On Saturday, May 11, 2002, Rose Fowler passed away at Sheridan Manor. She was 95 at the time of her death. A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2002, at First Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Doolin officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Fowler was born January 1, 1907, in Scanno, Italy, to Nick and Anna (DeCrescentis) Julio. Her mother passed away in 1908. Her father had already established a home in the coal mining camp of Monarch and found work in the mines when he sent for his new wife (Lucia Paolone) and daughters, Ida, who was born in 1904, and Rose. Rose has been a resident of Sheridan County since being brought here as a young child in 1910.
Rose attended elementary schools in Monarch and Carneyville and one year at Holy Name School in Sheridan. She graduated from Sheridan High School in 1926. She taught elementary grades for 32 years. Her teaching began in 1926, when she taught that year at the Todd School on Piney Creek. Following that, she taught five years in Parkman, nine years at the Ucross School, and the next 17 years in Clearmont where she taught the first and second grades.
She married John H. Fowler on March 2, 1929, in Billings, Montana. In 1933, John made a down payment of $6.00 on a 160 acre ranch in Ucross. It was an enormous undertaking at the time, but proved to be a good investment, thanks to his farming and ranching skills. Ucross was their home until the death of her husband on August 27, 1970. On Year later, Rose purchased a home in Sheridan where she lived until moving into Sugarland Ridge in 1996. The last year was spent at Sheridan Manor.
Also preceding her in death were Lucia Julio in 1940 and her father in 1941; her sisters Ida Rotolo in March of 1980, and Mary Julio in October of 1980; her nieces, Dorothy (Fowler) Johnson and Glenda (Fowler) Dexter; her nephews, David Fowler and Tom Latham; and her three brothers-in-law, Fabio Rotolo, Leland Latham, and Kenneth Thompson.
She will be lovingly missed by her brother and sister-in-law Tony and Sally Julio of Denver, Colorado; and by her sisters, Delma Latham of Salem, Oregon, Lucile Thompson of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, and Jean O’Connor of Reno, Nevada. Family and friends meant everything to her. She was a devoted daughter, loving wife, a cherished sister, dearest aunt to numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, and was affectionately known as “Aunt Rose” to a legion of friends and former students. She leaves a legacy of extreme politeness and of being a hard working wife and teacher.
Next to her career as a rural elementary teacher, probably her favorite passion was raising “prize-winning” roses, although it was unlikely that they were ever entered into competition. Instead, her great joy was sharing her beautiful roses with anyone who happened by.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Piney Women’s Club, Retired Teachers, and a loyal member of the Democrat party.
Memorials may be made to Easter Seals, Camp Bethel or to a charity of the donor’s choice, in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.
