Jeffrey Fairbank
A private family memorial service for Jeffrey Fairbank, 49, of Sheridan will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Fairbank died Sept. 9, 2007, at his residence of natural causes. Cremation has taken place. He was born Oct. 5, 1957, in Rapid City to Glenn and June Fairbank. He was a 1976 graduate of Sheridan High School and a 1993 graduate of Western Wyoming Community College with an Associate of Applied Science degree in respiratory therapy. He made the President's Honor Roll while attending the community college. He worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, Ore., and Lincare. He was employed by Sheridan VA Medical Center at the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by a son, Chris, and a brother, David. Survivors include a son, Adam of Sheridan; his parents of Sheridan; siblings Barbara Bennick of Sheridan, Glenn of Bonner Springs, Kan., Jeri Bagley of Henderson, Nev., and Dan of Sutcliffe, Nev.; and three grandchildren.
Edward F. Wattenberg
Private family services for Edward F. Wattenberg, 77, of Sheridan will be later under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Wattenberg died Sept. 7, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born May 9, 1930, in Sheridan to Edward and Erma (Williams) Wattenberg. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Winston during the Korean War. After service, he returned to Sheridan. He married
Wanda Eversull on Dec. 27, 1954. They operated the family dairy farm south of Sheridan until 1975, then Mr. Wattenberg delivered mail for a few years until the family moved to Thermopolis. He retired in 1996 and returned to Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was preceded in death by a son, Myron; a sister, Ella Mae; and a brother, Robert. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Erma Jean Claflin and Edna Mae Wattenberg, both of Sheridan; and one grandson.
Mary Agnes (Marron) Charles
Graveside services for Sheridan native Mary Agnes (Marron) Charles, 93, of Redding, Calif., will be Friday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Service time has not been decided, according to the family. Mrs. Charles died Aug. 26, 2007, at her residence. Mass of Christian Burial was in Redding on Aug. 31. Mrs. Charles was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Sheridan to Rose (Rodgers) Marron McCarthy and John Bernard Marron. She graduated from Holy Name School and Sheridan High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin E. Charles, and a brother, John Thomas Marron. Survivors include two sons, Tom of Shasta, Calif., and Jim of Scio, Ore.; and a brother, Bernard Marron of Sheridan.
John C. Barker Sr.
Funeral services for John C. Barker Sr., 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Ogg officiating. Burial will be in Dayton cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Barker died Sept. 5, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 14, 1920, to Edwin and Matilda (Klinkosh) Barker on the family ranch near Parkman. He attended the Little Blue School on Barker Road and graduated from Sheridan High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, then served in the Army under Gen. Patton in Italy and Germany during World War II. After the war, he returned to the family ranch. He married
Patricia Walker in 1954. They divorced. He married
Annis Rideout in 1958. She died in 1996. Mr. Barker worked in construction for Peter Kiewit and helped build Interstates 90 and 25. He also worked 25 years for Big Horn Coal. He moved to Ranchester in 1987, then to Sheridan in 2003. He was a life member of Eagles No. 186, a member of the Catholic Church, and a member and past state commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid fisherman. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ed, in 2006. Survivors include two sons, John Jr. of Ranchester and Ed of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a sister, Louise Wilson of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Julia Demchok Hansen
Sheridan County native Julia Demchok Hansen, 91, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Sept. 4, 2007, in Northern Oaks Nursing and Rehab Center in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Friday in Mount Olivet cemetery in Fort Worth under direction of Greenwood Funeral Home. Mrs. Hansen was born April 20, 1916, to John and Maria Virostko Demchok. The family homesteaded in the Dutch Creek area near Sheridan. She married
Hans Hansen, and the couple made their home in Fort Worth. Mr. Hansen died in 1971.
Jamie Marie Fancher
Sheridan native Jamie Marie Fancher, 30, of Gillette died Sept. 3, 2007, at her residence of natural causes. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Family Life Church with Pastor Martin Crump officiating. Burial will be in Mount Pisgah cemetery. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home. Mrs. Fancher was born Dec. 17, 1976, in Sheridan to Roger Goodman and Helen Beach. She was a 1995 graduate of Arvada-Clearmont High School. She married
Andrew Andy Fancher on May 1, 2004, and the couple made their home in Gillette. She was employed by Blue Ribbon Mortgage for more than four years as a loan processor. She was completing her business degree at Gillette College at the time of her death. She enjoyed dirt biking and camping with her family, watching her sons play sports, and playing volleyball. An avid runner, she recently completed her first half-marathon in Spearfish Canyon with a time of one hour, 57 minutes and seven seconds. Survivors include her husband and two sons, Ian and Lane Voiles, all of Gillette; her mother of Tucson, Ariz.; her father of Colstrip, Mont.; siblings Jason Goodman, Kim Kretschman, Kelli O'Loughlin, Josh Goodman and LeeAnn Goodman; and one grandmother, Betty Beach of Sheridan. Goldie Kistler
Private family services for Goldie Kistler, 87, of Sheridan will be later under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kistler died Sept. 4, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born May 17, 1920, in Watertown, S.D., to Russell and Leah (Fisher) Bell. She grew up in South Dakota and graduated from high school in Mitchell, S.D. She married
Keith Kistler in 1945 in South Dakota. They lived in California until they moved to Sheridan in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and puzzles. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Lightner. Survivors include two sons, Roger of Sheridan and Ed of Roseville, Calif.; a daughter, Shelley McEvoy of Isabella, Mo.; a brother, Richard Bell of Gillette; two sisters, Violet Ferreira of San Diego and Tiney Lutz of Dickson, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Maxon Paul Baker
Funeral liturgy for Maxon Paul Baker, 87, of Sheridan will be 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard. Viewing is 1-5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Baker died Sept. 3, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1920, in Ogden, Utah, to Henry and Alice (Simpson) Baker. He grew up in the Buffalo/Sheridan area and attended schools in Sheridan. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1942, received the Good Conduct Medal in 1945, and was discharged in 1946. He married
Rose Polito on July 13, 1947, in Sheridan. He worked at Sheridan Flour Mill and the Mills Co. After retiring, he helped transport vehicles for Avis. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Janus Powell of Ranchester; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Holy Name School, 9 S. Connor St., Sheridan, WY 82801.
Dorothy Newcomer
Dorothy Newcomer, 87, of Sheridan died Sept. 3, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be later. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Newcomer was born Aug. 8, 1920, to Charles and Vera Hebard. She was preceded in death by a brother, Chuck Hebard. Survivors include two sons, Charlie of Sheridan and Bob of Howard City, Mich.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Douglas F. Ferguson
Douglas F. Ferguson, 81, of Sheridan died Sept. 4, 2007, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
Thelma A. Shell
Vigil service for Thelma A. Shell, 85, of Sheridan will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Mrs. Shell died Sept. 2, 2007, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. She was born April 18, 1922, to LeRoy and Blanche (Minion) Bliss in a tent-cabin on the family homestead near Ucross. She attended elementary school at Ucross and was a 1940 graduate of Clearmont High School. She participated in gymnastics, basketball and on the speech team in high school. She married
Lewis W. Shell in 1942 in Hardin, Mont. The couple worked on area ranches for a number of years. During World War II, when there was a shortage of help, she drove a horse-drawn buck rake in the hay fields. She was the cook at many of the ranches, and cooked for two years at the Copper Kettle in Sheridan. She also worked in the office at Goar's Shoe Store starting in 1968, then for the Perkins Foundation until 1984, when she retired. She enjoyed creating art, mainly oils and pen-and-ink, along with knitting, needle crafts, cooking and canning. She was a member of Big Horn Women's Club, Big Goose Women's Club, Sheridan Artist Guild and the Business and Professional Women's Association. She was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Hart, a brother, Alfred, and two half brothers, LeRoy and Jack Neimier. Survivors include her husband; two sons, LeRoy of Sheridan and Jim of Buffalo; a daughter, Ardath Lunbeck of Story; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Edward N. Green
Funeral services for Edward N. Green, 66, of Sheridan will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Wyoming National Guard under direction of Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 will host a celebration of life reception following the services. Viewing will be 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Green died Sept. 2, 2007, in Billings Clinic Hospital. He was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Sheridan to Harry and Louise (Johnston) Green. He graduated from high school in Sheridan and enlisted in the Air Force. He was stationed in Korea and returned to Sheridan after his service. He married
Vikki Jones on June 20, 1964, in Sheridan. He worked as a barber for several years before joining the Sheridan Fire Department. He rose to the rank of captain before retiring in 1995 after 26 years of service. He then drove a school bus for several years. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Sheridan County Sportsmen's Association, Wyoming Muzzleloading Association, Sheridan Bull Shooter's Club, National Rifle Association, National Muzzleloading Association, the YMCA, and International Association of Firefighters Local 276. An avid NASCAR fan, he also enjoyed playing cribbage, cooking, riding his Harley, horseback riding, hunting and other outdoor activities, and being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis. Survivors include his wife; a son, John, and daughter, Lora Smith, both of Sheridan; three brothers, Gary, Snook and Bob, all of Sheridan; and four grandchildren. Kenneth Dewitt `Ken' Jackson
Kenneth Dewitt Ken Jackson, 86, of Banner died Sept. 2, 2007, in Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Little Big Horn National cemetery in Crow Agency, Mont., with the Rev. Fabian Fehring officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Wednesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mr. Jackson was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Columbia City, Ind., to Heber and Susie Jackson. He was a 1939 graduate of Columbia City High School. He joined the U.S. Army in December 1942 and served in the Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Following an honorable discharge, he returned to Indiana. He married
Marjorie Burke in 1948 in Yuma, Ariz., and they eventually made their home in Gillette, where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Mrs. Jackson died in September 1968. Mr. Jackson lived in Longmont, Colo., briefly before returning to Gillette. He retired in 1982 and built a house in Banner, where he lived after its completion in 1984. He was a member of the Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. An avid woodworker and cabinetmaker, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing and the mountains. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha, and a brother, Benjamin. Survivors include two sons, Burke of Cheyenne and Jerry of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Mathews of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Gladys I. Shillingstad
Gladys I. Shillingstad, 85, of Buffalo died Aug. 30, 2007, in a nursing home in Buffalo. She was sister of Rodney Reel of Sheridan. Visitation is 1-3 p.m. today at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rapid City with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial will be in Pine Lawn cemetery. Mrs. Shillingstad was born Dec. 5, 1921, at the family ranch at Four Horse, southwest of Moorcroft, to Virgil and Agnes (Johnson) Reel. She moved to Rapid City in 1960 and resided there until moving to Buffalo to be closer to her niece. She enjoyed family, camping, and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lawrence and Roy; and three sisters, Irene DeWolff, Phyllis Siefken and Virginia Husted. Survivors include another brother, Damond Reel of Rapid City; and two sisters, Dorothy Dot Christenson of Kansas and Jean Saunders of Rapid City. A memorial has been established to benefit Alzheimer's research.
Dorothy Hockert
Funeral services for Dorothy Hockert, 86, of Sheridan will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, Ind. Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Local arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home, with Allen Funeral Home handling arrangements in Indiana. Mrs. Hockert died Aug. 29, 2007, in Sheridan Manor. She was born Sept. 3, 1920, to Gilbert and Myrtle Rowe in Terre Haute, Ind. She finished high school and earned a bachelor's degree. She married
Chester Hockert in Terre Haute on Dec. 29, 1942. She volunteered many hours in community service, including leadership and volunteer positions with the Indiana University Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Friends of Music of Indiana University, Community Foundation of Morgan County (Ind.) and Trinity Episcopal Church. An avid, award-winning gardener, she also enjoyed travel, golf and bridge and was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include three children, Janet Shepherd and Robert Hockert, both of Gillette, and Richard Hockert of Dallas; two sisters, Esther Smith of La Jolla, Calif., and Rose Thompson of Banning, Calif.; a brother, Gilbert Rowe of Grand Rapids, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
