BUFFALO — Margaret Searcy, 64, of Buffalo died suddenly at her residence Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002. Visitation will be in Adams Funeral Home Chapel 1-10 p.m. today and 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Private burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Senior Center in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Claudia Manz

Claudia L. Manz, 102, of Sheridan died Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial of cremains will be in the Masonic Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Manz was born Nov. 2, 1900, in Wellington, Mo., to George and Anna Caroline (Breuer) Lay. She married Arthur Manz Jan. 19, 1925, in Littleton, Colo. They moved to Sheridan, where he worked for the railroad. Mrs. Manz lived in Sheridan for more than 65 years and worked as a clerk at several stores including the New York Store (later Stevens Fryberger Co.), J.C. Penney and Humphreys. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in PEO. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and four brothers. Survivors include one brother, George Lay of Aerola, Colo.; four sisters, Hanna Elder of Loma, Colo., Mary Gregory of Salem, Ill., Elizabeth Belmear of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Alice Randol of Cortez, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Senior Citizen's Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Beverly Adkins

Beverly Jean Adkins, 67, of Sheridan died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at her residence. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Adkins was born Oct. 15, 1935, to Lester and Bernice (Patterson) Zeirlien in Orange, Calif. She was chosen at age 17 to work as secretary in Washington, D.C., for a Wyoming senator. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wyoming and began a teaching career that spanned more than 20 years in three states. She also received a master of education degree from UW. She retired to Sheridan in 1995. She was a member of the National and Wyoming education associations and enjoyed sewing, computers, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on Oct. 15. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Smith of Sheridan and Robin Smith of Salt Lake City; a sister, Roberta Zeirlien of Sheridan; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Margaret Stroup

Margaret Stroup, 98, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited 7:30 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Stroup was born Nov. 18, 1904, in Swan Lake, Minn., to Jacob and Mary (Giefer) Miesen. She earned a teaching degree after graduating from high school, and taught for about five years. She married Harry A. Stroup in Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan. She went back to school in 1954 to get a business degree, then worked as a legal secretary for 16 years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Holy Name Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She worked in the Thrift Shop and enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, crocheting, puzzles and flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Harold; and two daughters, Dorothy Shreve and Eilene Stroup. Survivors include three sons, Jack and Ray, both of Sheridan, and Ned of Gillette; a daughter, Alice Fisher of Garfield, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Claudia Manz

Claudia L. Manz, 102, of Sheridan died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in Sheridan Manor. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Burial of cremains will be in the Masonic Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery.

Lillian Himes

BUFFALO — Lillian Himes, 90, of Buffalo died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in the Amie Holt Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Su Debree officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Senior Center in care of Adams Funeral Home.

Donald Moser

Donald W. Moser, 72, of Berne, Ind., died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003. He was father of Dianne Bramwell of Sheridan. Funeral services were at Cross United Church of Christ in Berne. Burial was in the MRE cemetery in Berne. Mr. Moser was born Jan. 25, 1930, to Franklin and Evelyn (Love) Moser. He married Kathleen Kauffman April 29, 1948. He owned and operated R&D Trucker until he retired. He was a Democratic member of his county council for 12 years, a member of Cross United Church of Christ and former member of the church consistory. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul William. Survivors in addition to his daughter include his wife; three sons, Randy, Doug and Reid, all of Berne; a brother, Richard F. of Bluffton, Ind.; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan.

Thomas Hunt

Thomas Hunt, 55, Sheridan, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. The family encourages his Vietnam-veteran brothers to attend. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National cemetery, Sturgis, S.D. Mr. Hunt was born Nov. 28, 1947, in Hurst, Ill., to Frank and Jeanette (Tripp) Hunt. He served in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam and was discharged in 1968. He was a motorcycle enthusiast who also enjoyed camping, saddlery and building models. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Tia Hunt. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ian Hunt, Sheridan; and two grandchildren.

Felix Sowada

Felix Sowada, 91, of Sheridan died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Kenneth Melton

GILLETTE — Funeral Services for Kenneth James Melton, 49, are 11 a.m.Monday at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Gillette, Wyoming, with Pastor Martin Crump officiating. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sundayat the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, Gillette.Mr. Melton died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Odessa of natural causes. He was born Aug. 8, 1953, in Clinton, Ark., to Neil and Paula Bingham. As a toddler he and his family moved to El Paso where he was raised and educated. Following high school he attended trade school in Fort Worth earning his certification in mechanics. After school he moved to Billings to pursue his career in a machine shop. There he married Cindy Shima. They later divorced. In 1987 he moved to Sheridan and worked for IPGI, where he was part of creating the first hard chrome facility in Wyoming. In Sheridan, he met Katie Panetta; they married April 6, 1990 in Deadwood, S.D. In late 1992, the couple moved to Gillette, where he began working for EMS. Survivors include his wife Katie, of Gillette; his son, Tyler Eugene of Gillette; daughter Shawna Marie of Salt Lake City, Utah; his father, Neil, of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Mickey Joe; and a sister, Sue. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother. Memorials are suggested in Ken's name and can be sent to Stevenson Funeral Home, 210 West 5th Street, Gillette, Wyoming 82716.Home.

Clella Landis

Clella L. Landis, 89, of Sheridan died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan with the Rev. Heather Bartlow officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Landis was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Pottowattamie County, Iowa, to Guy and Grace (Hobson) Lathen. She attended school in Iowa and was a 1932 graduate of Elliott (Iowa) High School. She was a 1934 graduate of the Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Neb. She married Walter E. Landis Oct. 25, 1935. They moved to Sheridan in 1939. She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Sheridan, a member of Chapter A.B. of the P.E.O. and a member of the medical and hospital auxiliaries for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking and collecting cookbooks and was an avid walker. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Landis Meyer of Ranchester; three sisters, Cereise Woodworth of Cheyenne, Bette McLuen of Spokane, Wash., and Patricia Thompson of West Des Moines, Iowa; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 2121 Colonial Drive, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Felipa Cortez

Former Clearmont resident Felipa Cortez, 90, of Buffalo, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Johnson County Health Care Center. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in the church with Father Charles Taylor officiating. Graveside services will be in Willow Grove cemetery, Buffalo, following the Mass. Mrs. Cortez was born May 20, 1912, in Mexico. She moved to Houston as a child and was raised by friends of the family. She married Antonio Cortez in 1925 in Casper. They lived there for a short time until moving to Clearmont, where Mr. Cortez worked for the Lawrence ranch. They moved to Buffalo in 1938. Mr. Cortez died in 1972. Mrs. Cortez enjoyed gardening and crocheting. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Pete. Survivors include two sons, Tony Jr. of Casper and Luciano “Mike” of Buffalo; two daughters, Mickey Ridgeway of Denver and Julia Pierson of Pennsylvania; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Jerome Sorensen

BUFFALO — Jerome Henry Sorensen, 95, of Buffalo died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, in Amie Holt Care Center. Private graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Arrangements are with Adams Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Senior Center in care of the funeral home.

Thomas Hunt, 55, of Sheridan died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Margaret Chance

RANCHESTER — Former Ranchester resident Margaret Chance, 95, of Gillette died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson Funeral Home in Gillette with Father Karl Millis of St. Matthew's Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Stevenson Funeral Home. Mrs. Chance was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Patagonia, Ariz., to Francisco and Bennie (Bartlett) Valenzuela. She grew up in Amado, Ariz. She married Bill Chance while working for a ranch there. She later lived in California and Tucson, Ariz., as well as Ranchester. She moved to Gillette in 1997 to be near her daughters. She enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing, camping and fishing. She was preceded in death by 14 siblings; a son, Willy P. Chance Jr.; and an infant son. Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Hopkins and Maureen Laramore, both of Gillette; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Gary Kramer

Gary Kramer, 61, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Kramer was born April 2, 1941, in Sheridan to Andrew Kramer Jr. and Amelia (Miller) Kramer. He graduated from high school and obtained a bachelor's degree. He joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1964, when he was honorably discharged. He was an electrical engineer for many years. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Eagles Lodge 4169, the Masonic Temple and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Angela; a brother, Richard; and his parents. Survivors include two brothers, Donald of Ranchester and Robert of Sheridan.

William Stanley

William Stanley, 90, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in the Veterans of Foreign Wars cemetery in Greybull. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Stanley was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Lincoln, Neb., to Orie and Sina (Hausen) Stanley. He entered the Army in 1942 and served until 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He married Eleanor Kopper in 1951 in Red Lodge, Mont. They later lived in Afton before moving to Sheridan in 1980. Mr. Stanley worked as a carpenter for many years until retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and working on cars. He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Dorothy Hurst and Edna Stanley; and a brother, Robert. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Stanley of Sheridan; a son, James; and four grandchildren. Donations may be made to the Bill Stanley Memorial Fund in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Elva Castello

Elva Maxine Castello, 70, of Moorcroft died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Rock Springs of natural causes. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Moorcroft with Father Karl Millis officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Ken Pitlick officiating. Arrangements are with Stevenson Funeral Home of Gillette. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Moorcroft in care of Stevenson Funeral Home, 210 W. Fifth St., Gillette, WY 82716.

Francis Pitet

Francis “Mickey” Pitet, 69, of Basin died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis of cancer. He was brother of Michelle Rosenthal and Larry Pitet, both of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Pitet was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Yankton, S.D., to Dr. Marcel Rene Pitet and Monica (Noonan) Pitet. He cooked in various restaurants in Montana and Wyoming until 1986, when he shattered his leg in a fall. He resided at Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin. He was preceded in death by a sister, Survivors include two other brothers, Roger of Billings and Patrick of Cody. Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital or the Wyoming Retirement Center, all in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Stella Ridgeway

Former Sheridan resident Stella Ann (Romeo) Ridgeway, 88, of Casper died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in the Wyoming Medical Center. Rosary will be 7 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Casper with Father August Koeune officiating. Mrs. Ridgeway was born Jan. 22, 1915, in Chicago to John and Anna (Szewczyk) Jaskowiak. She was dietician at the Sheridan Veterans Hospital from 1945-51. She married Don W. Ridgeway Feb. 10, 1950, in Sheridan. The family moved to Greybull in 1953 and to Casper in 1957. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Natali “Buch” Romeo; two brothers, Alexander and Joseph Piasecki; and one grandson. Survivors include her husband of Casper; three daughters, Maryann Cheney of North Plains, Ore., Debbie Cook of Cheyenne and Donna Kane of Casper; three sons, Larry, Randy and Mike, all of Casper; a sister, Leona Piasecki of Medford, Ore.; a brother, George Piasecki of San Diego; 32 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Opal Bohnsack

Opal M. Bohnsack, 81, of Sheridan died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Clark officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery.

Gary Kramer

Gary Kramer, 61, of Sheridan died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Jean Read

Jean Read, 85, of Lander died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Lander Valley Medical Center. She was mother of Charles “Chuck” Read of Sheridan. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Burial will be later in the family plot in Mount Hope cemetery in Lander. Hudson's Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Read was born Dec. 29, 1917, in San Francisco to Waldo H. Hader and Fanita M. (Edwards) Hader. The family moved to Fresno, Calif., then to Wyoming when Mrs. Read was 2 years old. Her grandparents owned and ran the power station that supplied most of the electricity to Lander in those years. Her grandfather, E.D. Edwards, was among those responsible for the Sinks Canyon Dam, and he built the log house that is headquarters of the state park there. Mrs. Read was a 1935 graduate of Lander Valley Vocational High School. She went to work as secretary for attorney P.B. Coolidge and also worked for the Stockgrowers State Bank (now Key Bank) until June 1937, when she married Charles Fentress of Denver. Mr. Fentress died in a truck accident in August 1938. Mrs. Read married Gordon H. Read in October 1940. He died in 1995. Mrs. Read was a 50-year member of Olivet Chapter 3, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of United Methodist Church. She sang in the church choir for 12 years. She also worked in the Thrift Shop, taught Sunday school for several years and served on many church committees. She enjoyed walking and gardening. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter. Survivors in addition to her son include three grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizens Center or the Heart Fund in care of Hudson's Funeral Home, 680 Mount Hope, Lander, WY 82520.

Laura Hoffer

Laura Iva Hoffer, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Westview Healthcare Center in Sheridan. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Assembly of God Church in Glendive, Mont., with Pastor Don Fercho officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Memorial cemetery in Glendive. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is handling arrangements. Mrs. Hoffer was born Sept. 17, 1914, in La Grange County, Ind., to Daniel S. and Mattie (Miller) Nissley. She married Gerald R. Hoffer June 13, 1937, in Nappanese, Ind. They resided many years in Glendive, where Mrs. Hoffer worked as a cook at Dawson County High School. She retired at 77, and they moved to Sheridan in 2000. She belonged to Glendive Assembly of God Church, enjoyed craft work and gardening and was known for her handmade quilts. She was preceded in death by a brother, LeRoy Nissley, and two sisters, Lena and Lydia. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; five sons, Paul J. of Cottonwood, Ariz., David R. of Anderson, Ind., Daniel L. of Billings, Leo of Sheridan and Quinton J. of Sulphur Springs, Ark.; a sister, Carol Maust of Goshen, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Connie Powell

Connie F. Powell, 59, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were this morning at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City. Inurnment of cremains was in Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City. Kane Funeral Home handled local arrangements, and Osheim-Catron Funeral Home handled arrangements in Rapid City. Mrs. Powell was born Dec. 10, 1943, in Rapid City to Clifford and Ruby (Brunick) Conry. She was a member of Eagles Lodge 186 and president of American Legion Post 7. She was a past leader for American Legion Girls State in South Dakota and Wyoming and was instrumental in starting the Girls State program in American Legion Post 303 in Hermosa, S.D. She enjoyed playing darts, calling bingo, fishing and camping. She worked several years at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and was a secretary at the South Dakota National Guard Camp. She was employed at Sheridan Manor at the time of her death. Survivors include a daughter, Terri Boggs of Pringle, S.D.; a son, Ronald; two sisters, Kittie Ann Johnson of Sheridan and Colleen Faber of Rapid City; a brother, Cliff Conry of Belle Fourche, S.D.; and a special friend, Steve Legerski of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to the Connie Powell Memorial Fund in care of Terri Boggs, P.O. Box 45, Pringle, S.D. 57773.
