Winifred Tavegia
Winifred Tavegia, 82, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. She was mother of Pat Baker of rural Sheridan. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Friday at Greenwood cemetery in Newcastle with the Rev. Leslie Barnett officiating. A gathering of family and friends is from 7-9 p.m. today at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle. Mrs. Tavegia was born Nov. 15, 1920, in Warrensburg, Mo., to Oscar and Irene (Richardson) Butcher. The family moved to Osage, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Newcastle High School, then attended Black Hills Teaching College in Spearfish, S.D. She taught elementary school in Osage for three years. She married
Merle Tavegia in Hardin, Mont., March 14, 1944. After he was discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945, they moved to the ranch, where they went into partnership with his dad, Harry. They ranched until Merle's death in 1988. Survivors in addition to her daughter include a son, Harry, of Osage; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials are suggested to Skull Creek Ladies Club.
Ferne F. Willey
Sheridan native Ferne F. Willey, 88, of Stevensville, Mont., died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, Mont. She had lived at the Bitterroot Living Center in Stevensville since June. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday at Champion Funeral Home in Sheridan. Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn with Alan Barnett officiating. Mrs. Willey was born July 28, 1914, in Sheridan to Frank E. and Maude (Filmore) Harris. Her family ranched on Wolf Creek, where she attended grade school. She attended Ranchester High School and earned her teaching certificate at Normal School in Billings. She married
Jack Willey. They owned several ranches in Montana. They later divorced. She married
Jesse Gorman, and they lived on his ranch on lower Prairie Dog. After his death, she moved to the Big Horn area. She was active in the Cattlewomen's organization in Montana and Wyoming. She especially loved Hereford cattle and painted them on items for fund-raisers. She remarried
Jack Willey in 1979. They were caretakers for the Park Reservoir for three years. In addition to her second husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Merle Shreve, Ruth Harris and Mollie Frye; a brother, Elmo; husband Jack; and two sons, George and Dennis. Survivors include a son, Reid of Corvallis, Mont.; a daughter Edna Madsen, of Ellensburg, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. John L. Behles
John L. Behles, 68, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Victoria, Texas. Vigil services are 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy is 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Thomas Ogg as celebrant. Burial will be in the Elk's Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery with military rites by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post No. 7. Carrie A. Creager, 91, of Glenrock died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Glenrock Assembly of God Church. Agnes C. Baumgartner
Agnes C. Baumgartner, 96, formerly of Buffalo, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Rosary services are 6 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Mrs. Baumgartner was born June 28, 1906, in Holbrook, Iowa, to Norah (Slattery) Smith and John Joseph Smith. She was 10 when the family headed west and bought Copp's Ranch in Ucross. She finished the ninth grade there. In 1923, the family moved to Power River. She finished high school in Buffalo and attended Heiman's Business College in Sheridan. In 1926, she returned from Casper, where she had kept house for her father after her mother's death. In 1928, she married
Henry Baumgartner. They lived and worked with Agnes' father until buying the George Nottingham Ranch, where they raised sheep and cattle for many years. In 1956, the couple moved to Clearmont due to Henry's health. He died in 1959, and Agnes moved to Buffalo in 1978. She enjoyed reading, painting, and cooking for others and was known as a gracious hostess who loved her family. She was preceded in death by a son, James, six sisters and two brothers in addition to her husband. Survivors include sons Tim of Buffalo and Larry of Sheridan; one sister, Mrs. Carl Knudson of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Elizabeth Beckley MacMackin, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in Arvada, Colo. Mrs. MacMackin was born Jan. 29, 1917, in Sheridan to Jesse L. and Anna M. Beckley. She attended Holy Name School and Sheridan High School and worked for several years at the Sheridan post office. She married
Carleton MacMackin in early 1942. Survivors include two sons, Peter of Littleton, Colo., and Stephen of Arvada, Colo.; a sister, Jo Beckley of San Francisco; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

M.J. “Andy” Anderson, 78, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Viewing is until 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home and 1-2 p.m. Tuesday in the Latter-day Saints Church in Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Latter-day Saints Church with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Lead, S.D., to Andrew and Rhoda Lucille Anderson. He grew up and graduated from high school in Bell, Calif. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served four years as pharmacist's mate first class. He was discharged with honors. He attended Compton (Calif.) College and the Don Martin School of Radio and Television. He married
Glenna M. Twist soon after. They settled in Sheridan in 1980. He produced the Sunday morning “Big Band Show” on KROE radio and volunteered at the Information Center. He enjoyed painting. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; three sons, Phillip Anderson of Denver, Doug Cazier of Laurel, Mont., and Darrell Cazier of Billings; four daughters, Diana Cook of Billings, Dorothy Hindman of Belgrade, Mont., Cheri McNalley of Tampa Bay, Fla., and Candice Braley of Sheridan; a brother, Harold of Dana Point, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Eleanor Shurter
Eleanor L. Shurter, 77, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing is until 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Grace Lutheran Church in Hanna with Pastor William Heine officiating. Burial will be in Hanna cemetery. Mrs. Shurter was born June 7, 1925, in Ironwood Townships, Mich., to John and Mary (Saari) Kleimola. She grew up and attended schools in Ironwood. She married
Frank Shurter in Ironwood Aug. 28, 1943. They moved to Hanna in 1955 and to Sheridan in 1977. Mrs. Shurter was a volunteer caller for blood donations for five years with Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She was a longtime member of the Genealogy Society and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed genealogy, knitting, crocheting, traveling, baking and music. She enjoyed ice skating as a teenager. She was preceded in death by a son, grandson, sister and six brothers. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Frank of Sheridan and Kenneth of Laramie; two daughters, Mary Lothamer and Patricia Pendleton, both of Sheridan; a brother, Frank Kleimola of Jackson, Mich.; two sisters, Minnie Chimento of Bessemer, Mich., and Hilma Carlson of Hanna; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Paul McInerney Jr.
Paul L. McInerney Jr., 76, of Spearfish, S.D., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, after a long illness. His wife is the former Carol Stearns Battenfield of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the 7 Down Arena east of Spearfish. Viewing will be 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday in Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Mr. McInerney was married
in 1972 in Sheridan. The couple lived in Spearfish and O'Neill Pass, S.D. Other survivors include two daughters, Lea Stodart of Edgemont, S.D., and Paula Hall of Lead, S.D.; a son, Mike of Gillette; and eight grandchildren. A memorial has been established with arrangements by Fidler Funeral Chapel.

Former longtime Sheridan resident Ferne Willey, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, in Stevensville, Mont. Arrangements are pending, according to a family member.
Eldon Hovelsrud
Former Sheridan resident Eldon John Hovelsrud, 73, of Casper died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, in Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Casper with Father Roy Baker officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Trail Veterans cemetery in Evansville with military honors by the Natrona County United Veterans Council. Viewing is until 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home & Crematory of Casper. Mr. Hovelsrud was born Aug. 9, 1929, in Meadow Grove, Neb., to Ole and Mary (Dohse) Hovelsrud. He served in the U.S. merchant marine during the 1940s and with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a 1960 graduate of the University of South Dakota (Vermillion) with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He worked as a geologist for Big Horn Coal in Sheridan and later as a geologist for Arch Mineral Corp. and a real estate agent with Century 21 in Casper. He married
Lavonne Clements Nov. 26, 1975, in Rawlins. He was a member of Elks, American Legion and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed hunting, reloading and related shooting sports, reading, collecting rocks and listening to music. Survivors include his wife of Casper; six children, Angie Gilbert, Cynthia Goda, Rondi Grauberger, Tamara DeJongh, Dan Clements and Tressa Tystad; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gale Kinzer, 88, of Sheridan died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is until 5 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Kinzer was born Feb. 4, 1914, near Maquon, Ill., to Cary and Mary (Kinnaman) Kinzer. He grew up and attended schools in Illinois. He married
Maxine Watkins Jan. 18, 1946, in Hardin, Mont. They moved to Sheridan in 1947. Mr. Kinzer owned and operated a trucking company until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Eagles Lodge 186 and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eldon. Survivors include a stepson, John Landon of Meeteetse; a sister, Glennadean Carol Onion of Biggsville, Ill.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Philip Gifford
Philip R. Gifford Sr., 79, of Sheridan died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Gifford was born June 30, 1923, in Parkman. He attended Holy Name School and was a 1943 graduate of Sheridan High School. He entered the Navy submarine fleet, serving on the USS Narwhal SS-167 in the South Pacific and the Philippines from 1943 until his discharge in 1946. He married
Maxine Bilyeu Dec. 31, 1947. Mr. Gifford worked 13 years for The Sheridan Press as a typesetter and, with his wife and relatives, operated the Arrowhead Lodge Restaurant for a short period. He left The Press to pursue carpentry. He owned and operated a general contracting company until he retired. He built and remodeled many homes and businesses in Sheridan, Buffalo and surrounding areas. He loved to cook, garden, follow the Wyoming Cowboy football and basketball teams, camp, hunt and fish in the Big Horn Mountains, travel and play keno. He lived in the VA Nursing Home the past two years. He was a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Claudia K. Plachek; two brothers, Gene and Charles; and four sisters, Josephine Bohlin, Florence Brandt, Ella Neva and Irene Kehrwald. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; four sons, Philip Jr., Rodney and Edward, all of Sheridan, and Richard of Rock Springs; five granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. Dorothy Mae Ream, 82, of Sheridan died Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Services will be at a later date at the Osheim Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Burial will be in Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Ream was born April 2, 1921, in Miles City, Mont., to Harvey and Margaret (Williams) Moore. She grew up and attended schools in South Dakota. She was an office manager for an insurance agency in Rapid City. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening and traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle. Survivors include a son, J.T. BUFFALO — Keith Ruby, 70, of Buffalo died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, in Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. Edward Barbula June 22, 1940, in Monarch. The couple owned Bruno's Nightclub. Mrs. Barbula enjoyed embroidery and dancing and loved spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Louis Gazdik. Survivors include a son, John of Ranchester; a daughter, Shirley Johnson of Sheridan; two sisters, Betty E. Berta of Sheridan and Mary Berta of Georgia; a brother, Charles Gazdik of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Edwin Lawler
Edwin Arnold Lawler, 93, of Meeteetse died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at his residence. He was father of Susan Hixon of Ranchester. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Meeteetse Baptist Church. A reception will be at Lucille's Cafe in Meeteetse after services. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Riverside cemetery in Thermopolis. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon at Mortimore Funeral Home of Thermopolis and 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday in the Meeteetse Baptist Church. Mr. Lawler was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Hebron, Neb., to John C. and Mabel Helfer Lawler. He moved to Meeteetse in the 1930s. He married
Valaria Cammock July 21, 1938, in Thermopolis. They moved to Meeteetse in 1948, where they leased and later purchased a gas station. Mr. Arnold moved the Chuckwagon Cafe from Cody to Meeteetse in 1956 and operated it alongside his gas station as Lawler's Service and Cafe. He ranched in the Meeteetse and Sheridan areas from 1969 to 1973. He was a guide for many years. He retired in 1985, and he and Mrs. Lawler moved to Thermopolis. Mrs. Lawler died in 1994, and Mr. Lawler returned to Meeteetse in 1995. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Thermopolis and active with the Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed pinochle, the outdoors, wildlife, hunting and horses. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and John, and three sisters, Thelma, Dorothy and Grace. Survivors include five other daughters Reta Collins of Cody, Joyce Neal of Wyola, Mont., Janet Keeler of Monroe, Ore., Sharon Desjarlais of Billings, and Isabel Kershaw of McMinnville, Ore.; two sons, John of Powell and Charles of Meeteetse; three sisters, Laurine Nunn and Deryce Reed, both of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Romona Horner of Crawford, Neb.; a brother, Albert Lawler of Portland, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Fred Frigo Oct. 28, 1939. They moved to Sheridan in 1948. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Albert. Survivors include a son, Ray of Sheridan; a daughter, Nancy Dunning of Denver; three sisters, Margaret Trentacosti of Sheridan, Anne Mossberg of Homewood, Ill., and Lorraine Scobee of Spearfish, S.D.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
William Wilson
Former Sheridan area resident William Ely Wilson, 86, of Corvallis, Ore., died Sunday, April 6, 2003. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Willamette National cemetery in Portland, Ore. Arrangements are with DeMoss-Durdan Funeral Home of Corvallis. Mr. Wilson served with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, Bullshooters Club of Sheridan and the Story Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Marion; two daughters, JoAnne Walstad of Corvallis and Billie Conover of Edinburg, N.J.; a son, William E. Jr. of Ewing, N.J.; and a sister, Virginia Morgan, and a brother, Walt, both of New Jersey.

Mrs. Nussbacher was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Kooi to Frank and Mary (Wojtyla) Boyko. She married
Paul Nussbacher. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Nussbacher enjoyed dancing, gardening, taking care of the wild animals around her home, cooking, listening to music, socializing with friends, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing cards. She belonged to Big Horn Mountain Polka Club, Big Horn Woman's Club, Big Horn Historical Society, Old Time Musicians and BPO Does. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Engdahl; three sisters, Anna, Mary and Frances; and two brothers, George and John. Survivors include a longtime companion and friend, John Gentry of Big Horn; a daughter, L. Jean Byrtus; two brothers, Frank Boyko of Sheridan and Joe Boyko of Worland; a sister, Lois Etchechoury of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
