, Marshall, Gary and Kenny Thayer; a daughter, Linda Thayer; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Westview Health Care Center, 1990 W. Loucks St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

JOHN S. MCARTOR
FEBRUARY 22, 1928 - AUGUST 18, 2009

John Stanton McArtor died August 18, 2009 in Auburn, WA at the age of 81. He was born to John E. and Ruby (Stanton) McArtor on February 22, 1928 in Springfield, OH. He had been a resident of Bonney Lake, WA. John was a foster parent to many children. He was a truck driver, entrepreneur, EMT, Deputy Sheriff, and a missionary. He enjoyed sports, especially football and camping. John is survived by his sons, John F. McArtor (Teresa) of Bonney Lake, WA; Donald Wayne McArtor (Ana) of Vancouver, WA; Steven M. McArtor (Patricia) of Wesley Chapel, FL; his daughters, Pamela Ann Hall (Gary) of Sheridan, WY; Rebecca McArtor of NC; Jo Ann McArtor of Florence, SC; his sister, Kathryn Reddy of Deporter, MO; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sons, Robert Boyd McArtor; Edward Earl McArtor; James Douglas McArtor; William H. McArtor; and a daughter: Michelle McArtor. Arrangements by Weeks’ Funeral Home, Buckley, WA. Services are pending.

Kingston Sterling Brimmer

One-month-old Kingston Sterling Brimmer died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral service is 3 p.m. Wednesday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Huber officiating. Cremation will follow. He was born July 17, 2009, in Sheridan to Lyall Brimmer and Kelly Fowler. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Paulette Brimmer. Survivors include his mother and father; a brother, Chase Walker Fowler; and grandparents John and Janice Wyman, Mike Brimmer and Bobbie Lee.

David Mohns

David Mohns, 50, of Buffalo, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, in an automobile accident. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Monday and 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday with funeral service to follow at 10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside rites. Memorials may benefit the National Rifle Association c/o Adams Funeral Home.

Buckley Rhoads Jr.

Buckley Rhoads Jr., 55, of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in a motorcycle accident in the Big Horn Mountains. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home with family friend Brad Amelino officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Rhoads residence, 255 W. Ninth St. in Sheridan. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Dec. 22, 1953, in Sheridan to Buckley and Patricia (Amande) Rhoads, he was a lifelong resident of Wyoming and loved the mountains. He was educated in Saratoga and attended Casper College. He worked for 27 years in the coal mining industry. He married Juanita Roberts on Oct. 29, 1999. It was said he had a passion for riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle alongside his wife, was a “true tinkerer” and was devoted to his family. Survivors include his wife; father; sons Levi Rhoads and Joel Roberts; daughter Casey Rhoads and Amanda Flores; brothers Scott and Cody Rhoads; and sisters Kaye Rhoads, Cindy Schenemen, and Tracey Young; and three grandchildren.

Madge M. Herden

Madge M. Herden, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Billings Clinic in Billings. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Burial is in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born March 5, 1929, in Sheridan to Lawrence and Elizabeth (Roark) Shell, she grew up in this area and graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Allen Herden in 1953 in Sheridan. They divorced in 1965. She worked for Poll Motor and Valley Motor Implement before joining Decker Coal, from which she retired in 1990. A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she enjoyed gardening, fishing, and the mountains. Survivors include four sons, Jerry of Ranchester, David of Thompson Falls, Mont., Mark of Sheridan and Carl of Billings; three brothers, George, Benjamin and Lewis; one sister, Jeanette Zowada of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may benefit Holy Name Catholic Church.

Lawrence Clay ‘Larry’ Powers

Former Sheridan resident Lawrence Clay “Larry” Powers, 60, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at his home in Mills. Memorial services and burial of cremains were July 17 at Oregon Trail Veterans cemetery in Evansville. Arrangements were with Bustard's Funeral Home in Casper. Born Aug. 24, 1948, in Yreka, Calif., to Arliss and Joann (Mauro) Powers, he served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1969 with the U.S. Navy. He was decorated with the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Tet offensive. He married Patricia Meyer on Dec. 2, 1994, in Sheridan, where he worked for Normative Services Inc. They moved to Casper in 1998, where Mr. Powers was lead social worker for Youth Crisis Center. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and member of the Latter-day Saints Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; his father; a daughter, Mary Joanne Powers; two stepchildren, Christopher Dempsey and Gerry Patch; a brother, William; a sister, Debbie Schoepflin; and seven grandchildren. SUSAN K. ANDREWS
MARCH 14, 1958 - JULY 28, 2009

Susan K. Andrews, 51, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at her residence. Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held August 21, at 2 p.m. at the Elk's section, Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Reverend Doug Melius officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A reception for family and all friends will take place at 1392 Thomas Drive following the service. "Susie" was born March 14, 1958 in Sheridan, Wyoming to William and Shirley (Backer) Harper. She attended Woodland Park Elementary School from first through eighth grade. She graduated from Big Horn High School in 1976. She attended Billings Business College and Sheridan College. She married Ken Andrews August 15, 1981 at the family ranch at Banner, Wyoming. She was the third generation Harper bride married at the ranch. Her many interests included her love of animals and her many pets over the years, her computer, photography, crafts and her family. She leaves behind her sons, Jake Andrews and wife, Vickie (Schwartzkopf), grand children Haiden and Kynber, Jeff Andrews and (Jessie Masters), parents Bill and Shirley Harper (Backer), brother David Harper and wife Sarah, and several nieces and nephews, including Grace, foster nephew Sebastian, and foster niece Griffon., Uncle Bill Backer (Nancy) and several cousins, including the Nimick cousins. "Susie, go in peace and find your free spirit." Memorials may go to the Dog and Cat Shelter, at 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Bruce Lyman Bartholomew

Bruce Lyman Bartholomew, 84, of Dayton died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, in the Sheridan VA Nursing Home Care Unit. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dayton Community Church with the Rev. Dennis Goodin officiating. Interment will be in Dayton cemetery. Born April 5, 1925, in Chippewa Falls, Wis., to Wilbur and Florence (Luce) Bartholomew, he attended schools in Beloit, Wis. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, was captured during the Battle of the Bulge in Europe, and remained a prisoner until the war ended. He married Eleanor Kravick on Aug. 7, 1948, in Beloit, then moved in 1953 from Wisconsin to Dayton, where the couple owned and operated a grocery store. Mr. Bartholomew served as Dayton's postmaster from 1957 until retiring in 1991. He was a resident at Sheridan VA Medical Center since 2005. He was an active member of Dayton Community Church, where he served as “greeter.” His favorite hobby was bowling. He was preceded in death by a brother, David Bartholomew. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Teri Laya and Barbara Yardas, both of Ranchester; four granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. Memorials may benefit Dayton Community Church Building Fund, c/o Teri Laya, Box 6, Ranchester, WY 82839. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Domitilia (Tillie) Madrigal Mesa
December 1, 1918 - August 7, 2009

Domitilia (Tillie) Mesa, former Sheridan resident, passed away on August 7, 2009 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was proceeded in death by a son, Arthur Joseph Mesa, a great-granddaughter, Jade Mesa, and a sister, Victoria Macias. Tillie lived with her parents who farmed land on what was once called _the home ranch_. This land was West of the present Wyoming Girls School campus. She returned to the Sheridan area in 1970 and resided here for several years before joining family members in Massachusetts. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Andler, (Florida). Four sons; Ralph (Riverton, WY) Rudy and Robert (Kansas City, MO) and William (Sheridan, WY). A brother, Alfred Madrigal, (California) and a sister, Rachael Sanchez, (Texas). A brother in-law, Alfonso Mesa, (Douglas, WY). Twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. The family would like to encourage contributions to local hospice services.

Harriet Hazel McManus

Harriet Hazel McManus, 93, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Nov. 22, 1915, in Sheridan to Harold and Hazel (Morris) Brunsell, she married Mark McManus here in April 1937. Together for 57 years, the couple raised three children and operated their own businesses. In retirement, they lived in Sheridan and Arizona. Mrs. McManus was a homemaker who enjoyed knitting, travel and spending time with her grandchildren. She also was an active member of the Junior Women’s Club, Akcita Win, Daughters of the Nile, and St. Peter’s Episcopal church. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Linda McManus Alden; and a grandson. Survivors include a son, Jim McManus of Shell; a daughter, Norma McManus Dean of Brighton, Colo.; a sister, Joan Wesley of Sandy, Utah; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Shrine Children’s Fund, P.O. Box K, Sheridan, WY 82801 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Helen Voiles

Helen Voiles, 90, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Memorials may benefit the Amie Holt Care Center activities fund in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Bill Velos

Bill Velos, 95, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, in Westview Health Care Center. No services are planned. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Velos was born May 23, 1914, in Wallowa, Ore., to Henry and Rissie (Clemens) Liles. When he was 5 years old, his father was killed in a logging accident and he was adopted by Pete Velos. He grew up and attended school in Portola, Calif., before logging for his grandfather. He worked for the railroad and supplied ice for an fish company in northern California. In 1937 Mr. Velos came to Sheridan and worked for numerous ranches in the area. He married Eileen Casey on April 14, 1951. She died July 29, 1981. He operated a boiler plant for the U.S. Navy in Hawthorne, Nev., from 1959 until 1973, when he retired due to ill health. He returned to Sheridan. He was a member of the Catholic Church, American Legion, and Eagles Aerie 186 in Sheridan. He enjoyed working on diesel engines, fishing, playing cribbage, watching Braves baseball, and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Pete. Survivors include three sons, William and Pat Velos of Sheridan and Gary “Corkey” Velos of Ranchester; one daughter, Donna Bumgartner, of Sheridan; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Ernest ‘Ted’ Shireman

Former Story and Sheridan resident Ernest “Ted” Shireman, 87, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, in Arlington, Texas. Born March 1, 1922, in Miles City, Mont., to Ernest and Mable (Wilson) Shireman, he grew up in Story and Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940. He was a flight instructor for the Navy from 1942 to 1946 and a Marine Corps pilot from 1953 to 1955. He made his career as a pilot. He enjoyed hunting, camping and trail riding with his son on his East Texas property. He and his wife enjoyed extensive travel after retirement. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Butler of Sheridan. Survivors include his wife, Ernestine “Ernie” Shireman; a son, Ron Shireman of The Colony, Texas; two daughters, Linda Shireman of Irving, Texas, and Judy Hayes of Arlington; and two grandsons.

RUTH EILENE SNIVELY WELLER
SEPTEMBER 23, 1916 - AUGUST 9, 2009

An earthly angel has made her way to heaven. Ruth Eilene Snively Weller passed away on August 9, 2009, at age 92 in the Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne, WY. Ruth was born September 23, 1916, in Deering, N. Dakota to Benjamin F. and Bertha F. Snively, the third of four daughters. She was raised in Canada during her early childhood. After the family returned to the USA, she graduated from high school in Stockport, Iowa. Ruth married Harold “Hi” Weller in 1934 with the wedding taking place at her parent’s home in Stockport. After some travels to various work locations, they made their permanent home in Sheridan, Wyoming. Ruth is survived by her daughters Rachael Stewart of Klamath Falls, Oregon and Rowena (Jim) Ludwig of Carpenter, WY. Ruth is grandmother to Rebecca Jewell of Torrington, WY, Rhonda Wilken of Sheridan and B. Timothy Connolly & wife Kerstin of Gillette, WY. Ruth is great grandmother to Katie (Cash) Isbell of Torrington, Kodie (Clint) Olsen of Baker, MT and Alicia and Trevor Connolly of Gillette. Ruth is also great great grandmother to Kash, Kaenee and Kalelyn Isbell and Kane and Cord Olsen. In addition, Ruth is survived by her sister Bette Klindt of
Davenport, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her
parents and sisters Wanda McKeever and Nina Schneider. Ruth was a caring person to family and friends who loved her very much and she will be missed by all of us. Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Wednesday (Aug 12 th ) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home, Sheridan, WY, with the Reverend Bob Miller officiating. The pallbearers are Clint Olsen, Cash Isbell, Tim Connolly, Jim Ludwig, Rex Lofts and Bob Bradley. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Elks Section. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit the Donor’s choice or Davis Hospice Center, 6000 Sycamore, Cheyenne, WY 82009.

Douglas M. Ramsey

Douglas M. Ramsey, 41, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, in his home. Graveside service is 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born June 15, 1968, in Zanesville, Ohio, he grew up in Southern California. He graduated from the Commonwealth Institute of Mortuary Science in Houston. Mr. Ramsey worked as a funeral director in numerous funeral homes, most recently Kane Funeral Home for 10 years.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his pets and son. He was preceded in death by his father, Les Fitch. Survivors include a son, Richard Ramsey of Sheridan; his mother, Barbara Ramsey of Billings; and a brother, David Ramsey of San Francisco.

Fred Hesse

Fred Hesse, 87, of Buffalo died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Johnson County Healthcare Center. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home with services to follow at 10 a.m., the Rev. Russ Murphy officiating. Anchor Lodge 7 AF and AM will present a Masonic Committal Service with burial in Willow Grove cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion are in charge of military graveside rites. Memorials may benefit St. Luke’s Episcopal Altar Guild, Mountain Plains Heritage Park, or the Gatchell Museum Association.

Seth E. Gwinn

Former Sheridan resident Seth E. Gwinn, 63, of Fremont, Neb., died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Golden Living Valhaven Nursing Home in Valley, Neb. Memorial services are 7 p.m. Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. A reception will follow at Platte Valley Church of Christ in Fremont. Born April 25, 1946, in Seattle, he grew up in Sheridan, the son of adoptive parents Gerald and Jean Gwinn. He was a 1964 graduate of Sheridan High School. He moved to Madison, Wis., in 1964, attending college for one year. He moved to the Fremont and Omaha, Neb., area in 1974. He was employed at Boys Town in the planned giving department for 25 years, retiring in 2005. He married Janice L. Inmon on Aug. 2, 1985, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Cassie and Kylee of Fremont; his stepmother, Mary S. (Tripalin) Gwinn of Salt Lake City; and two brothers, Geoff and Joe Tripalin, both of Madison..
