Willa Mae Cates/02-15-04

Funeral services for Willa Mae Cates, 90, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church of Gillette with Mike Dennis officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cates died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Mrs. Cates, known to her friends and family as "Mitt," was born March 4, 1913, to Alice Edna (Blakeman) and William Somner Bell in Weston. She was raised on a ranch 50 miles north of Gillette. The first time she came to town, she was 10 years old.

In 1923, she attended Campbell County Elementary and Campbell County High School. As a young woman, she worked with her mother in the laundry business until she married James F. Cates on May 4, 1933, in Lead-Deadwood, S.D. They made their home in Gillette and raised six children.

Mrs. Cates enjoyed taking care of her yard and flowers. She loved to watch the birds in her yard and her favorite hobby was recycling.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Barritt of Goldbar, Wash., and Nancy Slattery of Gillette; three sons, Douglas "Bud" Cates, Raymond Cates and Tim Cates, all of Gillette; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, James W. Cates; one granddaughter; one grandson; five brothers; and two sisters.

Joshua Steele /02-15-04

Private family services were held for Joshua Steele on Saturday.

Joshua Steele, the son of Angela Dawn (Jones) and Bruce Adam Steele, was stillborn Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital.

Those saddened by this loss are Joshua's parents of Gillette; two brothers, Zachary and Dylan, both of Gillette; one sister, Emily of Gillette; his maternal grandparents, Mike and Sherry Jones, both of Gillette; his paternal grandparents, Larry and Devona Brannan, both of Gillette, and Don Steele of May Bell, Colo.

Avis Waddell

A funeral mass for Avis Elizabeth Waddell, 76, formerly of Campbell County, was at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke, Colo., with the Rev. Dan Zimmerschied officiating.

Burial was in the Alliance Cemetery in Alliance, Neb.

Mrs. Waddell, of Holyoke, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in Thornton, Colo.

She was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Spotted Horse to George Werner and Sadie Mae (Norbeck) Werner.

She was raised on a homestead ranch and was the seventh of 11 children. She graduated from Sheridan High School.

In 1947, she married Dean W. Powell. They raised four children; Teri, Gary, Dan, and Elizabeth on a dairy farm outside of Alliance.

She married William Waddell in Sheridan in 1972. She lived there until moving to Holyoke to be closer to her family.

While in Holyoke, she worked at the Golden Plains Motel and at the Holyoke Elementary School. She loved the children and enjoyed watching them as they progressed from kindergarten to graduation.

Mrs. Waddell enjoyed reading, making chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren and watching her soap opera, "Days of our Lives." She was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Holyoke and a member of the Jolly Dozen Extension Club.

Mrs. Waddell is survived by her four children, Teri Ferguson of Denver, Colo., Gary Powell of Haxtun, Colo., Dan Powell of Sheridan, and Elizabeth Powell of Las Vegas; a brother, Rupert Werner of Recluse; sisters, Mary Fowler of Rapid City, S.D., Marguerite Honley of Denver, Patricia Hanford of Worland, and Christina Mitchell of Gillette; and stepchildren; step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Tom and George; sisters, Lorraine, Cecilia and Frances; her two husbands; and one granddaughter.

Roberts-Baucke Funeral Service in Colorado was in charge of arrangements.

Glen G. Darlington - 02/10/04

A celebration of life for Glen G. Darlington, 72, of Upton will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Upton Community Center with the Rev. Gene Hagerman officiating.

Mr. Darlington died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at Crook County Memorial Hospital in Sundance.

He was born March 6, 1931, to Oley and Gail (Cummings) Darlington in Upton. He was raised on the family ranch near Rock Creek. He attended Darlington Country School until eighth grade and Newcastle High School, graduating in 1949.

He worked on the ranch and oil fields until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Weston County to continue ranching and working in the oil fields.

Mr. Darlington married Kristine Thorson on Aug. 18, 1965, at the Darlington Ranch in Weston County. He loved to rodeo and traveled with his friends to various rodeos around the country. After performing at Cheyenne Frontier Days for 20 years, he retired from rodeo in 1981.

In 1979, they moved to Fort Sumner, N.M., where he raised and trained race horses. They moved back to Wyoming in 1987, and he became the brand inspector for the state in 1989. He continued working until his death.

He loved rodeos and horse racing. He also enjoyed golfing, playing banjo and guitar, and an occasional drink of tequila. One of his great pastimes was cheering for the Upton Bobcats.

Mr. Darlington is survived by his wife of Upton; two sons, Clint Pickrel of Moorcroft and Troy Darlington of Rapid City, S.D.; two daughters, Nelda Mills of Beulah and Toni Sundgren of Bison, S.D.; two brothers, Wayne Darlington of Newcastle and George Darlington; two sisters, Mae Christiansen of Newcastle and Betty Gail Neal of Shell; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Cindy; Clint Pickrel's twin sister; and his parents.

A memorial has been established for the Shriner's Crippled Children Fund. Fidler-Roberts and Isburg Funeral Chapel of Sundance is in charge of the arrangements.

Jack Ray Huber - 02/15/04

Funeral services for Jack Ray Huber, 67, of Newcastle, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Newcastle with Charles Dutcher and Bill Hailey officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Worden's Funeral Home.

Mr. Huber died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at a ranch near Newcastle.

He was born Sept. 5, 1936, in Newcastle to Bayard and Ada (Cullum) Huber. When he was 3, his family moved to Spotted Horse where they ran the store and gas station.

In 1945, his family moved back to Newcastle where he met and eventually married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Fawcett, on Aug. 1, 1953. The couple moved to their first home at the Gas Plant near the Cheyenne River. In 1959, they moved back to Newcastle where he built their family home.

Over the years, Mr. Huber worked for Sutton Trucking, Johnson Fuel Liners and the Refinery. He also owned and operate a Sears store with his wife from 1972 to 1980. And he started Cedar Ridge Fish Hatchery on Beaver Creek and ran it for 18 years before retiring.

He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and four-wheeling, and he recently renewed his interest in coin collecting. He was a loving husband and father and a doting grandfather and great-grandfather who left many with wonderful memories of Grandpa's brand of fun-loving mischief.

Mr. Huber loved to play games and cards with family and friends, loved a good joke and loved to visit, and he was never too busy to stop and chat with anyone who stopped by the hatchery. His big heart and generous spirit were known by many.

Survivors include his wife of Newcastle; two daughters, Jeanette Huber of Clarkston, Wash., and Patty Bartlett of Saratoga; a son, Richard Huber of Newcastle; two sisters, Helen Kaiser and Betty Cowles, both of Newcastle; and cousins; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Estell "Bud" Huber and Bayard "Junior" Huber.

A memorial has been established in Mr. Huber's name, and donations may be sent to P.O. Box 301, Newcastle, WY 82701.
