Charles Harbel
Charles Andrew Harbel, 77, of Sheridan died at his home Friday, Aug. 24, 2001. At his request, he will be cremated, and there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mr. Harbel was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Sargent, Neb., to Andrew and Anna (Shinn) Harbel. He attended rural elementary schools and high school in Taylor, Neb., and moved to Sheridan in spring 1940 to work at Mydland Dairy. He later worked on the Moss Ranch near Parkman. He married
Helen Foster Dec. 24, 1943, in Sheridan. He worked at the Kane and Burns ranches, service stations, Sally Forbes’ dairy and ranched on Meade Creek. He worked at Rehabilitation Enterprises of North East Wyoming four years before retiring in 1984. He was an active member of the Sheridan County Farm Bureau, serving as president of the Big Goose, Big Horn and Sheridan County bureaus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and traveled in the United States, Kenya and the British Isles. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry of Maryland and Jerry of Virginia; a daughter, Judi of Colorado; two sisters, Mary Kraft of Sheridan and Ella Shrader of California; a brother, Maurice of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Glenn Hoff
Glenn Hoff, 74, of Sheridan died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Deaconess Medical Center in Billings. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sheridan Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Charles Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Masonic 43 Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Hoff was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Sheridan to Charles G. and Laura E. (Howell) Hoff. He attended Sheridan schools and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1945. He later attended Heiman’s Business College. He was inducted into the Army in 1945, training at Fort Bliss, Texas, in the artillery before serving in the 53rd Field Artillery in the Pacific. He worked for CB&Q Railroad after returning home from the service. He later worked for Sheridan VA Medical Center and was supervisor in personal property management when he retired in 1984. Arlene M. Loucks Oct. 22, 1948, in Sheridan. They attended the Wesleyan Church in Sheridan. Mr. Hoff was a past master of Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43 A.F. & A.M., a past grand commander, past grand high priest, past most illustrious grand master and past M.E. grand high priest. He was past puissant sovereign of St. Denny Conclave, a member of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest, Equality York Rite Collage 97, KYCH, and past worthy patron of Friendship Chapter 51, Order of the Eastern Star, Sheridan. He enjoyed fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains and roller skating, and operated the community roller rink for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Denton Hoff. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a son, Wayne of Sheridan; two daughters, Linda Westwang of Sheridan and Laurie Bartenhagen of Williston, N.D.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Marie King
Marie K. King, 76, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the Elks Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. King was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Kleenburn to Faust and Josephine (Podio) Musso. She grew up in Newcastle and attended schools there, graduating from Newcastle High School. During World War II, she worked in defense plants in California. She married
Donald A. King June 16, 1952, in the Catholic Church in Newcastle. She was a homemaker and an Avon sales representative. She also worked as secretary for a bank auditor. She was a member of the PTA, the Bot Sot camping group, Good Sams of America and the Albertson Altar Society. She enjoyed being with her family, camping, knitting and crocheting, needlepoint, rockhounding, the Arizona desert, card-playing, gardening, baking and cooking. She was preceded in death by a sister. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two sons, Mike of Helena, Mont., and Steve of Minneapolis; four daughters, Michelle Johnson of Driggs, Idaho, Jo Ellen Reichstadt of St. Paul, Minn., Kristi Hugulet of Whitehall, Mont., and Donna Brozovich of Spring Creek, Nev.; a sister, Angie Eixenberger of Sheridan; and five grandchildren. Shirley J. Russell
Shirley J. Russell, 66, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Private family services will be held. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Russell was born Dec. 29, 1934, in Coriscana, Texas, to Thomas and Velma (Caskey) Cooper. She grew up in Texas and Alaska, graduating from high school in Skagway, Alaska. She married
Robert Russell Jan. 28, 1955, in Skagway. They lived in Alaska, Oregon and Washington before coming to Sheridan in 1980. She enjoyed reading and writing. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; sons Steven of Tacoma, Wash., Trenton of Laramie and David of Morongo Valley, Calif.; a daughter, Carrie Dahl of Sheridan; a brother, James Cooper of Sheridan; one sister, Debra Boles of Lancaster, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Harry Allen Jones
Harry Allen Jones, 87, of Big Timber, Mont., and formerly of Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery in Big Timber with pastor Jim Holmlund officiating. Viewing is until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday at Lowery Funeral Home in Big Timber. Mr. Jones was born May 17, 1914, to Charles and Maggie (Allen) Jones in Big Timber. Elizabeth J. Olson Aug. 18, 1939, in Billings. They ranched in Basin from 1959 to 1984. They moved to Big Timber and stayed until 1989, when they moved to Sheridan. They moved back to Big Timber two weeks ago. He loved to garden and work in his shop. Survivors include his wife of Big Timber; one son, Monte of Sheridan; two daughters, Colleen Staley of Norman, Okla., and Dixie Melvin of Big Timber; one sister, Blanche Coil of Paso Robles, Calif.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, James Allen and Colin Allen; one sister, Chloe Moffett; and two brothers, Francis L. “Buck” Jones and Parker Jones.

Charles Paul McCalla, 71, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating. Interment of cremains will be at a later date.
Robert Young
Robert L. “Bill” Young, 80, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Young was born March 22, 1921, in Rowan County, N.C. Survivors include two sons, James of Sheridan and Butch of Gillette.

Madeleine Lynch
Former Sheridan resident Madeleine Lynch, 82, of Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, July 22, 2001. Mass of Christian Burial was July 26 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Oakview, Mo. Mrs. Lynch was born Dec. 13, 1918, in Toronto to Ruben F. and Ellen Kee Lewis. She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. She moved to Kansas in 1936 to study nursing at St. Mary College in Leavenworth and Providence Hospital in Kansas City. She married
Jack Lynch in 1941. He died in 1994. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John F. “Jack” Lewis of Sheridan. Survivors include three daughters, Letty Baker of Gladstone, Mo., Beth Lynch-Gibbings of Chicago and Maggie Lynch of Kansas City; three sons, John of Huntington Beach, Calif., Dennis of St. Louis and Tim of Catonsville, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Louella Reinke
Louella E. Reinke, 88, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Elks Section, with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Reinke was born Aug. 12, 1913 in Sheridan to Anton and Francis (Veskerna) Zahradnicek. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan. She graduated from Normal Training and received her teaching certificate from the University of Wyoming. She taught in rural schools at Big Goose and Dutch Creek. She married
Fred Reinke May 17, 1936, in Buffalo. They ranched on Big Goose until 1972, when they moved to Sheridan. He died in 1973. Mrs. Reinke worked as checker at the truck stop and secretary in the Sheridan County Weed & Pest office until she retired. She was an avid bingo player and a member of the Big Goose Homemakers and Big Goose Community Club. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, E.A. Zahradnicek, and a grandson, Tom Thomas. Survivors include one son, Roger of Sheridan; a daughter, Marilyn Thomas of Sheridan; two sisters, Helen Plott of Parkman and Ruth Milne of Edgemont, S.D.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Harriet L. Bartels, 84, of Sheridan died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until noon Tuesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Lynn M. Hoffman, 50, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Hoffman was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Sheridan to Leroy and Dorothy (Davis) Mooney. She grew up and graduated from high school in Sheridan and attended Sheridan College, the University of Wyoming and Montana State University. She married
Edward Hoffman Aug. 11, 1973, in Sheridan. She worked many years for the Wyoming Department of Employment. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the Altar Guild as well as president of the Friends of the Library and past president of the Jayceettes. She loved her family, gardening and Civil War history. She was preceded in death by her father. Survivors include her husband of Sheridan; two daughters, Erin Foote of Laramie and Kristen Hoffman of Sheridan; her mother of Sheridan; two brothers, Glenn Mooney of Sheridan and Stephen Mooney of Gillette; and a sister, Jeanine Bursell of Sheridan. Bethel Overlin
Sheridan native Bethel Katherine Overlin, 77, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore. Graveside services and interment were Aug. 9 in Aloha, Ore., with Pastor Barry King of the Palace of Praise United Pentecostal Church of Aloha officiating. Arrangements were with Donelson, Sewell & Mathew Mortuary of Hillsboro. Mrs. Overlin was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Sheridan to Harry O. and Bertha Mae Jaggers Garretson. She moved to the Salem, Ore., area with her family as a young woman. She married
Raymond Channel in Salem Sept. 7, 1946. He died in 1968. She married
Russell Overlin March 3, 1969, in Vancouver, Wash. He died in 2000. Mrs. Overlin worked as a cook most of her life, including at the Skelly Truck Stop in Sheridan. She also completed nurses aide training and worked at the Sheridan Hospital. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 1560 in Sheridan. She moved to Forest Grove, Ore., in 1988. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Miller. Survivors include three sons, Jim Channel of Hillsboro, John Channel of Muretta, Calif., and Jerry Channel of Sheridan; two daughters, Joyce Martin of Aloha and Jackie Channel of Tigard, Ore.; three stepchildren, Ronnie Overlin of Charlotte, N.C., Russell Overlin of Raleigh, N.C., and Lila Owens of Texas; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Former Sheridan resident Cecile Wyoma Klepinger, 75, of Evansville died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Casper with Steve Zurn officiating. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are with Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and Crematory of Casper. Mrs. Klepinger was born Aug. 16, 1925, to Emil P. and Sarah M. (Montgomery) Skovgaard on the family farm in North Dakota near Fullerton/LaMoure. She received nurse’s training in Valley City, N.D., and at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. She later worked at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County as a registered nurse. She married
George N. Klepinger Nov. 1, 1947, in Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael R.; a brother, Ray Skovgaard; and a sister, Harriet Knisely. Survivors include her husband of Evansville; a son, Ken of Juneau, Alaska; four sisters, Barbara Schultz of Lonsdale, Minn., Marjorie Strand of Phoenix, Loris Benson of North Branch, Minn., and Jane Potts of LaMoure; two brothers, Joe Skovgaard of Minneapolis and Richard A. Skovgaard of Sebastian, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Former Sheridan resident Hal Walter Hampton, 48, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper of a heart attack. Mr. Hampton was born in Sheridan Aug. 27, 1952, to Tom and Carneeda (Sampson) Hampton. He grew up in Sheridan and married
Deborah Crabtree May 29, 1971. They were married
18 years. He lived in Montana and Colorado for a time before settling in Gillette to be near family. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Charidy Hack. Survivors include three daughters, Nanette Cunningham of Wright, Candace McMillan of Powell and Faith Hampton of Gillette; a son, Caleb of Gillette; and eight grandchildren.
Lynn Popp
DAYTON — Lynn Popp, 75, of Dayton died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be at a later date. Champion Ferries Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Mr. Popp was born April 3, 1926, in Broadus, Mont., to John and Blanche (Metlin) Popp. He married
Georgia Scobee May 31, 1951, in Billings. He worked on various ranches and farms and as a heavy-equipment operator on most highways in the Dakotas, Wyoming and Montana in the 1950s and ‘60s. He went to work for the local mines in the 1970s and retired from Decker Coal in 1990. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing cribbage. He liked horses and helping the local ranchers with branding. He moved to Sheridan from Williston, N.D. He lived here 15 years, then moved to Dayton 25 years ago. He was a member of Elks Lodge 520, Eagles, United Mine Workers of America and International Engineer’s Local 400 in Montana. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife of Dayton; three sons, Robert L., Dennis D. and Eugene S., all of Gillette; two daughters, Annette M. Canfield of Gillette and Debra K. Popp of Sheridan; two sisters, Lavelle Engle of Rapid City and Beverly Bell of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Marie Jarrard
BUFFALO — Marie Christana Jarrard, 90, of Buffalo died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at the Johnson County Health Care Center. She was a member of Eastern Star, Sahida Temple in Sheridan. Funeral services were 10 a.m. today at Kaycee cemetery with the Rev. Dana Lohse officiating. Arrangements were with Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Mrs. Jarrard was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Grundy County, Iowa, to Earl and Minnie Smith. The family later moved to South Dakota. She was a 1930 graduate of Blunt, S.D., High School and received an elementary teaching certificate from Northern State Teaching College in Aberdeen, S.D. She married
Richard Jarrard Feb. 16, 1946, in Casper. He died in 1993, and she moved to Buffalo. She also was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile of Casper. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include a sister, Velma Higgins, and a half sister, Dorothy Wilcox, both of Sturgis, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Rathkamp
Mary Patricia Rathkamp, 63, of Wyola, Mont., died Saturday, August 11, 2001, in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings after a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan. Private inurnment will follow at Fairview cemetery in Hardin, Mont. Arrangements are with Bullis Mortuary of Hardin. Mrs. Rathkamp was born Nov. 13, 1937, in Glenco, Minn., to Leonard and Leona Ocha Herman. She grew up and attended schools in Winsted, Minn., and was a 1956 graduate of Howard Lake High School. She later attended beauty college in Minneapolis. She married
Darrell Rathkamp Nov. 14, 1959, in Howard Lake. They made their home there, and she owned and operated a beauty shop. The family moved to the Wyola area in 1977 and operated the Pass Creek Angus Ranch. Mrs. Rathkamp was an active participant in the ranch and its operations. She enjoyed painting and artwork. Her family and ranch were focal points of her life. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gordon. Survivors include her husband of Wyola; a daughter, Lisa Rathkamp of Ranchester; two sons, Todd and Kurt of the family ranch; a brother, Ellsworth Herman of Minnesota; and five grandchildren. William and Myrtle Verden
Graveside committal of former Sheridan residents William Jr. and Myrtle Verden will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Pastor Bob Miller officiating.
Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mr. Verden died April 4, 2001, in California. Mrs. Verden died Aug. 29, 1997, in California.

Walter Harris
Walter F. Harris, 89, of Sheridan died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Lucas officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Mr. Harris was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Alliance, Neb., to Walter and Emma (Kulper) Harris. He came to Sheridan at age 5. He was a graduate of Sheridan High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married
Ada Gleason Sept. 5, 1953, in Sheridan. He worked 50 years as a reporter and sports editor for The Sheridan Press, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed sports and refereed high school basketball and football games for many years. He enjoyed working concession stands at the ballpark and rodeo events. He belonged to Elks Lodge 520, Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his wife; a sister, Nellie Harris; and a brother, Floyd. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Ellis of Aurora, Colo., and Gary Donnelly of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Naomi Bissell and Winifred Woodhead, both of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
