Pearl E. Stelzer
Pearl E. Stelzer, 86, of Fairfield, Mont., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Teton Medical Center in Choteau, Mont., from natural causes. Her daughter is Elaine Kristiansen of Sheridan. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the Gorder Funeral Home in Choteau. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Assembly of God Church. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Sunset Hills cemetery in Fairfield. Born June 6, 1922 in Wolf Point, Mont., to Albert and Mary (Fast) Holderman, she was raised and educated in Wolf Point, graduating from high school there. She married
Jacob Stelzer June 20, 1942, in Seattle. She was a homemaker and previously worked with her husband operating Jake's Cleaning Service in Lewistown. She enjoyed cooking and sewing and was a member of the Fairfield Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; a sister; and a grandson. Survivors include sons Richard of Power, Mont., and Robert of Shelbyville, Tenn.; a sister, Violet Martin of Wolf Point; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Angela R. Laslie, 46, of Sheridan, died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Larry A. Laslie on Aug. 18, 1989, in Palacios, Texas. She was a homemaker and part-time accountant. Mrs. Laslie volunteered leading Bible studies and at the Welch Cancer Center. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and working puzzles. Survivors include her husband, Larry, of Sheridan; two sons, Russell Peugh and Randall Laslie, both of Sheridan; five daughters, Stacy Findley and Rachel Laslie, both of Sheridan, Marla Laslie of El Campo, Texas, Crystal Laslie of Victoria, Texas and Melissa Giddis of Vida, Mont.; one brother, Basil Boatwright III of Texas; and 13 grandchildren.
Grace Amestoy
Grace Amestoy, 80, of Buffalo, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at her home. Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home. Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at the Catholic church with Father Pete Johnson as celebrant. Born June 14, 1928, in Urepl, France, to Jean and Antoinette Fernandez, she grew up and attended school in Urepl. After school she worked as a maid until 1959 when she met Pierre Amestoy. They married
Sept. 1, 1959, and moved to the United States where they lived in Jordan, Mont., and ran a sheep ranch. In 1962, the couple moved to Forsyth, Mont., where they leased a ranch and raised sheep until 1977, when they moved to Buffalo. Mr. Amestoy worked on ranches and in construction. Mrs. Amestoy was a homemaker. She enjoyed helping out on the ranch, gardening, growing flowers, and spending time in the mountains with her family. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Survivors include her husband; two sons, John of Buffalo and Joseph of Helena, Mont.; a daughter, Katherine Amestoy of Sheridan; one brother, Simone Fernandez of France; three sisters, Mary Louise Latapie, Mary Urrutia and Marceline Istil, all of France. Kenneth ‘Mike’ Bush
Former Burgess Junction resident Kenneth “Mike” Bush, 71 of Sundance, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at his home. Funeral services were Thursday at the Sundance United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial followed at Mount Moriah cemetery in Sundance with Fidler Isburg Funeral Chapels of Sundance in charge of arrangements. Born Jan. 18, 1937, to Bill and Alberta Bush, he was the second of six children. He grew up in Hulett. After graduation, he spent time in Alaska before returning to work in Hulett. He worked logging, construction and at the Co-op. He married
Janice Knapp on June 14, 1957. In 1960 he went to work for the Wyoming Highway Department in Hulett, the beginning of a 39-year career. The family lived in Burgess Junction, then Moorcroft before settling in Sundance in 1971. He continued working for the highway department as area maintenance supervisor until his retirement in December, 1998. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, old cars and airplanes. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tim, and sister, Jill. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael and Richard of Gillette; daughter Lisa Bush of Casper; three brothers, Roger of Cody, Jerry of Beulah and Kelly of Gillette; and three grandsons. Irma E. Salstrom
Irma E. Salstrom, 77, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Born April 19, 1931, in Garryowen, Mont., to Victor Miller and Gladys Clearwater, she was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She worked as a supply technician for 41 years, in both the old Sheridan hospital and in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking cinnamon rolls, sewing quilts and playing Bingo. It was said she was always willing to lend a hand to anyone and always put others before herself. She was preceded in death by five siblings; a son, Patrick; and a grandson, Danny. Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Clearwater of Sheridan; a brother, Bob Miller of Casper; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. William L. Scofield
William L. Scofield, 73, of Sheridan, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Felix Martinito officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born July 29, 1935, in Stamford, Conn., to Ralph and Dorothy Scofield, he attended the University of Vermont, receiving a degree in economics. He married
Susan Malicay Nov. 16, 1985, in the Philippines. He worked as a patrol sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 14 years until his retirement due to injuries received in the line of duty. He participated in Police Olympics, played on the Sheriff’s Department football team, and was a member of the Delta Psi Fraternity. He competed in the National Rifle Association shooting competition where he was named “Distinguished Rifleman.” He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; his children, Eva Scofield stationed in Alexandria, Va., Suzanne Steinmitz of Mission Viejo, Calif., Diana Lovett of Phoenix, Philip Scofield of Alexandria, and Ian Scofield of Sheridan; a brother, Ralph Jr. of North Palm Beach, Fla.; and sisters, Marjorie Truesdale of Claremont, N.H., and Phyllis Kramer of Alhembra, Calif. Gertrude Bernice Royal, 89, mother of Catherine Butler of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at Mountain Towers Healthcare in Cheyenne. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Wheatland with Pastor Skip Perry officiating. Inurnment will be in Wheatland cemetery. Jess Wilford Royal in Hardin, Mont., Sept. 27, 1937. They resided in the Sheridan area where they owned and operated a ranch, and raised cattle and wheat. They lived in Washington and Idaho, moving in 1945 to Chugwater where they farmed. They relocated to Dwyer, then Wheatland in 1965, where she worked as a sales clerk at McDonald’s Department Store, retiring in 1984. She enjoyed wind chimes, was a member of Women of the Moose and Wheatland United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include daughters Catherine Butler of Sheridan and Beverly Burns of Wheatland; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. Thomas Earle Buchanan
Thomas Earle Buchanan, 90, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. At his request there will be no services. Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Sheridan Masonic cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Buchanan was born June 5, 1918, in Ord, Neb., to Thomas Shedrick Buchanan and Edna Mabel Barnes. Six weeks after his birth, he and his mother returned to their ranch on Powder River near Moorehead, Mont. He attended grade schools in Powder River County, Mont., and Midwest. The family moved to Sheridan in 1930, and he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1937. He married
Mary Gray Lane in Billings on May 25, 1945. Mr. Buchanan began a career with Sheridan County Electric and was a power plant operator for Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. at Acme for 41 years before retiring in 1981. He was initiated in 1942 into Big Horn Mountain Masonic Lodge 43 and was a member of York Rite, Kalif Shrine, and Sheridan Elks Lodge. He was also a life member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and former president of Local 646. After retirement he was active in the local AARP chapter, volunteered at Sheridan County Library, and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was a member of the Sheridan County Historical Society and researched his family genealogy for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001; two brothers, William Hall Buchanan and Lyle Lavere Buchanan; and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include his son, Ted Buchanan of Gillette; a daughter, Nancy Talbott of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters and a great-grandson. Barbara K. Schoonmaker
Barbara K. Schoonmaker, 77, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial service is 1 p.m. Thursday in Lander at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Linda Wilson officiating. Inurnment will be in Lander Mount Hope cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Sept. 17, 1931, in Lander to “Buster” and Lucille (Steers) Morss, she graduated from Lander High School in 1949 and received many scholastic awards and scholarships. She was featured on the cover of Redbook in cowboy garb as a typical Wyoming high school teen. She attended the University of Wyoming, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and was chosen to sponsor the university officers training corps. She married
Dr. Fred W. Schoonmaker of Lander on June 6, 1954, in Chandler, Ariz. They resided in Durham, N.C., and Denver until she moved back to Lander in 1994. The couple raised their family in Denver, where Mrs. Schoonmaker was active in the community. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, chairman of the Colorado Heart Fund, member of Central City Opera, Denver Lyric Opera, Denver Art Museum, and active in the Republican Party. She also was founder and chairman of the Colorado Classic Horse Show. She enjoyed gardening, painting, and was a student of architecture, literature, and politics. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jerald Morss, and a granddaughter, Kelsey Nutt. Survivors include four children, Denica Schoonmaker of Denver, Pete Schoonmaker of Sheridan, Shauna Roberts of Cody, and Annie Schoonmaker of Sheridan; and eight grandchildren. Howard Allen Carl
Former Sheridan resident Howard Allen Carl, 66, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at his residence near Gillette. A private service has taken place. Arrangements were with Walker Funeral Home in Gillette. Born April 2, 1942, in Cleveland to Howard and Eleanor (Blabol) Carl, he attended school in Cleveland. After graduation, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he obtained his electrical license and worked for Hearne Electric. He received a Master Electrician license, then owned and operated Carl’s Electric. He married
his wife, Audrey, on Jan. 4, 1980, in Fort Lauderdale. They lived in North Carolina for a short while, moving to Sheridan, where he retired from the electrical business and went to work for the Flying H Ranch as head of maintenance and construction. Mr. Carl retired in June 2008 and was in the process of moving to Gillette at the time of his death. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling in the couple’s fifth wheel, amusement parks, joking with his son-in-law, food fights, and working on and driving Corvettes. Survivors include his wife; son Howard III, daughter Gail Schwartz and his mother, all of Gillette; and two grandchildren. Kathleen Lee Willoughby Wagner
Sheridan native Kathleen Lee Willoughby Wagner, 53, of Thornton, Colo., died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008. Services will be later in Minot, N.D. Born March 5, 1955, in Sheridan to Ernest Guy Willoughby Jr. and Shirley (Sobotka) Willoughby, she spent her early years in Sheridan and attended school in Casper. She enjoyed horses and competed in equestrian events including Western pleasure and barrel racing, achieving multiple ribbons and trophies. She was known as a thoughtful person, attentive those less fortunate. Survivors include her mother, Shirley Spoden, and stepfather, William Spoden, of Northglenn, Colo.; a son, Christopher Wagner of Minot; two brothers, Marcus Bruce Willoughby of Oklahoma and James Grey Spoden of Northglenn; four aunts; four uncles; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eldon Everett ‘Ed’ Darrington
Eldon Everett “Ed” Darrington, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings from injuries sustained after a fall, according to Champion Ferries Funeral Home, which is handling arrangements. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in the church columbarium. Born June 16, 1924, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Frances Marie (Bardsley) and George Everett Darrington, he moved as a small child with his family to Crete, Neb., where he grew up and graduated from Crete High School in 1942. After completing Naval Midshipmen's School in 1944 at Columbia University in New York, he served in the US. Navy in World War II on board the heavy cruiser U.S.S. St. Paul as a turret officer and catapult officer for two years. After the war, he took summer employment at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo., fell in love with the West, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1948 from the University of Colorado in Boulder. An avid pianist and alto saxophone player, he was offered a music scholarship, but he instead earned a second bachelor's degree — this time in mathematics — in 1959 from Doane College in Crete. In 1949 he married
Ann Marie Ramsey and went to work in sales for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. His employment took him to Pueblo, Colo., Casper and finally Colorado Springs, Colo. In the early 1960s, the couple adopted two children, Eva Marie, and Allen Everett. Mr. Darrington began a 26-year career as a retail store owner and general manager for Firestone, successfully managing three full-service Firestone stores when he moved on from Colorado Springs. He married
his second wife, Marjorie Whitmire, in Maui, Hawaii, in 1978. A year later, they settled in Sheridan when he was transferred to work as manager for the Firestone Store on Coffeen Avenue. He retired in 1983. He was one of the original organizers and developers of the Sheridan Area Water Supply project and was also instrumental in building the Rotary Park at Sheridan County Fairgrounds. He recently achieved 29 years of perfect attendance at Sheridan Rotary Club. He enjoyed woodworking, photography, bowling, skiing, camping, fishing, gardening, golf, dancing, big band music, and was active in many local volunteer civic organizations such as Masonic Lodge, numerous Shrine clubs (including the nationally famous Al Kaly Shrine Mule Train), Boy Scouts of America, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, and First Presbyterian Church. He was proud of his two golf holes-in-one, including one his father witnessed at Estes Park Municipal Golf Course in Colorado. He was also proud of his military service and remained in close contact with Navy buddies through the years, attending and organizing reunions all over the country. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Jean Nelson of Grand Junction, Colo.; a son, Allen Darrington of Littleton, Colo.; a daughter, Eva Darrington of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; and three grandchildren. Robert Siegoski
Robert Siegoski, 83, of Buffalo died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Pete Johnson as celebrant. Rosary and vigil will be 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in the Elks section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in charge of military honors. Born June 24, 1925, in Monarch to Paul and Amelia Siegoski, he was educated at the Englefield School in Monarch and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1942. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served aboard ships in the Asiatic, Pacific and the Philippines theaters during World War II. He was with the occupation forces in Japan and received discharge orders in 1946. He returned to Sheridan in 1949 and worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph. He married
Helen Legerski on July 28, 1951, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan. Mr. Siegoski had numerous assignments with the telephone company throughout the state. The couple transferred to Cheyenne, then Casper, where he retired in a management position with the Casper district in 1987. In 1990, the couple moved to Buffalo. He was a member of the American Legion, the Telephone Pioneers, and was a life member of the Elks Lodge. He attended St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, woodworking and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by a stepmother; a brother, Eugene; and two brothers who died in infancy. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Roberta “Bobbi” Stricker of St. George, Utah, and Mary Boal and Patti Coonts, both of Thornton, Colo.; a sister, Theresa Markham of Denver; two stepsisters, Irene Kekich of Sheridan and Ruth Whaples of Renton, Wash.; and six grandchildren. JoAnne Panetta Wilson
Former Johnson and Sheridan County resident JoAnne Panetta Wilson, 72, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 in Tri-Cities Chaplaincy in Kennewick, Wash., according to her family.
A celebration of life was Nov. 1 in Kennewick. Born Nov. 11, 1935, to Joseph and Veronica “Fron” Panetta, she was raised in Sheridan. She attended Holy Name School, graduated from Sheridan High School in 1954, and shortly after married
Leonard Bell. She worked at Panetta Bros. food wholesale operation, then for Dr. Oscar Rojo before she found what family called “her career passion” working for Ed Niehay at KROE Radio. She went on to work for radio stations in Montana and Anchorage, Alaska, with Country KYAK, where she became the first woman advertising manager of a station over 50, 000 watts in the United States. She was later a sales rep in Seattle for soft rock KIXI. She married
William T. Wilson in 1983. They moved to the Tri-Cities area. During retirement, she enjoyed bridge, gardening, cooking, golf and was especially proud of her hole-in-one. She was a lifelong Roman Catholic. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Panetta. Survivors include her husband; her mother of Sheridan; a son, Charles of Covington, Wash.; a daughter, Cynthia Bell Stark of Anchorage; four stepchildren, Carol, Christy, Patty and Bill, all of Washington state; a sister, Judi, and brother, Joie Panetta, of Sheridan; a second sister, Joyce of Maryland; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Esther I. West
Esther I. West, 89, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, followed at 2 p.m. by graveside services with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Born June 8, 1919, in Sheridan to Elmer and Mary (Buckley) Connolly, she attended first through fourth grades in Lonesome Gulch School, fifth through eighth grades in Stone School on Piney Creek, and Big Horn High School, during which time she lived with her grandmother. She worked on the Alex Kaufman Ranch and the George Williams Ranch as a caretaker and cook. She married
Edward Kinney West on Dec. 24, 1943, in Sheridan. The couple were dairy farmers for 35 years until they retired in 1986. She cared for her aging parents, then for her grandchildren. Active with the Sheridan County Homemakers, Mrs. West enjoyed gardening, cooking, family gatherings and the many visits from her nieces and nephews during summer and holidays. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Anna Belle Weltner. Survivors include a son, John West of Sheridan; four brothers, Thomas, Dale, Pat and Robert Connolly, all of Sheridan; three sisters Evelyn Sullivan of Casper and Marietta Bickel and Florence Dahlin, both of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
