Johnnie Mae Esters
Johnnie Mae Esters, 84, of Parkman died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Viewing will be noon to 4 p.m. today from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Dayton cemetery with the Rev. Robert Robinson officiating.
Born Feb. 1, 1924, in Griffin, Ark., to William and Doshie (Griffith) Golden, the family moved to Jena, La., when she was a small child. She attended schools in Jena. In 1982, she moved to Parkman. She worked in several motels in Sheridan as a housekeeper. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and music. Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Renfrow of Sterling, Alaska; four sons, Charles Hart of Roundup, Mont., Walon Esters of Ranchester, John Esters of Parkman, and Roger Esters of Canyon Lake, Texas; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Deborah Lee McCoul
Former Sheridan resident Deborah Lee McCoul, 54, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, in Loveland, Colo., as a result of a traffic accident, according to family members.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Sheridan. She was the daughter of the late Eugene and Leonna Williams of Sheridan. She was known for showing that disabled people can accomplish what others say they can’t. Survivors include a daughter, Shawna Lee McCoul; a sister, Sandy Williams; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.
Gladys Sturlin Grimm
Gladys Sturlin Grimm, 92, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. At her request, there will be no services. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Born Jan. 26, 1916, to Leroy and Ida (Denler) Sturlin in Joliet, Mont., she attended school in Joliet and later in Portland, Ore., where the family moved when she was 12. She married
Walter Grimm in Boise, Idaho. The couple enjoyed traveling in their streamline trailer and spent many winters in Arizona and summers in Polson, Mont. Mr. Grimm died in 1990. Mrs. Grimm moved to Myrtle Creek, Ore. In 1997, her nephew, the late Gene Sturlin, who was raised with her by her parents, moved her to Buffalo. She became a resident of Sheridan Manor in 2005. She worked various jobs including as a commercial artist. She designed signs — including several neon signs in Las Vegas — and posters with company logos and sold her artwork on the West Coast. She enjoyed automobiles and called herself a “little gypsy.” She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include a nephew and a niece.
Ronald Carl Schutt
Ronald Carl Schutt, 65, of Buffalo died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008, at his daughter’s home in Buffalo. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Friday in Lusk cemetery with the Rev. Mark Lohr officiating. Born June 24, 1943, in Lusk to Carl and Ethel Schutt, he grew up and attended school in Manville, then Lusk. After high school he worked with his father on a road construction off and on for 20 years. He also worked as a truck driver and owned a gas station in Glendo. He lived in Salt Lake City for a time working as a truck driver and retiring in 1991. He moved to Buffalo in July to live with his daughter. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include a son, Ronald Jr. of California; two daughters, Corrina Turk of Buffalo and Cathy Hartley of Bremerton, Wash.; a brother, Jerry of Lusk; two sisters, Bonnie Sue Orr and Lorraine Williams, both of Cheyenne; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Charles Gilmour Kennaugh
Charles Gilmour Kennaugh, 87, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. He was father of Susan McKee of Sheridan. Services were Oct. 27 at Christ Episcopal Church in Glenrock with graveside service following at Glenrock cemetery. Born Feb. 24, 1921, in Glenrock to Christopher and Esther Catherine Kennaugh, he was raised and educated in Glenrock and attended the University of Wyoming and Colorado A&M (Colorado State University) in Fort Collins, Colo. He served with the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married
Billie Jeanne Hershey on Dec. 11, 1948. The couple operated Kennaugh’s Paint and Furniture store in the early 1950s and also owned and operated funeral and ambulance services for the town of Glenrock. He was active in the Masons, Eastern Star, Shriners and Odd Fellows. He was a member of the school, hospital and cemetery boards. In 2007, he was presented with a lifetime achievement award for tree planting services to the community, including the trees surrounding Glenrock cemetery. He enjoyed gardening, helping his neighbors and was known as a master prankster and storyteller. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Arbory and George. Survivors include three additional children, Charlene Brown of Fort Collins, Donna Gray of Hendersen, Colo., and David Kennaugh of Glenrock; a sister, Mona Plummer Griffiths of Casper; a brother, Don of Glenrock; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, Cowboy Joe Club or the Arbor Foundation.
John Terence McGowan
John Terence McGowan, 44, of Sheridan, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at his residence. Visitation is Thursday and a memorial service is Friday at Dangler Funeral Home in Summit, N.J. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Nov. 26, 1963, in Orange, N.J., to John P. and Honora M. (Dailey) McGowan, he grew up and attended schools in Summit and graduated from Summit High School. He attended the University of Richmond in Virginia. He moved to Jackson in 2001, then Casper, before moving to Sheridan in 2006. He was employed at Country Kitchen. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his mother of Chatham, N.J.; a brother, Kevin McGowan of Jackson; two sisters, Honora M. Harvey of New Providence, N.J., and Kathleen Thomson of Boca Raton, Fla.
William R. Stall
Former Big Horn resident William R. Stall, 71, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, of pulmonary disease, according to family. Stall grew up in Big Horn and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1959. He worked at the Laramie Daily Boomerang throughout college and started with The Associated Press in Cheyenne in 1960. He was the correspondent in Reno, Nev., from 1963 to 1966. He moved to Sacramento, Calif., as the AP bureau chief in 1967. Stall served as the first press secretary for California Gov. Jerry Brown in 1975, then joined the Los Angeles Times, where he worked for 30 years covering politics, the environment, and writing editorials. From 1981 to 1984 he served as Washington bureau chief of the Hartford (Conn.) Courant, a Times Mirror paper. In 2004 he won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing at the Los Angeles Times for a series of articles on how newly elected Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger should address fiscal and policy issues facing California. He enjoyed the Sierra Mountains and skiing and served on the board of the American Alpine Club. Survivors include his wife, Ann Baker; two daughters, Tracy Roll of River Pines, Calif., and Erica Wiggins of Austin, Texas; and six grandchildren. Virginia May Ruby
Sheridan native Virginia May (Reed) Ruby, 85, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. A memorial service is 2 p.m. today at The Gathering Place in San Bernardino, Calif. Interment is 2 p.m. Nov. 18 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in San Andrus, Calif. Born May 20, 1923, in Sheridan, she graduated from Sheridan High School and married
Delbert Ruby of Buffalo. They lived in this area until 1956. She moved to Billings, then to California in 1963, eventually settling for the rest of her life in West Point, Calif. Survivors include two sons, Garry of California and Ron of Oregon; a daughter Judy (Ruby) van der Water of Minnesota; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Marlin M. Mosley
Marlin M. Mosley, 33, of Casper, formerly of Sheridan, died of natural causes Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, in Casper. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Ranchester Community Church with Pastor Jeff Browning officiating. Born Sept. 8, 1975, in Sheridan to Bob and Sandra Mosley, he was known to family and friends as "Bouncer" or "Bounce." He grew up and attended school in Gillette. He attended trade school to become a mud engineer and worked in the Wyoming oil fields. He enjoyed spending time with his children, camping, fishing, and motorized dirt biking. Survivors include three children, Layne, Marlayna and Daltyn, all of Gillette; his mother, Sandra Love Jolley, and stepfather, Ed, of Sheridan; his father of New Mexico; a grandmother, Betty Love Jolovich of Dayton; six siblings, Marla, Rus, Becky, Bobby, Jessica, and Jayne; five stepsisters, Debbie, Syna, Laurie, Eydie, and Marjorie Jolley; and several nieces and nephews.
Cornelia ‘Nellie’ Pate
Cornelia "Nellie" Pate, 94, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at Kane Funeral Home. Services and interment will be private. Born Oct. 28, 1914, in Chicago to Peter and Irene Suranyi, she moved at age 9 months with her family to a homestead in Arvada. At age 18 she began working as a cook on the Fryburger Ranch, where she noted herself as "the best cook in Sheridan County." While working on the ranch she met foreman Carl Ritola. They married
Dec. 7, 1935. She spent her life as a homemaker. Mr. Ritola died in 1968. In 1973 she married
Fred Pate in Sheridan. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, crocheting, embroidery, and gardening and was known as an excellent seamstress. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her second husband; a half brother, Edward Suranyi; a sister, Violet Donnafield; and a grandson, Curt A. Ritola. Survivors include two children, Dr. Carl Ritola and Judy Pinder, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Mildred Larson of Port Angeles, Wash., and Evelyn Roche of San Antonio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. John Victor Mill
John Victor Miller, 60, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, in Advanced Care Hospital of Montana in Billings. Viewing will be 4-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries with Barry Benth officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. At his request, please wear Hawaiian or casual attire to the service. Born May 11, 1948, in Sheridan to Victor E. Miller and Winifred A. (Salstrom) Miller, he grew up and graduated from high school in 1966 in Sheridan. He became interested in radiology while serving in the Army as a stateside medic between 1968 and 1972. He took formal training in radiology and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder before returning to Sheridan in 1977 and going to work in the private practice of Dr. Fred Lindemann. In 1996, he joined Sheridan Memorial Hospital as head of radiology, retiring in May 2007. He married
Brenda Wilson on July 7, 1995, at Lake Tahoe in Nevada. The couple enjoyed travel, taking motor home trips to Canada and the Western states. They took several trips to Hawaii, where last winter he caught a 153-pound Ahi tuna, one of his favorite memories. They also enjoyed attending concerts and had seen their favorites: Phil Collins, Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney. Mr. Miller enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golf, hunting, fishing, good food, cooking, the Denver Broncos, making wine, and cars, including a 1930 Model A that belonged to his grandfather and a 1967 Camero convertible. He was proud of his first hole-in-one, Sept. 17 on a par 4. Survivors include his mother; his wife; two daughters, Brandi Harris of Newark, Ohio, and Callie Drell of Sheridan; a stepdaughter, Kayla Wilson of Sheridan; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the John V. Miller Memorial Fund at First Interstate Bank c/o Margaret Sare to be used for a junior golf scholarship.
John David Ward
John David Ward, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. At his request, no formal services are planned. Family and friends will have a memorial gathering this summer in northwestern Colorado. Born May 22, 1928, in Hazelton, Pa., to Joseph and Thelma Ward, he spent his childhood in the Hazelton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., area. After high school, he joined the Army and was sent to postwar Germany. He returned to Pennsylvania, entering Pennsylvania State University to become a mining engineer like his father. After graduation, he worked for Bethlehem Steel in the “Circuit Program” for engineers at several coal mines in Pennsylvania. He later moved to Denver, where his parents were living, and enrolled in the University of Denver Law School. He met Judy Burgess, a secretary at the school; they married
in April 1963 and resided in Denver. Mr. Ward went into private practice before re-entering the mining industry in the early 1970s focusing on permitting and government relations. After his successful permitting of the Colowyo coal mine near Meeker, Colo., he was named an original member of the Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Board. In the early 1980s, he was named director of the Colorado Division of Mines under Gov. Richard Lamm, where he served until he was appointed by President Reagan as director of the Office of Surface Mining in Washington, D.C. After leaving public service, he returned to private law practice in Harrisburg, Pa., focusing on land-use issues. In 1995, the couple moved to Sheridan to semiretire and be closer to family. He was known for his infectious wit and “sparkling blue eyes.” He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a sister, Joan Atwater of Rochester, N.Y.; two children, Marcy Ward of Gem, Kan., and Doug Ward of Hayden, Idaho; and two grandchildren. Margaret Madron
Margaret Madron, 87, of Sheridan, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. Viewing is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home.

Kenneth Madron in Sheridan on Aug. 10, 1940. She was a member of Wyoming Fiddlers and enjoyed playing guitar and dancing. She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Maakestad of Sheridan and Karen Lindstrom of Gillette; two sisters, Ruth Vannoy of Ranchester and Jean Castle of Billings; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Wayne Leslie Russell
Wayne Leslie Russell, 70, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008. Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will take place later. Born Feb. 18, 1938, in Fort Collins, Colo., he grew up in Laramie and graduated from Laramie High School. He loved horses and country living and worked on many ranches. He also owned a ranch and was known as a quiet, gentle man. He worked 18 years for Sheridan County School District 2 as a custodian. He married
Anita Vass, who died of cancer. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Russell; a sister, Doris Johnson of Laramie; a brother, James Russell of Casper; two sons, Les of Sheridan and Dean of Canada; a daughter, DeeDee of Livingston, Mont.; four stepdaughters, Pam Yates of Gillette, Janet Scharen of Shell, Lisa Flinders of Kamas, Utah, and Cheryl Good of Gillette; two stepsons, Billy Suranyi of Arvada and John Finley of Austin, Texas; 34 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
