Irene Wortman
Irene Wortman, 81, Gillette, father of Patty Colvin of Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper of natural causes. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Gillette with the Rev. Cliff Jacobson officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Visitation will be 6-7 p.m. today with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. Born Feb. 11, 1927, to Harvey and Eva Rose (Berkley) Hill on the family ranch, she was raised and educated in Gopher, S.D., and graduated from high school in Isabel, S.D. She married
Maurice Red Wortman on Nov. 12, 1945, in Isabel. The couple made their first home in a sheep wagon before purchasing a ranch near Isabel, where they ranched for five years. She taught school in the Gopher area. Because of her husbands road construction work, the family moved numerous times in 10 years throughout Montana, North and South Dakota and New Mexico. In 1960, they settled in McLaughlin, S.D., where they owned and operated Wortman Trailer Park. Mrs. Wortman also worked as an aide at the community hospital. In 1978, the family moved to Gillette, where she worked for Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. She retired to take care of their grandchildren and neighborhood children, becoming known as the neighborhood grandmother. In later years, she and her husband traveled south for the winters. Mrs. Wortman was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and Council of Catholic Women and was an Avon sales lady. She enjoyed crocheting, fishing, gardening, dancing, and spending time at the Senior Center and with her family. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Clarence and Richard, and one grandson. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Dennis of Deadwood, S.D., Larry of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Robert of Dilworth, Minn.; three additional daughters, Rhonda Wortman, Susan Kramer and Gina Grimm, all of Gillette; three brothers, Lester, Jess and Ted Hill; five sisters, Loretta, Darlene, Shirley, Dorothy and Rachel; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. William B. Bennett
William B. (Bill) Bennett, 74, of Sheridan and Newcastle, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Rock port, Texas, after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be later in Sheridan. Born Nov. 5, 1933, in Sheridan to Bill and Hazel (Brandt) Bennett of Acme, he went to grade school in Acme and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952. After school, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a payroll clerk in San Diego and later in Wyoming as a reservist until 1963. While in San Diego he met Sheridan resident Jean Katherine Martini. He returned to Sheridan to work for Mountain Bell Telephone Co. in 1955, and the couple married
Jan. 23, 1960. In 1963 he moved with his wife and three sons to Newcastle, where he worked for Mountain Bell as a central office technician. A fourth son was born in Newcastle. In 1985, Mr. Bennett moved to Page, Ariz., to continue employment with U.S. West (later Qwest). He retired in December 1995 after 40 years with the telephone company. After the death of his wife in 1994, he married
Judy Rinne of Page in 1995. They moved to Marysville, Wash., in 1997. In 2003, the couple purchased a motor home and traveled until his illness in the fall of 2006. He remained in Rockport until his death. He was active in his church in both Newcastle and Page. He was coach of Little League baseball and an avid fly fisherman and bowler. He also enjoyed hunting with family and friends and was a longtime member of the Newcastle Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Page Elks Lodge and served as a city councilor for the Lake Powell Mobile Home Park. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Steven. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Green Bay, Wis., and John of Sheridan; two stepdaughters, Sheryl Lockhart of Everett, Wash., and Christy Lindstadt of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Richard Jim Bordeaux
Richard Jim Bordeaux, 76, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at Kane Funeral Home. Interment of cremains with military honors will follow in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Clifford C. Wiberg Jr.
Sheridan native Clifford Carl Cliffy Wiberg Jr., 71, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. Born Feb. 2, 1937, to Clifford Wiberg and Catherine Cunningham, he served in the Air Force and was stationed in Japan from 1955-1958. He was preceded in death by one sister, Alicia Russell. Survivors include a son, James Steven Wiberg, and 12 siblings: Arland Wiberg, Sylvia Sadler, Carol DePoorter, Catherine Joan Anich, Regina Reese, Doretta Dunham, Monica Shockey, Bridget LaMotte, Christopher Wiberg, Nelia May, Richard Wiberg and Mary Geertz.
Katherine Louise Jordan
Katherine Louise McIntire Jordan, 75, of Sheridan and Billings, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. A service is planned 11 a.m. Saturday at Cremation and Funeral Gallery in Billings. Born July 31, 1933, to Ira and Ruth McIntire, she married
Thomas R. Jordan on June 19, 1952, in Emmett, Idaho. Mrs. Jordan enjoyed cooking, parties, and any event with family, friends, great food and good conversation. She and her husband had just returned from their Bucket List trip to Idaho, where they were able to enjoy it all. They also stopped in Yellowstone Park, where they had worked for more than 25 years. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Jordan. Survivors include five children, Doug Jordan, Vicki Nyback, Cheryl Jordan, Scott Jordan and Thomas Jordan; two sisters, Shirley McCullough and Linda Swickard; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jack Lamb
Sheridan native Jack Lamb, 85, Billings, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at Powers Cottage. Services were this morning at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary in Billings. Burial was private with military honors. Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Sheridan to Adolph and Ruby Grandbouche Lamb, he grew up on a ranch in Moorcroft. His father died when he was 7, and his mother raised him and two brothers on her own. The family moved to Sheridan, then Casper, where he graduated from Natrona County High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and graduated from gunnery school in Florida. He began overseas duty May 15, 1944, and took part in D-Day. On his 37th mission, his B-17 was shot down over Germany on Sept. 13, 1944. He was a prisoner of war in a German prison camp until May 2, 1945, when he was liberated. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with three oak clusters. He met Betty Calkins in Sheridan. They were married
May 2, 1948, and raised four children. Mr. Lamb worked as an optician for Wolman Optical Co. from 1951 until he retired Dec. 31, 1988. He was a member of Yellowstone Country Club and spent many hours on the golf course, where he scored three holes-in-one. He also sponsored new golfers. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Kenny. Survivors include four children, Judy Lamb, Kasey Buehring, Sue Larson, and Jack Lamb; a brother, Marlin Lamb; and four grandchildren. August Joseph Chabot
August Joseph Gus Chabot, 97, Kaycee, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery, Buffalo, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Born Oct. 15, 1910, to Leon and Louise Chabot on the familys Powder River homestead in southern Johnson County, he grew up in the Sussex area and attended Sutton School on Powder River. He attended high school for two years in Kaycee and graduated in 1929 from Johnson County High School in Buffalo. He worked on the family ranch, eventually taking a job with the Esponda Co. herding sheep, among other ranch jobs. He owned and operated Guss Repair Shop on the ranch before joining the Army in November 1943. Mr. Chabot served in France, Belgium and Germany in 1945. He returned to Wyoming after his discharge and continued to operate the repair shop. After his fathers death, he took over the family ranch with his sisters and continued to live and work in Kaycee until his death. He served 34 years on the Sheridan-Johnson REA Board and three years on the Powder River Energy Board. He was a member of the Sheridan Johnson County Pioneer Association, Powder River Grange, Powder River Soil Conservation Service, where he served as treasurer for 18 years, and the Wyoming State Grange, where he served as treasurer for 31 years. He was a life member of VFW, American Legion and the National Rifle Association. He loved to travel and attend conventions for the boards on which he served. He owned his own plane and was an avid aviator. He was preceded in death by three sisters. He is survived by a sister, May Chabot of Kaycee; five nephews and two nieces.
Mildred M. Allen
Mildred M. Allen, 97, of Sheridan and Cheyenne died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Lakeview cemetery in Cheyenne with the Rev. Lyn King officiating. Born April 4, 1911, in Toledo, Iowa, to Wyatt Owen and Alice May (Paige) Thompson, she spent her early years in Iowa, moving to York, Neb., where she graduated from York High School in 1929. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from York College in 1934 and attended Gregg College Normal Course in Chicago, graduating in 1937. She received her Master of Arts degree in 1945 from Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. She married
Louis E. Allen on Feb. 21, 1957, in Ault, Colo. Mrs. Allen was a secretarial science instructor in high schools and colleges for more than 30 years, including 11 years at Sheridan College. She was also supervisor of clerical employment at the University of Wyoming for three years, retiring in 1970. A member of First Baptist Church in Cheyenne, she enjoyed cross-stitch, reading and spending time with her family. She was affectionately known as Bibber to her nieces and nephew. She was also known as a wonderful second mother to her stepdaughters and a loving grandmother to their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and a granddaughter. Survivors include two stepdaughters, Nancy Osterman-Rowland of Marion, Mich., and Shirley Korp of Clearmont; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew. Douglas L. Otteson
Douglas L. Otteson, 69, Sheridan, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Cremation arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Born May 3, 1939, to Carl Oscar and Helen Otteson at the family home in Steele County, N.D., he farmed in his early years. He and his wife, Mary, were married
Sept. 12, 1969, in Mayville, N.D. In 1980 he made a career move from farming to general contracting. He enjoyed woodworking, home improvement, current events and was a history buff. He was known as a dedicated and loyal husband and father. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Robyn Otteson of Owens Cross Roads, Ala., Heather Otteson of Huntsville, Ala., and Hope Otteson of La Porte, Texas; d two siblings, Selmer Otteson of Minto, N.D., and Janice Knudsvig of Clifford, N.D.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard Lee Winters
Richard Lee Winters, 91, Sheridan, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Cremation will take place. Born Oct. 7, 1916, to N.E. and Ethel Winters in College Station, Texas, he was raised in Argentina and finished high school and college in Stillwater, Okla. He married
Mary Libby Swaim on June 5, 1935. They moved to Wyoming in 1940 after graduation from Oklahoma State in agricultural engineering. Mr. Winters worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Soil Conservation Service in several Wyoming locations. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 after World War II started. The family moved in 1946 to Kalispell, Mont., where he worked on the Hungry Horse Dam. In 1952, he began a career with the foreign service building dams and irrigation projects in Chile, Haiti, Tunisia and Ecuador. In 1971, the couple retired to Big Fork, Mont., where he was active in civic affairs and the Masons. In 2001 he was elected to the Montana Masonic Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding service to many charities in the Big Fork area. He enjoyed dancing with his wife, fishing and hunting. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles. Survivors include his wife; a sister, Ann Schellack of Baton Rouge, La.; a daughter, Judy Banks of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Al Winters of Story; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Michael J. Zowada
Michael J. Zowada, 78, Sheridan, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born Jan. 13, 1930, in Dietz to Michael and Anna Mentock Zowada, he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1948 and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1951. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He married
Helen Oelschlager at Holy Name Catholic Church on June 15, 1957. He was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge and Big Horn Mountain Marine Corps League. During his younger years, he enjoyed fast-pitch softball, playing for the Sheridan Beer team. He took pride in organizing the monthly meeting of surviving members and close friends associated with the 1946 Sheridan Bronc state championship football team. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and photography. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Loren and Merlin Zowada, both of Sheridan; a brother, Edward Zowada of Sheridan; two granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eleanor L. Kilpatrick
Eleanor L. Kilpatrick, 93, Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Westview Health Care Center. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born Oct. 21, 1914, in Kooi to Thomas and Edna Hustwaite McCoy, she attended grade school at Kleenburn until the fourth grade, transferred to Sheridan, and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1932. She married
Glade Harold Kilpatrick in Hardin, Mont., on Feb. 18, 1933, and worked 30 years at the Veterans Administration hospital, retiring in 1972.
She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Elks Lodge. She enjoyed hiking in the mountains, family get-togethers, travel, crafts and ballgames. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Vivian. She is survived by two sons, Gerald G. Kilpatrick of Sedona, Ariz., and Dr. Richard L. Kilpatrick of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Wesley A. Steele
Wesley Albert Steele, 84, Gillette, father of Mickey Bradshaw of Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, S.D., with Pastor Howie Baird officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis. Born March 29, 1924, at Kyle, S.D., to Carl and Minnie (Slea) Steele, he finished schooling and moved to Wessington Springs, S.D., where he worked in farming and ranching. He joined the U.S. Navy, and after his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Wessington Springs to farm and ranch. He married
Edna (Fieldes) OBanion, and they moved to Nebraska to ranch. They then moved to Oregon, where Mr. Steele was employed as a block layer. He returned to South Dakota in the early 60s and worked in Eagle Butte and Rapid City in construction. He married
Beverly Jean (Anderson) Dupris at Stephan, S.D., on July 29, 1961. They lived in the Rapid City area until the mid-70s, when they moved to Wyoming. In the early 90s they moved to Vacaville, Calif., and later to Reno, Nev., until returning to Wyoming in 1993. Mr. Steele was involved in building missile silos and interstate road construction as well as commercial and residential construction throughout his career. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Nyla and Pamela; a son, William; four brothers, Lesley, Leo, Tommy, and William "Ole"; and a sister, Kathryn "Dolly" Colwell. Survivors include four sons Robert, Wesley and Thomas Steele, all of Rapid City, and Kenneth Steele, Gillette; three additional daughters, Sheila Steele and Patsy Guettler, both of Gillette, and Sherry Tuttle, Adrian, Mich.; one brother, Charles "Buddy" Steele, Rapid City; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
James Charles Vines
James Charles Vines, 88, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Heri-tage Assisted Living in Twin Falls, Idaho. He was brother of June Warren and Bill Eisele, both of Sheridan. Born Feb. 24, 1920, in Gillette to James L. and Mattie Davis Vines, he grew up on a ranch and graduated from Gillette High School. He joined the Navy at age 17 and served in World War II, mostly on the East Coast and in the Atlantic Theater. He married
Marian McKenzie, and they divorced. He married
Jean Kendrick Jones in Reno, Nev., in 1972. They enjoyed traveling in their recreational vehicle to Arizona during winters and to other places of interest. Mr. Vines was a member of Mount Rose Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite in Reno and past patron of Nevada Chapter 13 Eastern Star. He also was past secretary of Buhl (Idaho) Kiwanis Club and Buhl Shrine Club. He belonged to Clear Lake Country Club and golfed until ill health forced his retirement. He loved gardening and sold vegetables to a Twin Falls farmers market. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale; a brother; and a stepson, Denny Jones. Survivors include his wife of Buhl; a son, Russell of New York; a daughter, Sandra McKay of Washington; a second sister, Nellie Watson; two additional brothers, Allen and Jean Eisele; three grandsons; four step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Farmer Funeral Chapel in Buhl with burial in West End cemetery. Donations may benefit Shiner's Hospital.
Russell M. Maxwell
Russell Martin Maxwell, 60, Cheyenne, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, in Buffalo. He was father of Russell Martin Marty Maxwell Jr. and brother of Marci Buckley, both of Sheridan. Mass was celebrated this morning in Buffalo with burial there in Willow Grove cemetery. Born Aug. 16, 1948, in Buffalo to Vernon Whitey and Jeanette Maxwell, he attended Johnson County High School and South Dakota State University in Brookings. He also taught engineering classes at SDSU. Mr. Maxwell worked 27 years as a communications specialist with Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne. He loved the mountains, hiking, fishing, and reading. A brother, Danny Maxwell, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a second son, Seth Adam Maxwell of Cheyenne; seven additional sisters, Mary Kay Stafford, Marilyn Maxwell, and Marti Markovsky, all of Buffalo, Monica Smithers of Arnold, Calif., Margo Trevino of Tracy, Calif., Melani Cole of Springfield, Mo., and Michele Peck of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two brothers, David Maxwell of Baltic, S.D., and Tom Maxwell of Beach, N.D.
