Thelma Arlene Jensen Steele

PINEDALE - Thelma Arlene Jensen Steele, 87, died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the Sublette Center in Pinedale. She had lived at the center since October 2007.

She was born July 26, 1921, in Los Angeles to James and Mary Jensen. She joined six siblings, Herman 'Buddy,' Meta, Brandt, Leo, Carrol and Lila. Her parents also adopted her sister Lila's daughter, Cheryl, after she died at the age of 30.

She grew up on her parents' ranch on the East Fork River, where her nephew Doc and his family still live. During her early years, when there were no modern conveniences like electricity or running water, the family was snowbound from January to April each winter. Her mother did laundry on a washboard, heating water on a woodstove in a copper boiler. Weekly Saturday night baths were taken in a round galvanized washtub, with everyone using the same water, starting with the smallest and moving up to the largest. In the early 1930s, her father purchased a windcharger generator and batteries. The family also advanced to using a gas engine washing machine and refrigerator. Entertainment consisted of listening to the Atwater Kent radio and attending dances at Emerson and New Fork schools and Woodman Hall in Pinedale.

She made paper dolls created by cutting out figures from old catalogs. She and her siblings traveled to a one-room schoolhouse on a one-horse toboggan. All eight grades, consisting of a dozen children total, were taught by one teacher. During winter months, ink in the inkwells would freeze.

She married Earl Steele on Nov. 30, 1941, in a double ceremony with her brother Carrol and his new bride, Letty. Mrs. Steele and her husband had three children, Sharon, who shared a birthday with her mother in 1943; Gordon 'Pete,' born Sept. 29, 1944; and Rhonda, born Jan. 22, 1951.

They purchased the ranch belonging to husband's parents, John and Edith Steele, in 1945 and lived there until 1949, when they purchased the Boulder Store from Harold Faler. During the time they ran the store, her husband worked other jobs, ranching for Henry and Bill Hittle and driving a truck for Pat Johnson. Mrs. Steele worked at the store, often cooking meals for friends who were in the store at closing time. They ran the store until early 1971, when they semi retired and turned the store over to their son Pete. Her husband and son contracted haying jobs while she continued to work in the store for Pete and his wife, Donna. Determined to spend 50 years working at the store, Mrs. Steele continued to work for her daughter-in-law until 1999, when she finally retired at age 78.

During the summer she and her husband would take their grandchildren, a couple of dogs and once a kitten and go camping in a little Road Runner camper. The camping came to an end when her husband died on March 2, 1978. Mrs. Steele continued to picnic when she could with family and friends. She would also host winter picnics, typically conducted beside the road since there were few turnouts back in the 1950s. She would also go driving with her grandchildren.

Her other hobbies included cooking, crocheting, and creating plastic canvas articles.

In September 2007, Mrs. Steele fell and injured her back, ending her picnics and sightseeing drives. She rented an apartment at Sublette Center. Another fall that November put her in the medical wing. Her health steadily declined prior to her death.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Lary Lozier and Rhonda and Garland Swain; daughter-in-law and friend, Donna Steele and Ray Gentry; 10 grandchildren, Shelby Lozier Wiggins and husband Ronnie, Alice Lozier, Taylene Lozier Bell and husband Roger, Burke Steele and wife Ruth, Brian Steele, Tony Steele and wife Tracy, Jamie Swain and wife Deanne, Bill Swain and wife Jeanette, Ty Swain, Tiffany Swain Olson and husband Clay; 11 great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jordan and Mandi Bell, TJ and Thayne Steele, Jon, Josh and Kaylee Barnett, Garrett and Mya Swain and Libby Olson; and an adopted sister, Cheryl Kelly.
