Richard Proctor - 02/08/02

Funeral services for long-time Hulett man Richard Leo Proctor, 91, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hulett High School Old Gymnasium with the Rev. Larry Kellner of Follow Your Heart Ministries in Hulett officiating.

Burial will follow at Moore Hill Cemetery in Hulett.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance, and at the Hulett High School Old Gymnasium from noon to the time of the service Saturday.

Mr. Proctor died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish, S.D., after a short illness.

He was born Nov. 21, 1910, to Frank E. and Bessie (Congleton) Proctor, at the homestead of his grandparents, William and Elizabeth Proctor, on Barnard Creek, near Hulett.

He grew up ranching, living with his parents on their homestead in Wyoming and sometimes on one in Montana. They raised cattle and horses. He attended country schools and Hulett High School, but soon he was out working at whatever jobs were available.

On Aug. 14, 1929, he married Mildred "Mutt" Seig in Cascade, Mont. They had known each other most of their lives, went to school together in the Hulett-New Haven area, where Lena Seig, mother of Mutt, was their teacher.

After they got married, they went to Sheridan where they worked at the Eaton Dude Ranch. They later moved to Casper, where they had a son. They were homesick for Hulett country, so they returned and soon moved to the Louie Strand Ranch, which they later bought. They lived there for more than 70 years. Four other children were born to them.

His wife died on March 24, 2000, and Richard continued to live at the ranch. He checked his cows daily and drove around the ranch.

He and his wife always had a big interest in rodeo and became involved with the Hulett Roping Club and the Hulett Rodeo, of which he was a charter member and past president. He became well known as a barrier judge.

They were members of the NRCA and worked rodeos in the five-state area for 42 years, and were well known in rodeo circles. In 1965, the governor of South Dakota named them honorary South Dakota citizens during the rodeo in Isabel, S.D.

He served several years on the Hulett School Board and was an officer of the Hulett Co-op for many years. He also belonged to the New Haven Farm Bureau.

Mr. Proctor is survived by one daughter, Bobbie Lou "Tiny" Bush of Hulett; three sons, Richard "Dickey" Proctor of Sundance, Donald "Jimmy" Proctor and Larry Proctor, both of Hulett; one sister, Ruby Main of Casper; one son-in-law, Harley Rathbun of Lemmon, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
