Gaynell Gay Eva Stevens

Former Cody resident Gaynell "Gay" Eva Stevens died Friday, July 28, in the Powell nursing home.

Gay was born in Winchester, Va., on May 1, 1904, the daughter of Andrew H. and Mary S. Marple Dunn.

She moved to Cody to join her brother F.E. "Shorty" Dunn in 1927 and lived with him while she was a telephone operator 1927-28.

She then worked in the Oregon Basin oilfield as a cook where she met her husband Verne. They were married " target="_blank">married Aug. 12, 1930, in Cody.

Gay and Verne shared outdoor activities ranging from hunting a wide variety of game to fishing, rock hunting and archery.

After retiring, they enjoyed several cruises, adding to their long list of friends. Alaska was one of their favorite destinations because they enjoyed the wildlife and scenery.

They have been long-time members of the Elks Club in Cody. She served as president of the Does 1962-63.

Gay was a cheerful person who seemed to find humor in any situation and enjoyed life to its fullest. She was loved by her family, who will remember her hugs.

Gay is survived by her husband Verne Stevens of the Beehive Home in Powell, nephew Ned Dunn and wife Jeannie of Powell, niece Mary Lou and Lee Hurt of Billings, grand-nephews Sean and Michael Dunn and grand-niece Tiffanie May.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ballard Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Daniel L. Haagensen

Daniel L. Haagensen, 89, died Saturday, July 29, at West Park Long Term Care Center.

Mr. Haagensen was born Feb. 2, 1911, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Oswald and Edna Lester Haagensen.

The family moved to Parker, Colo., when he was a young boy. Following his father's death, the family moved to Rock River and Garrett, Wyo.

He later moved to Laramie, where he married " target="_blank">married Ruth E. Lewis in June 1939.

An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed fishing, hunting arrowheads and being a rockhound.

He was employed as a dairyman for many years before working for the University of Wyoming for nearly 20 years.

Mr. Haagensen married " target="_blank">married Mary E. Geagan in August 1967 in Laramie.

He entered the Long Term Care Center in 1997. He was known there for reciting to older residents and was looked on as both a gentle man and a gentleman.

He is survived by his daughter Jayne Sare and husband Gene of Laramie, son Ron of Greybull, stepson Frank and Judy Young of Billings, stepdaughter Judy Elliott of Chicago, brothers Alton of Newcastle and Chet and Helen of Gillette, sister Lois Moore of Laramie, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents and brothers Lamont and Richard.

Memorial graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery.

Patricia G. Manning

The end of a wonderful and much-enjoyed life came Friday, July 28, 2000, for Patricia G. Manning, 81, of Cody.

The daughter of Arthur and Ada Hill, Pat was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Cody. After the death of Arthur Hill from influenza, Pat's mother remarried " target="_blank">married and Pat was adopted by Paul R. Greever of Cody.

She attended Cody schools, completing her high school education in 1936 at the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., while her father was serving as Wyoming's sole congressman.

Pat attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and then the University of Wyoming. She married " target="_blank">married Jack Irwin in 1939 and they were later divorced.

In 1942, she married " target="_blank">married Jack E. Manning and their loving and fun marriage ended with his death in 1998.

Pat and Jack lived many places because of his work in the oil business, but Wyoming and Colorado were always at the top of Pat's list.

In 1950, while flying across southern Wyoming, the Manning's single-engine plane crashed, landing in an isolated, snowy field. The plane's wing caught on some rocks, flipping it over and breaking the backs of Pat and Jack along with causing other serious injuries. They began to walk, Pat without shoes, until they were rescued by a rancher.

Jack was in a Denver hospital for nine months and Pat for six months.

After many years in Denver, the couple retired to Cody in the late 1980s. They traveled extensively and owned a home in Alamos, Mexico, for 20 years. Another favorite destination was the Greever cabin on Eagle Creek on the North Fork.

The first Queen of the Cody Stampede, Pat was an elegant, gracious hostess, loyal friend and loving parent. She was an avid collector of antiques and an accomplished gardener. She had friends around the world and loved to laugh. She was always impeccably and elegantly dressed.

Pat was proud of her work as president of Sands House, a cancer hospice in Denver.

She loved to dance with Jack to favorites like "Mack the Knife" and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon."

Survivors include her brother Bill Greever, son Jack Manning Jr., daughters Karen Gibbons and Jane Sanders, all of Cody, and Susan McConnell of St. Johns, Newfoundland, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was Monday morning at Christ Episcopal Church.

Blanche Preator House

Blanche Preator House, 88, died June 29, 2000.

She was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Burlington to Lotta Frances and Rodney Soloman Preator.

Blanche taught school for 31 years throughout the Big Horn Basin. She was a member of the National Education Association, Park County Historical Society and First Presbyterian Church of Cody. She enjoyed being part of various community activities.

Blanche's enthusiastic devotion to her family remained constant. She loved and appreciated nature and its beauty. She collected a library of American, Wyoming and Native American histories.

Survivors include daughters Yvonne O'Mara of Jackson, Bonnie and husband Gary Brown of Plymouth, Calif., sisters Franz Pearson of Apache Junction, Ariz., Jerry and Maxine Jones of Mesa, Ariz., brothers Rodney and Paulyne Preator of Palm Desert, Calif., Guy and Ruth Preator of Cody, Jack and Dede of Hermiston, Ore., and brother-in-law Pat Ames of Cody. Grandchildren include Karla Meier of Davis, Calif., Cindy Szot of Cheyenne, Kristie Klagge of Rocklin, Calif., Carmen Friedly of Elizabethtown, Pa., Keith Reynolds of Fair Oaks, Calif., Bonnie Zeigler of Vancouver, Wash., 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tilford M. House, son Tilford Ned House, sister Helen Ames and brother Robert Albert.

Memorial services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with interment following in the Basin Cemetery.

Elizabeth G. Vukelich

Elizabeth G. Vukelich, 60, formerly of Cody, died March 20, 2001, at her home in Inverness, Fla., after a brief battle with cancer.

Liz was born in Rock Springs and raised in Greybull. She attended the University of Wyoming and studied elementary education. While in Laramie, she met Vincent Vukelich, son of the late Mike Vukelich of Cody. Vince and Liz were married " target="_blank">married in 1961 and they lived in Cody, Virginia, Germany, Italy and Korea.

Mrs. Vukelich is survived by her husband of Inverness, Fla., daughter Elizabeth Combs of Roanoke, Va., brother Evan Griffiths, Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, brothers and sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Eileen in 1991 and is buried" target="_blank">buried with her at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Mass was celebrated March 26 in Fayetteville, N.C., by Father David Brockman. Burial followed at the Post Cemetery in Fort Bragg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth G. Vukelich Scholarship Fund, care of AM South Bank, 301 U.S. 41 South, Inverness, Fla., 34450.

Alice Tanner

Alice Louise Dalton Tanner, 70, died of surgical complications March 23, 2001, in Provo, Utah.

Alice was born March 3, 1931, to Franklin and Alice (Benson) Dalton in Cowley, the youngest of 10 children. She graduated from Cowley High School in 1949.

She married " target="_blank">married her high school sweetheart and best friend Meldon J. Tanner of Byron on June 13, 1950, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple.

They started their life in Byron where they were blessed with five children. She worked for the school district until they moved to Provo in 1973.

She enjoyed camping in the Big Horns, many years of square dancing, sewing, crafts, needlework and cooking. One of her greatest joys was her family and she would beam with delight when they were together. Alice focused her life on her husband, family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Mel, children Richard Tanner, Sherry and spouse Sid Hetland, Ronn and Trish Tanner, Jerry and Leslie Tanner, Linda Tanner and Richard Rowberry, 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, brother Ralph, sister Dorthy and special niece Jeannie Burnham.

Funeral services were at the Suncrest Fourth Ward Chapel in Orem, Utah.

Kailey and Kaitlynn Gullickson

Kailey Lynn and Kaitlynn Ann Gullickson, newborn twin daughters of Dustin and Jodi Gullickson, died March 22-23, 2001, in a Bismarck, N.D., hospital.

They were born March 22.

They are survived by their parents, grandparents Merrell and Vicki Hoveskeland of Bismarck and Wayne and Debbie Gullickson of Cody and their great-grandparents Omar and Etta Hoveskeland of McVille, N.D., Gordon and Mavis Gullickson of Bismarck and Mavis Thornberg of Sidney, Mont.

They were preceded in death by their maternal great-grandparents Walter and Mary Lesmeister.

A private prayer service was held in Bismarck. Cards may be sent to 412 Ashwood Ave., Bismarck, N.D., 58504.

Melvin J. Robison

Melvin Johnson Robison, 80, died of cancer April 2, 2001, at Powell Nursing Home.

Mel was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Byron to Joseph Ray and Lucy (Johnson) Robison.

He married " target="_blank">married Marguerite Cox on May 24, 1941, in Billings. They lived in Byron for 31 years before moving to Powell in 1972 so he could accept a position as district manager for Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. They had two children, Melvin Jay Robison of Billings and Mitchel Ray Robison of Anchorage, Alaska.

A welder by trade, Mel retired in 1985 after working 36 years for MDU. For the last 13 years he worked as district manager.

He graduated from Byron High School in 1940 and worked at Byron Mercantile 1939-42.

He joined the Air Force in September 1942 and flew as a B-24 Liberator tail turret gunner with the 8th Air Force 466th Bombardment Group.

On Dec. 25, 1944, during his 15th air mission, Staff Sgt. Robison was seriously wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross medals. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent the last 15 winters in Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Mel enjoyed camping with his family. For the last 40 years they camped at Crazy Creek Campground in the Beartooth Mountains. He also enjoyed traveling to Alaska to fish with his son Mitch and daughter-in-law Pat. He once caught a 76-pound king salmon.

When he was 62, Mel qualified for his private pilot's license.

Prior to his retirement, he was involved in the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Eastern Star, Powell Rotary, served on the Powell Airport Board, Powell Planning and Zoning Commission, Byron School Board and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife Marge, sons Jay and spouse Sheri of Billings, Mitch and Pat of Anchorage, brothers Solon and Marjorie of Lovell, Joe of Milton Freewater, Ore., sisters Stella May of Lovell and Mamie Martin of Deaver, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, half-brothers Charles and spouse Linda Robison, Dale and Nancy Robison, half-sister Mary Harmon and Jerry, all of Lovell, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Powell. Visitation and viewing will be held one hour prior to services in the Relief Society Room.

Burial will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with the Powell Veterans Honor Guard providing military honors.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Valley Hospice, 777 Avenue H, Powell, 82435, c/o Douglas Sunderland, MSW.
