Bernard Pustek
Bernard “Bernie” Pustek, 63, of Gillette died Sunday, July 20, 2003, in Sheridan VA Medical Center of natural causes. He worked 12 years for Metz Beverage Co. of Sheridan. Vigil service was this morning at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette with the Rev. Peri Moses of St. Matthew's Catholic Church officiating. Flag presentation was by American Legion Post 42. Burial will be at a later date in Gillette-Mount Pisgah cemetery. Mass of Christian Burial will be 8:15 a.m. Aug. 11 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Griffith, Ind. Mr. Pustek was born June 17, 1940, to Stephen and Mary (Broneck) Pustek in Whiting, Ind. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He moved to Gillette in 1980. Survivors include six brothers, Steven of Griffith, James of Big Bear, Calif., Gerald of Golden, Colo., and William, Donald and David, all of Whiting; four sisters, Crystal Kurek and Joyce Nagy, both of Dyer, Ind., Susan Bissett of Demontt, Ind., and Mary Beth Jezuit of Chicago; and his fiance, Joy Richards of Sheridan. Lucille M. Wilson
A memorial service for Lucille M. Wilson, 91, Sheridan, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Sheridan with Pastor John Graham officiating. Mrs. Wilson died Thursday, May 8, 2003, in Sheridan Manor.
Inurnment of cremains will be in Masonic No. 43 section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Elizabeth O. Horn
Elizabeth O. “Liz” Horn, 89, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Upton with Pastor Randy Fowler officiating. Burial will be in Upton Greenwood cemetery. Arrangements are with Worden Funeral Directors. Mrs. Horn was born April 5, 1914, to Dillard and Elsie Lester on a homestead north of Moorcroft. She grew up and attended schools in the area. She married
Harold W. Campbell June 6, 1936, in Moorcroft. He died Aug. 27, 1941. She worked alongside her parents on the family's dairy and sheep ranch west of Moorcroft for much of her young adult life. She later attended Black Hills Teachers College and taught first- through eighth-grade classes at the Thorne Divide School near Moorcroft. She married
Donald Horn Sept. 22, 1956, in Moorcroft. He died in 1998. She moved to Sheridan. She was a church pianist for 28 years and taught private piano lessons. Her passion was gardening, especially roses. She was an avid seamstress. Survivors include a daughter, Rosalie Brimmer of Moorcroft; a son, Harold Campbell of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Frances Gillis
Frances Kathleen (Brantz) Gillis, 81, of Sheridan died Saturday, July 19, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Bruce M. Jennings Jr.
Bruce M. Jennings Jr., 88, of Sheridan died Friday, July 18, 2003, at his home. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in the columbarium of First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Jennings was born Aug. 29, 1914, in Davilla, Texas, to Bruce M. and Anna (Hine) Jennings Sr. He grew up in Davilla and graduated from Rogers High School. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in East Texas for a time. He was a graduate of Texas Tech in Lubbock, with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He married
Berneice Locke Nov. 12, 1946, in Enid, Okla. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and saw all his sons become Eagle Scouts. He worked for Mobil Oil for 37 years until 1974, when he retired and moved to Sheridan. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge 520, Wyoming Weapons Collectors and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and collecting Charles Newton rifles. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce Jennings III and Gordon Jene Jennings; one sister; an infant son; and an infant daughter. Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; a son, Charles of Deweyville, Utah; three daughters, Maribeth Plocek of Casper, Joan Nelson of Honeyville, Utah, and Beverly Sanderlin of New Hampshire; a sister, Ruth Allday of Odessa, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Eugene Eckroth
Eugene Eckroth, 81, of Sheridan died Friday, July 18, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Holy Name Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Eckroth was born Oct. 31, 1921, in Mandan, N.D., to George and Beatrice (Kautzman) Eckroth. He attended Jamestown College on a full basketball scholarship. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in May 1940 and attended Officers Candidate School at Fort Sill, Okla., graduating in September 1942. He participated in the Guadalcanal and Luzon campaigns in the Pacific as an officer in the 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Division, 6th Army. He served in the Army Reserve in Montana and National Guard in Wyoming after the war. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Wyoming National Guard in 1973. He received the Wyoming National Guard Distinguished Service Medal as battalion commander for the 1-49 Field Artillery Battalion. He graduated from Montana State University with a master's degree in agronomy. He married
Elizabeth “Betty” Labrie Sept. 11, 1946. He enjoyed watching sports and politics. He was a life member of the Elks Club and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus and the Secular Order of St. Frances. He was preceded in death by a brother, Peter. Survivors include three daughters, Susan Adams of Billings, Colleen Larsen of Casper and Kerry Zolg of Westminister, Calif.; two sons, James of Casper and David of Billings; a brother, Henry “Buck,” and a sister, Virginia Boehm, both of Mandan; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Stephen Will
Elvezio Stephen Will, 80, of Buffalo died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at his residence. He was father of Steve G. Will of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today and 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel. Mr. Will was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Monte Carasso, Switzerland, to Charley and Louise Will. The family moved to America in 1926, and Mr. Will spent his childhood on the Will Brothers dryland ranch at Nine Mile southeast of Buffalo. He attended rural schools in Johnson County and completed his freshman and sophomore years in Lemoore, Calif. He was a 1940 graduate of Johnson County High School. He was active in FFA. Dorothy Hepp Sept. 26, 1942, in Billings. They made their home on the Greub Ranch north of Buffalo. They worked on various ranches for several years and leased a ranch and dairy farm at Prairie Dog for many years before taking over the Will Brothers irrigated ranch south of Buffalo in the 1970s. Mr. Will was a member of the National Rifle Association and a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997; a son, Dave; and a sister, Alma Billingsley. In addition to his son, survivors include a daughter, Linda McKenzie of Buffalo; a sister, Mary Osborn of Buffalo; a brother, Frank of Buffalo; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Jack M. Woodard
Jack Martin Woodard, 84, of Sheridan died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Anne Rita (Juroshek) Jan. 10, 1948, in the Episcopal church in Sheridan. Mr. Martin enjoyed hunting, fishing and baking for friends. He loved horses and his two dogs. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Earl. Survivors include a daughter, Karen of Sheridan; and several nieces and nephews. Erma Guyot Kirby, 94, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Kirby was born Jan. 25, 1909, in Newcastle to Henry and Rachel (Harte) Guyot. She attended school in Sheridan and in Edgemont, S.D., where she graduated from high school in 1927. She was a graduate of Peru State Teacher's College in Peru, Neb., and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Wyoming. She married
Kenneth E. Kirby Feb. 7, 1931, in Hardin, Mont. She taught school for 42 years, 12 in Lusk and 30 in Sheridan School District 2. She retired in 1974. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the National Education and Wyoming Education associations, Delta Kappa Gamma, Naomi Chapter 2 Order of the Eastern Star, Sahida Temple Daughters of the Nile, the American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Noel and Charles. Survivors include three nephews, Gerald Guyot of Gold Beach, Ore., and Michael and Pat Guyot, both of Everett, Wash.; and a goddaughter, Joyce Carroll of Sheridan. Dana G. Mauch
Dana G. Mauch, 85, of Sheridan died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in his residence. Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Mauch was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Wellesley, Mass., to Gilbert and Louise (Farnsworth) Mauch. He grew up in Waban, Mass., and graduated from Newton High School. He graduated from Babson College with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He later graduated from Wentworth Institute. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust and was chief investment officer when he retired. He married
Helyne Eisele in Massachusetts in the mid-1970s. They moved to Story in 1976 and later moved into Sheridan. Mr. Mauch was an avid golfer and member of the country club in Massachusetts and of the Sheridan Country Club. He was vice chairman of the board of First National Bank in Sheridan. He enjoyed the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2002. Survivors include two sons, Dana Jr. of Cumberland, Mass., and Donald A. of Norwell, Mass.; a daughter, Barbara Ann Hyde of Bar Harbor, Maine; and six grandchildren.
Samuel L. Funk
Former Sheridan resident Samuel Lee Funk, 51, of Ekalaka, Mont., died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Funk was born Dec. 1, 1951, in Plevna, Mont., to Ernest L. and Ada (Best) Funk. He grew up and attended schools in Ekalaka and was a 1970 graduate of Ekalaka High School. He joined the U.S. Army after graduation and served in Vietnam. He returned to the Ekalaka and Baker areas in Montana and worked in construction. He married
Nancy Schimming in Baker in 1974. They owned the Old Sand Bar in Ekalaka from 1976 until 1985, when Mr. Funk sold the bar and moved to Las Vegas. He moved to Cody in 1994 and to Sheridan in 1998. He returned to Ekalaka in 2002. He enjoyed reading and sports and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include a daughter, Heidi Stebbins of Cody; a brother, Michael Gillie of Oregon; and two grandchildren.
Orville M. Wright
Orville Mearl Wright, 93, of Sheridan died Monday, July 14, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bull Creek cemetery on the South Fork in Cody. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Wright was born Nov. 25, 1909, to William Earl and Bessie (Jinks) Wright on the family farm northwest of Blue Mound, Kan. He attended school in Stanton County, Kan., and later moved to Linn County. He moved to Cody in 1938 and worked on the J Bar 9 Ranch. He moved to Sheridan in 1949 and worked on various ranches, including the T Bar T, Triangle T and Sage, until he retired. He loved horses, ranching and exploring the back country in the Big Horn Mountains. He also enjoyed hunting, rodeo and gardening and was a member of the Elks Club since 1955. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Ralph, Raymond (“Slim”), Melva, Eldon and Norvin. Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Channel; a son, Jerry; two sisters, Lucille Hutchens of Pilot Mountain, N.C. and Maxine Jernberg of Cody; three grandchildren; and eight nephews.
Alice I. Christianson
Sheridan County native Alice Irene (Lorah) Christianson, 87, of Douglas died Monday, July 14, 2003, in the Michael Manor Nursing Home in Douglas. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with Pastor Mike Carlton officiating. Mrs. Christianson was born Jan. 30, 1916, to Margaret and Alva Lorah on the family homestead near Arvada. She grew up on the family ranch. She married
Donald “Chris” Christianson in 1948 in Greeley, Colo. They lived in various communities in Wyoming, including Casper for 35 years. They moved to Douglas in 1997. Mr. Christianson died in 1998. Mrs. Christianson enjoyed her grandchildren, crocheting, country music and watching country dancing on television. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hoblit; nine brothers and sisters; and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Alva Hoblit of Sheridan and Dale Christianson of Casper; a daughter, Cindy Grinstead of Douglas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Alfred H. Talcott
Alfred H. “Ab” Talcott, 91, of Sheridan died Friday, July 11, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services were this morning at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Messianic Pastor Hale Harris of Beth Ephraim Messianic Israel Congregation officiating. Burial was in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Talcott was born May 22, 1912, in Central Valley, N.Y., to August Belmont Talcott Jr. and Marguerite Lena (Schick) Talcott. He drove beer wagons and worked at Eatons' Ranch as a cook. He served in the U.S. Cavalry from 1933-35 and helped build confinement camps during World War II. He married
Grace J. O'Dell Sept. 26, 1936, in Hardin, Mont. He worked with his brothers as a housepainter in Sheridan for most of his life. He enjoyed visiting friends and family and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a lifetime member of the Painters and Drywall Finishers Union. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, a sister and two brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Janet Rodgers and Abbie Richardson, and a brother, August “Aug,” all of Sheridan; a sister, Lorraine Brogna of Hemet, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. E. Keith Salisbury
E. Keith Salisbury, 80, of Sheridan died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Sneve officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery with Elks Lodge 520 presiding. Mr. Salisbury was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Sheridan to Lloyd and Avon (Pence) Salisbury. He grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan. He returned to Sheridan after the service. He married
Doris Rose in 1950. He worked at the Sheridan VA Medical Center until 1974, when he retired. He coached Little League baseball, was a Scout master and was a volunteer fireman in Big Horn for several years. He was an organizing member of the American Federation of Government Employees Union in Sheridan. His wife died in 1974. Mr. Salisbury married
Edith Geer in 1988. He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed hunting, bowling, dancing and travel. He was a member of the AFGE, Elks Lodge 520 and American Legion Post 7. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Richard of Tucson, Ariz.; a twin brother, Kenneth of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Linda A. Sales
Linda Aversano Sales, 55, of Sheridan died Monday, July 7, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. A gathering of family and friends will be 11 a.m. today at Mrs. Sales' home, 1309 Bowman Ave. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Sales was born Sept. 23, 1947, in Seattle to Anthony and Nellie (Lucero) Aversano. She grew up in southern California and graduated from Lennox (Calif.) High School and the University of Wyoming. She came to Sheridan in 1971. She worked at the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce several years and was a substitute teacher at Sheridan High School. She worked for several businesses before going to work at Wal-Mart. She married
Don Sales in 1978 in Hawaii. They later divorced. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing, collecting antiques and seashells, the outdoors, motorcycles, music and dancing. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Mike. Survivors include a son, Rob of Spearfish, S.D.; a daughter, Chris Dettmers of Denver; her mother of Denver; two brothers, Pat Aversano of Lakewood, Colo., and Victor Aversano of Denver; and her grandmother, Cecilia Sandoval of Dinuba, Calif. James W. Smith
James W. Smith, 85, Sheridan, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, the Revs. Terry Wall and Joe Wolf officiating. Burial is 2:30 p.m. Monday at Oregon Trail cemetery in Evansville. Born Oct. 28, 1917, in Whitesburg, Pa., to Frank and Vera (McKee) Smith, he graduated from Elderton (Pa.) High School and attended Grove City (Pa.) College. Mr. Smith entered the Army in 1940 and served in the India-Burma Theater until 1946. He returned to Elderton in 1947 and married
Audrey Christy on June 14, 1947, in Monateau, Pa. He erected gas rigs and bought a farm in Pennsylvania in 1947. The couple moved in 1965 to Newcastle, where he was a carpenter and managed the employment service office. He also worked a short time at the post office. He was a Farm Bureau agent from 1968 until retiring in 1979. The Smiths moved to Sheridan in 1993. A life member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Reformed Presbyterian Church, he enjoyed RV travel, reading, and his family. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ralph Smith, Wheatland, and Richard “Red” Smith, Dayton; two daughters, Kathy Kehl, Douglas, and Karen Zerbst, Shell; two brothers, Byron Smith, Bethel Park, Pa., and Donald Smith, Alaska; four sisters, Delnora Hanley and Winifred Henderson, both of Florida, Donna Dean Taylor, Clarion, Pa., and Vivian Lemke, Fallbrook, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Gerald W. Slater
Gerald Woodrow Slater, 88, of Sheridan died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be 7-8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Mr. Slater was born Feb. 21, 1915, in Sheridan to George and AnneBelle (Sepal) Slater. He attended Big Horn and Sheridan schools. He worked on a ranch in 1931. He married
Helen Krezelok Oct. 16, 1936. They were married
66 years until her death. He worked on a dairy farm and for Sheridan Coal Co. before being employed by Mid Continent Oil for 24 years. He began working at Champion Funeral Home in 1971. He was a member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520 for 28 years and was 1991-92 Elk of the Year. He was a member of Oddfellows 19. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, attending lodge meetings and raising flowers. In addition to his wife, Mr. Slater was preceded in death by a brother, James, and a grandson, Byron Schilling. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley E. Schilling of Casper and Judy A. LANDER — Former Sheridan resident Leona Lee McLain Irion Holbert, 85, of Lander died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 in Lander Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Holbert was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Mulvane, Kan., to Charles Rae McLain and Ora Lee (Newton) McLain. Stanley “Tim” Irion in 1938; they later divorced. She moved to Sheridan in 1954. She married
Charles “Chuck” Holbert in 1956. They lived in Sheridan until 1988. They moved to Lander to be with Mrs. Holbert's daughter and her family. Mrs. Holbert enjoyed flowers, birds and being with her family. She was preceded in death by Mr. Holbert, two brothers, one sister and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Koltiska of Lander; a sister, Willene “Auntie” Shenk of Billings; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. Cody Lee Holt
Cody Lee Holt, 15, of Sheridan died Friday, July 4, 2003, in an automobile accident near Billings. Viewing will be 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Holt was born April 12, 1988, in Sheridan to Ron L. Holt and Heidi Rene Lawrence. He moved with his mother to Paradise, Calif., when he was 4 years old. They returned to Sheridan three years ago. He was attending Central Middle School at the time of his death. He enjoyed snowboarding, skateboarding, floating Goose Creek, music, video games and being with his friends. Survivors include his father of Sheridan and Gillette; his mother of Sheridan; an older brother, Chuck Gilmore of Sheridan; three sisters, Kira Lawrence and Amanda Gilmore, both of Sheridan, and Jessica Lee Holt of Moses Lake, Wash.; and grandparents Bill and Ginger Lawrence.
