Doris Stewart Carlson

Former Sheridan resident Doris Stewart Carlson of Gillette died Oct. 27, 2007, after a battle with cancer. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Pisgah cemetery with the Rev. Martin Crump officiating. A celebration of Mrs. Carlson's life will follow at Gillette Golf Course Country Club. Mrs. Carlson was born in Moorcroft in 1930 to Frank and Della Stewart. After graduating from Moorcroft High School, she attended beauty school in Sheridan, where she later married Roy Wilbur Carlson. She developed real estate, owned and operated an art gallery and partnered with her sons in ownership of a sporting goods store in Gillette. She bred and raised horses, painted in oils, danced and played the piano. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and reading and painting with the Senior Center art group in Gillette. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Nikki Neiman; two sisters, Beryl and Marlys; a brother, Rex; and a grandson. Survivors include two sons, Ronald of Las Vegas and Michael of Gillette; a daughter, Christy Schomer of Gillette; a sister, Donna Tanner of Gillette; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Christy Schomer, 2224 Gallery View Drive, Gillette, WY 82718, and funds will be divided among the Gillette Hospice, Gillette Senior Art Center and the Kasey Neiman Wrestling Scholarship Fund. Donors with a preferred charity are asked to specify it. Arrangements are with Fidler-Roberts & Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance.

Mary Kathryn `Katie' Popovich

Mary Kathryn Katie Popovich, 79, of Sheridan died Oct. 26, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Popovich was born March 24, 1928, in Bozeman, Mont., to Ottie and Frances (Just) Cloninger. She married Charles W. Popovich on June 11, 1947, in Bozeman. They moved to Sheridan in 1950. She worked as a secretary at Highland Park School for nearly 20 years, starting in 1964. After retiring, she became the family historian. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Sheridan Genealogical Society, and Sheridan County Historical Society. She enjoyed travel, knitting, sports, history and activities with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; a son, Mike of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara Ann Wells of Dubois; a brother, Howard Cloninger of Bozeman; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., or Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, P.O. Box 624, Sheridan, WY 82801.

George Rowe

Former Sheridan resident George Rowe, 81, of Billings died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2007, in the Billings Clinic of natural causes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the Community Bible Church in Fort Benton, Mont. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery there under direction of Benton Funeral Home. Mr. Rowe was born Oct. 17, 1926, in Fort Benton to Edward and Amelia (Koch) Rowe. He enlisted in the Navy in October 1943 and served as a carpenter's mate. After service, he worked throughout Montana and elsewhere as a civil engineer. He married Mary Butler of Big Sandy, Mont., in December 1946. They later divorced. He married Madonna Lyons, and they lived in Sheridan for a time. They later divorced. He moved to Billings in 1998. He was a member of Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and a lifetime member of the Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his son, John Kenneth; a sister, Edna; two brothers, John and Kenneth; and three great-granddaughters. Survivors include four daughters, Debra Simpson, Danya Nivens of Anaconda, Mont., Tamara McCarthy of Boise, Idaho, and Georgina Williams of Cheyenne; two sisters, Katherine Vitt of Great Falls, Mont., and Emma Jean Blumer of Hayden, Idaho; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Michael N. Petrovich

Former Sheridan and Carneyville resident Michael N. Petrovich, 94, of Rock Springs died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, in the Sage View Care Center. Funeral services were 11 a.m. Oct. 10 in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Springs. A prayer service was 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Vase Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Rock Springs. Mr. Petrovich was born June 8, 1913, in Cambria to Nikodim and Kosara Rancic Petrovich. He attended schools in Carneyville and Sheridan and was a 1932 graduate of Sheridan High School. He married Frances Poulos on Oct. 7, 1950, in SHeridan. He worked at Sheridan Coal Co. for 17 years and at FMC for 25 years. He retired in 1978. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Sheridan starting in 1934. He was part of the United Mine Workers Association for 17 years and a charter member of United Steel Workers Association Local 13215, a lifetime member of the Democratic party and a pioneer in the Wyoming conservation movement to preserve Wyoming wilderness. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fly fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson. Survivors include his wife, of Rock Springs; a daughter, Stasha Sayer of Sheridan; two sons, Michael S. and Nikodim C. Petrovich, both of Rock Springs; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Jeffrey R. Wadlington

BUFFALO - Jeffrey R. Wadlington, 43, of Buffalo died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at his residence. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with the Rev. Allen Schaberg officiating. Memorials may be made to the Johnson County Diabetic Support Group in care of the Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Thelma Marie Joan 'Pat' Turk

Thelma Marie Joan "Pat" Turk, 69, of Kaycee died Oct. 24, 2007, in Johnson County Health Care Center. She was sister of Bobby Arndt of Arvada. Private family services are pending with Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo. Mrs. Turk was born Nov. 24, 1937, in Buffalo to Robert and Thelma Arndt. Her brother gave her the nickname "Pat" before she was born. She grew up on her family's ranch west of Kaycee and attended Kaycee schools. She was a 1955 graduate of Kaycee High School and attended Casper College. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Wyoming in 1959. She married Dallas Turk in March 1959 in Casper. The couple lived on her family's ranch in Kaycee. She enjoyed being around animals, especially horses and dogs, riding, working with livestock, the outdoors, and drawing and painting. A big focus of her life was to preserve and improve the ranch, which has been in her family since 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband. In addition to her sisters, survivors include two sons, Raymon and Hugh, both of Kaycee; and two grandsons. Memorials may be made to Kaycee FFA Chapter in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Agnes R. Elliott

Agnes R. Elliott, 90, of Sheridan died in her sleep Oct. 25, 2007, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and private family services are planned later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Elliott was born Sept. 18, 1917, in Franklin, Mont., to Grant and Viola Petit. She married Ray Elliott on Aug. 3, 1935. They lived many years on a ranch in Arvada. She enjoyed working outdoors, gardening, fishing, fencing, remodeling houses as a carpenter, cooking, baking and sewing. She and her husband operated a small grocery store in Arvada in the 1950s, and she later carried mail on the Spotted Horse-Upper Powder River Route. She moved to Sheridan in her later years to be close to family. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, William G.; two sisters, Clara and Iola; and a brother, Kenneth. Survivors include a daughter, Roberta McKenzie of Sheridan; a son, Doug of Decker, Mont.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

John F. Harle

Former Sheridan resident John F. Harle, 60, of Rapid City died Oct. 23, 2007, in Fort Meade Medical Center in Sturgis, S.D. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Don W. Hoover

Funeral services for former Sheridan resident Don W. Hoover, 87, of Anderson, S.C., will be 2 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Hayden Porter officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Hoover was born Aug. 24, 1920, to Harry A. and Jessie Hoover at his family's homestead in Gopher, Mont. He grew up and attended rural schools on the family's ranch. The family later lived in Sheridan during the school year and on the ranch in the summer, and Mr. Hoover graduated from Sheridan High School. After his father died in 1937, he and his older brother, Duane, ran the family ranch and carried mail in the area for 47 years. Mr. Hoover was a brand inspector for the state of Montana for many years and a member of the Montana Livestock Association. He married Carol Spring on Dec. 2, 1951. They lived on the ranch until 1993, when they retired to Sheridan. He was a member of Pine Butte Bible Church in Montana and Mountain View Baptist Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed ranch life, guiding hunters, and sports, especially baseball and rodeos. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Bette Wilson and Jean Haraldson; and his brother. Survivors include five children, Janice Nelson of Beulah, N.D., Harry Hoover of Sandy, Utah, Ruth Cook of Boone, N.C., Mary Hendricks of Anderson, and Rebecca Ashbridges of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to New Tribes Mission, 1000 E. First St., Sanford, FL 32771-1487.

Imogene N. Highstreet

Imogene N. Highstreet, 101, Sheridan, died Oct. 19, 2007, in Lincoln, Neb. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Rev. William Heine officiating, with burial in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born Dec. 18, 1905, in Norton, Kan., to S. Albert and Ethel (Young) Lough, she grew up in Red Cloud, Neb., and graduated from high school in Hastings, Neb. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., and was a telephone operator for a time. She moved to Sheridan in the early 1930s. She married Delmar Highstreet on April 12, 1935. He died in 2001. Mrs. Highstreet went to Lincoln in July to be near her daughter. A member of Immanuel Litheran Church, she enjoyed crafts, sewing, knitting and crochet. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death in addition to her husband. Survivors include a daughter, Delene Legband of Valparaiso, Neb.; a sister, Christina Skultety of Hermiston, Ore.; three granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Imanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Steven Joseph Geiss

Steven Joseph Geiss, 26, of Sheridan died Oct. 18, 2007, at his residence of apparently natural causes. A memorial service is planned later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Geiss was born Nov. 21, 1980, in Sheridan to Mark S. and Lorrie A. (Kildau) Geiss. He grew up and attended schools here and was employed by Fred Bohnsack at Country Construction. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, alpine skiing and being with family and friends. He was a member of the high school wrestling team. Survivors include his parents of Sheridan; two brothers, Timothy Geiss and Chris Morgan, both of Sheridan; and his grandparents, Gordon Geiss of Anchorage, Alaska, Raymond and Agnes Kildau of Lampe, Mo., and John and Mary Ellen McWilliams of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog & Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Susan Patton Fletcher

Memorial services for Susan Patton Fletcher, 54, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Mrs. Fletcher died Oct. 17, 2007, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings after a five-year battle with chronic lymphatic leukemia. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. She was born Feb. 19, 1953, in Dillon, Mont., to John and Virginia (Tovey) Patton. The family moved to Sheridan in 1954, and she attended elementary and high schools here. She married George Fletcher in Sheridan in 1971. The family lived in Bozeman, Mont., from 1972-76 while Mr. Fletcher attended college. They returned to Sheridan in 1976. Mrs. Fletcher began working part time for Fletcher Construction Co. as payroll clerk after her children were in school. She eventually became full-time bookkeeper and corporate secretary/treasurer. She was a member of the company's board of directors for more than 20 years and a co-owner of Fletcher Construction Co. and Fletcher Development LLC. After retiring, she continued to work with crews helping shingle roofs, pour and finish concrete, and do general labor including operating a skid steer loader. She received the title "Director of Fun" for the company. She helped build the addition to the family's cabin at TeePee in the Big Horn Mountains. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends, traveling including trips from Maine to Hawaii and to Puerto Angel, Oaxaca and other sites in Mexico entertaining, playing bridge and attending events at the WYO Theater. She supported her children and grandchildren in their activities, fished, gardened, played sudoku, ranched and farmed. She was a member of the Sheridan Jaycees, a precinct committeewoman for the Republican Party, worked on political campaigns, served on the citizens' advisory board for the Wyoming State Unemployment Division, was an advisory board member for the Sheridan-WYO Rodeo Gold Buckle Club, and served as chairwoman for the Wyoming Matching Endowment Program at Sheridan College. She established the Fletcher Construction Scholarship Fund at Sheridan College, which will be renamed the Susan Patton Fletcher Memorial Fund in honor of her fundraising efforts for the college. She was president of the Sheridan College Foundation board of directors, a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and past president of St. Peter's Altar Guild, member and past president of PEO Chapter AM, and past president of the WYO Theater board. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Amy Bouley and Georgia Boley, and a son, Samuel, all of Sheridan; her parents of Sheridan; three brothers, William "Bill" of Sheridan, John C. "Jack" of Cheyenne, and James "JT" of Saint Cloud, Fla.; a sister, Virginia Stratton of Bozeman; her grandmother, Anna Tovey of Dillon, Mont.; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Susan Patton Fletcher Endowed Scholarship Fund in care of the Sheridan College Foundation, 3059 Coffeen Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801 or to the WYO Theater, 42 N. Main St., Sheridan.

Mary L. Harper

Funeral services for Mary L. Harper, 82, of Banner will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Viewing will be 1-7 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Harper died Thursday, October 18, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. She was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Sheridan to Herman and Maud (Skinner) Langheldt. The family moved several times, and she graduated from high school in Big Horn. She graduated from the University of Wyoming, then taught school in Lingle and Thermopolis. She married George Harper on Sept. 28, 1952, in Sheridan. They ranched at Banner. She worked as a chemist at Texaco for 14 years, until 1982. She remained on the ranch until shortly before her death. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Banner Women's Club and Big Horn Historical Society. She enjoyed cooking, the mountains and being with her family. Survivors include her husband, of Banner; two sons, Tom of Banner and Bob of Salt Lake City; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters. Memorials may be made to the Banner Women's Club, P.O. Box 141, Big Horn, WY 82833; Big Horn Historical Society, P.O. Box 566, Big Horn, WY; or First Presbyterian Church, 2121 Colonial Drive, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Michael C. Zaller

Michael C. Zaller, 43, of Peru, Ill., died Oct. 9, 2007, at his residence. He was father of Hunter and Brianna Zaller of Sheridan. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church in Orwell, Ohio. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Paine-Guerriero Funeral Home in Orwell. Mr. Zaller was born Oct. 12, 1963, in Warren, Ohio, to Leonard R. and Christine R. (Prusinski) Zaller. He was a 1982 graduate of Grand Valley High School in Orwell, then served 21 years with the U.S. Navy, retiring in 2004 with a rank of E-8. During his military career, he was a Navy medical diver and manager/supervisor of specialty clinics worldwide. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and spending time with his children. In addition to his two daughters, survivors include a son, Michael Jr. of LaSalle, Ill.; his parents of Orwell; two brothers, Matthew and Mark, both of Orwell; two sisters, Julie Spindler of Twinsburg, Ohio, and Terri Watson of Plymouth Township, Ohio; and his grandmother, Helen Prusinski of Colebrook, Ohio. Memorials may be made to a fund established for his children at Middlefield Bank, 30 S. Maple, Orwell, OH 44076.

Courtney Jerome Hugs

Courtney Jerome Hugs, 19, of Hardin, Mont., died Oct. 17, 2007, of injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was the son of Oliver (Shannon) "Hovey" Hugs of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Crow Agency (Mont.) Multipurpose Building. Burial will be in Hardin Fairview cemetery under direction of Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. He was born Feb. 26, 1988, in Crow Agency to Mr. Hugs and Shelley Schumacher. He was given the Crow name of Iichiil`ehaaleendaakaache (One Among the Horses). He lived in the Hardin area most of his life and attended schools there. He played intermural basketball in junior high. Later he attended the Kicking Horse Job Crops in Ronan, Mont. He was an artist and enjoyed skateboarding, modeling cars and setting up stereo systems. He worked for Flying J and Taco John's. His extended family included his companion, Nancy Cowan. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Midge Venne. In addition to his father, survivors include his mother, Shelley Schumacher Peterson of Hardin; five sisters, Molly White, Zelda and Holly Rae Hugs, Jodi Lee and Heather Blakeman; three brothers, Cody Brown, DJ Weasel Bear and Eugene Red Star; grandparents Paul and Shirley Schumacher, Sonny and Darlene Hugs, Carol Joy, Ted and Peggy Buckley, Scotty Wiseman, Pansy Hugs and Mary Rose Humphrey; and one great-grandmother, Winona Plenty Hoops.

Constance E. Petsoff

Constance E. Petsoff, 82, of Sheridan died Oct. 17, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. A private family service will be in Story. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Petsoff was born July 2, 1925, in Sheridan to Thomas and Lilly (Walls) Demos. She grew up and graduated from high school in Gillette. She lived in Englewood, Colo., for 40 years before returning to Story, then to Sheridan in 2003. She worked for Coca-Cola for many years. She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom. Survivors include two sons, Rick of Sheridan and Randy of Glenridge, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

Joseph William 'Joe' Zowada

Joseph William "Joe" Zowada, 78, of Sheridan died Oct. 18, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial service for the family is planned later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Zowada was born July 19, 1929, to Joseph and Nellie Zowada. He graduated from Sheridan High School and received his bachelor's degree in teaching from Chadron (Neb.) State University. While at Chadron, he was an All-American football player and held the rushing record for 37 years. He married Blanche Dubois. He was a meat cutter and part owner of the Sheridan Inn from 1959-65. He enjoyed hunting. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Diana Hoover of Sheridan; a son, Mike of Pinson, Tenn.; a brother, Larry of Downey, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in care of Jill Tonn, regional director, 1291 Jones Road, Thermopolis, WY 82443.
