Mr. Ray was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Harry and Berenice (Holbeck) Ray, and when he was two years old, they moved to Sheridan. His grandparents lived in Atlanta, Missouri, and some of his fondest memories were spending time with them and helping his grandpa in his blacksmith shop.

The day after he graduated from Sheridan High School, he got a job at Montana Wyoming Oil Company, where he was the manager for about seven years. During the war, he went to Seattle and worked for Boeing, where he worked in the template and tool liason shop. While he was there, he designed the nose cone for the B-29. After the war, he returned to Sheridan and worked for the Mid Continent Oil Company. He met Helen Gronski, and they were married on February 8, 1946. He worked for Tommy Sanderson at the Nash Garage in the parts room and kept his books. Jack and Helen had lots of fun going back to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to pick up cars for him. He was also the Office Manager at Hammer’s Chevrolet for about five years, and then began working as a Public Accountant for the next twenty-five years. It was a real family business, as Helen worked in the office, and so did his oldest daughter Janis. He finally retired in 1987, when he was seventy years old. He built the home that he and his wife lived in for 56 years and raised their family. He also built their summer cabin in Story that they enjoyed.

He had many interests. He was an avid Denver Bronco fan, had his own private pilot’s license, loved leather craft and woodworking, he built old wagons, and was a great ice skater and photographer. He liked to go fishing, play his harmonica, and tell old stories. After his retirement, he liked to go on vacations, but his greatest love was to just spend time with his family. One of his greatest pleasures was having his grandsons around. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, the Society of Public Accountants, AARP, and an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Helen of Sheridan, Wyoming; his two daughters Janis Shannon and her husband Gene of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Amy Rojo and her husband David of Sheridan, Wyoming; his four grandsons, Travis Diener of Los Angeles, California, and Chris Rojo, Jon Rojo, and Danny Rojo of Sheridan, Wyoming; and his step-sister Margie Dregoiw and her husband Johnny of Sheridan, Wyoming.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Holy Name Catholic Church with The Very Reverend Eugene Sullivan and Deacon Joe Kristufek co-officiating. Interment of Mr. Ray’s cremains will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
