Harley D. LaFever

Former Sheridan resident Harley D. LaFever, 71, Alfalfa, Okla., died Saturday, April 16, 2005, in St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. Services were April 19 at Eakly Methodist Church in Eakly, Okla., with burial in Eakly cemetery. Arrangements were with Pitcher-Hackney Funeral Home of Carnegie, Okla. Born Nov. 20, 1933, in Alfalfa to Henry Edward and Lena Mae (Stuteville) LaFever, he grew up there and served in the Air Force in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the military after 22 years. Mr. LaFever worked at Sheridan VA Medical Center and as a tractor mechanic. He belonged to Eakly American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hydro Hi-Steppers, American and Oklahoma Quarter Horse associations, and Wrangler Round-up. He was preceded in death by a son, Harley D. Joe LaFever II, a daughter, Barbara Jean, two brothers, Leon and Rayburn LaFever, and three sisters, Peggy Gonzalez, Rosetta Easter, and Hazel, an infant. Survivors include six children, Lorrain LaFever of Vernon, Texas, Gail LaFever of Sheridan, Phillip Tanner of Germany, Teresa Baldwin of Mitchell, Ind., Sara Sidebottom of Eugene, Ore., and Harlettie Skaggs of Carnegie; three brothers, Clevurn and Billy LaFever of Carnegie and Ronnie LaFever of Gotebo, Okla.; a sister, Patsy Liggitt of California; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

R.L. Morgenweck Jr.

Robert L. Morgenweck Jr., 85, Sheridan, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sheridan Masonic 8 cemetery, the Rev. Alan Boyles officiating, with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Born Sept. 9, 1919, in in Billings to Robert and May (Reed) Morgenweck, he married Eva Minick on Feb. 14, 1941, in Hardin, Mont. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served as an aviator in World War II. Mr. Morgenweck retired after 30 years as a mechanic for the Veterans Administration. A member of Elks Lodge and the Navy Reserve, he enjoyed gardening and hunting. His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Larry Morgenweck of Milford, Conn., and Bobby Morgenweck of Lander; a sister, Murial West; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the Dog & Cat Shelter in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Joel Evens Gates

Joel Evens Gates, 68, Story, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Billings Deaconess Hospital after a brief illness. A memorial service will take place this summer. Born July 17, 1936, in Boston to Martha Abigail (Evens) and Albert Leland Gates, he graduated from the Middlesex School in 1955, attended Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University), and served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany. He married Suzanne Trimble Snyder in 1960. Survivors include his wife; four children, Martha Gates Hedrick of Fort Collins, Colo., Lisa Philbrick Gates of Boise, Idaho, Sarah Clayton Gates of Salida, Colo., and Jonathan Evens Gates of Story; a sister, Martha Gates Iszard of South Freeport, Maine; a brother, Jonathan Leland Gates of Old Greenwich, Conn.; and three nieces and nephews. Mr. Gates loved his family, friends and all animals, especially his two springer spaniels. Memorials may benefit the Dog & Cat Shelter in care of Kane Funeral Home.

Sylvia Roberts

Sylvia Roberts, 66, Sheridan, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Assembly of God Church, Pastor John Jackson officiating. Born Feb. 16, 1939, in Fredericksburg, Va., she married Oakey Roberts on March 30, 1963. Mrs. Roberts worked for Marion Day Care, Children's Center, YMCA Day Care, and I Can Day Care. She was an active member of Sunrise Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed knitting, spending time with children and their families, church activities, and friends. Her husband died in 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Melinda Roberts-Romsa of Cheyenne; and three grandchildren. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Keith M. Mudd

Keith Merle Mudd, 71, Buffalo, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, in Buffalo. He previously worked as a service station attendant in Sheridan. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Su Debree officiating. Born March 31, 1934, in Rawlins to Raymond and Marlyss Stauss Mudd, he grew up in Rawlins and graduated from Rawlins high school in 1952. He worked for Collier Dairy in Rawlins and later for Wyoming Dairy. He married Barbara Cortem on Dec. 14, 1953, in Rawlins, and they made their home there. The couple divorced in 1967, and Mr. Mudd moved to Buffalo, where he was a trucker until 1975. He then worked as a service station attendant in Buffalo and Sheridan. He also worked at Buffalo Short Stop until his death. He received numerous bowling awards and enjoyed working with junior bowlers in Buffalo. He also liked to hunt and fish. He was godfather of Kristi Lynn Blakely of Gillette and close friend of Joy Mize of Buffalo. Two brothers preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Scott Mudd of Las Cruces, N.M., and John Mudd of Fort Lupton, Colo.; two sisters, Luella Sprague of Los Angeles and Lorretta Lauck of Wheatland; two brothers, Jim Mudd of Puscolaone, Texas, and Dick Mudd of Yuma, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit American Diabetes Research Foundation in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Gavin E. Jerrard

Gavin Elgin Jarrard, 37, Buffalo, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, of hypothermia in the Big Horn Mountains. He was son of Ceona Jarrard, grandson of Zenith Kagie, and brother of Rory Jarrard, all of Story. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, Fred Rosenthal officiating, followed by graveside services in Willow Grove cemetery. Born Aug. 11, 1967, in Laramie to Ceona and Jerry Jarrard, he moved at age 2 with his family to Chicago for one year, then to Boulder, Colo., where he attended school until fifth grade. The family then moved to Rochester, N.Y., where he attended junior high and high school. He moved in 1984 to Buffalo, where he graduated from high school in 1985. He then returned to Rochester, where he attended Monroe Community College for one year. He also attended the University of Wyoming for one year. He moved in 1988 to Austin, Texas, where he worked as a zookeeper. He moved to Alpine, Texas, where he attended Sul Ross University and earned certification as a farrier. He married Mandy Heath on Dec. 18, 1998, in Alpine, and they made their home in Buffalo. Mr. Jarrard owned and operated The Cursed Hammer blacksmith shop east of Buffalo from 2002 until his death. He was active in the Department of Family Services Mentor Program in Buffalo and was a substitute teacher. He enjoyed the mountains, playing the tin whistle, and anything to do with music and animals. In addition to his relatives in Story, survivors include his wife; his father of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a brother, Ty Jarrard of West Chester, Pa.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may benefit St. Francis Animal Shelter or Buffalo Skate Park in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Robert L. Morgenweck, 85, Sheridan, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Jason E. Obert

Former Sheridan resident Jason Edward Obert, 29, Fountain, Colo., died Thursday, April 21, 2005, when the helicopter he was riding in was shot down in Iraq. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Sheridan College Golden Dome, Pastor Ron Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with military rites by the Army, American Legion Post 7, and the El Paso County (Colo.) sheriff's office. Memorials may benefit his sons through The Jason Obert Memorial Fund in care of Security Service Federal Credit Union, 7025 Mesa Ridge Parkway, Fountain, CO 80817.

Ethel Garland

Visitation for Ethel Garland will be 5-7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating, with burial in Sheridan Eagles cemetery. Mrs. Garland, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Born Aug. 28, 1919, in McIntosh, S.D., to Thomas C. and Emma (Oudin) Cook, she lost her father at an early age and moved with her mother and older brother to Thermopolis. She grew up in Thermopolis, residing at the historic Plaza Hotel, where her mother and brother worked. She graduated from Thermopolis High School in 1939 and earned her teaching certificate from Black Hills State Teachers College in 1942. In 1944, after teaching briefly and working as a PBX operator in Vancouver, Wash., she married Dale Garland of Story. They lived briefly in Gillette before moving to Sheridan. Mr. Garland's employment with Peter Kiewit took the family to Utah and Idaho, and they returned to Sheridan in 1982. An accomplished seamstress, Mrs. Garland enjoyed crocheting, knitting, travel, bowling, and playing cards. She volunteered for several organizations and belonged to Beta Sigma Phi. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Twila Barnes of Vancouver; a son, Douglas Garland of Casper; and a stepson, Lanny of Potzcuaro, Mexico. Memorials may benefit United Methodist Church Building Fund, 215 W. Works St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Marjorie C. Noecker

Services for Marjorie Claudine Noecker are 2 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Noecker, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, June 24, 2005, at Westview Health Care Center. Born Nov. 16, 1928, in Dayton to William M. and Lola (Achenbach) Sack, she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1946 and attended business college. She married Jerome Noecker in 1959 in Reno, Nev. She resided near Lake Tahoe before returning to Sheridan in 1994. A public-service volunteer, she enjoyed golf, needlework, reading, games, and travel. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sharon Dixon; and two sisters, Wilma Burns and Dorothy Hall. Survivors include a son, Daniel Noecker; four brothers, William, Don, Jim and Ken Sack; a sister, Nancy Laughrey; and two grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Senior Citizens Center or donor's choice in care of Karen Green, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Leon C. Cook

Funeral services for Leon C. Cook, 96, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with officers of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Cook died Saturday, June 25, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. He was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Mason City, Neb., to Arden and Bertha (Hauck) Cook. The family moved to a homestead 35 miles south of Gillette when Mr. Cook was 7 years old. He attended country schools and graduated in 1929 from Campbell County High School. He married Nola Osborn on Nov. 20, 1930, in Gillette. They rented land owned by Loyd Rust south of Gillette for 19 years, and Mr. Cook farmed and raised sheep and cattle. He also was one of the first agents for Farm Bureau Auto Insurance. The Cooks bought one of the Leiter estate ranches on Clear Creek near Clearmont in 1950. They raised registered Columbia sheep in addition to beets, wheat, oats and alfalfa. They sold the ranch to George Schuman in 1958 and moved to Sheridan. Mr. Cook went to work for K.B. Tractor Co. as parts manager. He received a Sheridan Press Friendliness-Courtesy Award. He retired in 1968 because of a shoulder injury. Mrs. Cook died Jan. 12, 1959. Mr. Cook married Lucille Johnson in Sheridan in February 1963; she died in March 1998. Mr. Cook lived in Sugarland Ridge from 1999 until 2003 when he moved to Westview. He was a member of Sheridan Gem and Mineral Society, a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles 186, and International Order of Odd Fellows 19. He enjoyed crafts, including cutting and polishing rocks, making miniature furniture and creating airplanes from aluminum cans. He volunteered time at the Sheridan YMCA securing memberships, showed movies at Sheridan Manor and belonged to the Big Horn Mountain Polka Club. He enjoyed fiddlers' contests and other festivals, field trips, and sightseeing from his camper. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include a son, Edward of Buffalo; a daughter, Helen Mitchell of Sheridan; five stepchildren; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Elks Building Fund, Sheridan Senior Citizens Center or the donor's choice.

Wilbur Neil `Pally' Pallesen

Wilbur Neil Pally Pallesen, 67, of Sheridan died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be later in Hanna cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Pallesen was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Hanna to Wilbur and Anne (Annala) Pallesen. He grew up on a ranch 32 miles north of Hanna and attended schools in the Leo community. He was a 1956 graduate of Hanna High School. After graduation, he worked on dude ranches in Montana during the summer and in Arizona during the winter. He worked on the Chase Angus Ranch in Sheridan County until moving to Hanna to work in the coal mine. He served in the Army from 1961-63. He married Pauline Botner in 1964. The couple divorced in 1978. Mr. Pallesen returned to ranch work for a short time, then worked in the construction industry. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for several years. He enjoyed team roping. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Leah Dickerson of Macon, Mo., and Lynn Pirreca of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Karen Hiatt of Sinclair; and four grandchildren.

Ethel Garland

Ethel Garland, 85, of Sheridan died Monday, June 27, 2005, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Eagles cemetery.

Leon C. Cook

Leon C. Cook, 96, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 25, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with officers of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Elks Building Fund, Sheridan Senior Citizens Center or donor's choice.

Robert SKillman

Robert Skillman, 50, of Ranchester died Friday, June 24, 2005, at his residence. Cremation has taken place. A picnic potluck memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connor Battlefield Park in Ranchester. Those attending are asked to wear Spiderman apparel if possible. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Skillman was born June 22, 1955, in North Hollywood, Calif., to Larry and Shirly (Nickles) Skillman. He married Cheryl Whitlock in California on Aug. 2, 1980. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gambling, golf, playing Tetris and pool, singing and cooking. He was a member of the Ranchester Town Council, Dayton Rotary Club and the Bass Fishing Club. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Stephanie, Cheralynn and Kristian Skillman and Irene Weimer, all of Ranchester; a son, Robby of Sheridan; his mother, Shirly Nickles; his stepmother, Wanda Skillman; his grandfather, Robert Perry; two brothers, Jimmy and Larry; a sister, Sheryl Johnson; a stepbrother, Steven Skillman; and five grandchildren. Memorials may be made to a fund in Mr. Skillman's name at Cowboy State Bank.

Kelvy Lloyd Andrews

Kelvy Lloyd Andrews, 45, of Sheridan died Sunday, June 19, 2005, at his residence of natural causes, according to his family. Cremation has taken place at his request. A celebration of his life will be later. Mr. Andrews was born May 3, 1960, in Sundance to Melvin and Beverly (Alexander) Andrews. He attended kindergarten in Buffalo and completed schooling in Sheridan. He was a 1977 graduate of Wyo Tech reportedly the youngest graduate at the time with an Automotive Service Excellence certification. He went to work at Spot Service and later owned the business. He married Ronda Sweet in 1979. They divorced. He worked in various trades throughout his life and enjoyed gardening, camping, water recreation and backyard bonfires with family and friends. Survivors include two children, Jandy Gulley and Jason Wilson, both of Sheridan; his parents; two brothers, Ken of Sheridan and Keith of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister, Katherine Thompson of Fort Collins; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to Wyo Tech in care of Delphine Toner at First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Kenneth A. Frazier

A graveside service for Kenneth A. Frazier, 84, of Sheridan and for his wife, Evelyn (Jump) Frazier, will be 10 a.m. Friday in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Military rites for Mr. Frazier will be conducted by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post 7. Visitation for Mr. Frazier will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Frazier died Sunday, June 19, 2005, in St. Vincent's Hospital in Billings. Mrs. Frazier died Dec. 16, 2003. She was cremated. Mr. Frazier was born June 19, 1921, in Warren, Pa., to John and Edith (Owens) Frazier. He married Evelyn Jump on April 17, 1943, in Endwell, N.Y. Mr. Frazier joined the Army in 1943 and was a clerk and mechanic. He was stationed primarily in California. He was discharged in 1945, and the Fraziers made their home in Warren. Mr. Frazier was a machinist for GTE/Sylvania for many years, retiring in 1982 as a machine shop inspector. He and Mrs. Frazier enjoyed square dances and were members of clubs in Pennsylvania, Arizona, California and Wyoming. Mr. Frazier played the guitar, mandolin and harmonica. He belonged to Big Horn Mountain Polka Club and was recognized as the Peanut Brittle Man. He also was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 and attended meetings at the Elks Lodge in Lake Havasu City. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. The Fraziers spent their summers in the Sheridan area and winters in California and Lake Havasu City, Ariz. In addition to Mrs. Frazier, he was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and four children. Survivors include three daughters, Esther Samuelson of Reminderville, Ohio, Arlene Pixley of Upton and Kendra Grenesko of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, 45 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801.
