Hayward E. Honaker

Hayward E. Honaker, 89, a longtime resident of Laramie, died last Thursday at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs.

He was born Aug. 25, 1911 in Fort Morgan, Colo., the son of the late Mike and Edith Honaker.

After graduating from Laramie High School in 1929, he attended the University of Wyoming for three years. Because of the Great Depression, he had to leave college to help his father run the grocery store. During that time, the Honakers provided groceries to many Laramie people who were able to pay for the groceries only in later years.

He married Faola Henderson in 1940 and they made their home in Laramie. .

He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946 in the South Pacific, primarily at Pearl Harbor, Guam and Okinawa.

He returned to Laramie and purchased the Grand Avenue Market, which he owned and operated until 1959. At that time he started Honaker's Toys and Hobbies at the same location, and operated it until his retirement in 1974.

He loved to fish and hunt, and particularly enjoyed floating the Platte River, and dry fly fishing on the Big and Little Laramie Rivers.

He also enjoyed golfing, and was a lifetime supporter of the University of Wyoming athletic teams, attending various tournament and bowl games, and braving October and November blizzards to cheer for the Cowboys. He was also a member of the Methodist Church, B.P.O. Elks and the Moose Lodge in Laramie.

In addition to his wife, Faye, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Shannon Honaker of Rock Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and David Johnson of Cheyenne; three grandchildren; one sister, Frances Bickel of Fort Collins, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Following cremation at the Vase Mountain Crematory, memorial services will be announced at a later date.

The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice.

Ernest McPhie, 87

Ernest Bernard McPhie, 87, passed away June 6, 2002, in Evanston. He was born on January 21, 1915, in Superior to Andrew McPhie and Hilda Helen Hopkinson.

He graduated from Evanston High School in 1934.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy until he was honorably discharge.

He married Frances Elaine Coates on May 27, 1937, in Paris, Idaho.

He was a railroad engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad for 46 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as Elder.

He served as scout master for 16 years in Troop 11, he served in the BL of E 136 as their chief, and also served in VFW Post 4280.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Elaine McPhie of Evanston; sons F. Craig (Verlaine) McPhie of Frances, Utah, and Ernest Jack (Judy) McPhie of Green River; and a stepbrother, LaMar (Deon) Smith; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank McPhie; sister Patricia; and his step-mother, Edna McPhie.

Funeral services were conducted June 10 at the Crandall Funeral Home in Evanston.

James Henry Thomas, 71

James Henry Thomas, 71, of Eloy, Ariz., died Nov. 8, 2002 in Eloy.

He was born April 4, 1931, in Dolores, Colo.

He served in the U.S. Army and worked at Tg Soda Ash for many years.

Survivors include his wife Mabel of Eloy; two daughters, Tina Clooney and Terri Thomas, both of Lyons, Colo.; two sons, James Thomas Jr. of Draper, Utah, and Tom Thomas of Mancos, Colo.; three sisters, four brothers and numerous grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at the Casa Grande Chapel in Casa Grande, Ariz.

Shirley Mackrell, 71

Shirley Marie Mackrell, 71, Green River, passed away Dec. 20, 2002, at the University of Utah.

She was born March 13, 1931, in Green River and was a graduate of the Lincoln High School with the class of 1949.

She married Archibald Mackrell in Green River and he preceded her in death in 1976.

Her interests included painting, crocheting, ceramics and playing bingo.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald James Albert and wife Robbie, Paul Mackrell and wife Cheryl, and Archie Mackrell, all of Green River; two daughters, Connie Marie Pratt of West Valley, Utah and Julie Ann Hays and husband Brian of Garland, Texas; one brother, Bob Bingham and wife Barbara of Green River; one sister-in-law, Bonnie Bingham of Pinedale; six grandchildren, one step-grandson; one niece, one great-niece and one great-nephew.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded by her parents, one brother, Clyde Bingham and one sister, Claudetta Bingham.

Following cremation at the Vase White Mountain Crematory, a memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel in Green River. Father Tom Sheridan of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will conduct the services.

Inurnment will take place in Riverview cemetery in Green River. Friends may call at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel one hour prior to services.

Linda Wyatt, 64

Linda Carol Wyatt, 64, of Battle Mountain, Nev., formerly of Green River, died Jan 12, 2003 in Battle Mountain.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is scheduled Friday at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel in Green River at 2 p.m.

Rev. Sue Pierce will conduct the service.

Joan Berti

Joan Berti, 81, Rock Springs, passed away April 18, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 4, 1922, in New Prague, Minn., the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary O'Connell Pomijc.

She attended schools in New Prague and graduated from high school with the class of 1939. She attended St. Catherine's College and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1944. She also received an associates degree in fine arts and a degree in criminal justice. She obtained her counselor's degree in alcohol abuse and drug addiction at the University of Utah

She married Elmer "Monty" Berti in 1948 in New Prague and he preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, St. Mark's Catholic Church of Phoenix, Catholic League and National Right to Life.

Survivors include two sons, Paul Berti and Charles Berti, both of Rock Springs; one daughter, Mary Catherine Berti of Tempe, Ariz.; twin brothers, Robert Pomijc and wife Beverly of Lasalle, Ill.; her twin brother Ralph Pomije and wife Beverly of New Prague; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Harry, Patrick and Michael.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated this morning at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Father Camillus Elspermann officiating. Interment followed in the Rock Springs Municipal cemetery.

Breanna Fay Durfee

Breanna Fay Durfee, 17, of Rock Springs, died April 13, 2001.

She was born May 5, 1983 in Rock Springs, the daughter of Charles H. and Valarie NeVille Durfee.

She attended East Junior High School, Rock Springs High School and was currently enrolled in the Rock Springs Alternative High School.

Her interests were playing the bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and piano. She also enjoyed drawing and spending time with her friends. She was an outgoing, fun person, always cheering people up.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include her father stepmother, Charles and Colleen Durfee of Rock Springs; one brother, Charles Durfee of Salt Lake City; three stepbrothers; Monte White of Salt Lake City, Rock White of Roy, Utah and Tex White of Spanish Fork, Utah; two sisters ; Jenny L.Boyd of Salt Lake City and L. Renae Taylor of Rock Springs; three stepsisters; Misty White and Brooke Higgs, both of Rock Springs and Krystal Reed of Orem, Utah; grandmother Val Hales of Brigham City, Utah; eight nieces, one nephew, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother Valarie NeVille, grandparents, Arden and Myra Durfee, and Don NeVille.

Private graveside services and interment were conducted at the Brigham City cemetery, Brigham City.

E. Woodrow Hunter

E. Woodrow Hunter, 86, of Green River, died Aug. 22, 2001 the Castle Rock Convalescent Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 16, 1914 in American Fork, Utah, the son of the late Henry and Mary L. Astle. His mother later married George P. Hunter and the family moved to Montpelier, Idaho, where he attended school through his sophomore year.

In order to help provide support during the Depression, he left school and went to work. The family moved to Green River in 1929.

He married Helen Branson in Salt Lake City in 1936 and they later divorced. He married Louise Christensen in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1998.

He worked for the railroad as a ticket agent, switchman and in the telegraph department. Other jobs he had included work in grocery stores, bowling alleys and a year in the CCC in Teton and Yellowstone Parks.

He worked as manager of Tristate Lumber in Green River until 1944 when he enlisted in the Navy. He received an honorable discharge and returned to Green River to operate a furniture business and paint contracting company.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

In 1949, he served a mission to England for the LDS Church, returning to Wyoming in 1951. He opened the Hunter Furniture Store in Rock Springs in 1962.

After ten years, he retired and moved back to Green River, working part time as city building inspector and as a real estate appraiser for the VA and FHA until 1993.

He served many positions in the LDS Church in Green River and Rock Springs, including bishop of the Rock Springs First Ward, member of the Rock Springs Stake High Council, Sunday School teacher, and Second Counselor in the Stake Presidency. He also served as Stake Mission President, Stake Clerk, and Stake Patriarch in the Green River Stake for 20 years. In England and Wyoming, he was involved in many Church building programs.

He was also a member of the Jim Bridger Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Survivors include Marlow Hunter of Arlington, Texas; Lee Hunter of San Jose, Calif. and Glen Hunter of Aztec, N.M.; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; one sister, Marjean Wall and husband, Willard, of Cottonwood, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Grace Hunter of St. George, Utah and one brother-in-law, Dick Francom of Green River.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Green River LDS 3rd Ward Chapel, 1000 W. 4 N.

Charles Davis, 59

Charles R. Davis, 59, of Green River, died Monday.

He was born Jan 23, 1943 in Little Rock, Ark.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Wyoming, and bowling.

Survivors include his wife Rosa; children Breanda, Debbie C., Debbie H., Dewayne, Louis, and Lisa, all of San Diego, and Jackie of Rock Springs, six grandchildren; Joey, James, Erik, Rebecka, Zachery and Lauren and three sisters, Lorean, Dolly and Christen.

Services were conducted Saturday in San Diego.

Jerry Ridgeway, 50

Jerry L. Ridgeway, 50, Green River, passed away Aug. 7. He had been a Green River resident for the past 28 years.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1951, in Milwaukee, the son of Richard E. and Helga Huttary Ridgeway.

He attended schools in Boulder, Colo., and graduated from Fairview High School with the class of 1971.

He married Annette Twitchell in Green River on May 24, 1974.

He was employed by Raillink for the past four years and at Stauffer Chemical for 24 years. His interests include NASCAR, planes, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Annette Ridgeway of Green River; parents Richard and Helga Ridgeway of Groveland, Fla.; three sons, Jason Ridgeway of Rawlins, Shaun Ridgeway of Kemmerer and Jamie Ridgeway of Green River; one daughter, Tara Ridgeway of Green River; two brothers, twin Terry Ridgeway of Buffalo and Jim Ridgeway of Denver; two sisters, Karin Brewer of Ocala, Fla., and Barbara Hodges of Clermont, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel, 263 East Flaming Gorge Way. Cremation followed at the White Mountain Crematory.

John M. Hummel, 76

John M. Hummel, 76, of Provo, Utah, passed away Nov. 3 at the East Lake Care Center in Provo.

He was born March 24, 1926 in Thermopolis, the son of the late Oral J. and Corinne St. Denis Hummel.

He attended schools in Thermopolis and graduated from Hot Springs High School with the class of 1944. He also attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1956 with a bachelor of science degree in petroleum geology and continued with his education, receiving his master's degree in 1948. He married the former Jean Pivic in 1949 in Rock Springs.

He was employed by Questar for 37 years and retired as chief geologist in June of 1986.

His interests included golf and photography.

He was a member of the St. Peter's Catholic Church in American Fork, Utah.

Survivors include his wife of Provo; one niece, Sharon Harper and husband Clifton of Rock Springs; one grand-niece, Angie Harper of Cheyenne; two nephews, Dirk Hummel and Chris Mathany of Jackson, Calif.; one grand-nephew, Russ Harper, of Riverton; and brother-in-law Mark Mathany of Jackson, Calif..

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Richard and James Hummel; and one sister, Connie Mathany.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Vase Funeral Chapel in Rock Springs. Father Camillus Hilspermann will officiate. A parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the Vase Funeral Chapel. Graveside services and inurnment will be conducted at the Paul J. Wataha Memorial Park cemetery in Rock Springs. The family will be receiving relatives and friends at the Vase Funeral Chapel one hour prior to the memorial service.

Ruth Hokanson, 74

Ruth Ellen Hokanson, 74, Green River, passed away on Dec. 11 at her home. A resident of Green River for 35 years and a former resident of Rock Springs, she had been in ill health for several years.

She was born in Quealy on Aug. 30, 1928, the daughter of late Nestor and Hulda Jacobsen Johnson.

She attended schools in Rock Springs and was a graduate of the Rock Springs High School with the class of 1946.

She married Clifford Hokanson in Rock Springs on Aug. 17, 1946.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband Clifford Hokanson of Green river; one son, Mark Hokanson and wife Debbie of Rock Springs; one daughter, Marilyn Dockter and husband Maynard of Green River; three brothers, Wayne Johnson and wife Marge, Robert Johnson and wife Mary, Wally Johnson and wife Harriet, all of Rock Springs; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson of Lander; five grandchildren, Corne Probst, Misty Wilson, Jessica Dockter, Matthew Dockter, and Stephanie Dockter; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 900 Hitching Post Drive, Green River. Father Tom Sheridan officiated. Interment was in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens cemetery in Rock Springs. A rosary was recited at 7 pm Dec. 15 at the Immaculate Conception Church.

Paul Robinson, 62

Paul Edward Robinson, 62, Green River, passed away on Feb. 9 at his home. A longtime resident of Green River, he had been in ill health for the past one year.

He was born on April 13, 1940, in Casper, the son of Henry Smith and Mary Jayne Bates Robinson.

He attended schools in Green River and was a graduate with the class of 1959.

He married Willa Ferne Lind in Mountain View on June 9, 1962.

He was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation on the Fontenelle Dam as a concrete inspector. He was also employed by FMC as a chemical analyst. He worked at Adams Sales, Inc. as a service man until he retired in 2002.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife Willa of Green River; three sons, Henry and wife Sonya of Green River, Courtney of Mesa, Ariz., and Clark and wife Alana of Rock Springs; one sister, Louis Tripp of Granger; one brother, William "Buzz" Robinson of Kinnear; six grandsons and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation will take place at the Vase White Mountain Crematory and a memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel, 263 East Flaming Gorge Way, Green River. Rev. Richard Calber will conduct the services. Friends may call at the Vase Flaming Gorge Chapel one hour prior to services.

The Family of Paul Edward Robinson respectfully suggests donations in his memory be made to Hospice of Sweetwater County, 900 Thompson Street, Suite D, Rock Springs or Respite Care of Sweetwater County, 731 C St., Rock Springs.
