William Babione
William Donald “Bill” Babione, 46, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in a motorcycle accident on his family ranch. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Gifford officiating. Charles Huson
Charles Edward Huson, 70, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Buffalo. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery with military honors. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Huson was born Dec. 21, 1930, in Sheridan to Harry and Mae (Chase) Huson. He grew up in the Clearmont area and graduated from Clearmont High School. He joined the United States Navy after graduation. After honorable discharge, he returned to Buffalo and married
Mary E. Will. They were later divorced. He married
Suzanne Milnichak in 1970; they were divorced in 1995. Mr. Huson worked for the Mountain Bell Telephone Company 19 years. He owned the John Deere H&B Inc. dealership in Buffalo and Gillette in 1970. He later sold insurance for Farm Bureau and was part owner in a limited partnership of an oilfield in Crook County in the 1980s and ‘90s. He had ranch holdings and he and his wife, Suzanne, purchased Ellis Hardware in 1987. He moved to Sheridan in November 1996. He was a member of Toastmasters, Past Master Anchor Lodge 7 Knights Templar, York Rite, the Shrine, Buckskin Horse Patrol, the Gillette and Buffalo Rotary clubs, the 49’ers Dance Club, the Sheridan Elks 520, National Rifle Association, American Legion, Old Time Musicians and County Sportman Association. He enjoyed Denver Bronco football, John Deere tractors, traveling, boating and being with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas. Survivors include his companion, Louise Ralston of Sheridan; three sons, Ed Jr. of Gillette, Stephen of Sidney, Neb., and Paul of Buffalo; two daughters, Louisa Voden of Oklahoma City and Tobin Huson Overman of Buffalo; two brothers, Harry and Russell; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Junior Miller
Junior R. Miller, 83, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Capt. Michael Bates officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Miller was born March 15, 1918, in Sheridan to Leroy and Bertha (Batemen) Miller. He grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. He married
June McKelvey in 1939 in Sheridan. She died in 1955. Mr. Miller worked on the bridge gang for CB&Q Railroad and was medically retired from the railroad when he was 48. He married
Juanita Harris in 1957; they later divorced. He married
Zina Anderson in 1972; she died in 1978. He married
Evelyn Smith in Hardin, Mont., in 1979. She died in 1993. He was a lifelong resident of Sheridan and a member of Big Horn Mountain Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bingo, working in the yard and his two Boston terriers. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight; a stepdaughter, Gladys Ring; and two granddaughters. Survivors include three sons, Jack of Ranchester, James of Burns and Jeff of Washington; three daughters, Linda Vallejo and Judy Miller, both of Sheridan, and Janice and Julie Miller, both of Washington; two stepsons, David Smith of Sheridan and Bob Smith of Gillette; a stepdaughter, Sharon Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. William Ackerley
William Allen Ackerley, 66, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at his home in Sheridan of cancer. Cremation has taken place and graveside services are 2 p.m. Monday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Ackerley was born Aug. 29, 1934, in Sheridan to Allen Dunlap Ackerley and Cora Ann McDaniels. He grew up on the Ackerley Ranch on Buffalo Creek, where he attended school. In first grade, he received the highest achievable score in reading, an honor he was especially proud of. Mr. Ackerley married
Goldie Ann Sayer in 1951. They ranched on the family homestead on Buffalo Creek. He drove trucks and worked throughout Wyoming on road construction. He married
Cheryl Fender in 1972, and they operated Ackerley and Son Excavating. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his church, playing the guitar and mouth harp, gardening, woodworking and spending time with his grandson. After returning to Sheridan, he hauled mail to Billings and Casper and drove trucks for Mullinax. He belonged to Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sheridan, where he played music and sang. An infant son, Robert, preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Billy Lee of Sheridan; a daughter, Judith Ann Ackerley of Cheyenne; a brother, Albert of Elko, Nev.; a sister, Marge Rose of Mesa, Ariz.; and a grandson. Gunnar Blomquist
Gunnar Erik Blomquist, 26, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a battle with cancer. Viewing will begin at 7 p.m. today at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church with Joel Hendrickson and Drew Redinger officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Blomquist was born Jan. 17, 1975, in Ithaca, N.Y., to Larry and Peggy (Decker) Blomquist. He grew up and graduated from high school in New Field, N.Y., then moved to Sheridan and was a graduate of Sheridan College. He married
Sonia Louise Beld June 29, 1996, in Sheridan. He worked as an electrician for Modern Electric until his illness. He was a member of Old Apostolic Lutheran Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing, the outdoors, woodworking and construction. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sierra Lillian; a brother, Tom Whitmarsh; and his grandparents, Aarne and Alli Blomquist and Isaac Decker. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Leif Erik Blomquist of Sheridan; his parents; two brothers, Mike Whitmarsh of Spencer, N.Y., and Ken Blomquist of Elkton, Md.; two sisters, Tonia Whitmarsh of New Field and Karen Gentile of Spencer, N.Y.; and grandparents Aimo and Helena Takala of Spencer.

Lina Blankenburg, 92, of Sheridan passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on August 6, 2001. Viewing will be held on Thursday, August 9, 2001, from 6-8 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 10, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor William Heine officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Gene Abernatha
Gene E. Abernatha, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday in Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph Keys officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Mrs. Abernatha was born Oct. 31, 1912, in Oregon, Mo., to Edward and Mary (Kurtz) Furhman. The family came to Buffalo when she was 4 years old. She grew up and graduated from high school in Buffalo. Calvin Abernatha there Dec. 31, 1931. She was county secretary for the Department of Agriculture for 22 years until her retirement. Mr. Abernatha died in 1957, and she moved to Sheridan in 1961. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed spending time in the Big Horn Mountains, playing bingo and attending Sunday morning breakfast at the Moose Lodge. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard, and by four brothers and sisters. Survivors include one son, James of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Robert Pappenheim
Former Sheridan resident Robert W. Pappenheim, 64, of Eaton, Colo., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Eaton Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Eaton cemetery. Allnutt Funeral Service is handling arrangements. Mr. Pappenheim was born March 2, 1937, in Eaton to Kathryn (Bedel) and William H. Pappenheim. He married
Kay Hart Dec. 17, 1961, in Sterling, Colo. He served in the Marines from 1956 to 1959 and was a 1964 graduate of Colorado State University. He worked for several banks in Colorado and Wyoming, including First Wyoming Bank of Sheridan in 1986. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, and a sister, Dorothy. Survivors include his wife of Eaton; a son, Mark Conrad of Rawlins; a sister, Betty Monaghan of Denver; two brothers, James of Crown Point, Ind., and Paul of Aurora, Colo.; and two granddaughters. V.G. “Shorty” Martin
V.G. “Shorty” Martin, 80, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at the VA Medical Center. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Assembly of God Church with pastor John Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Martin was born May 13, 1921, in Mangum, Okla., to Vance and Myrtle (Roberts) Martin. He grew up and attended schools in Oklahoma and Oregon. He married
Mildred Ridling and she died in 1998. He was in the Army during World War II and served at Guadalcanal and other Pacific theaters. He was wounded in action and discharged for disabilities related to his injuries. After the military, Mr. Martin worked for the U.S. Forest Service and the government until becoming totally disabled in 1963 and moving to Sheridan. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, AARP, and the Sunrise Assembly of God Church in Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing, travel, crocheting, reading, mechanics, his family and the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; one son; two granddaughters; and numerous brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, Donald Martin of Laramie and David Martin of Sheridan; a daughter, Ellen Roberts, of Longmont, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials are suggested to the Sunrise Assembly of God Church. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Lina Blankenburg
Lina Blankenburg, 92, longtime Sheridan resident, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a short battle with cancer. Viewing is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with pastor William Heine officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Mrs. Blankenburg was born June 4, 1909, in Hoechst Vlbg., Austria, to Emma (Schneider) and Heinrich Gerer. She came to this country in March 1927. She met and married
Otto F. Blankenburg in December the same year in Billings. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 70 years and a member of Martha Circle. She quilted with the ladies of the church each Wednesday from the time they started, and made and donated 20 to 30 pillows each month to the Sheridan Animal Shelter. She was the first female member of the United Teamsters Union in the state of Wyoming. She and her husband owned and operated the City Bakery at 44 S. Main St. before and during the World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; her youngest son, Edward, in 1982; her brother, Bruno Gerer, in 1975; and her sister, Paula Cass, this year. Survivors include her son, Walter Blankenburg of Sheridan; her daughter, Clara Wells of Littleton, Colo.; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Olga Walker of Sheridan and Stephanie Fox of Portland, Ore.; and many nephews and nieces. Martha Herrick
Martha Herrick, 89, of Sheridan and formerly of Anderson, Ind., died at Sheridan Manor Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Home in Anderson, Ind., with Karl R. Hunt officiating. Viewing is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before services. Interment will be in the East Maplewood cemetery in Anderson. Kane Funeral Home is handling local arrangements. Mrs. Herrick was born Feb. 20, 1912, to Flossie (Zimmer) and Lafe Striker in Anderson. She graduated from Anderson High School in 1930, and attended St. John’s School of Nursing. She was employed by newspapers in Anderson and later worked for the Speedway Flyer in Speedway, Ind. She enjoyed raising and showing dachshunds, riding and showing thoroughbred horses and owned and enjoyed antique automobiles. She attended the Christian Life Church of Sheridan. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Phil Trainer and Walter Herrick; three sisters; one niece; and one nephew. Survivors include two nephews, Karl Hunt of Sheridan and Thomas Hunt of Peoria, Ariz.; one niece, Kathryn Hunt Nesbitt of Millton, Ind.; and numerous other relatives.
Garth “Dan” Scott
Garth “Dan” Scott, 66, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and a private family memorial service will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Scott was born Nov. 4, 1934, in Indianapolis to Garth and Lilian (Henderson) Scott. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in agricultural engineering. He married
Elizabeth Pitzer in 1956 in Midland, Texas. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1973, and was discharged with the rank of captain. He then worked as a sales representative for Coastal Chemical Co. for 25 years. He enjoyed camping and tennis. He was a member of the Rotary Club, National Rifle Association and the Sportman’s Club, all of Sheridan. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; two daughters, Julie Anderson of Houston and Melinda Neilander of Minden, Nev.; two sons, Doug Scott of Tulsa, Okla., and Eric Scott of Lewisville, Texas; two sisters, Susan Helms of Buena Vista, Colo., and Patsy Grant of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.
Anna Ravndal
Sheridan native Anna Marie Ravndal, 86, died June 19, 2001, at her home in Auburn, Calif. Memorial services were June 16 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn. Interment was private. Arrangements were with Chapel of the Angels. Mrs. Ravndal was born Feb. 3, 1915, in Sheridan to Oscar and Fanny Johnson. She moved to Billings in 1943, then to California in 1993. She married
Steve Henry Armstrong in 1932 in Sheridan. She worked 33 years for the Billings water department until retiring in 1976. She married
Jon Ravndal in Billings in 1952. He died in 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Jackie Dickie of Auburn; a sister, Jerry Porter of Beaverton, Ore.; a brother, Carl Johnson of LaConner, Wash.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Ernest ‘Bradley’ Hart
Ernest “Bradley” Hart, 63, of Sheridan died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at his residence. Cremation has taken place and services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date. Mr. Hart was born Feb. 6, 1938, to Ernest and Verna (Thomas) Hart. He completed high school, and served in the U.S. Army. He later married
Rebecca Steigelman Dec. 23, 1983, in Sheridan. His greatest loves were fishing, hunting and his lodges. He was a member of Ashton Lodge No. 73, Eagles Lodge No. 4740, Kalif Temple, and the A&A Scottish Rite of Free Masonry of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lynn Hart. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca, of Sheridan; two stepsons, Rick and Robert Duryea, both of Sheridan; two sisters, Vicky Davidson of Idaho and Ann Wade of Oklahoma; one brother, Jim Hart of California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothea Dean
Dorothea E. Dean, 92, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Casper with Pastor Nathan Doerr of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church officiating. Mrs. Dean was born Aug. 1, 1909, in Redfield, S.D., to Frank J. and Louise Amellia (Kopplin) Wagner. She married
G. Harvey Dean May 31, 1931, in Redfield. She worked as a cub reporter in Aberdeen, S.D., and worked for the Sherwin-Williams Co. in sales. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, Order of Eastern Star, Sheridan Women’s Club and Circle of Friends with Sheridan Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a sister. Survivors include two sons, James G. of Casper and William L. of Brighton, Colo.; a brother, Richard Wagner of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Lucille Gilkison of Albany, Ore.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Evan Shaw
Former Sheridan resident Evan C. “Bud” Shaw, 93, of Laramie died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Laramie Care Center. Funeral services were 11 a.m. today at Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home in Laramie with the Rev. Gary Wilken officiating. Interment was in Green Hill cemetery. Mr. Shaw was born Sept. 20, 1907, in Albia, Iowa, to Fred and Maude Shaw. He married
Mary Jean Brunyansky Jan. 8, 1930, in Cheyenne. They managed the Rosedale Dairy south of Laramie for three years. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1971 after 43 years. They lived in Sheridan for several years before moving to Laramie in the late 1990s. His wife preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Dean of Laramie; three sisters, Lue Mahin, Frances Forsythe and Dorothy Plumb, all of Albia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Lena Weinberg
Lena “Sallee” Weinberg, 93, of Sheridan died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at her home. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be later. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mrs. Weinberg was born Jan. 5, 1908, in Nemansville, Ill., to Sena (Satorius) and James Emerson Sallee. She graduated from high school and attended the Michael Reese School of Nursing. She was associated with the University of Chicago. She married
Morris Weinberg Aug. 8, 1941, in Chicago. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, riding horses and playing cards, especially canasta and pinochle. She also enjoyed listening to classical music and loved birds. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother and two sisters. Survivors include a son, James D.; two sisters, Marguerite Klein and Wanda Curry; and three grandchildren.
James Fried
Former Sheridan-area resident James Leslie “Jim” Fried, 83, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home in Newcastle. Services were in Newcastle followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings. He was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Jamestown, N.D., to Peter and Davina Fried. He grew up on the family homestead at Fried, N.D. He attended high school at LaPorte, Minn., and returned to Fried after graduation. He married
LaVonne L. White June 9, 1940, while working in Devils Lake, N.D. Mr. Fried left farming for sales, working for Nash-Finch Grocers, Massey-Ferguson Farm Equipment, Monarch Clothing, Billings Dry Goods and William & Dickie Men’s Work Clothes. While in Sheridan he worked for Wyoming Sawmills and Mossholders Furniture. He was a member of the Sheridan Odd Fellows. He won an award for being the outstanding Massey-Ferguson salesman in the United States during November and December 1961. He also managed a Standard Oil service station in Medina, N.D., and Wold’s Department Store in Laurel, Mont. His last position was at the Metra Park Arena in Billings. He was a life member of Elks. He enjoyed fishing, reading, card-playing and rodeos. He was preceded in death by a brother, Norman, and a sister, Mildred Simle. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carole Baisch of Billings and Barbara Murphy of Newcastle; a son, James Fried of Helena, Mont.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ellen Gunter
Ellen R. Gunter, 86, of Sheridan died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic #8 Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Gunter was born June 23, 1915, in Leipzig, Germany, to Josef and Maria (Seliger) Reinisch. The family came to the United States in 1927, and Mrs. Gunter graduated from high school and business school in New York City. She worked as a bookkeeper for an architectural firm until 1937, when she returned to Germany. She worked as a clerk/stenographer in Leipzig. She taught German to children of the American Armed Forces in Bremerhaven, West Germany, from 1947 until she returned to the United States in 1951. She came to Eatons’ Ranch and worked at a bookkeeper until 1954, when she moved into Sheridan. She worked as a secretary/clerk at N.A. Nelson Construction until 1960. She married
Albert Gunter July 29, 1958, in Sheridan. They lived in Lander and Gillette and returned to Sheridan in 1967. Mrs. Gunter was a bookkeeper for Panetta Brothers until 1977. She was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Does Drove 127. She enjoyed reading, travel and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Jean Richards of Denver; a brother, Stephen Moser of Rexburg, Idaho; two stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
