Dayton C. Bainter
1916-2003
Wyoming rancher, cowboy and the state's oldest living telephone pioneer, Dayton Cloyd Bainter, passed away Oct. 5 at United Medical Center-East after an extended illness. He was 87 years old.
His funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wiederspahn Chapel of the Chimes with his dear friend, the Rev. Robert. E. Mischke, M.D., officiating.
Mr. Bainter never knew a stranger. He was widely known for his broad grin and his generous and friendly wave from his red pickup truck as he tended his cattle herd south of Cheyenne.
Mr. Bainter was born July 17, 1916, on his family's farm along the Soloman River in Sheridan County, Kan., to Ruth Ellen Harold Bainter and Wesley Vincent Bainter.
When he was 17, he hopped a Kansas freight train to visit his elder brother, Darell, who was stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
He was immediately smitten with the Cowboy State and dreamed of returning to it - which he finally accomplished in 1941 when he was 25.
Following graduation from Decatur High School in Dresden, Kan., in 1934, Mr. Bainter served as secretary of his senior class of six students.
He met his future wife, Lilyan Ann Gottfried in the fourth grade, 79 years ago. They married
on July 20, 1938, in Greeley, Colo., and were married
for 65 years.
In 1941, he went to work for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company in Wyoming. He was the last groundsman hired in the state.
He helped set and/or replace telephone poles and lines for much of the service across the state, including building communication into the Casper Air Force Base, Italian War Prison in Douglas and the Japanese War Prison northeast of Cody.
During this time, he and his wife moved 18 times in one year alone. And, in one day alone, he strung wire across 263 telephone poles. He later went on to become the head of personnel. He worked for the telephone company for 31 years before retiring.
From the early 1960s until this past spring, he was the secretary-treasurer for the Orchard Valley Water Company.
During that time, the water rates were raised only twice, making it the least-expensive public water utility system in the state.
In 1961 he started his own cattle herd south of Cheyenne from a herd he bought from the original Wyoming Hereford Ranch. He ran as many 80 cattle at one time.
He rode his beloved Arabian stallion, Na Bul Bul, in several Cheyenne Frontier Days parades during the mid-1960s.
At that time, it was said he was the only person to have ever ridden a stallion in the parade.
This past January, after 43 years as a cattleman, Mr. Bainter sold the last of his cattle herd.
He was a 33rd degree Mason.
He loved Mexico and the people of Mexico and often visited Mazatlan and Copala, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Mr. Bainter is survived by his wife; a daughter, Donelle and her husband Tom Manton of Oregon; a son, Don and his wife Ann; two grandchildren, Brandi and Brandon; and three great-grandchildren, Weston, Cassidy and Paige. He is also survived by two "adopted-in-the-heart" daughters, Gaudelia "Fella" Cruz Hernandez of Mazatlan, Mexico, and Laura Morrow of Saratoga.
From Oregon to Colorado to Ohio, Mr. Bainter is survived by nieces and nephews, each whom he loved dearly, as if they, too, were his own children.
He also is survived by his beloved sister, Eunice Marie Wenger, and brother Darell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Marsh and Gerald "Burmie"; and his best friend, Jerry Briggs.
To honor Mr. Bainter, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tres Islas Orphanage Fund, which feeds hungry children in orphanages in Old Mexico.
The address is 8621 South Forrest Drive, Highlands Ranch, CO 80126.
Mr. Bainter will be interned at Lakeview cemetery near his late son-in-law and dear friend, Red Fenwick.
