Thomas Swackhammer - 08/27/03
Funeral services for Thomas Allen Swackhammer, 44, of Newcastle will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Four Square Church in Newcastle.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 today in the chapel of Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home in Gillette.
He died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, of work-related injuries.
Mr. Swackhammer was born in Fort Collins, Colo., on June 28, 1959, to David and Willa Jo (Anderson) Swackhammer. He attended schools in Fort Collins, where he graduated from high school in 1978.
Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he studied mechanical training, an interest and skill his father instilled in him. He served from 1978 to 1981, working on tanks.
He married Julie Polley on Nov. 6, 1982, in Fort Collins. He then reenlisted, serving from 1986 to 1991 and was a supply sergeant during Desert Storm. He wanted his wife to be able to see the world by traveling and he wanted her to see Germany, where he served two tours.
Following his discharge from the Army, he moved back to Colorado and lived in Sterling for five years. In August 2000, he moved his family to Newcastle after visiting friends and falling in love with the community.
Mr. Swackhammer enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed softball and loved to watch the Denver Broncos play football. He also liked to tinker on cars.
He is survived by his wife of Newcastle; three daughters, Kristine Swackhammer and Kellie Swackhammer, both of Newcastle and Jennifer Swackhammer of Alexander, N.D.; a son, David Swackhammer of Newcastle; his brothers and sisters, Karla Bencomo, Pam Shipply, Donald Swackhammer, and Lisa Hernandez, all of Fort Collins and Susan Swackhammer of Miliken, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ann Renee Swackhammer; and a granddaughter.
A memorial in his name has been established to benefit his children. Donations may be sent to the Swackhammer Family Trust, First State Bank of Newcastle, 24 N. Summer Ave., Newcastle, WY 82701.

Jack Bennick - 08/27/03
Funeral services for Jack Bennick, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Gillette with the Rev. Mark Jervis officiating.
Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
Mr. Bennick died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Junior Lewis "Jack" Bennick was born at home on the corner of Sixth Street and Carey Avenue in Gillette on Sept. 14, 1921, to J.O. and Ethel Lewis Bennick. He attended school in Gillette and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific, surviving the sinking of the carrier USS Wasp on Sept. 15, 1942. He was discharged in October 1945.
After his discharge from the Navy, he went to Sheridan where his parents had moved. There he met Ruth Braun and they were married April 14, 1946.
They returned to Gillette and he went to work for Stockmens Bank, where he worked until he retired in December 1986. He enjoyed many years at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. He loved fishing the streams in the mountains. He also enjoyed building remote control airplanes and was a member of the Sagehoppers.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 42, a member of the Gillette Lions Club and served as president one year. He served on the Gillette City Council for 10 years, and also served on many banking committees during his employment.
Mr. Bennick is survived by his wife; five children, Gay Robertson, Margo Clements, Greg Bennick, and Toby Montgomery, all of Gillette and Leslie Dowell of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth Bennick; two sisters, LaFern McCalla and Opal Wilson.

Carma Sue Salveson - 08/28/03
Memorial services for former Gillette resident Carma Sue Salveson, 63, of Florida will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating.
Mrs. Salveson died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash., of natural causes.
She was born July 20, 1940, in Joy, Texas, to Audie and Jessie Mae (Lahorn) Holland. She graduated in 1958 from high school at Ray, N.D., and attended one year of business school in Minot, N.D.
On June 17, 1960, she married Gerald R. "Jerry" Salveson in the Lutheran Church in Ray.
They moved to Gillette, where her husband worked for Halliburton for several years. The Salveson's started B&S Testers in 1979. They bought the Pines Lodge above Buffalo in 1985 and ran both businesses until 1992, when they moved to Florida to be near family. They lived in Florida until Mrs. Salveson's death.
Mrs. Salveson is survived by two sons, Randy Salveson of Micco, Fla., and Scott Salveson of Melbourne, Fla.; one daughter, Jeri Lynn Hodges of Susanville, Calif.; five grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Phillips of Plains, Kan.; and one brother, Valder Holland of Davis, Okla.

James Williams - 08/29/03
Funeral services for James "Leon" Williams, 81, of Gillette will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Herschel Crosby officiating.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 today at the Stevenson-Wilson Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow the service at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
Mr. Williams died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at his home of natural causes.
He was born March 3, 1922, in Rozet to William J. and Irene (Garrett) Williams. He was raised and educated in Rozet and graduated from high school in 1942.
He entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Indianapolis and the John W. Thompson. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Gillette where he met and married Helen Schneider.
He began working with his father drilling water wells. In 1958 he opened Leon's Repair Shop, which he operated until 1972. He worked as a contract welder until 1977, when he began working for Farmer's Co-op. He was employed until his retirement in 1984.
He loved to travel. He wasn't afraid of hardship or hard work and he could always find something to joke and laugh about. He especially enjoyed his family and never met a stranger.
Mr. Williams is survived his wife of Gillette; sons, James A. Williams of Gillette and Larry J. Williams of Austin, Texas; his daughter Donna Findley of Whidbey Island, Wash.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth W. Williams and Robert E. Williams; and one sister, Sylvia Crosby.
