Viola A. McNealey
1912-2004
Viola Ackerman McNealey, 92, born June 14, 1912, in Fenton, died June 30 in Rapid City, S.D.
Viola shared her life with her husband, George C. McNealey, who passed away in 1992.
Viola's parents moved to the Big Horn Basin from Oklahoma in 1909. Her father, Joseph Ackerman, was a carpenter and an oil rigger. Her mother, Ethel Thayer Ackerman, was a homemaker and an accomplished artist with sewing crafts.
The family moved to Laramie in 1924. Viola attended public school in Laramie, where she graduated in 1929, and then attended the University of Wyoming, where she earned a teaching certificate.
Her first job was near Tie Siding and her second was north of Laramie near Bosler in a one-room school with four students. She returned to the university off and on for several years until 1943. During that time, she met George McNealey, her husband of 57 years. They were married
in 1935.
The McNealeys bought a house in Orchard Valley in 1945. There, they raised their family. Viola was active in many community organizations: the University of Wyoming Extension Club, Orchard Valley Garden Club and, for her children, the PTA, Y Teens, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H Club and Ki-Anne Indian Dancers.
The McNealeys loved fishing and camping in Wyoming. They enjoyed these activities with many relatives and friends across the state.
Their love of the outdoors led Viola and George to build a cabin, Red Willows, near Cora on the upper Green River. Here, she taught her grandchildren about nature, wild flowers, animals and how to fish in a small stream near the house. Her passion for the history of the state led her to a position of assistance state archivist (1961-1979). In this capacity, she helped James A. Michener research material for his book "Centennial."
She also worked on "The Wyoming Blue Book, A History Of Wyoming."
After selling Red Willows in 1979, they moved back to Cheyenne. Several years after her husband's death, Viola moved to Rapid City to live with her daughter.
She is survived by a son, Jim McNealey, who teaches art in Eugene, Ore., and his wife, Sheila; a daughter, Georgie (Joell) Wallace, who is a retired florist in Rapid City; eight grandchildren, Dr. Billie McNealey of Windsor, Conn., Rory Wallace of Cokato, Minn., Shaun McNealey of Salem, Ore., Diamelen Partridge of Los Angeles, H. Malakai and Jaiden Partridge, Natalie and Allison McNealey, John and Jacob Wallace and Aspen McNealey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George McNealey; their first two children, Joseph Roy and Ethel Jane, both who died at birth; a brother, Edwin (Buzz); and three sisters, Alice, Daisy and Evelyn.
