Arthur N. Avery
1920-2005
Retired Navy Cmdr. Arthur Norton Avery, 85, died July 12 of natural causes at United Medical Center - West.
He was born June 12, 1920, in Chicago, Ill., to Arthur N. and Theresa (O'Hanlon) Avery. He went to school in Bedford Park, Ill. His parents both died in 1941. Arthur married
Dorothy Domenico in March 1945 in Denver. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in World War II and the Korean War as a Navy pilot (dive bomber), receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Navy.
Art Avery was a Federal Aviation Administration flight controller in Thermal, Calif., Rawlins, Laramie and Cheyenne, retiring in 1977. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, building grandfather clocks and furniture for his family and friends, riding his mountain bike around Cheyenne and visiting with his friends at the American Legion. He loved sharing his stories about his wartime experiences. Proud of his Irish heritage, Arthur visited Ireland in the 1980s. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club.
Art is survived by his three daughters, Susan Avery of Tacoma, Wash., Lisa (and Ed) Burns of Laramie, and Michelle (and Rick)Schum of Cheyenne; two sons, Jack of Tacoma, Wash., and Patrick (and Debra) of Gillette; and six grandchildren, Sarah and Sam Burns, Katie and Patrick Schum, Jessica and Eric Avery.
Funeral Liturgy will be 1 p.m. today at St. Mary's Cathedral with Father Phillip Wagner as celebrant. Interment will be in Beth El cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Ed Burns, Rick Schum, Patrick Schum, Sam Burns, Eric Avery, Al Chandler and Ralph Shauger.
Friends may contribute to the American Legion Post 6.
Bernice B. Alden
1914-2005
Bernice B. Alden, 90, of Cheyenne passed away on July 12.
She was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Guide Rock, Neb.
She married
John L. Alden in 1933 in Ericson, Neb.
Bernice was a longtime resident of Cheyenne and a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She had a deep belief in God and participated in many church faith programs for many years. She was a member of the Eagles and a volunteer cookie baker for the Veterans Hospital.
She is the beloved mother of Marlene A. and Pasquale Zumo and John L. and Kathy Alden, all of Cheyenne. She was grandmother to five wonderful grandchildren, Michael and Lori Zumo, Teresa and Ranjit Nath, Kym and Brad Freeman, all of Cheyenne, Christine and Bob Candler of Laramie and Traci and Jim Bush, all of Spangdahlem, Germany Air Force Base. Bernice was great-grandmother to eight beautiful great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, Andrew, Jennifer and Divya Nath and Sara Zumo, all of Cheyenne, Ryan and Jason Candler of Laramie, Victoria, Mickale and Patrick Bush, all of Spangdahlem. She is survived by two sisters, Goldie Taylor of Minneapolis, Kan., and Pauline Theriot of Lake Charles, La.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Alden in 1978; her eldest son, Billy Alden in 1951; her parents, Louie and Nellie Weigel; and three brothers, Charles Weigel, Glen Weigel and Edward Weigel.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Delbert Hansen officiating.
Family will receive friends at Faith United Methodist Church immediately following the services.
Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ranjit Nath, Bob Candler, Andrew Nath, Brad Freeman, Ron Miley and Mike Zumo.

Diane G. Woolington
1947-2005
Diane G. (Neater) Woolington, 58, of Cheyenne died July 8 in Cheyenne.
She was born May 28, 1947, in Columbus, Neb., and had lived here since 1971. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1965 and graduated from college in Hastings, Neb., in 1971 with a degree in business.
Mrs. Woolington was a service representative for Qwest (formerly US West).
She was a member of 4-H, Prairie Pioneers, Humane Society and participated in Race For The Cure for 6 years.
Mrs. Woolington is survived by her husband, Gary Woolington, Sr. of Cheyenne whom she married
Jan. 13, 1973, in Cheyenne; two sons , Gary Woolington Jr. of Cheyenne and Eugene Woolington of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister , Donna and Richard Holmes of Columbus, Neb., and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Harriet (Hansen) Neater.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Robert Garrard officiating.
Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
Family will receive friends at the VFW #1881 on East Nationway.
Friends may contribute to United Medical Center Hospice in Cheyenne or Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
Iva V. Redding
1924-2005
Iva Verlene (Baker) Redding, 81, of Wheatland died July 11 at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.
She was born April 29, 1924, in Grand River, Iowa, the daughter of Ralph and Zelma (Foland) Baker.
The family moved to Wyoming when she was 5 years old. She attended country school and Wheatland High School, then moved to California to live with an aunt and uncle where she graduated from Los Angeles City High School.
She worked as a telephone operator in California before marrying Leonard Anthony "Link" Redding on Nov. 3, 1942, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The couple divorced in 1993 after 51 years of marriage.
She returned to Slater, near Wheatland, in 1943, while her husband was in the service. After his honorable discharge in 1945, the family moved to Oklahoma and in 1948, they returned to Slater. She worked on the family farm, at Platte County Memorial Hospital, as a caregiver for the elderly, cooked for different groups, and was a school bus driver for many years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, upholstering, cooking, and playing with her great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her five children, Beatrice Ann Justus and Theresa Stanley, both of Tucson, Ariz., Leonard Redding Jr. of Upton, and Mary Budd and John Redding, both of Wheatland; a sister, Randena Wagner of Wheatland; two brothers, Eston Baker of Gardnerville, Nev., and John Baker of Wheatland; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edgar "Buck" Baker; three grandchildren; and former husband, Leonard on April 21, 2001.
At her request, no services will be held. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Gorman Funeral Homes - Platte Chapel of Wheatland.

James Burnett
1917-2005
James Burnett, 88, of Cheyenne died July 12 at Mountain Towers Healthcare Center.
He was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Williston, Fla., and had lived here since 2002 with prior residence in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Mr. Burnett had retired as a custodian for Pinellas County School District.
He was a member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. James accepted Christ and became a member of St. Mark's Missionary Baptist Church in St. Petersburg where he ushered and sang in the Special Gospel Choir.
Mr. Burnett is survived by his former wife, Addie Williams of Cheyenne; two sons and a daughter-in-law, J.B. Thomas of Clearwater, Fla., and Rev. James and Shirley Burnett of Douglasville, Ga.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Louise and David Thomas of Rainbow Springs, Fla., Gertrude and Bennie McLaughlin of Cheyenne and Michele Stroman McGuire of Duarte, Calif.; a step-brother, Henry Brown; three sisters, Rosa Claytor of Hartford, Conn., Thelma McKnight of Gainesville, Fla., and Teaster Preston of Miami, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren and a host of devoted nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Burnett; his mother and stepfather, Gertrude and Mose Niles Brown; and five sisters, Gertrude, Ester, Katherine, Clara Reese and Nancy Robinson.
Celebration of his life will be 4:30-7:30 p.m. tonight at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with Rev. Ernest Fitzhugh officiating.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Unity Temple of Deliverance in Williston, Fla.
Interment will be in New Hope cemetery.
LaVonna S. Barber
1941-2005
LaVonna S. "Vonnie" Barber, 63, of Custer, S.D., formally of Wessington Springs, S.D., died July 3 at the Avera Weskota Memorial Medical Center in Wessington Springs.
LaVonna Sharon Grann was born Dec. 22, 1941, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Irving and Annie (Poppenga) Grann. Her family lived on the Johnson Place near Beresford for one year. They moved to the Simmons farm in Lennox, S.D., for three years, then to the Poppenga farm south of the Delaware Church for three years. Then the family moved to Hurley, S.D., for one year before they moved to Kimball, S.D., for three years. The family bought a farm southwest of Wessington Springs and that is where they settled until Vonnie graduated from high school.
On June 14, 1959, she married
Harold Barber of Wessington Springs. They were married
for 45 years. Harold died on Sept. 1, 2004. They lived in Wessington Springs and Vonnie worked for the county auditor's office until 1978 and at that time they moved to Custer, S.D. In Custer they operated a Laundromat for a short time and Vonnie began work at the Custer County Bank (First Western Bank) as a teller on July 1, 1978, and continued to work there until her retirement on March 28, 2002. At that time she was the loan secretary.
Vonnie was an active member of the Custer Community Church serving on several boards and comities. Vonnie enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother and great friend. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her four children, Tim and Brian Barber, both of Custer, Monte Barber and Paula Merritt of Custer, and Christy Barber and Clay Keifert of Rapid City; five grandchildren, Colton, Shayla, Briana, Cameron and Donovan; her mother, Annie Grann of Cheyenne; a brother, Bob Grann and his wife, Mimi, of Cheyenne; and a sister, Vyonne Bell and her husband, Larry, of Littleton, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her father, Irving, and her husband, Harold.
Services were held.
Shirley B. Kirkbride
1921-2005
Shirley B. Kirkbride, 84, died July 12 in Cheyenne.
She was born May 11, 1921, in Longmont, Colo., to Gladys Yerian Beeson and Jesse Beeson. She grew up in Sheridan and was the valedictorian of her high school class in 1938. She graduated with a degree in English from the University of Wyoming in 1942.
She married
Ken Kirkbride on June 21, 1942. Following World War II, Shirley and Ken moved to the Meriden area where they joined the family ranching operation. They ranched, raised their three sons, Jon, Alan and Dan and were active in the rural community from 1946-1972. They continued in the family business after they moved to Cheyenne from 1972-2005.
Shirley was a 65-year member of P.E.O. and Pi Beta Phi social sorority. She was past president of Chapter C P.E.O. and past president of the United Medical Center Auxiliary. She served on the Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1986-1990 and was proud of the effort during this time to unite Cheyenne Memorial Hospital and DePaul Hospital to become the current United Medical Center. Shirley was also active in Laramie County Cowbelles, serving as president in 1968, and never missed a Wyoming Stockgrowers convention with her husband except one year when she was caring for her daughter-in-law, Pam. She was also a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church since 1962, serving in many capacities, but she most treasured her prayer group and Bible studies.
Under her leadership, the church sponsored Mr. Nguyen Thanh and his three sons from Vietnam in 1975 until they were successfully established in the United States and in Cheyenne.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Ken; and three sons and their wives, Jon and Dianne Kirkbride of Cheyenne, Alan and Lindi Kirkbride of Meriden, and Dan and Lynn Kirkbride of Chugwater. She had 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Shirley Kirkbride will be 2 p.m. on Monday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Gilbert and Rev. Brian Oliver officiating.
Pallbearers will include her grandchildren, TJ, Jeff, Glen, Ryan, Kapri, Anduin and Abby Kirkbride, and Mick and Charlie Westerman, Hannah Kirkbride and Jeremy Westerman serve in spirit as they are out of the country. Honorary pallbearers include all her many friends.

Wayne D. Lackey
1946-2005
Wayne D. Lackey, 58, of Cheyenne died July 11 at United Medical Center-West.
He was born Dec. 18, 1946, in Cheyenne.
Mr. Lackey worked for the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle for about 40 years, most recently as a carrier. He was also a security guard for Cheyenne Frontier Days.
He loved sports and playing bingo.
Mr. Lackey is survived by a brother, Keith D. Lackey of Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Shirley Clark of Cheyenne and Sharon Stuck of Romulus, N.Y.; stepmother, Norma Lackey of Mattoon, Ill.; four stepsisters; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Rucker and his father, Ralph Lackey.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Garrard and the Rev. Mary Jo Koehler.
Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Tim Rumpf, Mike McCracken, Larry Catalano, Doug Merideth, Richard Noe and Bill Brucher.

Edward L. Ruzicka
1952-2005
Edward L. Ruzicka, 52, of Cheyenne died Aug. 21 in Cheyenne.
He was born Sept. 7, 1952, in Walla Walla, Wash., and had lived here since 1991.
Mr. Ruzicka was manager of Subaru and Suzuki Dealership at Halladay Motors. He was a wheat and sweet onion farmer in Walla Walla and owned Ruzicka Trucking in 1989 in Walla Walla and from 1991 to 2003 in Wyoming. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB for four years.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 6, Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodge in Walla Walla. He had a private pilot's license and enjoyed flying.
Mr. Ruzicka is survived by his wife, Mary Ruzicka of Cheyenne, whom he married
Feb. 7, 1976, in Cheyenne; his parents, Charles and Mary Ruzicka of Walla Walla; a son, David Ruzicka of Cheyenne; two brothers, Gerald Ruzicka and Marvin Ruzicka, both of Walla Walla; a sister, Irene Rapp of Spokane, Wash. and one grandchild.
Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Ross as the celebrant.
Interment will be in Olivet cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Willie Kolkman, Bob Mathison, Tony Padilla, Richard Padilla, Matthew Padilla and Derrick Gardner.
Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.
There will be memorial services at a later date in Walla Walla.
Eric C. Beaven
1966-2005
Eric Craig Beaven, 38, of Tampa, Fla., died Aug. 23 in Tampa.
He was born Dec. 8, 1966, in Okinawa, Japan.
Mr. Beaven was an automotive detailer.
He is survived by his parents, T R and Sonja Beaven of Cheyenne; brothers, Max Beaven of Topeka, Kan., Kenneth Thompson and Robert Porter, both of Florida; and two sisters, Dominique Rouse of Carthage, Mo., and Cheryl Thompson of Florida.
Private family services will be held.
Gilbert Rightmeier
1919-2005
Gilbert Rightmeier, 85, of Cheyenne died Aug. 24 at United Medical Center-West.
He was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Jewell, Kan.
Mr. Rightmeier was a farmer.
He was a member of First Congregational Church, Elks Club and Men's Auxiliary First Congregational Church.
Mr. Rightmeier is survived by two daughters, Linda Sue Shiers and Kristin Lane Span, both of Cheyenne; and three grandchildren, Brian James Kunkel of Denver, Leslie Marie and Shane Doig of Denver, and Nathan Robert Span of Cheyenne; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon Shiers and wife, and Allen Shiers and family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Merry Elizabeth Rightmeier; his parents; and two brothers, Gaylord Rightmeier and Glenn Rightmeier.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today at Ogallala First Congregational Church in Ogallala, Neb., with Pastor Lauran Heidenreich officiating.
Burial will be in Ogallala cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Calvin Schultz, Bill Finch, Cpl. Nathan Span, Shane Doig, Brandon Shiers and Guy Bechtel.
