Carol L. Hamilton
Carol L. Hamilton, 81, of Sheridan died March 13, 2008, in Sheridan Manor after a long illness. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Hamilton was born Oct. 23, 1926, in Alpina, S.D., to Lester and Anna Hamilton. She married
William Hamilton in Oelrichs, S.D. She worked as a licensed beautician for many years. She enjoyed raising Pomeranian dogs, crocheting, crafts and being with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, five sisters and one grandchild. Survivors include a daughter, Barb Dugan of Clearmont; three sons, Dale of Sheridan, Dave of Superior, Colo., and Larry of Buffalo; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Jordon Kas Miller
Memorial services for Jordon Kas Miller, 3, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Keller officiating. He died March 16, 2008, in the Emergency Room of Sheridan Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained in an accident at his home. He was born Sept. 2, 2004, in Sheridan to Jared and Ayla (Bolinger) Miller. He attended Myers Roundup day care center. Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Natalie Traphagan of Sheridan and Shelby Grayce Denison of Grand Junction, Colo.; his grandparents, Matt and Debbie Miller and Sam and Susan Bolinger; and great-grandparents Carolyn Bakotich, William Roush and Georgia Andreason.
Arlene L. Tannehill
Arlene L. Tannehill, 91, Sheridan, died March 14, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home, the Rev. Ken Doolin officiating, with burial in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born Feb. 26, 1917, near Wolf Point, Mont., to J.W. and Alice Riddle, she married
Donald Tannehill. The couple moved to Sheridan in 1949 and became part owners of KWYO Radio, which later became Cloud Peak Radio and Television Corp. They helped pioneer cable television in northern Wyoming. The Tannehills were active in First Baptist Church of Sheridan, All-American Indian Days, the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, and Powder River Navy. Mr. Tannehill died in 1979. Survivors include two children, Larry J. Tannehill of Sheridan and Kay A. Christy of Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Raymond Eugene Stafford
BUFFALO - Former Big Horn Coal supervisor Raymond Eugene Stafford, 86, of Buffalo died March 16, 2008, at his residence. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Bob McHenry officiating. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Services will be followed by military graveside rites at Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Mr. Stafford was a supervisor at Big Horn Coal until 1987, when he retired. Memorials may be made to Wesleyan Building Fund or Buffalo Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
Robert V. Fisk
Robert V. Fisk, 40, of Columbus, Mont., died March 4, 2008, in Columbus. He was son of Cliff and Annita Fisk and brother of Pauline Fisk, all of Sheridan. Funeral services were March 8 in Smith Funeral Chapel-Columbus. Mr. Fisk was born Sept. 15, 1967, in Lander. He grew up in the mountains around Dubois. He married
Jennifer Cathey on July 26, 1991, in Sheridan. Mr. Fisk had worked as an underground miner at the Stillwater Mine for 14 years at the time of his death. He enjoyed welding and woodworking. In addition to his parents and sister, survivors include his wife; a son, Casey Unger of Hanna; a daughter, Mikala Cofer of Wheatland; two other sisters, Joy Thompson of Green River and Christina Fisk of Park City, Mont.; and his grandmother, Marie Lamb of Casper.
William Morgan
William Morgan, 73, Arvada, died March 14, 2008, at his home. Services will be this summer with arrangements by Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born May 5, 1934, in Butler, Ohio, to Kinsey and Elizabeth (Sutton) Morgan, he grew up and attended schools in Ohio. He moved to Clearmont as a young man and worked on ranches, including the OW. He served in the Army in the Korean War. Afterward, he returned to Ohio and married
Shirley Miller on June 9, 1956, in Angola, Ind. Mr. Morgan worked construction, and the couple ran a dairy farm. In 1968 they moved to the Big Horn area, where he worked on ranches. He later worked for construction companies including Kiewit. In the late 1970s, he worked in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf region supervising pipeline construction. He returned to the United States and worked for several construction companies before moving to Arvada in 1999. He was working for B&G Roustabouts at the time of his death. He enjoyed gardening and his family and friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Hoeflich and Phyllis Divelbiss; and two grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of Englewood, Fla.; four sons, Daniel of Gillette, Edward of Ashland, Mont., Butch of Clarkesville, Ga., and Christopher of Kentucky; two daughters, Kathryn Daly of Banner and Karen Morgan of Dallas; a brother, Roger Morgan of Butler; three sisters, Ruth Forbes of Ohio, Mary Kusser of Sandusky, Ohio, and Jean Bildsten of Dunnellon, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Lydia Miller
Former Sheridan resident Lydia Miller, 90, of Casper died Feb. 26, 2008, in Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. Memorial services were this morning at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Arrangements are with Bustard's Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper. Miss Miller was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Hysham, Mont., to Jacob and Katherine (Zier) Miller. She was a 1935 graduate of Sheridan High School and a 1939 graduate of Eastern Montana Normal School. She taught five years in a one-room school in Montana, then worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union for 30 years. After retiring, she returned to Sheridan. She moved to Casper in 1999. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she enjoyed writing letters, reading, gardening and sewing. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, Jack, Buck, George and Fred; and four sisters, Kate Marker, Mary Smith, Maybelle Martin and Edith Dvorak. Eileen V. Browning
Former Story resident Eileen V. Browning, 81, of Whiting, N.J., died March 13, 2008, in Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J. Burial of cremains will be later in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Browning was born in New York City and lived in Pennsauken, N.J., before moving to Story. She moved to Whiting in 2002. She graduated from Cooper Hospital of Nursing in Camden, N.J., as a registered nurse and served in the Cadet Nursing Corps during World War II. She retired as a registered nurse from Cooper Medical Center in Camden in 1974. She was a 30-year volunteer for the Red Cross of New Jersey and a volunteer emergency medical technician in Wyoming. She and her husband, Dr. William J. Browning, were instrumental in starting Hospice of the Big Horns, according to her family. Dr. Browning died in 2001. Survivors include a son, W. Lawrence of Forked River, N.J.; a daughter, Lyn Dubeck of Bala-Cynwyd, Pa.; a brother, John McColdrick of Starr, Idaho; and three grandchildren. Allegra Jane `Tig' Skurok
Sheridan native Allegra Jane Tig Skurok, 84, of Buffalo died March 15, 2008, in her home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Jon Orwig officiating. Private burial will follow the funeral. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Skurok was born April 23, 1923, in Sheridan to John and Docie Schoolcraft. She grew up and attended schools here, graduating in 1942 from Sheridan High School. She married
Andy Skurok on Dec. 23, 1943, in Hardin, Mont. They resided in Buffalo. Mrs. Skurok was a clerk at the J.C. Penney store, Hesteds Five and Dime Store, and the New York Store. She also worked several years for the Buffalo Bulletin before retiring in 1999. Mr. Skurok died in June 1997. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church and the Friday afternoon lunch club. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Vanderhoef; three sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include a son, Ron of Mills; a daughter, Susi Skurok of Buffalo; two sisters, Mildred McDaniel of Green Valley, Ariz., and Reba Busk of Billings; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Lucile Blevins Shreve
Former Sheridan resident Lucile Blevins Shreve, 84, of Sparks, Nev., died March 4, 2008, in Sparks. A memorial service will be 1-3 p.m. April 12 at the home of her daughter, 270 Virgil Drive in Sparks. Mrs. Shreve was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Sheridan to Clefton and Clara (Patton) Blevins. The family moved to Decker, Mont., when she was 3 years old and homesteaded on the Tongue River on the Wyoming/Montana border. She attended Squirrel Creek School through the eighth grade, then attended Sheridan High School. She married
Ralph "Gene" Shreve in 1941. She worked as an operator with Bell Telephone Co. in Sheridan until 1963, when the family moved to Sparks. She transferred to Nevada Bell until she retired. She and Mr. Shreve owned and operated the Nic Nac Shelf Ceramic Shop in Sparks, where she was an instructor. In later years, the Shreves spent their winters in San Carlos, Mexico, and their summers at Eagle Lake in California. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Randy; a daughter, Sheila; and two half sisters. Survivors include two sons, Ralph "Gene" Jr. of Yuma, Ariz., and Gary of Hereford, Ariz.; two daughters, Sande Bryant of Woodstock, Ga., and Sherry Shreve of Sparks; two sisters, Josephine Schreibeis and June Gilkison, both of Sheridan; a brother, Robert Blevins of Sheridan; two sisters, Virginia Brosius of Lovell and Pat Rudolph of Gillette; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Sidney A. DeWitt
Memorial services for Sidney A. DeWitt, 90, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Cedarhome Baptist Church cemetery in Stanwood, Wash. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. DeWitt died March 11, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 30, 1918, in Heron Lake, Minn., to Elton and Nettie (Wallace) DeWitt. The family moved to the Hulett area when he was a child, and he grew up and attended schools there. He was a 1939 graduate of Hulett High School. He joined the Marines on June 9, 1941, and served in the Pacific Theater including New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Redova, New Georgie, the Russell Islands, Guam and Pearl Harbor during World War II. He was honorably discharged Sept. 17, 1945, with the rank of corporal. He was involved in training Navajo Indians as Code Talkers during the war. He married
Dorothy May Sams on Jan. 25, 1945, in Rapid City. After his military discharge, the family moved to Stanwood, where he was a maintenance man and, later, electrician. He eventually owned and operated his own business. Mrs. DeWitt died Aug. 19, 1983. Mr. DeWitt moved to the Recluse area in 1984. He worked on a ranch and delivered mail there before moving to Sheridan. He was a member of Cedarhome Baptist Church and attended First Christian Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and crossword puzzles. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son. Survivors include two daughters, Jayne of Bellingham, Wash., and Sharon of Lynnwood, Wash.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Vision Beyond Borders, P.O. Mary P. Nelson
Funeral services for Mary P. Nelson, 79, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Nelson died March 7, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born July 13, 1928, in Dry Creek to Yadvika Legoski. She married
Virgil Nelson in 1949 in Sheridan. She was a 4-H leader for 40 years and a member of the Big Goose Woman's Club and Big Goose Homemakers. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, cooking and attending Concerts in the Park. She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings Mike, Joe, George, Paul, Johnny, Andy and Agnes Legoski. Survivors include two sons, Dennis and David, and a daughter, Linda Holwell, all of Sheridan; and seven grandchildren. Mary Finley
No services are planned for Mary Finley, 95, of Sheridan, who died March 9, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. She was born Feb. 26, 1913, in Angelina County, Texas, to Robert and Artie Bessie Harris. She married
William Finley on Dec. 27, 1930, in Lufkin, Texas. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and making clothes for herself and her daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Thomas R. Finley; three brothers, James, Norman and Doyle Harris; and four sisters, Zeba Havercamp, Artie Lee, Faye Ballinger and Dora Mericle. Survivors include a son, Dr. John Finley, and a daughter, Virginia Melton, both of Sheridan; a sister, Nancy Tipton of Dayton; a brother, Joe Harris of Huntington, Texas; and two grandsons.
Henry `Shorty' Jackson
Funeral services for Henry Shorty Jackson, 84, of Sheridan will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Memorial cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Jackson died March 5, 2008. He was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Roundup, Mont., to Gilbert and Imogene (Mast) Jackson. The family moved to Sheridan when he was 6 years old, and he grew up and attended school here. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years, then returned to Sheridan and worked as an electrician for Chauncey Bohnsack, Sheridan Electric City and Superior Laundry before beginning his own business with Jackson Electric. He later sold the business. He married
Irene Dau on March 1, 1958. He was active in Boy Scouts, joining Friendly Indians in 1936. He was a Scout Master for Troops 105 and 117 from 1953-2005. He became district training chairman in 1974 and was a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow. He served on the Eagle board of review and was district representative scouting coordinator for Cub Pack 117. He received the Scout Masters Key & Training Award, the Silver Beaver Award in 1969, Frank Morgan Award Central Wyoming Council, the District Award of Merit and Lamb of God Award in 1985. He was the last surviving charter member of Troop 117. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1959, serving on the church council, evangelism committee and property committee, and helped organize the Sunday Funnies and Chums programs. He was preceded in death by a twin sister, Helen. Survivors include his wife; three sisters, Faye Symons and Carol Dau, both of Sheridan, and Shirley Snelling of Denver; and a brother, Kenneth of Honolulu. Pauline E. Horsley
Pauline E. Horsley, 79, of Sheridan died March 10, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Horsley was born Feb. 22, 1929, in Detroit to Lawrence and Marie (Waldeck) Jones. She grew up and graduated from high school in Indiana and came to Sheridan in 1958. She worked for the Salvation Army Thrift Store for 30 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Lindsey. Survivors include three sons, Larry, Clint and Jerry Lindsey, and a daughter, Karen Reinholt, all of Sheridan; two brothers, James Jones of Indiana and Paul Jones of Florida; and five grandchildren. Mavrakis memorial name corrected Memorials for Sam Harry Mavrakis may be made to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of Wyoming, which is the nonprofit arm of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, not to the Wyoming State Game and Fish Foundation. The foundation name was incorrectly given to The Sheridan Press by the funeral home. Mr. Mavrakis' obituary appeared in Monday's Press.
