Juanita Burrows
Funeral services for Juanita Burrows, 81, of Sheridan, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Burrows died March 6, 2008, in Lakewood, Colo. She was born Aug. 20, 1926, to Henry and Pearl (Nickols) Wheeler on the family homestead near Kim, Colo. She grew up and attended schools in southeastern Colorado. She married
Floyd Burrows on May 5, 1945, in Pritchett, Colo. The family lived in Las Animas, Colo., until 1956, when it moved to Sheridan. Mrs. Burrows worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney for 19 years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Burrows died April 19, 1992. Mrs. Burrows was a member of First Baptist Church in Sheridan. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Max. Survivors include two sons, Wayne of Thermopolis and Curtis of Sheridan; a daughter, Debbie Davis of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, Ray Wheeler of Salida, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.
Lydia Miller
Former Sheridan resident Lydia Miller, 80, of Casper died Feb. 26, 2008, in Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. Memorial services were this morning at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Arrangements are with Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper. Miss Miller was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Hysham, Mont., to Jacob and Katherine (Zier) Miller. She was a 1935 graduate of Sheridan High School and a 1939 graduate of Eastern Montana Normal School. She taught five years in a one-room school in Montana, then worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union for 30 years. After retiring, she returned to Sheridan. She moved to Casper in 1999. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she enjoyed writing letters, reading, gardening and sewing. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, Jack, Buck, George and Fred; and four sisters, Kate Marker, Mary Smith, Maybelle Martin and Edith Dvorak. Viola Harrington `Vi' Duncan
Lifelong Buffalo resident Viola Harrington Vi Duncan, 92, died Feb. 26, 2008, in Johnson County Health Care Center. She was the mother of Dennis Duncan of Sheridan. Private burial services are planned this summer. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Mrs. Duncan was born July 30, 1915, in Buffalo to Fred and Elsie Hepp Gray. She attended schools in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1931. After high school she worked at various jobs in Buffalo. She married
Lee Duncan. They were divorced. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Survivors include another son, Gary Duncan of Buffalo; two sisters, Lola Pheasant of Buffalo and Edith Hibbard of Midland, Texas; one brother, Fred Gray of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Sam Harry Mavrakis
Sam Harry Mavrakis, 89, lifelong resident of Sheridan, died March 6, 2008, at the family residence of natural causes. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Revs. Doug Melius and Brian Johnson of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery, followed by a reception luncheon at Lodore in Story. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Mavrakis was born June 18, 1918, in Monarch to Greek-immigrant parents Harry and Georgia Mavrakis. The family later moved to Sheridan, where Harry Mavrakis opened two nightclubs and, later, Bronx Billiards on North Main Street. Sam Mavrakis was a January 1937 graduate of Sheridan High School, where he played football, lettering for three years. He was an All-State selection as guard and was a Broncs Outstanding Player, Most Valuable Player and Honorary Captain. He attended Brigham Young University on a football scholarship and played four years of varsity football as guard. He was BYU All-American in 1941. He also was a member of the BYU varsity wrestling team for two years, losing only one match. He was inducted into the Army in January 1942, serving in the coast artillery and the Pacific Theater. He was a staff sergeant with the 6th Army's 211th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, Battery B, commanding four gun crews. He was in battles in the Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea, the South Philippines and the invasion of the Philippines. He received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater of Operations Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and bronze arrowhead, the World War II Victory Medal with bronze star, and the Philippine Defense Ribbon and Medal with two bronze stars. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. After returning to Sheridan, Mr. Mavrakis helped his father and brothers open The Ritz Billiards at 135 N. Main St. He married
Goldie Mae Williams in 1953. She died in 1980, and he married
Lynn Borg Burnham in Sheridan in 1990. The Ritz became a sporting goods store, and Mr. Mavrakis received numerous recognitions and awards, including a commission as deputy game warden for Wyoming, the American Association of Conservation Information Award of Merit, and letters of commendation from U.S. Sens. Al Simpson and Malcolm Wallop for lifetime contributions to the Sheridan area and the state. Gov. Mike Sullivan declared June 16, 1988, Sam Mavrakis Day in Wyoming, citing Mr. Mavrakis' lifetime dedication to Wyoming and Sheridan citizens and the natural environment. The Sheridan City Council approved development of the Sam Mavrakis Fishing Pond in 1993, and Mr. Mavrakis was inducted into the 2006 Wyoming Outdoor Hall of Fame in September that year. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Gus. Survivors include his wife; a son, Sam Paul of Banner; a daughter, Tami of Story; two stepsons, Stuart Burnham of Wilmington, N.C., and Chris Burnham of Chicago; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Wyoming State Game & Fish Foundation, Sheridan Senior Citizens Center Day Break program, Sheridan Recreation District, Hospice of the Big Horns, or a recipient of the donor's choice.
Alice J. Carnes
Lifelong Sheridan resident Alice J. Carnes, 78, died March 6, 2008, at her residence. Viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Arthur Maendl officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Big Horn. She married
Richard Carnes in 1947. She was a distributor of the Denver Post in the 1940s and early 1950s, taught Sunday school at the Open Bible Church, and was a Brownie Scout leader. She and her husband started the first motorcycle club in Sheridan in the 1950s. The couple built their home together, owned and operated two gas stations and built Carnes' Auto Repair on Broadway. They also operated Ideal Cleaners for 12 years. Mrs. Carnes cleaned doctors' clinics and other offices, sold Watkins Products for more than 40 years, was a bookkeeper, clerk and seamstress, raised beef, and was an in-home caregiver. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth R. of Glenrock and Troy of Sheridan; a daughter, Ginger Wallace of Sheridan; three sisters, Margaret Kathleen Dahle of Colorado, Mary Gallagher of Oregon, and Edith Carnes of California; a brother, Roger Krout of Sheridan; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Sally Witzel
A memorial service for Sally Witzel, 76, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Revs. David Duprey and John Meyer officiating. Mrs. Witzel's ashes will be placed in the columbarium of St. Peter's Memorial Chapel immediately following the service. A public reception hosted by the Women of St. Peter's will follow. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Witzel died March 4, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. She was born June 15, 1931, in Pasadena, Calif. The family moved to Wyoming when she was a child. She received her early education in a one-room schoolhouse, then attended The Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. She graduated in 1954 from the University of Wyoming as a member of UW's first nursing class. She became a Registered Nurse in August 1954. She married
Noel Justin Hicks on Jan. 4, 1957, in Boston. They were divorced. She married
Erwin F. "Curley" Witzel on Aug. 18, 1966, in Sheridan. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Witzel trained horses and enjoyed riding, rodeo, swimming, photography and skiing. She studied art and music and became a master gardener. In 1994, she made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and enjoyed tending the church's gardens. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, John. Survivors include a brother, John Merriman of Little River, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Howie Arena of Genoa, Italy. The family has asked that Mrs. Witzel's friends give flowers to each other and to her loved ones in her name.
Anton Lecholat
Anton Lecholat, 88, of Sheridan died March 4, 2008. A gathering for family and friends will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Lincoln (Neb.) Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lincoln with burial in Lincoln Memorial Park. Mr. Lecholat was born July 21, 1919, in Zastonyi, Ukraine, to Pavlo Bochno and Paroskevya Lecholat. He and his wife, Rosa, immigrated to Lincoln from Austria in 1952. A charter member of St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church, he was a lifelong jeweler and watch repairman, working for Steven's Jewelry from 1957 to 1973, Kaufman's Jewelry from 1973-1980, and City Clock until 1982, when he retired. He was preceded in death by his wife. Survivors include a son, Peter of Sheridan; a stepson, W.J. of Lincoln; three sisters, Eva, Anastazja and Paroskevya, all of Crimea, Ukraine; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Ralph David `Buddy' Streeter
BUFFALO - Buffalo native Ralph David Buddy Streeter, 63, of Sundance died March 1, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Friday and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private burial is in Kaycee cemetery. Mr. Streeter lived several years in Kaycee. John Arzy
Funeral service for John Arzy, 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Arzy died Feb. 29, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 13, 1922, to Joseph and Mary Agnes (Selig) Arzy on the family homestead northeast of Sheridan. He grew up on the ranch, attended Wagner School and graduated from Sheridan High School. He worked for Leo Petrie before working for Green Heating/Orr Plumbing for 27 years. He later worked for Roush Plumbing and Zowada Plumbing until 1983, when he retired. He married
Mamie Tyler on Feb. 18, 1978, in Sheridan. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia; two brothers, Joe and Bill; and a sister, Albenia Wolfe. Survivors include his wife; a stepson, Michael Carnley of Sheridan; two brothers, Ray and George, both of Sheridan; three sisters, Nellie Wolfe of Waskom, Texas, Francis Miech of Sheridan, and Florence Young of Decker, Mont.; and two step-grandchildren. Ronald Edward Manseau
Former Sheridan resident Ronald Edward Manseau, 64, of Hobbs, N.M., died Feb. 27, 2008, in Hobbs. Funeral services were this morning at First Christian Church in Hobbs. Arrangements were with May Funeral Home. Mr. Manseau was born March 27, 1943, in Deadwood, S.D., to Edward and Corrine Manseau. He married
Linda Chism on Aug. 24, 1968, in Northside Baptist Church in Hobbs. He was a graduate of Western New Mexico University in Silver City. He was a stockbroker for Dean Witter in Sheridan from 1981-90, when the family moved to Hobbs and started a NAPA store. They sold the store in 1997, and Mr. Manseau returned to being a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch and, later, Edward Jones. He was a member of the Hobbs Shriners, Hobbs Masonic Lodge 63, Hobbs Rotary Club and Hobbs Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. He enjoyed golf, camping, travel and hunting pheasants. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark of Hobbs and John of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Katy of Boulder, Colo.; and four grandchildren. Loy B. Finley
Former Arvada resident Loy B. Finley, 77, of Florida and Washington state died Jan. 23, 2008, at the Little Rock (Ark.) Air Force Base while visiting his grandson. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Mr. Finley was born March 29, 1930, in Buffalo to Claude and Bessie Finley. He grew up and attended school in Arvada, until he moved to Billings to attend high school. He later worked on ranches in that area and competed in rodeos as a roper and saddle bronc rider. He married
Beulah Blakeman on May 30, 1950. They made their home in Quietus and, later, St. Ignatius, Mont. They later bought the Mound Ranch in Clinton, British Columbia, Canada. They moved to Hot Springs, Mont., in 1973. He was a member of the Ropers Club in Clinton. After Mrs. Finley died in 2000, Mr. Finley alternated his time between Morriston, Fla., and Davenport, Wash., where he lived with two of his children. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Claudia, and a son, James Robert. Survivors include two sons, Casey and Patrick, both of Davenport; one daughter, Claudia Ortiz of Morriston; a brother, Ray of St. Ignatius; a sister, Wanda Blakeman of Hot Springs; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Charles D. Maggard
BUFFALO - Buffalo native Charles D. Maggard, 72, of Tulsa, Okla., died Feb. 29, 2008, in Tulsa. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church in Tulsa. Bernice G. Kinter
Funeral services for Bernice G. Kinter, 92, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kinter died Feb. 27, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. She was born June 18, 1915, in Davenport, Iowa, to Christian F. and Anna B. (Kostal) Gosch. The family moved to Great Falls, Mont., by covered wagon when she was 5. The family moved to Sheridan when she was 7, and she lived in this area for the rest of her life. She married
Fredrick Charles Kinter on Jan. 25, 1932, in Hardin, Mont. She was past president of Navy Mothers and a member of Eagles Auxiliary and Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking and baking, canning, spending time with her family, and travel. She was preceded in death by her husband and three children, Barbara Ann Schaffer, Alfred W. Kinter and Mary Janice Kinter. Survivors include a son, Christian F. of Cynthiana, Ky.; eight daughters, Karen Hans, Judy Kinter and Bernice DeLapp, all of Sheridan, Peggy Marker of Loveland, Colo., Norma Kinter of Tacoma, Wash., Evelyn Meyer of Skagway, Alaska, Georgia Manuel of Baxley, Ga., and Anna Bassett of Fort Collins, Colo.; three brothers, George Gosch of Flagstaff, Ariz., Chris Gosch of Florida, and William Gosch of Sheridan; a sister, Mary Ann Pitch of Hardin; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Edith Carder Sherman
Funeral Mass for Edith Carder Sherman, 91, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Sherman died April 25, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born July 9, 1916, in Philadelphia. She married
Milton C. Sherman on July 27, 1940. They moved to Florida, where Mr. Sherman developed a precision aluminum manufacturing business. He retired, and they moved to Sheridan in 1964. Mrs. Sherman was a member of the Catholic Church and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and being with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Rita Deur. Survivors include two sons, Tom of Wyandotte, Mich., and Mike of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Jenny Louise Rollins
Sheridan native Jenny Louise Rollins, 76, of Phoenix died April 22, 2008, in a Phoenix hospital. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Funeral Chapel in Peoria, Ariz. Mrs. Rollins was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Sheridan to Gothard and Evelyn (Ely) Bylund. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1949. She worked as a stewardess for American Airlines, secretary for the Phoenix Union High School District, and as a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed travel, including trips to Laughlin, Nev., and Sheridan in the summer to be with family and friends. She also enjoyed shopping sprees, sharing chocolate and pastries, reading and following Wyoming Cowboys football and basketball. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Melisse Jeanne Grey and Donna Lee Rawlings. Survivors include her husband, Carl; a son, Scott R.; and two sisters, Evelyn E. Griesser of Tucson, Ariz., and Mary N. Taliaferro of Castle Rock, Colo.
Birdie E. `Betty' Scott
Birdie E. Betty Scott, 83, of Laramie died April 26, 2008, at her residence. She was stepmother of Penny Goodman of Sheridan. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Green Hill cemetery in Laramie under direction of Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home, Crematory & Monuments. Mrs. Scott was born July 13, 1924, in Newark, Ark., to Allen and Hattie (Adams) Whitfield. She grew up on the family farm near Norfork, Ark., and attended schools in Norfork. She moved to Laramie in 1947. She worked for the Richard family and the Ranger Motel. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening. She was a longtime member of Women of the Moose. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Scott, and a daughter, Betty Green. In addition to her stepdaughter, survivors include two stepsons, Keith Scott of Wellington, Colo., and David Scott of California; five sisters, Oneida Stevens and Wilma Huff, both of Norfork, Helen Hathaway of Indiana, Bobbie Sanders of Calico Rock, Ark., and Norma Speak of New Cambria, Mo.; three brothers, Roe Whitfield of Norfork, Levi Whitfield of Saratoga, N.Y., and Dean Whitfield of Brumley, Mo.; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
