George Oliver Davidson
George Oliver Davidson, 96, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the VA Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Arden Haeffner officiating. His cremains will be buried at Lee cemetery in Montana at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Davidson was born March 29, 1905, in Shell to Frank Davidson and Mary Sophia (Christiansen) Davidson. He lived in Shell until he was 5, and started school in Dayton at age 6. He attended schools in Troy and Libby, Mont., and graduated from high school at Birney, Mont., in 1924. He was an Army mess sergeant during World War II. He served in Scotland, the English Channel, Wales and France. He worked for Brewsters at the Quarter Circle U Ranch, the Three Circle Ranch, SH Ranch, Evan McRays Ranch, and Al Knoblochs Ranch, all in Montana. He also worked at several ranches in Big Horn before retiring to Sheridan. He was one of the first residents at Heritage Towers, and lived there until moving to the Nursing Home Care Unit at the Sheridan VA Medical Center about five years ago. He enjoyed reading Western books and watching animal shows on television. He had a great sense of humor and called himself “George Drives Alone” because of his travel around the country by himself. He had great love for family, friends, children and animals. He was preceded in death by one sister, Pearl Hayhome, and six brothers, Iver, Clarence, Roy, Mack, Gordon and David. He is survived by his caregivers of the past 25 years, niece and nephew Nancy and Dick Marquess of Big Horn; nephew Gordon Davidson of Bozeman, Mont.; and niece Ivene Mouat of Hardin, Mont. Memorials are suggested to the George Davidson Memorial Fund in care of Elizabeth or Kim at Sheridan State Bank, Box 6268, Sheridan, WY 82801. The memorial fund will benefit the VA Nursing Home Care Unit.
Vera Nielsen
Vera Mae Nielsen, 90, of Beach, N.D., died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Dickinson, N.D. She was mother of Lenus Nielsen of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Beach with the Rev. Alan Kornacki officiating. Interment will be in Beach Lutheran cemetery. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Beach is handling arrangements. Mrs. Nielsen was born Sept. 26, 1910, in Nimrod, Minn., to Grace A. (Wintermute) and Frank Meech. She was educated in a country school near her home and at Sebeka High School. She married
Leo A. Nielsen March 26, 1929, in Wadena, Minn. They later moved to North Dakota, where they farmed from 1938 until Mr. Nielsen’s death in 1993. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Crystal Eierman and Joy Pederson, and a brother, Wendell Meech. Survivors include a daughter, Leona Mae Nielsen of Park Rapids, Minn.; another son, LaVerne of Circle, Mont.; two sisters, Cloy Bowers of Brainerd, Minn., and Vedna Charmley of Anchorage, Alaska; four brothers, Clinton Meech of Staples, Minn., Vernon Meech of Stillwater, Minn., Harold Meech of Inver Heights, Minn., and Ivan Meech of Minneapolis; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Violet Stevenson
Violet I. Stevenson, 82, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Private family services will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Stevenson was born June 6, 1919, in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Asa and Ella (Perry) Roach. She grew up and attended schools in Illinois. She married
Charles Stevenson Dec. 24, 1934, in Illinois. She moved to Sheridan in 1943 and worked at the Coil Factory and later at Memorial Hospital. She went to work at the Sheridan VA as a nurse’s aide in 1966. She retired in 1983. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening and spending time in the mountains. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include four sons, Charles of Upton, Roland of Lovington, N.M., and Kenneth and Keith, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Leota Lundquist and Normae Wilson of Illinois; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
Byron Veach
Byron Veach, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at his Sheridan home. Viewing is 2-7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service is 10 a.m. Saturday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Allen Jones officiating.
Steve Badgett
Steve Badgett, 43, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City. Viewing is 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Masonic No. 43 section.
Clyde Hix Rowe
Clyde Hix Rowe, 92, of Lander died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001. Services were Wednesday. Mr. Rowe was born Oct. 18, 1908, at Urbana, Ill., to Howard and Flora (Hix) Rowe. The family moved to Sheridan, and he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1934. He married
Mittie Mae Cox Oct. 2, 1936. During World War II, he was a “listener” who monitored radio transmissions for the Department of Secret Service. He had three shops in Lander for radio and later television repair. He was a master gunsmith and lapidarian. He was a founder of the Lander One Shot Antelope Hunt. Survivors include grandchildren Teho and Dennis Powers of Sheridan and Carol Stamm and Bruce Corbett of Lander; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter and a brother. Donations are suggested to the Water for Wildlife Fund of the Lander One Shot Antelope organization, 545 W. Emma Wilson
Emma W. Wilson, 91, of Sheridan died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Missoula, Mont. Arrangements are being handled by Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Wilson was born June 19, 1910, in Elgin, N.D., to Henry and Margaret (Ganthner) Wentz. She attended schools in New Leipzig, N.D. She married
Thomas Wilson in 1939 in Missoula and worked there as a cook at St. Patrick’s Hospital and the Missoula Country Club. She also worked as a housekeeper for many years. Mr. Wilson died in 1961. Mrs. Wilson moved to Sheridan in 1972. She baby-sat for Bible study groups and for many families in the area. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Martha’s Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and Bible study. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, four brothers and two grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters, Norma Kirkpatrick of Missoula, Ruth Hopkins of Charlotte, N.C., and Melba White of Sheridan; two sisters, Lois Klein of Fargo, N.D., and Irene Brester of Albany, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorials may benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
Clara Tidwell
Clara Edith Tidwell, 86, of Sheridan died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Westview Health Care Center. Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be later. Ted “Grady” Tidwell in 1936 in Mississippi. She sold fireworks for many years and worked at several jobs including Western Cafe, Schreibeis Bakery, Clover Leaf Bakery and Carroll’s Furniture. She loved to play bingo and was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers Nicholas, William, Rutheford, Earl, Donald and Homer; and two sisters, Ruth and Florence. Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Lorenz of Spencer, Iowa, and Gertrude Voogd of Van Nuys, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Willard Dickey
BUFFALO — Willard Fayette Dickey, 83, of Buffalo died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his residence. He was father of the late Lynn Dickey, former state legislator of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Union Congregational Church in Buffalo with the Revs. David Miers and Verne Robinson officiating. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in charge of military graveside rites. Dustin Lee Gard
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Dustin Lee Gard, 19, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, in Eagle River. He is the son of former Sheridan residents John and Debbie Gard. Services were last week in Eagle River. Mr. Gard was born May 27, 1982, in Sheridan. He moved to Alaska with his family in 1993. He loved snowmachining and many outdoor sports. He attended the University of Alaska-Anchorage and was an employee of Wal-Mart. Survivors include his parents of Anchorage; brothers Joshua and Aaron Gard; a grandmother, Lavonne Drell of Sheridan; grandmother and grandfather Margaret G. and John D. Gard Sr.; and aunts and uncles. The family requests memorials be sent to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, 1245 E. Colfax Ave., Suite 400, Denver, CO 80218.
Edward Grevesen
Edward Grevesen, 84, Sheridan, died Saturday, Sept. 1, at Westview Health Care Center. Visitation is 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home followed by private graveside services at Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Grevesen was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Perth Amboy, N.J., to Mathiese and Margaret Grevesen. He served in the Army in World War II. He married
Elizabeth V. Breznak in 1947 in New Jersey, and they moved to Sheridan in 1948. He was a crane operator for N.A. Nelson Construction Co. in Montana and Wyoming from 1948 to 1970. He then worked for Husman Brothers Inc. in Wyoming from 1970 until retiring in 1976. He belonged to International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO Local 400, in Helena, Mont. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bingo. He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother, and a sister. Survivors include two sons, Don of Surprise, Ariz., and Bill of New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit donor’s choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Sheridan.
