Helen R. Sampson
No services are planned for Helen R. Sampson, 93, of Sheridan in accordance with her wishes. Mrs. Sampson died Feb. 20, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and burial of cremains will be with her husband in Black Hills National cemetery, Sturgis, S.D., under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Sampson was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Coral, Mich., to Robert and Anna Spence. She received her teaching certificate from Spearfish (S.D.) College and taught school in Torrington. She married
John "Woody" Sampson on June 25, 1938, in Kimball, Neb. She was a member of the P.E.O. in Gillette and the Congregational Church in Sheridan. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Molly Barlow of Billings; two sisters, Donna Dickson of Pinedale and Pauline Schmidt of Eldorado, Calif.; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Conrad A. McEdward
Conrad A. McEdward, 77, of Sheridan died Feb. 20, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Thomas Alexander Brown
A memorial fund has been established for Thomas Alexander Brown, 27, of Sheridan. Donations may be made to the Thomas A. Brown Memorial in care of Cowboy State Bank, attn: Shanta, 951 Coffeen Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801. Mr. Brown died Feb. 19, 2008, in a work-related accident in southeast Johnson County. Derold Eugene `Buzz' Carpenter Jr.
Derold Eugene `Buzz' Carpenter Jr., 66, of Cody died Feb. 14, 2008, near Cody. He was father of Amber Vine of Sheridan. Memorial services will be announced later. Mr. Carpenter was born Jan. 4, 1942, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Derold and Helen Heitman Carpenter. He served in the military during the Cuban missile crisis and was honorably discharged in 1966 with a letter of commendation. He framed houses in Colorado until 1977, when he went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad as a brakeman, conductor and locomotive engineer. He handled trains in the coal basins of Wyoming and Montana for 20 years, until he retired. He married
Audrey Mortensen on May 12, 1995, in Shell Canyon. The couple enjoyed fly-fishing and tending their five dogs and four cats. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack. In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife; a son, Brad Carpenter Betschowa of Colorado; his mother of Washington; a sister, Julie Carpenter of Washington; two brothers, Roger of Oklahoma and Dale of Arizona; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society in care of First National Bank and Trust of Cody.
Dorothy J. Kline
Funeral Mass for Dorothy Jean (Grant) Kline, 101, of Cheyenne will be 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne. She was mother of Charlotte Belton of Sheridan. Mrs. Kline died Feb. 14, 2008, in Cheyenne, following a brief illness. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Kline was born June 4, 1906, in Denver to Duncan and Mary Regan Grant. She grew up on the family ranch near Wheatland. She married
Arthur Kline in 1939. They lived in Cheyenne for most of their married
life, except for a few years during World War II when they lived in Long Beach, Calif., and from 1956-61, when they lived in Washington, D.C., where Mr. Kline served on the Federal Power Commission. While in Cheyenne, Mr. Kline was an attorney and, later, district judge. Mrs. Kline was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral Guild, Cheyenne Artists' Guild, and Westerners. She was an artist, and her oil paintings received awards over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999 and four siblings. Survivors include a second daughter, Marian Jean Kline of Cheyenne; a son, Duncan Kline of Laramie; and four grandchildren. Thomas Alexander Brown
Funeral services for Thomas Alexander Brown, 27, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Salvation Army Chapel under direction of Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Brown died Feb. 19, 2008, in a work-related accident. He was born Feb. 19, 1981, in Colfax, Wash., to Kathleen and Douglas Brown. He married
Valerie Hamilton on July 15, 2006. He had worked for Mister Well Service as a rig hand for the past year. He enjoyed his family and friends, NASCAR, and football. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mashyala of Billings and Jazmyne and Nikkita of Sheridan; his mother of Sheridan; his father of Nevada; a sister, Amy Brown of Grand, Neb.; a brother, Nathan of Sheridan; and his grandparents, Ernest VanKeuren of Oregon and Sandy Moore of Spokane, Wash.
Clarence William Weber

Harvey James Overman
Harvey James Overman, 72, of Arvada died Feb. 18, 2008, en route to the hospital in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with Bob Moore officiating. Private burial will be on the Keeline Ranch. Mr. Overman was born Sept. 25, 1935, in Lusk to Harvey and Goldie Overman. He grew up and attended schools in Lusk and Torrington. He went to work for the Keeline Ranch when he was 14. He also worked for Madden's Livestock and for Kerr-McGee Coal for several years. He married
Lucretcia Ahern in May 1989. They made their home in Arvada. Mr. Overman worked for the Flying H Ranch for 10 years and, later, for Trig Marquess south of Gillette. He worked in ranching and construction until the time of his death. He was a member of the American Cowboy Team Roping Association, the Montana Team Roping Association and the Wyoming Team Roping Association. He shared reserve champion honors with Don Rice at the National Finals Team Roping in Reno, Nev., in 2000. He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Niefert. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Craig of Newcastle, Clayton of Utah and Clint of Eveleth, Minn.; one stepson, John Ahern of Clearmont; two stepdaughters, Anne Ahern of Okeechobee, Fla., and Petey MacCarty of Sheridan; three sisters, Francis Dodson and Vergie Overman, both of Torrington, and Jo Adkins of Southerland, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Jeanie C. Shipley
Jeanie C. Shipley, 77, of Sheridan died Feb. 17, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Harold George Knaub
Harold George Knaub, 79, of Bozeman, Mont., died Feb. 16, 2008, in his sleep at Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman. He was father of Scott Knaub of Sheridan and Lodge Grass, Mont. Funeral services were this morning at First Congregational Church of Laurel (Mont.) with burial in Laurel cemetery. Arrangements were with Remington Letcher Funeral Chapel of Bozeman. Mr. Knaub was born June 16, 1928, to Phillip and Mary Katherine (Neibauer) Knaub on the family farm three miles north of Laurel. His parents were homesteaders from Kautz, Russia. He grew up on the family farm raising Holstein, Hereford and Red Angus cattle as well as dryland crops, irrigated alfalfa and field corn. The family also had a beet farm, and Mr. Knaub supervised German prisoners of war in the field during World War II. He was a 1947 graduate of Laurel High School, where he played football. He enjoyed hunting big game and collecting antiques. He was president of the Laurel Rod and Gun Club and Laurel Jaycees and a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Laurel Saddle Club and enjoyed riding his black horse, Chief, dressed as a cavalryman and accompanied by his German shepherd dog, Pepper, in the annual July Fourth parades. He married
Charlotte Decker in 1953. They were divorced in 1972. Mr. Knaub sold the family dairy farm and went to work as a heavy-equipment operator at Big Sky Resort. As construction boss, he participated in building the Lone Peak Triple Chair along with major ski runs and the resort infrastructure. He was a member of the Gallatin Canyon Volunteer Fire Department. He left Big Sky in 1983, when he joined the Operating Engineers Union and worked in construction. In 1989, he joined a son working for Andesite Construction until he retired at 75. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Phil, and three sisters, Katie Schreiner, Lydia Frank and Rosie Reiber. Survivors include a second son, J.C. of Big Sky, Mont.; a daughter, Laurie Smith of Fort Mill, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Jessie T. Stringer
Jessie T. Stringer, 79, of Sheridan died Feb. 16, 2008, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services will be in the Macon Road Chapel in Columbus, Ga., with burial in Parkhill cemetery in Columbus. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Strifler-Hamby Mortuary is in charge of arrangements in Columbus.
John D. Prill
Memorial services for John D. Prill, 39, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Prill died Feb. 15, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of natural causes. He was born Nov. 6, 1968, in Sheridan to Bud and Teri Prill. He was a 1987 graduate of Sheridan High School. He married
Collette Mallinger on April 16, 1994. He enjoyed bow hunting, boating, working on cars and building. He was a sheet metal worker at Prill Bros. He was preceded in death by a stepson, James Cerwick, and grandparents David and Mary Prill and Dorothy Jensik. Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen of Sheridan; a daughter, Stephanie of Sheridan; three stepsons, Jesse, Michael and Mason Cerwick, all of Sheridan; his parents of Ranchester; a brother, Gary of Sheridan; and his grandfather, George Jensik.
Balbena Elizabeth `Belle' Manring
Balbena Elizabeth Belle Manring, 95, of Sheridan died Feb. 15, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Kaycee with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Kaycee cemetery with graveside rites. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home of Buffalo. Mrs. Manring was born March 2, 1912, in York, Neb., to John and Katie M. (Vczjorek) Pruss. , and the combined families moved to St. Paul, Neb. After her father died in the early 1920s, Mrs. Manring lived with an aunt in Alba, Neb. At 13, she moved in with her older sister and brother-in-law, working as housekeeper and cook. At 15, she moved to Loup City, Neb., where she worked in a hotel. She married
Bill Bangs in 1932. She moved to Kaycee in 1952 to be near a brother, Jack Pruss, and she and Mr. Bangs were divorced shortly after. She married
Kenny Manring in 1953, and they resided in Kaycee, where she often worked as a waitress. The couple later lived in Glenrock, Jackson, Worland, Riverton, Gillette, Big Piney and Douglas before returning to Kaycee in 1966. Mr. Manring died in 2002. Mrs. Manring moved to Sheridan Manor in 2006. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by three infant sons; three sisters, Mary Turek, Helen Wrobleski and Gundy Kruger; and two brothers, Don Pruss and Eddie J. Jack Pruss. Walter `Bud' Pilch
Funeral services for Walter Bud Pilch, 89, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Carter Benedict officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Viewing will be 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Pilch died Feb. 14, 2008, in Heritage Acres Nursing Home in Hardin, Mont. He was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Acme to Samuel and Mary (Peanowski) Pilch. He grew up in the Sheridan area. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then returned to Sheridan. He married
Gladys Adsit in the late 1940s in Sheridan. He worked as a cook before moving to Thermopolis, where he operated a motel for several years. He moved to Dayton and Ranchester before returning to Sheridan. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 150 and enjoyed gardening, raising sheep and gambling. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe, John, Stanley and Smokey, and two sisters, Emily Baker and Rosie Provnick. Survivors include a sister, Bernice Minchers of Hardin. Richard J. Michaelis
Richard J. Michaelis, 53, of Sheridan died Feb. 15, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital of leukemia. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Cremation will follow. Mr. Michaelis requested that friends and family donate blood as a memorial to him.
Helen Irene Harnish
Helen Irene Harnish, 80, of Sheridan died Feb. 14, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Pete Johnson as celebrant. Vigil service and rosary will be 5 p.m. Sunday at the church. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with graveside rites will be Monday after the Mass in Willow Grove cemetery. Mrs. Harnish was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Buffalo to Guy and Ida May McConnell. She grew up and attended school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson High School in 1945. She attended Kansas Wesleyan University and later received a teaching certificate from the state of Wyoming. She taught country schools in Johnson, Sheridan and Campbell counties. She married
George Harnish on Jan. 25, 1947, in Livingston, Mont. They resided on the Ed Fitch Ranch between Gillette and Arvada for two years before Mr. Harnish went to work for the Dam Construction Division of the Bureau of Reclamation. After he retired, the couple moved to Arizona for a couple of years before returning to Wyoming. They worked at Caribou Lodge west of Buffalo for two years, then moved to Edgerton, where they owned and operated the bowling alley for 13 years. While in Edgerton, Mrs. Harnish was a substitute teacher there and in Midwest. The couple returned to Buffalo, and she worked as a nurse's aide at the veterans home until she retired. Mr. Harnish died in June 2006. Mrs. Harnish moved to Sheridan Manor three months ago. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, two bridge clubs in Buffalo, the Buffalo Pool League, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was also a foster grandparent. An avid bowler and golfer, she won handicap and scratch championships at the State Bowling Tournament. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles McConnell. Survivors include one brother, Don McConnell of Superior, Ariz., and Buffalo; a half brother, John Arross of Casper; and a sister, Annette Akers of Buffalo.
