John met his wife in Kingfisher, Okla. He married " target="_blank">married Emma Lee Reschke on June 5, 1938, in Kingfisher. Following their marriage, John farmed and drove a truck. He later became involved in the plumbing industry, primarily in the Rocky Mountain region from New Mexico to Montana.

John served 25 years as a Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster and was active in the Church of Christ his entire life. He enjoyed the outdoors and hunting and was an avid rock hound. John was a past member of the Lions Club of Carbondale, Colo.

John Calvert Wood

John Calvert Wood, 71, died unexpectedly Feb. 11, 2002.

He had bravely fought back from hospitalization last spring and was again healthy, active and independent. His family admired his courage, pride and strength during the past year and will miss him deeply.

Mr. Wood was born May 22, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the youngest child of Lee Hodgson and Alice Calvert Wood.

He had a tremendous love of automobiles. Early home films show him driving homemade soapbox cars, and it seemed he was always behind the wheel of something. He also had a love of animals and often talked about his two white ducks, Herman and Henrietta, who appear in early home films.

At age 17, Mr. Wood became involved with a new car club called the "Idlers" in Fullerton, Calif. The members met weekly at the Fullerton airport. Their vehicles were clean, customized cars that were lowered and molded, and members promoted driving safety. At that time he had a 1949 Ford coupe and 1950 Ford convertible. Forty years later there are still 12 original members who organize frequent reunions.

In 1955, Mr. Wood started a used automobile business in Orange, Calif. In the late 1950s he met and married " target="_blank">married Dora Mae McAnally. Daughters Jill and Jan were born in 1959 and 1960.

In 1964 the family moved to Show Low, Ariz., where he started a Rambler dealership. During the three years of ownership he picked up Datsun, Volvo, GMC trucks and Chrysler-Plymouth franchises. The business was renamed John Wood Chrysler-Plymouth in 1965. He also was active in the Elks Club, holding the office of Exalted Ruler in 1965.

During the next years the family made a series of moves finally settling in Cody in 1968. In 1969 Mr. Wood passed the state exam for insurance agents and became the managing agent for First State Bank in Cody.

He always enjoyed being an independent businessman. In 1972 he opened John's Mobile Home Sales in Cody. He toured mobile home factories on his vacations for two years before starting the business.

In Cody he continued to be active in the Elks and Rotary clubs.

As the oil boom in Wyoming quieted, Mr. Wood closed the mobile home business. He then traveled to auto auctions purchasing quality used cars and opened John's Car Town.

Tiring of Wyoming winters, he and Dora retired to Green Valley, Ariz., where they enjoyed years of golf. He also took up cycling as a way to stay active. He purchased a used Paul Barkley/Softride bike, and they toured the Arizona countryside for the next seven years.

Dora died in 1999, and he sold the Arizona home to relocate to East Wenatchee, Wash., to be closer to his daughters and was enjoying his home and the friendliness of the small town.

Once again the car bug hit, and he was enjoying driving his 1991 Corvette. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Wenatchee.

Mr. Wood's family remembers him as tough as nails, but fair and honest to a fault with high standards they struggled to meet. They also remember his soft touch for animals, bringing home strays or a dog from the Humane Society. He was a good man who contributed to this world instead of taking.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Cancer Care House, P.O. Box 2044, Wenatchee, 98801.
