William J. ‘Bill’ Preston

Sheridan native William J. “Bill” Preston, 78, brother of Lois Trujillo of Sheridan, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. Private services are planned. Arrangements are with Schrader Funeral Home in Cheyenne. Born April 22, 1931, in Sheridan to Pete and Julia Preston, he served from Aug. 9, 1950, to Nov. 28, 1952, during the Korean War. He retired from the Army National Guard communications division. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Preston; and two brothers, Donald Preston and Bobby Preston. Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Reed of Cheyenne and Tami Ryan of Tempe, Ariz.; a brother, Pete “Wahoo” Preston of Virginia; a second sister, Virginia Herrick of Washington; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Cheyenne Animal Shelter, 800 Southwest Drive, Cheyenne, WY 82007.

Mildred Irene Barber

Mildred Irene Barber, 85, of Buffalo died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Johnson County Healthcare Center in Buffalo. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. Wednesday and 9-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Connie Cranston officiating. Graveside services and burial are 10 a.m. July 20 at Braceville Gardner cemetery in Braceville, Ill. Memorials may benefit Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice or Buffalo Senior Center in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Rose Marie Lutz

Rose Marie Lutz, 90, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Sheridan Manor of complications from pancreatic cancer, according to family. Private graveside services have taken place. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Born May 15, 1919, in Sheridan to Pete and Michelena (Deluzio) Troche, she married Jim Lutz of Ranchester on May 4, 1941. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting arrowheads, antiques, and coins. They spent most weekends in the Big Horn Mountains. She had no children of her own but was known as a generous aunt to all her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed preparing fried chicken and potato salad for weekend picnics at Kendrick Park and would appear with baskets on Easter and presents on Christmas. She took care of her own mother for many years. She loved Sheridan and lived at Sugarland Ridge Retirement Home in addition to Sheridan Manor. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Joe; and a sister, Helen.

Orville A. Wobig

Orville A. Wobig, 81, of Sheridan died here Wednesday, July 8, 2009. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bullis Funeral Chapel, Hardin, Mont. Interment will follow in Lodge Grass (Mont.) cemetery. Born April 19, 1928, in Cody, Neb., to Albert and Alma Jackson Wobig, he grew up and attended school in Nebraska. Following his education, he worked on various ranches in Nebraska. He married Loraine Overman. The couple lived in the Casper area, where he worked for an oil company. They divorced. He moved to Sheridan, where he married Jeanette Stevens on April 15, 1964. They ranched in the Reno Creek and Hardin areas. An avid horseman who trained cutting and team-roping horses, he also enjoyed attending and participating in rodeos. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Debra. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Fuller of Moorcroft and Mary Schneider of Nebraska; a sister, Jeannine Brown of Kansas; a brother, Ken Wobig of Dayton; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Micheal Semler

Micheal D. Semler, 75, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 11, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born July 25, 1933, in Oxford, Colo., to Gus and Martha (Miller) Semler, he grew up and attended schools in Ignacios, Colo. He tended sheep for the Colorado Stockmen’s Association before moving to Wyoming, where he worked for the Bear Claw Ranch. He married Marie Zingg on Feb. 7, 1955, in Sheridan. He worked on several drilling rigs and for Sheridan Iron Works. The couple moved to Durango, Colo., where he worked in the oil fields for five years until returning to Sheridan to manage Coffeen Texaco in 1967. He managed the station for 30 years. He enjoyed stock car racing and drove car No. 39 for five years. After retirement, he worked several jobs including part time for the Country Bounty. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snow machining, yard work and helping his kids with their cars. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, in 1959 and three brothers. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim of Gillette; two daughters, Gail Trask and Jody Vance, both of Custer, S.D.; a sister, Betty Bishop of Cimarron, Kan.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Memorials may benefit Elks Lodge Building Fund, Box 624, Sheridan, WY 82801, or Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan.

Ethel Russell

Ethel Russell, 76, of Sheridan died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in Gillette, after a long illness. A memorial service is 4 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home followed by a carry-in dinner at Eagles Lodge 4159, 1760 Commercial Ave., in Sheridan. Attendees are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share. Born Oct. 9, 1932, in Buffalo, she spent her childhood in Buffalo and most of her adult life in Sheridan. She enjoyed gardening, dolls, birds, teapots and African violets. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; a brother, John; and two sisters, Judy and Evie. Survivors include one sister, Katy McNeil; one brother, Jerry Pryor; four sons, Billy Suranyi, Les Russell, John Finley, and Dean Russell; five daughters, Pam Yates, Janet Scharen, DeeDee McCoy, Lisa Flinders and Cheryl Good; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy “Bit” Alderson Tarter

Dorothy “Bit” Alderson Tarter passed away Tuesday, July 7th, in Sheridan, WY. Bit was born August 21st, 1928 to Allen and Dorothy (Bentley) Alderson. She grew up at Bones Brothers Ranch in Birney, MT and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945. Bit attended college at the University of Montana in Missoula before marrying Daniel “Buzz” Tarter of Ashland, MT in 1954. They made their home on their cattle ranch located on 3 Mile Creek, outside of Ashland, MT. She worked as an active ranch wife raising three children in a log house with no in-door plumbing or electricity. Bit enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader, and played a competitive game of Scrabble up until the time of her death. Bit was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and youngest sister, Ann Alderson Brown, of Lewistown, MT. She is survived by her sister, Alice A. MacCarty, of Story, WY, sons Allen (& Jackie) Tarter and Bryan (& Shannon) Tarter of Ashland, MT, and daughter, Sue Tarter of Sheridan, WY. Plans for a small celebration of her life will be announced by the family at a later date. As her wish, cremation arrangements are being made by Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Mile City, MT

Clifford E. Swinyer

Clifford E. Swinyer, 67, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Sheridan Manor. Viewing is 3-6 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church with Pastor Steve Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born Dec. 16, 1941, in Sheridan to Ernest and Lois Swinyer, he attended Sheridan schools and married Marie Stiles here on May 13, 1960. Mr. Swinyer was employed with Russell York Construction for more than 16 years before going to work for Spring Creek Coal for more than 22 years. He enjoyed hunting, camping, four-wheeling, fishing, “tinkering, ” and spending time with his family. He took pride in helping others with tasks such as snow removal and mowing yards. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly McElles and Myrna Ingersoll. Survivors include his wife; two siblings, Pamela Wegner and Ronald Swinyer of Sheridan; four children, Jennifer Swinyer, Clifford Swinyer and Melissa Tate of Sheridan and Lauri Stranger of O’Fallon, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

C.W. ‘Bill’ Babcock

C.W. “Bill” Babcock, 76, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at his residence. A celebration of his life is 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Born April 1, 1933, in Sheridan to Charles Leslie and Grace (Snell) Babcock, he attended Sheridan schools and graduated from Sheridan High School. He attended Sheridan Community College and served in the U.S. Navy for two years. On return from the service he joined Ed Hammer Inc., where he became sales manager during his 42 years of employment. He enjoyed restoring a 1959 Corvette and during retirement built a cabin in the Big Horn Mountains, where he spent his free time. He was active in veterans’ affairs. During the past 11 years, he served as president and vice president of the Marna M. Kuehne Foundation. He was a member of American Legion, Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, and the cabin owners association. He was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include two daughters, Kim Philipps of Boise, Idaho, and Pam Sajec of Bozeman, Mont.; one sister, Khariman Creswell of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Elenita Prunty

Elenita Prunty, 90, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born May 12, 1919 in Clay County, Iowa to Fred Edwin and Wella Blanche (White) Anderson. Her family moved from Iowa to Jaroso, CO when she was two years of age. Elenita attended grade school in Jaroso and graduated from high school at Campion Academy in Loveland, CO in 1937. She attended Union College in Lincoln, NE. Elenita earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Primary Education from Adams State College in Alamosa, CO in 1952 and her Masters of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Adams State College in 1966. She began teaching school in 1950, and in 1964 began a career in the Alamosa School System, teaching 2nd and 3rd grade students until her retirement in 1985. Elenita married George W. Prunty in Jaroso on July 26, 1942. Her hobbies/interests include touring here and abroad, fall leaves, gardening, yard work, sewing, needlepoint, church activities, teaching Sabbath School, church records, walking, continuing her education, crossword puzzles, and playing games. Elenita was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Alamosa and a member of the National Teacher’s Association. Elenita is survived by her son, Fred C. (Sandy) Prunty of Sheridan, WY; her daughter, Evelyn B. (Duane) Smith of Newmarket, NH; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son, her parents, her sister, her brother, and one granddaughter. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 31, 2009 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 313 Craft Drive, Alamosa, CO. Kane Funeral Home of Sheridan, WY, handled local arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Elenita’s name to the Alamosa SDA Church School, 313 Craft Drive, Alamosa, CO 81101.

Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Helene A. Waddell

Helene A. Waddell, 95, of Sheridan died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial graveside service is 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Oblong Square Masonic No. 8 section of the Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Sept. 24, 1913, in Linwood, Neb., to Robert and Mary (Bobek) Franklin, she grew up in Linwood and graduated from Linwood High School. In 1934 she came to Sheridan, where she received nurse’s training. She married John “Fritz” Waddell in Billings on Feb. 8, 1935. The couple resided in Sheridan. Mrs. Waddell worked at Bentley's Clothing Store for 25 years and was a meals program volunteer at Heritage Towers. She was a member of Naomi Chapter 2 Order of Eastern Star, Social Order of Beauceant, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Mr. Waddell died in 1979. Mrs. Waddell is survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Shrine Hospital for Children, P.O. Box K, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Hubert Oscar Minick Jr.

Former Sheridan dentist Hubert Oscar Minick Jr., 86, died Monday, June 29, 2009, in Los Angeles. Services are today at Canoga Park Presbyterian Church in Canoga Park, Calif. Born Dec. 10, 1922, to Sarah and Hubert Minick Sr. in Upton, he grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from Sheridan High School. He was a graduate of the University of Wyoming and Northwestern University Dental School. A dentist in Sheridan for five years, he left private practice to become chief of Central Dental Laboratories at the VA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and flew 30 missions in a B-17 bomber in World War II. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Jean (Minick) Morganwick, a twin brother, Elliot, and another brother, James. Survivors include his wife, Patricia (MacLeod) Minick of Los Angeles; three children, Jeanne (Minick) Kaufman of Pennsylvania, Marilyn (Minick) Angelo of Los Angeles, and Bill Minick of Los Angeles; one brother, Dr. Richard Minick of New York City; and eight grandchildren.

James L. Robinson

James L. Robinson, 52, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Monday at Sheridan VA Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Arden Haeffner officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born May 20, 1957, in Pueblo, Colo., to Dick and Norma Robinson, he moved with his family to Sheridan. He attended Sheridan schools, then the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. He worked as a Sheridan County sheriff’s deputy, then as a police officer with Sheridan VAMC and was an information security officer at the time of his death. He married Christie Haworth in Sheridan on June 28, 1982. He enjoyed flying and as a teenager obtained a pilot’s license. He later built and flew remote-control planes. He also enjoyed technology, computers and electronics, his dogs, auctions, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping, especially in the Big Horn Mountains. He was a past member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Susan Robinson. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Sheridan; and a son, James C. Robinson, of Boulder, Colo. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

DOROTHY W. BARTHOLME
JUNE 29, 1923 - JUNE 25, 2009

Dorothy W. Bartholme, 85, of Sheridan, passed away on June 25, 2009 at Westview Health Care Center. Dorothy was born on June 29, 1923 in Willard, New Mexico to George and Beulah Worley. She was Valedictorian of her senior graduating class of Central Baptist School in Clovis, NM. After high school she worked as a police dispatcher. On March 22, 1947 she wed John Bartholme in Clovis, NM and were blessed with three children. Shortly after their marriage she and John moved to Steamboat Springs, CO, where Dorothy_s _claim to fame_ was driving an 18-wheeler over Rabbit Ears Pass. They eventually made their home in Commerce City, CO where they both worked full time and raised their family. They were founders of the Metropolitan Troupers, a group of young people with an array of talents that brought variety entertainment shows into hospitals, nursing homes, military bases, missions and shelters, and anywhere else their presence was requested, throughout the Denver Metro area. After John passed away on April 19, 1990, Dorothy eventually relocated to Douglas, WY to be near family, and lived there for eight years. In September 2008 she moved to Westview Health Care Center following her family_s move to the Sheridan area, where she resided until the time of her death. She enjoyed watching pro- football, especially the Denver Broncos. Dorothy also enjoyed trips with her family to Blackhawk and Central City, CO to play the nickel slot machines. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed going shopping and out to lunch with her family and friends and playing cards and dominoes with them. Dorothy never met a stranger, and she will always be remembered for her kind heart, loving ways, cheerful disposition, and positive outlook. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn J. Bartholme of WY, Janice D. Sullivan of CO, and Lynda Green, and her husband, Jeff, of WY; her four grandchildren, Kara Sullivan of UT, Christopher and Andrea Sullivan, both of CO, and Caleb Green of WY; her great-grandchild, Haylee L. Sullivan of CO; her sister, Lawanda Frakes, and her husband Charles, of Clovis, NM; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. A celebration of life for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009 from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Douglas Community Club, 64 Golf Course Rd., Douglas, WY. Interment will be at Dellview cemetery in Manville, WY at a later date in a private family service. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Contributions may be made in Dorothy_s memory to UNITY, 1901 NW Blue Parkway, Unity Village, MO 64065-0001.

Thomas Norbert Anderson

Thomas Norbert Anderson, 50, of Sheridan died Thursday, June 18, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Feb. 28, 1959, in Antigo, Wis., to Norbert and Mary (Zuehlke) Anderson, he grew up in Antigo and graduated from Antigo High School. Mr. Anderson was a driver for United Parcel Service in Sheridan for the past 16 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking in the mountains. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother. Survivors include one son, Austin Anderson of Sheridan; three brothers, Robert Anderson of Mattoom, Wis., Andrew Anderson of Billings, and Eric Anderson of Ranchester; and three sisters, Sue Krueger of Rhinelander, Wis., Jo Hoeft of Little Falls, Minn., and Merry Lee Bishop of Banner.
