RAYMOND CARL FREDERICK GERHARDT
Raymond Carl Frederick Gerhardt, 76, died May 10, 2006, at his home in in Meeteetse.
He was born to Harry and Louise Gerhardt on July 3, 1929, in Oxford, Kan., and was baptized into the Lord’s name on Sept. 6, 1929, then confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church on June 27, 1943. Raymond, along with his brothers Joe and Lyle and sisters Thelma, Lois, Dorothy and Linda were raised in a loving family on his parent’s farm in Netawaka, Kan. A dedication to family life forced him to leave school after eighth grade to help his father maintain the farm and support the family.
For his hard work on the farm, his father bought him a horse in his late teen years. With horse in hand at age 18, Raymond, being an adventurous soul, accepted a $10 bet that sent him on a self-rewarding horseback journey from Netawaka to the “Daddy of ‘em all” Cheyenne Frontier Days. His passion for the cowboy lifestyle and the dream of seeing the beauty of Wyoming was his drive to make the 600-mile trip a success. During those 14 days, he met many lifelong friends that supported him along the way. After selling his horse and catching the train back home, he was drafted into the Marines. The courageous Marine was sent to the Korean War where he dedicated three years of his life defending our country.
After the war, Raymond spent no time at all looking for the woman of his dreams. It wasn’t long before he found the one and only he was looking for, Marianne Saxton, and soon after married her on July 24, 1955. The two kept themselves busy raising their eight children, Randy, Rick, Rod, Larry, Sherry, Kathy, Jeff, and Shane, and creating a lifetime of memories on their farm in Netawaka.
In 1979 he decided to make his dream, a life in Wyoming, a reality by packing up the family with all of their possessions and leaving Kansas behind.
Working up to the day before his death, he provided Marianne and the family with the dream he had always held close.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Marianne; children Randy Gerhardt, Rick Gerhardt, Rod Gerhardt, Larry Gerhardt, Sherry Streeter, Kathy Felton, Jeff Gerhardt and Shane Gerhardt; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
