Roger Stevens Bent

Roger Stevens Bent, 81, of Sheridan died Friday, July 24, 2009, in Billings Clinic. Viewing will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born March 20, 1928, in Sheridan to Roger and Berenice (Stevens) Bent, he grew up in Story and graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in accounting in 1951. He married Thelma Oliver on June 13, 1950, in Fort Collins, Colo. They moved to Sheridan in 1951, where he worked as a bookkeeper for Stevens Fryberger, Sheridan Flour Mill, Mid-Continent Oil and Harker Mellinger Accountants until he retired. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Story Library Board and a past master of Masonic Lodge No. 43. He loved his family and cat Farby and enjoyed tending his garden in Story, fishing and having coffee with friends. Mr. Bent was preceded in death by his wife; and a sister, Barbara Walters. Survivors include a son, Roger M. Bent of Sheridan; two daughters, Carol Doughty and Mary Carroll, both of Sheridan; and one granddaughter. Memorials may benefit Story Branch Library, P.O. MARSHALL K. (KENNY) MITCHELL
AUG 18, 1922 - JULY 24, 2009

Sheridan resident, Marshall K. (Kenny) Mitchell passed away at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings on July 24, 2009. He was 86 years old. Kenny was born August 18, 1922 to Marshall and Martha Mitchell. He married Jessie Hale August 20, 1944. He served in the Navy Air Corps in WWII. He retired form the Sheridan VA Hospital. Kenny loved fishing and hunting and telling stories to his many friends and family. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Della Kaufman and Janeva Chapline. He was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Wayne McKenzie and Zach Marmar. Kenny is survived by his wife, a brother, Chuck Mitchell, his children, Sandra Marmar of Woodstock, Vermont, Tom Mitchell of Sheridan, Victoria Sarokon of Story, and Larry Mitchell of Sheridan. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. A celebration of life will be held at the Sheridan Wesleyan Church Thursday, July 30 th at 10:00 am.

Clarence P. ‘Red’ May

Longtime Sheridan resident Clarence P. ‘Red’ May, 76, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, in Sheridan. Private services and burial in Sheridan Municipal cemetery have taken place. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. May was born Aug. 22, 1932, in Monticello, Minn., to George Joseph May and Mary Theresa (Rogers) May. He wed Patricia Whittier on Feb. 10, 1964, in St. Paul, Minn. He worked many years as a dairyman and enjoyed woodcarving, working on cars, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his younger sister. Survivors include his wife; one son, Jim, of Billings; one daughter, Abby Schultz of Bremerton, Wash.; 11 brothers and sisters in the St. Paul area; and four grandchildren.

Dr. Pat Cummings

Former Sheridan resident Dr. Pat Cummings, 56, died Saturday, July 11, 2009, near his home in Ponte Vedra, Fla. A memorial service is 7 p.m. on Friday, July 24, at the Wyo Theater with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Born Dec. 17, 1952, in Sheridan to John and Ivy Cummings, he attended Holy Name School, Sheridan High School, and Sheridan Community College. Dr. Cummings graduated Pacific University's College of Optometry, and worked in a private group practice in Sheridan from 1977 to 2003. He was a consulting optometrist at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Sheridan for more than 20 years and served as the American Optometric Association's 81st President from 2002 to 2003. In 2003, he assumed duties as vice president for professional affairs with Johnson & Johnson Vistakon in Jacksonville, Florida. His interests included skiing, outdoor sports, and carpentry, though his passion in life was for building and flying airplanes. He began studying for his pilot's license as a teenager, and became involved in building airplanes in his twenties. He would go on to build three airplanes of his own, and become a member of the Aerospace Medical Association. He was recognized by several civic and professional organizations for his dedication to his profession. Sheridan College presented the Golden Opportunity Outstanding Alumni Award to him in 1998. He was recognized twice as the Wyoming Optometrist of the Year and as the Great Western Council Optometrist of the Year in 2000. His humanitarian efforts included the Healthy Eyes Healthy People® program, through InfantSEE®, and the Patrick Everet Cummings Memorial Scholarship, which he created in honor of his late son. Dr. Cummings was preceded in death by his father, John Cummings, and his son, Patrick Cummings. Survivors include his wife Becky; mother Ivy Cummings; son Josh Sharp; daughter Abby Sharp; brother Michael Cummings; sister Mary Cummings Talaga; and one granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit the Sheridan College Foundation, Dr. Patrick Cummings' Scholarship Fund, PO Box 1500, Sheridan, Wyoming, 82801.

Nancy Ferguson

Nancy Eaton Ferguson, 88, of Wolf, passed away at her residence on July 21, 2009. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be at Eatons’ Ranch at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Feb. 28, 1921, in Sheridan to William and Patty (Alderson) Eaton, she attended Sheridan schools and was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Tommy Ferguson at Eatons’ Ranch on Sept. 5, 1942. She was the Sheridan Rodeo Queen in 1939, served on the Wolf Creek School Board, the Hospital Auxiliary Board, and was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Wyoming, the Book Review Club, and was Lady President of the Dude Ranchers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Billy Eaton; and a daughter, Judy Ferguson. Survivors include her children, Susan Van Allen, Patty Kaufmann, William Ferguson, and Thomas J. Ferguson, Jr.; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Nancy Eaton Ferguson Sheridan WYO Rodeo Scholarship Fund, c/o First Interstate Bank, PO Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

JANET MAE RALPH
MAY 13, 1933 - JULY 14, 2009

Former Sheridan resident beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend Janet Mae Lawrence formerly Janet Mae Schmidt, formerly Janet Mae Ralph went to join our lord on July 14, 2009. She was 76 years of age. She had been a resident of Brookside Healthcare in Redlands, CA. and was born the daughter of Richard W Ralph and Lynette M Hoiten both of Sheridan Wyoming on May 13, 1933. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952 and worked at different secretarial jobs most of her life. She had previously lived in Apple Valley CA for the past 52 years after she had relocated there in 1957 from Sheridan Wyoming. She had one brother Richard J. Ralph (Uncle Bus) who preceded her in death with who she was very close. She is survived by one son, Ricky Schmidt and his wife Carolyn; three grandchildren, Robert A Schmidt of Las Vegas NV, Matthew J Schmidt and his wife Jennifer and their two children, Mattison and Katie Jo also of Las Vegas NV; Mary Marcelo and her three children Gabrielle Hanson, Aurora Marcelo and Christopher Marcelo of Colorado Springs CO. Janet will always be remembered for her kind heart and love for her family and friends. She had a wonderful laugh and enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved Country music, dancing, cooking and made the best fried chicken. She will be missed by all who knew her. Welda L. ‘Billie’ Calkins Broom

Welda L. “Billie” Calkins Broom, 94, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Per her request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Cremains will be placed at her parent’s grave site in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born Jan. 12, 1915, in Noble, Ill., to James Frederick and Anna (Harris) Roe, she grew up in the Salt Lake City area. She moved to Sheridan in the late 1940’s. She worked at several businesses including D&D Hardware, Jersey Creamery, Sheridan Commercial Company and Duncan and Dickinson. She enjoyed sewing, cooking baking and refinishing furniture. She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and her husbands.
Survivors include a son, Scott Calkins of Sheridan; a daughter, Janis L. Calkins of Sheridan; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

LeRoy ‘Jack’ Husman

LeRoy "Jack" Husman, 85, of Sheridan, died Sunday, July 19, 2009, at his residence. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born in Sheridan on March 19, 1924, to Oscar and Christine Husman, he attended Sheridan schools. He graduated in January, 1942, earning a most valuable player award for football. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He married Betty Kelley Nov. 15, 1947, in Cheyenne. He was a brick mason and built his family home in Sheridan in 1948. He and three brothers were partners in Husman Brothers, Inc., a highway construction company in Wyoming and Montana. He later formed another construction company, General Enterprises, with a brother. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 520 and the American Legion. He and his wife enjoyed many years at their cabin on Rapid Creek and later, winters in Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers. Survivors include his children, Pete and Mike Husman of Sheridan, Nancy Garber of Big Horn; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan Senior Citizen Center, 211 Smith Center, Sheridan, WY 82801 or Trinity Lutheran Church, 135 Crescent Drive in Sheridan.

JULY 8, 1921 - JULY 17, 2009

Funeral services for Pauline Oltion, 88 year old resident of Story, Wyoming, who passed away July 17th, will be held Friday, July 24th at 10:00 a.m. at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo, Wyoming, with Reverend Bob McHenry officiating. Visitation will be held from the funeral home chapel on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services to follow the funeral.A reception and luncheon will follow at the Story Women_s Club in Story. Donations in Polly_s memory may be made to the Gatchell Museum in care of the Adams Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo, Wyoming. Pauline Kathryn Oltion, who went by _Polly_ all her adult life, was born on July 8, 1921 to Marshall and Sylvia Jenkins in a homestead cabin built by her father 35 miles south of Buffalo. This is the same cabin that is now on display at the Gatchell Museum in Buffalo. Polly was the third of eight children. She grew up on the family ranch in Antelope Basin and rode the range until she was 19, when she attended high school in Buffalo, graduating in 1942 after only 2 years. She then went to Denver and Seattle for nurse_s training. She married George Oltion in Seattle on October 25, 1943. They were married 53 years until his death in 1997. Polly and George had five children and lived in Washington, Montana, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Wyoming, eventually settling into a home that George built in Story, Wyoming. As their family grew, Polly gave up her nursing career to concentrate on family. Polly loved to invite guests into her home and enjoyed good conversation around the dinner table. She ran a ceramics studio for many years, turning her basement into a community center where people came to visit and work on pottery. She was active in the school board, volunteered as an emergency medical technician for the Story ambulance service, wrote magazine articles, and when her children grew older, worked at the Story post office and Story Library. Polly and George took many cross-country road trips, often at a moment_s notice, and occasionally went _across the pond_ as Polly called it, to visit friends in Scotland and Switzerland. Polly loved the Bighorn Mountains, often hiking deep into the forest on her own, a practice for which she was sometimes chastised by strangers she would meet on the trail, but one she would never give up. She once rode her horse, _Horse, _ from her brother_s ranch near Devil_s Tower all the way to Story (with George meeting her each night to make sure she was okay.) Polly_s later years were marked by the onset of Alzheimer_s Disease, a condition she fought with courage and good humor, retaining her generous, loving spirit right up to the end. Polly is survived by her five children: Sylvia Shapiro of Vashon Island, Washington; Shirley Farmer of Story, Wyoming; Susan Pearce of Buffalo, Wyoming; Raymond Oltion of Story, Wyoming; and Jerry Oltion of Eugene, Oregon; four sisters: Vida Jenkins of Ventura, California; June Taylor of Buffalo, Wyoming; Norma Closson of Evansville, Wyoming; and Nora Cellars of Bozeman, Montana; one brother: Bob Jenkins of Columbia Falls, Montana; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, her brother Forrest Jenkins, and her sister Louise Ridley.

Anna L. Roberts

Anna L. Roberts, 50, of Sheridan, died Sunday, July 19, 2009, at Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with George Tellez officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born Jan. 30, 1959, in Coalgate, Okla., to Sylvia Kiddie, she attended schools in Sulphur, Okla. She married Richard Roberts in Ardmore, Okla., on Dec. 22, 1975. In her younger years she worked outside the home as a care giver for the disabled. She enjoyed being a wife and mother and was said to “love life and anyone around her.” She was preceded in death by her mother. Survivors include her husband, and a sister, Nannette Morris of Del City, Okla. Memorials may benefit Greenhouse Living For Sheridan, PO Box 444, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Emma H. Fry

Emma H. Fry, 95, of Sheridan, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Sheridan Manor. Viewing is 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with Clarence Nelson and Donovan Olson officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. She was born June 25, 1914, in Aurora, Ill., to Albert and Minnie Albrecht. She worked as a laundress for many years. In 1952, she married W.A. Fry in Sheridan. They later divorced. She enjoyed her flowers, spending time with family and friends, reading, camping, hiking, walking, picnics, playing pinochle and rummy, ice-cream and Kentucky Fried Chicken. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Fry; stepsons Bill Fry and LeRoy Fry; sisters Ruth Leis, Dorothy Brown, Alma Falvo and Gertrude Fraser; and a brother, Harold Albrecht. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Bisbee of Sheridan; stepchildren Nellie Murray of Kirby, Mont., Nancy McCallister of Heppner, Ore., and Danny Fry of Sheridan; a sister, Esther Benton of Buffalo; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan Senior Center, 211 Smith Center, Sheridan, WY 82801 or the Sheridan Manor Activities Department, 1851 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Joseph H. McGuigan

Joseph H. McGuigan, 73, of Sheridan, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Per his request, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Born on Oct. 18, 1935, in Philadelphia to John and Matilda McGuigan, he enlisted in the Navy after attending school and served from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1958. He ran cattle, enjoyed panning for gold and collecting coins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Ritch and Deborah Womack; a sister, Betty Forziati; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pauline Oltion

Pauline Oltion, 88, of Story, died Friday, July 17, 2009. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8-9:30 a.m. Friday, followed at 10 a.m. by funeral services at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Burial and graveside services will follow in Willow Grove cemetery. A reception and luncheon will follow at the Story Woman's Club. Virginia ‘Rick’ Keith

Former Buffalo resident Virginia “Rick” Keith, 97, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, in Atlantic, Iowa. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A vigil and rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with Father Pete Johnson as celebrant. Following mass, burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Michael D. Case

Michael D. Case, 48, of Billings, Mont., died Friday, July 17, 2009 at Billings Clinic following a brief illness. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings. Born December 22, 1960 to Dawson and Alice Case in Sheridan, he attended grade school in Sheridan and Tongue River High School, graduating in 1979. Case loved the water and enjoyed boating and water skiing at Tongue River Reservoir with his son, Brandon. He is survived by his son, Brandon Case of Billings; parents, Alice and Dawson Case of Ranchester; and brother Alan (Andrea) Case and their daughter Alanna of Watertown, SD. Memorials may be made directly to the family to go toward Brandon's college education, or to Relay For Life, 2201 St. John's Ave., Billings, MT 59102. Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

David ‘Wally’ Leatherwood

Former Sheridan resident David “Wally” Leatherwood, 59, of Cheyenne died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Davis Hospice Center in Cheyenne. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes. A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 6 in Cheyenne. Born May 16, 1950, in Tacoma, Wash., to Delbert and Jean Kay (Williams) Leatherwood, he worked in the Tacoma area and in Wyoming. He resided in Sheridan for several years after retirement. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 469 in Cheyenne and Alcoholics Anonymous. Survivors include two daughters, Clarissa Leatherwood and Jessie Bromenschenkel, both of Minnesota; two brothers, Daniel Leatherwood of Cheyenne and Louis Leatherwood of Littleton, Colo.; two granddaughters; and two nieces and two nephews.
