Memorial services for Venida P. Fritz, 85, of Sheridan are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with a reception to follow at the church parish hall. Mrs. Fritz died Jan. 11 in her home. Her obituary was published in the Jan. 16 Sheridan Press.
Ephraim Moore
Ephraim Moore, 80, of Buffalo died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services are 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Buffalo with Pastor John Orwig officiating. James Vernon States
Well known area rancher, J. Vernon States, 95, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009. Vernon was born in Logan, KS, on January 26, 1914, to Perry and Maud (Lappin) States, and moved to Sheridan in 1934. He married
Oriel A. Lupton on March 14, 1935, in Sheridan. During his long life he worked many jobs, including sheep herder, cow puncher, coal miner, M.D.U. Employee in both Sheridan and Buffalo, and for the Bureau of Reclamation in Oregon on a W.P. A. project. He is best remembered by his family and many devoted friends as a rancher. He was fortunate to be doing what he loved, working at the ranch on Dutch Creek, just a few days before he died. Vernon was a member of various local organizations including the Elks and Masonic Lodge, as well as recently volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels. In earlier years he was very active in Farm Bureau, holding offices at both the county and state level. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Vernon was preceded in death in 2004 by his bride of 69 years, Oriel, his parents and siblings Lynn, Melvin and Mildred. He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Dean of Sheridan and Duane of Sandy, Utah, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to either the Sheridan County Historical Society and Museum at PO Box 73, Sheridan, WY; or the Sheridan Senior Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY. Visitation will be Monday, August 31, 7-9 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, at Kane Funeral Home.
J. Vernon States
J. Vernon States, 95, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation is 7-9 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Big Horn Masonic Lodge 43 Past Master Al Badgett officiating. Interment will follow at the Big Horn Masonic Lodge 43 Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Thomas Olen White
Thomas Olen White passed away in Billings on August 27, 2009. He was born July 6, 1939 to Edward and Lucille Kendrick White. His parents and his grandparents Tom and EsteLee Kendrick raised him at the Forks and The K ranch. Tommy’s love of driving started early by driving his Grandfather around at the age of 5 and then reportedly driving a snow plow for Big Horn County, MT at the age of 7. He attended Pine Butte, a one-room school, in grades 1 through 8. He then attended Sheridan High School and graduated from there. During high school, he drove for Whitham Trucking. In 1958 he married
Nancy Masters. Manville Kendrick gave them a wedding gift of $ 5000.00. Tommy used that for a down payment on his first Mack truck. He leased to Bell and Mooney out of Gillette. In 1959, he moved back to Sheridan, where their son Kenny was born. In 1960, Eddie, Lucille and Tommy bought out Pat Whitham and started White Trucking. In 1965 Tom married
Jean French; a son was born to them, Eddie. In 1968 for a short time he was married
to Billie Sweet. In 1972, he met Melba Wilson, they united in marriage in 1974 and a larger family unit was formed with Greg, Michelle, Nita and Tina. In 1976 Sonny Holmes bought out Eddie and Lucille and formed White Transport and 10-4 Diesel. In 1994 Tom left White transport, began White Trucking, and had leased to Bruce Herden, East West Motor Express and Diversified Transport and Storage.In 2001 he sold his last truck to Eddie and continued to drive for him until Sept. 2007, where he finished fall run and decided to retire. Tom was blessed with a very special companion, Merle Stevens who had remained his faithful sidekick since April of 2009. They enjoyed each others sense of humor and company very deeply. His parents, Edward and Lucille Kendrick White, preceded Tommy in death. He is survived by his son Kenny (Sue) White of Columbus, their children Alynne (Jason) Rhodes, and their two daughters, Todd (Devan) Keller, and their daughter, along with Thomas and Nancy White; Son Greg (Debbie) Pfau of Sheridan, their children, Summer (Jim), Charlie (Andrew) and daughter and son, and Sarah Pfau; daughter Michelle (Chad) Lemmon, of Cody, WY, their children Alex (Chris) Knudtson, and her daughter, Tim (Sara) Knudtson, and Chace; son Eddie, (D. Peterson) of Billings, and his son Hayden Hamilton, daughter, Nita Stewart of Billings, and her children, Cody Stewart, his son, Kelsey (Anna) Tetschner, and their son, and Katelin Stewart; and daughter, Tina (Tom) Cubbage of Great Falls, and their children Hannah and Jacob; and cousins, John Taylor, Lampasas, TX, Pat Applegate, Long Beach, CA and Pam Winterholler of Sheridan. The true love of Tommy’s life was spending time with his family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. He loved listening to stories as well as telling them. He will be forever missed. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Jeff Johnson, Rolo, Marla and the rest of the staff at St. Vincent’s for their great care. Memorial services will be Monday, in Sheridan, WY at Champion Ferries Funeral Home at 11 am with a reception following at the Elks Club. LeRoy Jack Offerle
Former Sheridan resident LeRoy Jack Offerle, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in Erie, Colo. Services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 1201 S. Boulder Road, Lafayette, Colo. Interment will be in Meeker (Colo.) cemetery. Born July 6, 1937, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Vern V. and Hermine R. Stadtman Offerle, he attended schools in Grand Junction and Mesa College. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1961 with a degree in psychology. Mr. Offerle served in the Army Security Agency from 1961-1964. He married
Bonnie Fought on Nov. 23, 1961. They were divorced in 2001. He worked for the state of Colorado and later the Wyoming Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in Sheridan, retiring in 1996. Survivors include one daughter, Yvette R. Offerle Cunningham; two brothers, Herb and Ted Offerle; a sister, Linda Offerle Geiger; two grandsons; and nine nieces and nephews.
Wally Ballhorn
Former Sheridan resident Wally Ballhorn, 86, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in Mesa, Ariz. Memorial services are Saturday at Mariposa Gardens in Mesa. Born May 5, 1923, in Lake Park, Iowa, to Albert and Lillie (Golinghorst) Ballhorn, he married
LaVonne Baumeister on Oct. 2, 1946. Mr. Ballhorn served in the Air Force during World War II and had a long career in agriculture as a farmer and commission firm owner in Sioux City, Iowa. He also owned the sale barn in Sheridan for a time and was a feeder cattle buyer, retiring in 1990. He was preceded in death by a sister, Floreine Helgerson. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William and Dennis; and five grandchildren. Memorials may benefit United Foodbank, 358 E Javelina Ave., Mesa, AZ 85210.
Marvel ‘Marv’ C. Sillyman
Marvel “Marv” C. Sillyman, 68, of Story died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Born June 29, 1941, in Boise, Idaho, to William C. Sillyman and Lois Adams, he graduated from Midwest High School in 1959 and attended Casper College before joining the Navy. He retired from Conoco Pipeline Co. and moved with his wife, Judy, to Story. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Buffalo; a sister, Jane Ann Gosney of Kaycee; a daughter, Lani Moe; five grandchildren; and a nephew and niece.
ROBERT FREDERICK ERNST

Robert Frederick Ernst, 79, of Sheridan, passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan on August 26, 2009. Born in Sheridan on July 24, 1930, to Ernest and Zelda (Hawkins) Ernst, Bob attended Holy Name School and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1948. As a youth, he was active in both 4-H and FFA. After completing two years at Colorado State College, he graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Animal Husbandry. Bob formed life-long Irish friendships when he was sponsored for an International Farm Youth Exchange Program in Ireland in 1952. Following that, Bob then served with a US Army tour of duty in Korea. Returning to Sheridan, he engaged in ranching and the chicken hatchery business before opening A to Z Rental in 1964. Bob and his wife, Linda, later changed the business name to Rent-it Center and continued operations until selling the business in 2001. Retirement brought a return trip to Ireland for Bob and Linda to renew friendships there. Other highlights have included daily “show-and-tell business meetings” with his two coffee groups, assisting the Women of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with their projects, and working in his yard. Bob served as a board member of the Genesis Foundation, First National Bank, and Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 520 and enjoyed volunteering in 4-H programs when his girls were young. He was preceded in death by his parents. Immediate survivors include wife Linda Hein Ernst, daughters Ann Ernst of Casper, WY, and Lisa (Alex) Knox of Chandler, AZ, grandchildren Nicole and Thompson Knox, and sister Audrey (David) Downes of Chico, CA. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Reverend Kevin Jones officiating. Cremation has been held for Mrs. Oma Jean (Creek) Chapman. Mrs. Chapman, 75, died August 22, 2009, at Central Wyoming Hospice Casper. She was born in Midwest, October 16, 1933, the daughter of Harold and Rubye (Walker) Creek. She is survived by her husband Bill and four sons, Curt and Angela of Bar Nunn, Marc of Midwest, Guy and Paula of Midwest, and Brad and Sandy of Sheridan; 9 grandchildren, Tricia Harrison of Billings, Chad Chapman of Laurel, MT, Shawna, Will, and Hannah Chapman of Midwest, Hayley and Ashley Chapman of Bar Nunn, Billie and Jessie Chapman of Sheridan, 5 great-grandchildren, brother Bill Creek of Oklahoma, and sister Lenora Creek) Redman of Story. Lillian M. Keahey
Lillian M. Keahey, 81, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside service is 2 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Scott Lee officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Nov. 3, 1927, in Sheridan to Jesse and Anna (Hoffman) Ekis, she grew up and graduated from high school here and also graduated from Heiman’s Business College. She married
Bruce E. Keahey on June 26, 1949. They lived in Sheridan, where she was credit manager of Montgomery Ward until her retirement. After retirement, she joined her husband and son at Bruce's Standard until 1995. Mrs. Keahey enjoyed fishing in the mountains, embroidering and cooking. She was a member of McCormick Homemakers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers. Survivors include a son, Bruce of Sheridan; a daughter, Cheryle Haworth of Fort Collins, Colo.; a brother, Bernard Ekis of Sheridan; a sister, Nancy Favero of Sheridan; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Helen A. Patterson, 86, of Billings, mother of Verleen Parker of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Aspen Meadows Nursing Home in Billings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cremation and Funeral Gallery in Billings. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery in Roundup, Mont., following a reception at the funeral home. Mrs. Patterson was born Aug. 8, 1923, to Anton and Carolina (Medic) Schumak in Roundup. Vern R. Patterson on June 18, 1938, in Roundup. The family moved to Billings in the mid-1940s. She was preceded in death by her husband; a half brother, Eli Marchich; and a son, Fred Patterson. In addition to her daughter, survivors include six children, Norman and Mark of Billings, Warren and Douglas of Butte, Mont., Barbara Parker of Moapa, Nev., and Linda Brown of La Mesa, Calif.; a half sister, Ann Schutrop of Billings; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. MaryEtta “Redwood” Wood, age 66, sister of Florence Flack and Sonny Burfiend of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at her home in Gillette. Memorial service is 3 p.m. Saturday at Gillette Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve Carnahan of the Abundant Life Church officiating. A reception will follow at the Moose Lodge. Private burial will be Sunday in Sheridan Elks cemetery. She was born Jan. 11, 1943, in Valentine, Neb., to Walter and Arbra Burfiend. She married
Ron Wood on Dec. 21, 1962, and they started a Wood Trucking business in Upton. They moved the company to Gillette in 1973 and continued to operate the business together. Mr. Wood died in 2002, and Mrs. Wood continued to work in the business. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, camping, boating, auctions and shopping. She was a member of Gillette Moose Lodge. In addition to her brother and sister, survivors include two daughters, Patricia R. Murphey of Gillette and Tracy A. Mengel of Virginia; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Boots Wiley of Gillette and Corene Ilsley of Borrego Springs, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley Jean Groshart, 81, of Sheridan passed away August 26, 2009 at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan. Shirley Jean Groshart was born June 9, 1928 in Paducah, Kentucky to Kenneth and Ruth Ryan. She was educated in Chicago, Illinois where she met Ralph Lloyd Groshart. They were married
September 24, 1947 after his graduation from Northern Illinois College of Optometry. They moved to Sheridan in 1949. They have three sons, Mark (Debra), Matthew (Jan), and Michael (Diana) Groshart, and a daughter, Musette (Dennis) Poll. Dr. Groshart died on April 11, 1991. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, PEO, Eastern Star #2, Daughters of the Nile, and the Sheridan Country Club. Shirley enjoyed reading, playing cards and Scrabble, cooking, her roses, and her family. Survivors include her four children and eight grandchildren, Jay Groshart, Amber Groshart-Gaona, Angela Poll-Hulbert and Abbie Poll-Johnson, Stephen, Graham, Nick and Maggie Groshart, great-granddaughters Alivia, and Aliya, brother Ron Robinson, and two nephews, Dan and Tom Robinson. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Kane Funeral Home in Sheridan, with the Reverend Kevin Jones officiating. Wilma Smith, 83, of Sheridan died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Sheridan Manor. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. John Elkins officiating. Leonard M. Smith in Sheridan and worked as a bookkeeper at NZ Shoes for 30 years. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, visiting the mountains, and crocheting, and she was an avid dart player. She was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, and BPO Does . Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Helen Buyok; and a brother, Wayne Pratt. William L. ‘Jonesy’ Jones
William L. "Jonesy" Jones, 70, of Sheridan died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at his residence. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Sept. 9, 1938, in Sheridan to Clarence and Susie (Smith) Jones, he attended schools in Sheridan and worked at Title Abstract. His favorite pastimes were cowboying, snowmobiling, and riding with the Shrine Horse Patrol. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, and Jesters. His longtime companion was Marna Owens.
