Margaret R. Coates

1919-2003

Casper resident Margaret Ruth Adell Coates, 83, died July 31 at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper following a lengthy illness.

She was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Milwaukee, Wis., to George and Clara (Traupmann) Klipstein. Her early years were spent growing up in Milwaukee, Prairie du Sac and Madison, Wis. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1941, earning degrees in art education and fine arts with a minor in botany. Margaret studied art under renowned rural painter John Steuart Curry. His influence was best seen in her farmland paintings, the most recognized of which is her oil, "Four Horse Team." Her artwork was featured in Big 10 traveling exhibitions and in gallery shows at the university.

In 1942 she and her family moved to Cheyenne where she worked at the Cheyenne Horticultural Field Station. There Margaret did field research projects and provided the botanical illustrations for the research work of Dr. Myron Babb, station superintendent. At this time Margaret realized a childhood dream of owning her very own horse, a pinto she named Pawnee. Her happiness seemed supreme when she was able to ride him in the Frontier Days parades.

On March 17, 1946, she married Fred Coates, who had just returned from serving in Europe with the Mountain Infantry. They settled on the Coates homestead and ranch at the foothills of Casper Mountain. Mrs. Coates remained at the ranch her entire married life.

Mrs. Coates was an accomplished artist and avid gardener. She authored and illustrated a gardening book, "Perennials for the Western Garden," on how to grow perennials in the harsh environment of Wyoming's arid climate. The book was published by Pruett Publishing Company of Boulder, Colo., and has become a collector's item.

Mrs. Coates experimented with all kinds of trees and shrubs, many of which she grew from seed. She used the trees to create a windbreak around the homestead that today is shown off as a model of excellence by the Wyoming Extension Service, which uses it to demonstrate the effectiveness of a properly designed windbreak.

With her sister, Kathryn of Cheyenne, Margaret created the family's genealogy records. They spent numerous hours preserving the old family photos by painstakingly recreating new negatives and reproducing the old photos to share with the family.

Her artwork was used by her sister, Kathryn, to illustrate the recently published book, "A Paradise Lost: Sauk Prairie Remembered." The book is dedicated to the nearly 300 Wisconsin farmers who lost their rich farms when the government condemned their land for the erection of a munitions plant. Margaret's oils and sketches of the original Sauk Prairie community are sought-after items today.

Margaret was an accomplished needlewoman creating masterpieces in needlepoint and cross-stitch.

She was a member of Wyoming Press Women and National Federation of Press Women, where she won two national book awards.

Mrs. Coates was a member and officer of Natrona County Cowbelles and was a faithful member of a coffee club comprised of local ranchwomen.

She is survived by her husband, Fred; one daughter, Kathleen Brooker of Casper; four sons, Douglas Coates of Cheyenne, and Lance, Ross and Bruce Coates of Casper; and 10 grandchildren; her sister, Kathryn, and brother-in-law, Dick Gress of Cheyenne; many nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Frederic Klipstein, and sister-in-law, Helen Klipstein, all of Cheyenne.

Cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be spread by her children inside the windbreaks, which she created at the ranch.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Paradise Valley Christian Church with the Rev. Al Allen presiding.

She retired from Kodak Colorado Division in 1989.

We have lost a loving mother, grandmother, wife and best friend.

In accordance with her wishes, no funeral or memorial services will be conducted. Cremation was her choice and her remains will be interred in Cheyenne.
