Sheryl Jean Robertson
Former Sheridan resident Sheryl Jean (Fairweather) Robertson, 60, of Joshua, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Per her request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be later. Born May 11, 1948, in Sheridan to Donald and Anna (Johnson) Minchin, she attended school in Sheridan and Nebraska. She worked at the Best Western Sheridan Center until 1997, when she moved to Fort Worth. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and animals and was passionate about art and cooking. A stepbrother, Robert Bates, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Roy Robertson of Joshua; two sons, Charles W. Ekis Jr. of Texas and Jay E. Ekis of Maryland; a daughter, Erin J. Fairweather of Montana; a brother, Michael Bates of Colorado; two sisters, Patty Mueller of Colorado and Angie O’Brien of Sheridan; her stepfather, Bill Wyatt; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Dwayne Thorpe
Dwayne Thorpe, 62, of Sheridan, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at his home. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral home with the Rev. Arthur Maendl officiating. A reception will follow at Sheridan Masonic Lodge. Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Billings to Kenneth and Lois (Woods) Thorpe, he served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War in both Vietnam and the Philippines. He returned to the States to begin a career in banking. He married
Nancy Butterfield on June 26, 1985, in Sheridan. After more than 30 years, he retired in 2006 from First Interstate Bank Sheridan as senior vice president of retail banking. An avid woodworker and hobbyist, he was always working on the next project. He enjoyed the Big Horn Mountains, fishing, camping, riding ATVs with his dogs, family and friends, pool, bowling, golf and poker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary. Survivors include his wife; his mother; a brother, Lloyd; two sons, Ken and Matt; a daughter, Sara Struckman; and many members of his extended family. William James Clark
Former Sheridan resident William James Clark, 67, of Mitchell, Neb., died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at Regional West Medical Center in Nebraska. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday at Gering Memorial Chapel with military honors by the Nebraska National Guard. Born June 26, 1941, at Rock Springs, Wis., to Melvin and Madellin (Dorro) Clark, he received his early education in Reedsburg, Wis., and earned his General Education Development certificate in 2002. He married
Nancy Berto on Feb. 14, 1984, in Sheridan, where the couple made their home.
He was a member of Legion and the North American Hunting and Fishing Club.
He was preceded in death by brothers Dean and Dan.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Lynn and Sandy; six children, Niala Mette, Lisa Nyggoard, Jody Clark, Ruth Godwin, Jennifer Sullivan and Shawn Berto; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established to Big Horn National Forest.
Phillip Edward Moore
Former Sheridan resident Phillip Edward Moore, 73, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Kadlec Medical Center in Kennewick, Wash. Born July 15, 1935, in Forbes, N.D., to Guy Nicholas and Josephine (Taylor) Moore, he moved with his family to Sheridan shortly after his birth. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, Big Horn and Otter, Mont., graduating from Big Horn High School. In 1952 he married
Barbara Norris, and in 1954 they moved from Big Horn to Lewiston, Idaho, eventually relocating to Kennewick, then Benton City, Wash. After raising five children, the couple returned to Kennewick. Mr. Moore worked in the grocery business for 35 years, primarily as a produce manager. The couple enjoyed several winters in Arizona, fishing, golf, and playing cards with family and friends. He was an avid fisherman and longtime member of the Columbia Basin Bass Club with dozens of trophies to show for it. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include four daughters, Cynthia Moore of Hood River, Ore., Kathryn Miller of Kennewick, Carla Saffle of Spokane, Wash., and Sylvia McCarty of Pasco, Wash.; a son, Ronald Moore of West Richland, Wash.; two sisters, Judy Adams of Sheridan and Roberta Adsit of Big Horn; a brother, David Moore of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Elaine D. (Peters) Sanders
Elaine D. (Peters) Sanders, 89, of Sheridan died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing is 5-7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with Christian Wake Service to follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born March 20, 1919, in Rushville, Neb., to Arnold and Philomena (Jahn) Peters, she attended schools through high school. She married
Herman L. Sanders on Oct. 15, 1940, in Rushville. They resided in the Hay Springs, Neb., area, where they ranched and raised registered polled Herefords for 12 years. The family moved to Clearmont in 1952, where they ranched until retiring in 1985 to Sheridan. A member of Holy Name Catholic Parish of Sheridan, she active in the Clearmont Women’s Club, the Clearmont and Holy Name Altar Society, and Clearmont Farmers Union. She was also an active member of the Sheridan Senior Center as a volunteer and member of the Sheridanaires choral group and the Sheridan chapter of AARP. She was known as a kind and generous person with a strong Christian faith. She was preceded in death by two sons, Henry and Thomas Michael; eight siblings, and two grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; seven children, Nancy Hower, Leland (Bud) Sanders, Doris Wilke, James Sanders, Patricia Sanders, Alan Sanders and Roger Sanders; five foster children including Louie Sickler and Mike and Clifford Haley; a sister, Arlene (Peters) Clarke of Laurel, Mont.; a brother, Arnold Peters of Wimberley, Texas; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. William D. Shosten
William D. Shosten, 81, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Private family graveside services will be at Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Oct. 4, 1927, at Tie Camp above Buffalo to William B. and Eva Shosten, he enlisted in the Army in 1946 and served until his honorable discharge in 1947. He married
Maxine Paxton in Hardin, Mont., on Nov. 10, 1950. Mr. Shosten worked as a firefighter for the city, the county, and the VA. He designed and built the original Trail’s End Motel and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Lee Shosten. Survivors include his wife; sons William P. Shosten of Sheridan and Anton D. Shosten of Lovell; a sister, Mick Mediate of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. Doris M. Sales
Doris M. Sales, 81, of Sheridan, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Per her request, cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Aug. 10, 1927, to Roy and Georgie Kaple in Tucson, Ariz., she graduated from Tucson High School and worked many years as a waitress at several Las Vegas casinos. She loved to travel. She was preceded in death by a son, James, and a granddaughter, Katie. Survivors include two sons, Dr. Michael Lund of Felton, Calif., and Jerry Lund of Sheridan; and a brother, Bob Kaple of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Marjorie Reid
Former Sheridan resident Marjorie May Reid, 87, of Billings died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at Cremation & Funeral Gallery in Billings. Interment will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery next to her husband. Born May 20, 1921, in Vernal, Utah, to Eric A. Cramer and Thine Magdalene Nielson, she spent her grade school years on the family's farm near Vernal and on her Uncle Ray Reader's Sunshine Ranch in Jensen, Utah.
During high school she moved with her family from Utah to the Big Horn Basin, where her father worked for Marathon Oil Co. She was a cheerleader for Greybull High School, a soda jerk at the local drug store, and an attendant in the movie theater, where she watched her favorite movie, “Gone With the Wind.”
She loved to dance to the big-band music of her era. During the Depression, she left school to work to help support her family. After a year, she returned home and graduated from high school in 1940. She married
Cline Thomas “CT” Reid. They made their home in Sheridan for many years. They enjoyed mountain camp-outs with their friends and traveled across the country. Mrs. Reid enjoyed spending time with her family, especially playing croquet and Uno with her great-grandchildren. She lived for several years at Magnolia Place in Billings, where she enjoyed the company of her “sorority sisters” and caretakers.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant brother, Keith; and her eldest brother, Orin Cramer of Idaho. Survivors include a daughter, Rita Pumphrey of Billings; a sister, Kathleen Shores of Greybull; a brother, Darwin Cramer of Powell; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Joseph ‘Joe’ Boyko Sr.
Sheridan County native Joseph “Joe” Boyko Sr., 86, of Worland died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Washakie Medical Center in Worland after a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 27, 1922, in Kooi to Frank and Mary (Wojtyla) Boyko, he grew up in this area. Following schooling, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 and worked from the Ranchester camp until 1941. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the South Pacific until being discharged in April 1947. He returned to the Sheridan area, where he worked for B. Gross Co. in its salvage operation until 1956. He married
Julia R. Louie in Sheridan on Nov. 29, 1947. The couple lived here until moving to Worland in February 1957. Mr. Boyko worked 27 years for the Chief Service Center Exxon Station in Worland, retiring in 1984. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing cards, and raising a garden. He was a member of Sheridan Eagles Lodge since 1977. He was preceded in death by a son, Russell Leroy Boyko; a daughter, Frances Marie Boyko; a grandson, Robert Upton; seven sisters, Eva Jean Boyko, Agnes Neff, Annie Haler, Ida Nessbacher, Frances Grimshaw, Mary Roberts and Lois Etchechoury; and four brothers, Andrew, John, George, and Frank Boyko.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe Boyko Jr. of Worland; three daughters, Cathy Upton of Meeteetse, Laurie Ann Yule of Worland, and Molly Jo Kluver of Recluse; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. A rosary and vigil service will be 7 p.m. today at Veile Mortuary Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Irene Campbell
Irene Campbell, 69, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Pastor Darrell White officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Sept. 14, 1939, in Sheridan to Edward and Anna Tetschner, she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1958. She was a cook for Sheridan County School District 2 for 26 years. She enjoyed knitting and reading and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Melva Jean Schuman. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Lotze of Seattle; a son, Don Campbell of Kentucky; a sister, Lory Loucks of Sheridan; three grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews. Brian Jess Johnson
Brian Jess Johnson, 45, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at his residence. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. John Jackson officiating. Born Dec. 21, 1963, in Muncie, Ind., to Dale and Marlene Johnson, he graduated from Green River High School and married
Carmen Rittenhouse on June 20, 1998, in Las Vegas. They made their home in Rock Springs before moving to Sheridan seven years ago. He was an aircraft mechanic for Big Horn Airways. He enjoyed mountain biking, hiking, camping, music, darts, dirt biking, four-wheeling, cars, and aviation. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Derek Robinson and Braxton Confer, both of Rock Springs; two stepsons, Nathan Wagner of Worland and Eric Killion of Sheridan; his father of Green River; his mother, Marlene Maki of Butte, Mont.; a brother, Shawn Johnson of Panama City, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Betsy Snydal Boynton
Betsy Snydal Boynton, 61, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo of multiple sclerosis. Private family services will be later. Born June 3, 1947, in Wray, Colo., to Maxwell and Suzanne B. Snydal, the family moved to Fort Morgan, Colo., in 1956. She graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1965 and from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1969 with a degree in anthropology. She married
Woodward R. Boynton on Dec. 19, 1970, in Fort Morgan. They made their home in San Francisco. orporate moves took them to Quincy, Ill., Lemster, N.H., and in 1978 to Old Saybrook, Conn. For the past 10 years she lived at the Amie Holt Care Center to be near her sister, Margo Brotherton of Sheridan. She enjoyed gardening and flower arranging and took pride in being a stay-at-home mom. In addition to her sister, survivors include her husband of Old Saybrook; a daughter, Britt Boynton of Jersey City, N.J.; a son, Ashton Boynton of New York City; and a brother, Chris Snydal of Boulder. Max Piaseck
Max Piaseck, 65, of Buffalo died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Vigil service and rosary are 6 p.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Pete Johnson as celebrant. Private family interment will be in Radium, Colo. Born May 55, 1943, in Gunnison, Colo., to Julius “Max” and Dorothy Piaseck, he moved with his family as a young boy to Kremmling, Colo., where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from West Grand High School in Kremmling in 1961 and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. He received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1968 and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam during the 1960s. After military service he returned to Colorado and settled in the Denver area, where he was in the Colorado National Guard and worked as an engineer and draftsman. Mr. Piaseck was known as instrumental in the construction of many high-rise buildings that make up Denver’s skyline as well as being head civil engineer on the new Denver International Airport and the Glenwood Canyon Project. After retirement he stayed in the Denver area. An avid model railroad collector, he was a member of Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and the National Model Railroad Association. He was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include a son, Mark Piaseck of Denver; two daughters, Lisamarie McGrath of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Heather Lynn Piaseck of Thornton, Colo.; a brother, Ernie Miller of Limon, Colo.; a sister, Dottie Smith of Buffalo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Olive J. Larson
Olive Josephine Larson, 97, of Buffalo died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel with the Rev. Nancy Brooks officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Born Sept. 8, 1911, in Wynot, Neb., to Charles and Amelia (Sandberg) Swan, she grew up and attended school in Hartington, Neb., where she graduated from Hartington High School in 1929. Roger Larson in 1932 in Clearwater, Neb. The couple resided in Clearwater until 1939, when they moved to Cheyenne. In 1945 they moved to Buffalo, where her husband was a barber. After her children were raised, Mrs. Larson worked for J.C. Penney Co. in Buffalo. Mr. Larson died in 1979 and she continued living in Buffalo. She had resided at Amie Holt Care Center for the past two and a half years. A member of Union Congregational Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, she also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed travel, playing bingo, going out to dinner, and spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Larry Larson; three brothers; and her twin sister. Survivors include one daughter, Laverna Epp of Hastings, Neb.; one son, Lanny Larson of Thornton, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Helen Osgood-Jensen
Helen Osgood-Jensen, 81, of Sheridan died Monday, March 23, 2009, at her son’s home in Camp Verde, Ariz. Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. April 10 at Sheridan Wesleyan Church, 404 West Brundage Lane. Born Oct. 14, 1927, on the family farm near Ross, N.D., to Frank (Jr.) and Emma (Novacek) Slemin, she didn't learn English until she went to school, as Czech was spoken in her home. When she was 5, her father died. A few years later, the family moved to Ophemin, Mont. She graduated from Ophemin High School as valedictorian in 1945. She went on to get her teaching certificate and later a bachelor's degree in education from Montana State University in Missoula. In May 1954, she married
Stanley G. Wittmayer in Glasgow, Mont. They were divorced. She married
Vernon L. Osgood in June 1966 in Sheridan. He was a beekeeper and operated Osgood Honey. For 16 years of their retirement, the Osgoods lived in a motor home and traveled all over the United States working with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program. Mr. Osgood died in an accident in June 2000. Mrs. Osgood was an avid reader, stamp and coin collector, and knitter. She also tatted and made hundreds of sweaters and afghans (most went to charities) and more than 300 baby caps for newborns at Glasgow Deaconess Hospital. In February 2003, she married
Donald Jensen. He died of lung cancer five months later. Survivors include a son, David Wittmayer; daughters Laura Welty and Mr. Osgood’s four daughters; all of the Jensen children; two sisters, Mildred Kuykendall and Barbara Joan Gardner; a brother, San Ohanesian; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
