Betty Jean Schoening
Betty Jean Schoening, 71, died peacefully at her home in Cody on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001.
Betty was born June 23, 1930, in Jackson, Miss., the daughter of Houston and Elizabeth Hays Miley. She was raised in Mississippi and at age 16, following her father's death, moved to Texas with her mother and two sisters.
The family later moved to California and it was there that Betty began working as a telephone operator. After moving to Limon, Colo., she met and later married

William V. Schoening on Feb. 10, 1951, in Golden, Colo.
The couple moved to Cody shortly after their marriage and then to California before returning to Cody in 1957 where Betty returned to work as a telephone operator. In 1968 the family moved to Phoenix, where they lived for 10 years before returning to Cody and opening Big Chief Trading, which they operated together. Betty was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Betty enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved the Lord with all her heart and faithfully spent time reading the Bible.
She is survived by her husband Bill of Cody, son James Michael of Goldthwaite, Texas, daughter Linda Schoening Sparks of Cody, sisters and their husbands, Maxine (Edwin) Smith of Concord, Calif., and Mary (Doug) Simon of Ocate, N.M., and grandchildren Micah Lucas, Aaron William and Peggy Rebecca, all of Cody.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Grace Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
Those wishing may make memorial donations in Betty's memory to the Bible and Music Fund at Grace Baptist Church, 4 South Fork Highway, Cody.
Catherine 'Kay' Nelson
Catherine "Kay" Elizabeth Nelson, 90, died Oct. 11, 2001, due to natural causes.
The youngest of three daughters, she was born to Catherine "Katie" Elizabeth (Mann) Mayer and Jacob Paul Mayer on Dec. 10, 1910, on a ranch near Bonanza. She grew up in Shell and Greybull where her father was a grocery salesman for country grocery stores and later owned and operated an insurance and real estate business in Greybull.
She graduated from Greybull High School in 1928. She attended the University of Wyoming where she majored in education.
She met her husband, Conrad Krigbaum Nelson, at Canyon in Yellowstone Park. They married

Sept. 14, 1933, at the Old Shell Lodge in Shell.
Kay and her husband moved to Oregon in the 1930s where their first child Carol Hill was born. In the 1940s they moved to Texas where their second child, Dave Nelson, was born and where her husband worked developing synthetic rubber for the war effort.
They then moved to Billings and Cody following her husband's employment with the Forest Service and Bureau of Reclamation. In 1950 they moved to South America where her husband served in the U.S. Foreign Diplomatic Service. They spent 15 years living in the South American countries of Ecuador, Guatemala and Dutch Guinea (Suriname) before retiring in Shell.
Kay enjoyed traveling, refinishing furniture, decorating, gardening, reading, entertaining and bridge.
Survivors include her son Richard David "Dave" (Irbi) Nelson of Shell, daughter Margaret "Carol" (Ron) Hill of Cody, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Jo Mayer, Marie Catherine Herren and her husband Con.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Shell Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Shell.
Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will be held later.
Dorothy Margaret Hill
Dorothy Margaret (Aduddell) Hill, 88, died Sept. 28, 2001, at West Park Hospital.
She was born to Grant and Bertha (Ballinger) Aduddell on May 26, 1913, in Port Angeles, Wash. In 1916 they moved to Cody where she was a life-long resident and thoroughly appreciated the mountains and surrounding countryside. She received her education in Cody public schools, graduating from CHS in 1931.
On Oct. 19, 1940, she married

Henry Hill Jr. in Bozeman. They were later married

in the Catholic church by Father Kimmet.
Dorothy was a life-long member of St. Anthony's and found solace in her faith. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Circle for many years. She was an avid reader and read a wide variety of books. She also enjoyed playing bridge, doing handwork, and crossword puzzles and listening to music.
Survivors include her sister Elinor VonBloem of Eugene, Ore., son Ronald (Carol) Hill of Cody, daughter Henrietta (Larry) Moore of Lewiston, Idaho, grandchildren Becky Hill of Sheridan, Kristina Kuwana of Alexandria, Va., Stephen Moore of Lewiston and Jason Moore in the Peace Corps in Ivory Coast, West Africa, step granddaughters Elizabeth Jenkins of Cody and Cathy John of Gaithersberg, Md., and three great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by infant son James Henry, her parents, husband Henry, sister Jacqueline Sherrill and a brother, james Aduddell.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 in St. Anthony's. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Candace McCullough
Candace "Candie" (Ritter) McCullough died Sept. 18, 2001, in Montgomery, Texas, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 24, 1950, in Havre, Mont. She grew up in Cody and attended Northwest College before marrying Michael McCullough and moving to Texas.
Candie is survived by her husband Michael, children Lindsey and Christopher McCullough, father Fred Ritter of Thermopolis, sister Cindy Wiest and family of Bozeman, and brother Paul Ritter aznd family of Columbus, Mont.
A memorial service was held Sept. 27 in Montgomery at St. James Episcopal Church.
Marcelle Bennion
Marcelle "Mike" Velma Bennion died Sept. 28, 2001, in Salt Lake City with loving family by her side.
She was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Mankato, Kan., to Ray and Velma Schuster. She was raised and educated in Cody. She married

Bill King of Cody in 1940, and they later divorced.
She worked at the Mountain Bell Telephone Co. in Cody for years and moved to Lovell where she married

Vern Bennion. They had their marriage vows sealed in the Temple in Idaho Falls in 1980. She eventually moved to Casper to be with family.
She enjoyed bingo, watching tennis and spending time with her family.
Survivors include daughter Sandy Loomer of Casper, son Randy (Jody) King of Rochester, Mich., sisters Belva Norwood and Norma Roemmich of Cody, Margaret (Ralph) Thompson of Casper and Neva (Merrill) Lindley of Gardena, Calif., brother Philip (Doris) Schuster of Evanston, 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother, husband Vern Bennion, ex-husband Bill King and sons Dwight "Dewey" King and Billy King.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wyoming Avenue Chapel with Bishop Chrysler officiating.
Miles J. Ellis
Miles J. Ellis of Cody died Oct. 1, 2001, at the West Park Long Term Care Center from complications of old age.
Miles was born on the family farm in Minburn, Iowa, in 1907, the son of Harry and Myrtle Ellis who also ran a small furniture store in town.
In 1925, after graduating from high school and with the experience of the family's retail business, Miles struck out on his own by first working for Montgomery Ward in Perry, Iowa. Due to his hard work and commitment to his responsibilities, Miles climbed the business ladder quickly. Within a few years he was at the management and corporate levels of some of the leading retailers in the nation, including Montgomery Ward, Ben Franklin, Coast to Coast and ending his career with the international firm, Household International.
During his tenure with these companies Miles lived around the world. His work took him to Canada, Mexico, France, Switzerland and Japan.
In 1972 he retired in Cody to be near his brother and sister-in-law, Lyle and Eleanor Ellis. He loved Cody Country and all it had to offer, especially his good friends.
Miles is survived by his sister-in-law Eleanor Ellis and niece Jean (Bob) Loper, all of Cody, and many grand-nieces and their families in Jackson and Laramie.
Cremation has taken place and at Miles' request no services will be held.
William B. Edwards
Long-time Emblem resident William B. Edwards, 77, died of a heart attack Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at West Park Hospital.
He was born Dec. 30, 1923, in Casper, the son of William B. Edwards Sr. and Alice (DeKoster) Edwards.
At age 5 he moved to the Emblem farm homesteaded by his father in 1910. He attended Emblem Elementary School and Greybull High School, graduating in 1941. On Nov. 13, 1943, he married

Harriett Bird of Greybull.
During World War II he served with an Army field artillery unit as a radio specialist in the Italian campaign and was an Army signals instructor at Fort Sill, Okla. After the war he worked for Western Electric Co. for two years before returning to manage the family farm at Emblem.
He served on the boards of Zion Lutheran Church in Emblem, First Interstate Bank in Greybull, the public schools at Emblem and Greybull and the Greybull Valley Irrigation District.
At age 52 he took up flying and his Bellanca Scout became a common sight around the Big Horn Basin for the next 25 years. He was an avid member of the Experimental Aircraft Association chapter in Cody.
He is survived by his wife Harriett Edwards of Emblem, children Jeannie Cook of Cody, David Edwards of Emblem, Carol Knight of Midland, Texas, Kathleen Kinchen of Loveland, Colo., and Richard Edwards of Vancouver, Wash., six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many friends.
Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law Mike Cook of Cody and granddaughter Christy Cook Proefrock, also of Cody.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 at Zion Lutheran Church in Emblem. Burial will follow at the Emblem Cemetery with full military graveside rites.
Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Thursday at Atwood Family Funeral Chapel, 416 1st Ave., So. in Greybull and also one hour prior to the funeral services at Zion Lutheran Church.
Donations in his memory can be made directly to the American Heart Association.
Nancy B. Preston
Nancy B. Preston, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at West Park Long Term Care Center.
Nancy was born in Stockville, Neb., on July 21, 1922, the daughter of Earl and Nellie (Linch) Riley. She lived in Nebraska and as a young lady moved to LaGrange.
She married

Eldon Preston on Dec. 15, 1941, in Gering, Neb., and they moved to Greybull in 1961.
Nancy enjoyed attending Wyoming Fiddler events. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church and BPOE Drove No. 30 in Greybull. Nancy's life was devoted to her family.
She is survived by her children Clint (Nancy) Preston, M.D., of Cody, Randy (Becky) Preston of Cody, Doug Preston of Cheyenne and Delores Daul of Cheyenne, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Eldon, sister Elizabeth Johnson and brother Wendell Riley.
Funeral services were Oct. 13 at First Presbyterian Church in Greybull. Graveside funeral services were Monday.
A memorial fund in her name to benefit First Presbyterian Church has been established at Big Horn Federal Bank, 33 North 6th St., Greybull, 82426.
Christine Anderson
Former Cody resident Christine Anderson, 57, died in a drowning accident near her home in Yelm, Wash., on Sept. 9, 2001.
She was born in Owosso, Mich., on Nov. 4, 1943.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Flint, Mich. She worked as a registered nurse in Flint, Detroit and Grand Rapids, Mich. She also worked at the University of Minnesota Hospital, in Riverton and Cody, as well as in Yelm.
She is survived by her daughter Erika of Northampton, Mass., son Mikael of Missoula, Mont., father John Kuchar, brother Duane Kuchar, sisters Debbie Yaklin and Dianne Sky, all of Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann.
Christine led a beautiful and full life with love and caring for all. A memorial service was held for her by her many friends in Yelm on Sept. 12. Another memorial service will be Oct. 20 in her hometown of New Lothrop, Mich.
