John Edward Cross

Memorial services for John Edward Cross, 54, of Story will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Viewing will be 3-8 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Cross died April 24, 2008, in an accident. Cremation has taken place. He was born Dec. 10, 1953, in Sheridan to John and Betty Cross. He attended schools in Wyoming and Montana and graduated in 1972 from Colstrip (Mont.) High School. He worked as a high-tech mechanic, shop mechanic, construction mechanic and, for the last 10 years, as a mechanic in the coal-bed methane fields, mostly in Sheridan and Campbell counties. He graduated in 1986 from aviation mechanic's school in Denver. He was a fourth-generation Wyomingite and enjoyed outdoor activities including camping and four-wheeling. Survivors include his mother of Story; a daughter, Courtney Cross of Sheridan; and a brother, Michael of Story.

Ida J. Umphenour

Memorial services for Ida J. Umphenour, 95, of Big Horn will be later in Springfield, Ore. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Umphenour died April 25, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Beverly, Neb., to William J. and Hanna (Dorn) Alberts. She grew up and attended schools in Beverly. She was confirmed into Our Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ash Grove, Neb., on June 27, 1926. She married Donald W. Umphenour on Dec. 14, 1931, near Ash Grove on the family farm. They moved to Springfield in 1932. Mr. Umphenour owned and operated a barber shop there until 1986, when he died. Mrs. Umphenour worked at the Eugene Cannery until her retirement. She was a 4-H leader for many years and enjoyed travel and growing vegetables and flowers. She moved to Big Horn in 2004 to be near her daughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Herman; a half brother, George Sanders; two half sisters, Marie Janssen and Idella Mart; and a granddaughter. Survivors include two daughters, Julie Flanagan of Big Horn and Sandra Sanders of Florida; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Carma Campbell Kostenbauer

BUFFALO - Carma Campbell Kostenbauer, 94, of Buffalo died April 26, 2008, in Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Willow Grove cemetery with the Rev. Russ Murphy officiating. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Senior Center in care of the funeral home at 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Edith Carder Sherman

Edith Carder Sherman, 91, of Sheridan died April 25, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

John Edward Cross II

John Edward Cross II, 54, of Story died April 24, 2008, in Sheridan in a vehicle accident. Cremation will take place under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Viewing will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Memorials may be made to Courtney Cross' College Fund in care of Sheridan Community Federal Credit Union, 141 S. Gould St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Jake Zier

Jake Zier, 76, of Hardin, Mont., died April 22, 2008 in Hardin. He was father of Randy Zier of Sheridan and Roger Zier of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Bullis Funeral Chapel in Hardin. Burial with military honors will be in Hardin Fairview cemetery. Mr. Zier was born Jan. 4, 1932, in Hardin to Henry and Katherine Kern Zier. He grew up and was educated in the Hardin area. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Big Horn County, Mont. He farmed in the Garryowen area for 16 years before beginning a career as maintenance man for the county. He retired in 1994 after 14 years of service. He married Hazel Faught on Sept. 6, 1964, in Lodge Grass, Mont. The couple resided in Hardin. Mr. Zier enjoyed riding horses, playing cards, word searches and puzzles, family gatherings on holidays and special occasions, and visiting with his sons. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Doris Sheldon, Betty Findley, Janet Colden and Millie Nelson; and four brothers, Bobby, Roy, Wilbur and Henry Zier Jr. In addition to his sons, survivors include his wife; three sisters, Margaret Howe, Marilyn Peterson and Shirley Cathy; a brother, Ron; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William Bradford DeMond

William Bradford DeMond, 86, of Sheridan died April 18, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. A memorial service will be later, and family members will scatter his cremains on Mount Oberlin in Montana's Glacier National Park. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Dr. DeMond was born July 7, 1921, in Greenfield, Mass., to Charles Harrison and Marion (Avery) Demond. He grew up and attended schools in Greenfield and graduated from the Deerfield Academy, Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. (He later changed his name to use an upper-case M.) He served in the Air Force from 1947-50 and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. After service, he practiced internal medicine for 40 years at Kaiser Permanente and, later, Sheridan VA Medical Center. He married Margaret Virginia Weber on June 9, 1949, in Denver. He was an avid reader with special interest in American history. Survivors include his wife, one son, three daughters and five grandchildren.

Richard Reginald `Smiley' Peters

BUFFALO - Richard Reginald Smiley Peters, 71, of Buffalo died April 20, 2008, in Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Kirk Peters officiating. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Memorials may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Walter W. Ventling

BUFFALO - Former Buffalo resident Walter W. Ventling, 99, of Billings died April 20, 2008, in Valley Health Care in Billings. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at New Life Assembly of God Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Alan Schaberg officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Memorials may be made to New Life Assembly of God Church or Gideon's International in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Willard Grover Hamer

BUFFALO - Willard Grover Hamer, 88, of Buffalo died April 20, 2008, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery following services. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Animal Shelter in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Melinda Kaye Pitsch

Sheridan native Melinda Kaye Pitsch, 45, of Buffalo died in her sleep April 19, 2008, of natural causes. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Duane Simonson officiating. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Pitsch was born Nov. 26, 1962, in Sheridan to Curt and Muffy Pitsch. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan and confirmed at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Buffalo. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1981. She enjoyed working with animals and was active in FFA and 4-H judging. As an adult, she worked for Oftedal Construction. She was engaged to Mark Glatter at the time of her death. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeff. Survivors include two sons, Dustin and Spencer Fry; her parents; three sisters, Wendy Benade, Teri Thaemert and Shelly Poirot; and her grandmother Helen Lusher. Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund for her sons in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Yvonne Louise Aggers

Funeral liturgy for Yvonne Louise Aggers, 81, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Ogg as celebrant. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery following services Thursday. Mrs. Aggers died April 18, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born July 28, 1926, in Miles City, Mont., to Alphons and Gladys (Welch) Schaut. She grew up and attended schools in Miles City and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1944. She married John Aggers on May 18, 1946, in Miles City. They lived in Miles City, Anaconda, Mont., and Billings before moving to Sheridan in 1956. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Elks Auxiliary, past member of the Jaycees, and a former stockholder in the Golden Steer restaurant. She enjoyed bowling, camping, gardening and working in her yard, and the company of her dog, Abby. She also enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993, three sisters and one brother. Survivors include two sons, Allan of Bartlesville, Okla., and Gordon of Sheridan; three daughters, Annette Rockas and Julie Kennedy, both of Sheridan, and Cindy Larson of Billings; two sisters, Dorothy Madson of Sheridan and Carol Schaut of Seattle; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, or Holy Name Church Building Fund, 260 E. Loucks St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Ted W. Buckley

Memorial services for Ted W. Buckley, 69, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Meyer officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Buckley died April 17, 2008, at his residence. He was born March 23, 1939, in Sheridan to John and Jennie (Green) Buckley. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 until 1981, then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years until retiring in 2001. He held various positions in the postal workers' union. He married Peggy MacCatherine on Dec. 23, 1961. He enjoyed shopping on e-Bay and attending garage sales and auctions. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Shannon Hugs and Kelley Buckley; a sister, Pat Chappell; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kalif Shriners Hospital Travel Fund, 145 W. Works St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Hanna Sian Lee

Hanna Sian Lee, 16-month-old daughter of Zemin and Candida R. (Burgess) Lee, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at her family's home in Casper. She was great-granddaughter of Virginia Burgess and Paul and Ginger Lacek, all of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Highland Park Community Church. Viewing will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Bustard's Funeral Home in Casper. Burial will be in Highland cemetery. Hanna enjoyed reading books, dancing, talking on the telephone and tigers. Other survivors include maternal grandparents, Jim and Pattie Burgess of Midwest; and paternal grandparents, Seounghee Lee and Hyaunhee Cho, and great-grandparents, Youngae Lee and Hunnim Yim, all of Incheon, South Korea.

Esther L. `Mitch' Norris

Esther L. Mitch Norris, 70, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 10, 2008. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned, according to her family. Mrs. Norris was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Lawrenceville, Ill., to Lucille and Charles Byrley. She moved to Sheridan in 1995 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Chris McEdward, and three sons, Rick DeTar, Rex Davenport and Jay Thompson, all of Sheridan; a sister, Wanda Amos of Jay, Okla.; two brothers, Jim Byrley of Afton, Okla., and Larry Byrley of Mounds, Okla.; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Harry D. Cohn

Harry D. Cohn, 80, of Powell died April 6, 2008, in Powell Valley Hospital of natural causes. He was brother of Hanley Cohn of Sheridan. Memorial services were April 11 in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Cody. Arrangements were with Thompson Funeral Home. Mr. Cohn was born Aug. 28, 1927, to Pearl and Hanley Cohn. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service as an assistant engineer for 35 years. He was transferred to the SCS in Powell in 1970. A member of Jehovah's Witnesses, he served as an elder in the Sheridan and Powell areas. He enjoyed the outdoors, carpentry, and playing golf. Other survivors include his wife, Jane L. (Cline) Cohn; two daughters, Barbara and Deborah; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
